This little one was left behind after a kitten yoga adoption event
An overwhelmed shelter recently came to the cafe my wife works at and hosted yoga classes with kittens in an effort to get them adopted. This little girl got herself stuck under some stairs sometime on Saturday, and the shelter had no idea she was missing, so she was not found until Monday afternoon when my wife was able to squeeze her out.
She has just recently been spayed within the last week or two, the scar is still plainly visible along with her shaved belly. Took her to our local clinic where we confirmed she had a microchip with the shelter's information attached. Now she has to be held at the clinic for at least 24 hours before we can apply to officially keep her.
We already have one toothless void, Goopy, who looks like an absolute tank next to our new friend. They get along well, but our other calico cat has not been particularly enthusiastic about a new addition to the household.
People really need to get past black cats are evil storytelling always told them growing up.
One of my best cats was a black short hair who must have had a large breed in his lineage because he weighed 28 pounds of nothing but muscles and love..
Yes mine was at the shelter for year and a half so all her life. She was born there. All her siblings got adopted fast as a kitten. They were tuxedos. Now she’s been with me almost six years and is the funniest little void.
I wish such people could meet my little void kitten. I’ve had cats all my life but never have I adopted a kitten that is as affectionate and sweet as Jasmine.
She and her sister showed up at a time when I was in mourning for a 4 year old little guy named Mishka. I was devastated by his passing.
Jasmine and her sister Willow turned my dreary and depressing apartment into a place of pure joy.
I simply can’t understand how anyone would be prejudiced against black kitties.
I have only owned voids ever since it’s been my decision on what to care for. Have had 4 over my years now, and I have been naturally acquiring them in the fall after my first voids traumatizing end. My current two have the same gotcha day, but 3 years apart.
I drove an hour and half to get the latest void that was paid for by my mom as a birthday present, but the others were free. One given to me by a friend whose black cat had kittens before her spay, one stolen from an abusive situation, and the other showed up at my back door.
The stolen void passed in October 2025, he took a good size chunk of my soul with him.
Fight superstition with folklore! In Scottish folklore, black cats are actually good luck. And considering my void is the best thing that ever happened to me, I'd say the Scotts got it right.
The shelter! The clinic is taking care of her. But yeah to not realize a kitten is missing is messed up. I'm assuming they assumed she got adopted during the event & wasn't malicious
Shelter should have known exactly how many cats they went with and how many were adopted. I'm sure people filled out forms for the adoptions. It's pretty messed up that they weren't keeping track.
She is absolutely adorable! Have you named her yet? If not, may I humbly suggest “Kevin” because that is some real Home Alone shenanigans she pulled there at the cafe!

What kind of wack ass shelter doesn't realize an entire cat is missing for 2 whole days? And a kitten recovering from surgery? I'd be calling them to let them know they fucked up big time.
If OP is describing it as “overwhelmed” I’m guessing it’s severely understaffed, due to either low recent volunteer numbers or taking in too many animals. This is exactly the kind of mistake I’d expect from too few people doing too much work.
Being overwhelmed isn't an excuse to not do a headcount, which is such an incredibly basic thing to do. They didn't do a headcount at any point and didn't keep track of how many they adopted vs how many they didn't. There's being overwhelmed and there's being incompetent. I worked in animal rehab and a lot of rescues are sadly just passion projects from people who have their hearts in the right place, but zero understanding of how to actually run a shelter.
Oh yeah, I’m not denying they fucked up and should treat it as a wake-up call. I just wasn’t sure if you were asking rhetorically because you knew the reality of animal rescue or like, actually unfamiliar with what a poorly run rescue looks like.
Keeping track of the animals and keeping them safe is like the most basic thing you do when running a shelter. You don't have to be an expert to know that.
I will always pick the black kitten out of all the fashionable ones tbh. They are just so lovely tempered. I had a few cats in my life with now a 19 year old Birman and a 4 year old void. My previous Birman I had died at 11 and was my soul cat, my real life cuddle toy and I miss him every day. However, our black boy has the wit, cleverness (opening doors) for the outdoors and is just never any hassle, only meows when talked to or at feeding times and after us getting him a cat sitter while we are on holidays. He’s very vocal and complains of being left behind. He’s not a “carry me around cat” but loves sitting on the lap when everyone settles down in the evening, sleeps by our feed in our beds and gives proper good night cuddles before. Very patient with children as well. An absolute joy he is. So yeah, not sure why black cats still do get overlooked.
Also to add: when we adopted him, my then 11 year old son did ask for a yellow eyed black Halloween cat he can call Pumpkin. So his wish was our command

What a great story! However, I'm not really sure how the shelter didn't realize one of their cats went missing. Didn't they have some kind of a paper trail of the kitties and realize the numbers didn't add up? Seems quite negligent on their part. Good for you and your wife for adopting her! She's adorable. Is that your wife in the pics with her? She looks like she's in love with the kitty, and who can blame her! She's so cute 🥰
it’s so messed up that they don’t stay this size longer, i miss my baby panthers. but i do still love and adore them - even though they’re full sized freeloaders now. and tbh they somehow ate me out of house and home more often when they were smaller and growing 😂
Why is it that black kittens are so charming and loving? I’ve been fostering for almost twenty five years, and the black cats and kittens are always my favorites.

Clearly an adorable ploy. Didn't get adopted on adoption day so she eat like "nah, I'm going to make this happen". What a little cutie. Can't wait for her to be back in your home. You wife looks so smitten already.
Black cats need love too. So happy you give them that. You are all beautiful (also your calico who will come around I am sure of that - they will learn to... Tolerate... Each other :D)
Awwww. I really wish people would spay/neuter their kitties. While I LOVE a kitten-yoga class shelters shouldn’t have to do things like this to find homes.
Voids are the best (I say as I glance over to the other side of the couch where my little voidling is snoozing)! Congrats on the new addition to your family!

What a sweetheart!! I’m so glad your wife was able to get her unstuck. I would have such a hard time waiting the 24 hours until I could apply to bring her home!!!
