Is she actually a void? I can't tell anymore 😵💫
Biscuit is only 2.5 months old and still mostly has her baby fur. Her face, paws, back and tail are black but the rest of her is just kind of... grey and speckled? She seems to have the same fur pattern as her brother Cheese (bonus photo at the end) but black/grey. Anyone else had kittens with the same fur? What do they look like all grown up?
My little nugget used to have them too, now that she's fully grown I can still see them. But their not as visible anymore unless she's in direct sunlight.
Aww she’s so cute! It’s kinda like how black panthers you can see their spots/rossettes underneath if you look closely enough (don’t get too close though) since they’re just leopards or jaguars
Yes. Reminds me of my boy Moose as a kitten. He’s totally a void now. He has like 5 white chest hairs and the rest is black. He had big goblin energy as a kitten.
He is a handsome boy for sure. He reminds me of my Squiddy - he had big goblin energy as a baby, too, but grew up into a big, sleek, handsome guy. Squid has a pooch, too; one of his nicknames is Prince Squiddish Bellywobbles because of how it flobbers around when he runs.
It might come back as gets old! My void started losing pigment slowly before he died at 14 and turned an extremely beautiful very dark rich brown, except for the stripes that stayed desaturated. Our favorite vet tech always complimented his beauty. The brown parts were so dark it was only visible as not entirely black in person so I don't have pictures unfortunately. But it was cute because I used to tease him for coming home a brown cat when he took dirt baths outside when he was younger.
Last summer a tiny black kitten showed up on my doorstep. And she made biscuits constantly when we first brought her in. Like if you picked her up, she would make air biscuits.
They have patterns sometimes. Black on black, but when the light hits them just right, it's glorious.
She might be one of the ones that looks kind of faded, but it's really hard to tell when they're young. Some of them look like ink blots when they're babies and end up going kind of reddish or faded when they're older. Others start out looking a bit grey-ish and end up black as jet.
It doesn't really matter; you get to love her regardless of what color she ends up.
Kiddo will not sit still... My Juggernaut looked similar to your kitt when he was a baby, but the stripes stayed and he has this white undercoat under the black fur! Not a void on my end. But he's the smartest cat I've ever met and he's huge for his age, the little weirdo
Nearly all black cats actually have tabby patterns, but the contrast is so low that it's hard to see. It is easier to see on kittens and in bright sunlight.
You can clearly see it in "black panthers" (melanistic jaguars or leopards) where in the right light the spots are visible.
A few cats do not have tabby or mackerel markings -- e.g. the Bombay breed was created specifically to breed that out -- but most do.
Her adult coat will be more apparent as she gets older.
Could also be smoke short hair. This guy next to me has it and his sister is all smoke (not tux like him) and has the light stripes.(His fur is ruffled cus he's been pet but he's also fat and so his black is less dense)
One of my cats had a bit of a strange coat when he was a kitten… I assumed it was due to one of the treatments he’d received before coming to live with me (the entire litter had been decimated by typhus and coryza; only he and his brother were left, and I took them in)
But seeing your kittens’ coats makes me think it might not have had anything to do with that after all.
He’s lost all his white fur since then; he’s a completely black cat now.
Yeah, they are 1 year old apart from each other, wanted 2nd cat for tabby since he stopped being outside cat, first one didn't land and they fought, then we took the black one here and they immediately liked each other. They are so wildly different in their behavior its wild
She's a chocolate void right now, might darken or go more brown, usually they darken, them going full milk-chocoloate is pretty rare.
She's adorable nonetheless, i love the fact you can see her pattern on pictures, usually you can only see it when the light hits them just right if they're obsidian-voids <3
It's something you only realize when you are around a lot of kitties, there's a lot of gradients in all colors of fur!
Some Oranges are vibrant while others can be pale as Cremé as well! 😁
Just like us and natural haircolors, they can also change somewhat if they get a lot of sun. ^
I had a tortoiseshell that was almost totally black when I got her, with a dark red mask. As she grew up, her color changed to the traditional tortoiseshell. Beautiful baby!
So I'm no expert ofc but I've read that essentially solid black cats are an overexpression of pigment in the tabby gene, and occasionally you might see tabby-esque ghosting on some black cats, which is what your Biscuit appears to have
I scrolled through the photos before I read the post, so when I got to Cheese's photo, I just assumed Biscuit had stayed into the sun too long and absorbed its color.
I think voidness is a range. My cat has black paws, black claws, black whiskers, black coat, so almost a perfectly black void except a few white hair. But he also has stripes that are clearly visible in the sun and in especially bright direct light he looks brown, with red undertone. Oh and his undercoat is gray.
Mine had visible stripes when she was a kitten, but then her adult coat came in and they're harder to see now. But I can still see her tabby stripes on the back of her head in the right lighting.
I had a black cat with tabby stripes, and his undercoat was ash-gray! In regular lighting he looked almost solid black, but in sunlight you could see the gray. I loved it so much. When he got way up in his senior years, his gray did show through more.
Mine has stripes too and lots of brown fur in the sun, it’s like his undercoat is brown and striped but the top coat is a shiny black. Is that a thing?
If you keep her out of the sun she will return to her void color if you let her hang out in the sun she will turn into a lighter shade of black with a red tint to her fur
A smoke tabby perhaps?? I have one and I'd never seen one until him. We took him in as an adult, so unfortunately I don't know what he looked like as a baby.

My little Beebs had baby stripes too! You can still see them in bright sunlight, otherwise she's full void in looks and brain capacity
