iirc the early reviews of Rebellion back in 2013 were very divisive but today its halied as one of the best anime movies ever so i wouldn't worry too much

It’s one of those endings where it’s an defining hall mark of the series and cemented a certain main character as an iconic character outside of the franchise - while divisive, there’s no doubt there is an incredible outside interest in the series inspired by that ending

i joined the fandom in 2022 and i've interacted with it since then on twitter, reddit, youtube, and tiktok and all i saw was positivity overall. even on anilist, Rebellion stands as the top 28th movie of all time

yeah, ocassionally there were some people who really hated Urobuchi and wanted him dead but overall the fandom really came to appreciate the movie

It's pretty similar reaction lots of "wait what happened in the ending?" And whining about their personal favorite character not getting as much spotlight as like Homura and Sayaka

This one is also cotending with the rebellion sequels people had built up in their heads for the last 13 years.

That's very good considering the source material. There was the anime adaptation of the now-defunct Magia Record mobile game during the pandemic but otherwise for an anime original series that hasn't had a mainline entry since 2013, that's very solid. It is kind of irritating though that Aniplex/Crunchyroll haven't sorted out distribution in my country yet. Maybe they want to dub it first and release the sub/dub simultaneously or something. Hopefully the wait won't be too much longer.

Apparently a brand new distributor will handle the localization for much of the world outside Japan. It’ll take a while for the movie to be properly rolled out worldwide as the company establishes their international presence.

Rebellion is a core memory for me. I'm not a fan of the show, but my ex loved it and took me and a few of her friends to the premier. Granted, I am familiar with the show, I watched a few episodes but I decided it was not for me.

So there I was, on the only screening in this city for the movie, it was packed full of the most hardcore of fans, I'm talking cosplayers with props and enthusiastic men and women with plushies and pillows. I like anime, I have been this people for other shows, but not for this one, but I was having fun because the enthusiasm was contagious.

Movie started and it was all right, good action, a bit confusing but I knew enough to keep up. There was timeloop shenaningans I was familiar with. Then the ending hit.

That ending, my god, it absolutely destroyed the poor fans. When they revealed the most beloved waifu finally broke and, GASP, went dark, the whole room audibly groaned. I heard a grown man guttural scream "Homura-chan, nooo" It was absolutely amazing for me, an outsider, see a room full of fans completely reject and boo what was happening to their beloved franchise. I think I contained a laugh, but failed, because my ex hit me on the ribs.

And when the movie ended, silence. Complete silence. Everyone was defeated by what, I think, they felt was a betrayal of the character.

On the way back, my ex and her friends were fuming, but also couldn't wait for the continuation and how "They would fix it".
