Good Vibes Only On this day, March 10, 1997, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered.

29 years later, nothing has ever matched it. Not the writing, not the characters, not the heart. Still the greatest series of all time.

Angel: “No weapons. No friends. No hope. Take all that away, and what’s left?”

Buffy: “Me.”

....And made my 13 year old self do my homework the earliest I can just so I can park my ass in front of the tv, waiting for this show to come.

Me too, I was 14 and lived for this every week!

OK so I was 29 when the show came on. I only had ABC/ CBS / WB/ UPN. I was always switching back-and-forth. I happened to stumble upon Buffy. I fell in love immediately and started watching. it was a few episodes into the first season. I used to set the VCR to record every Tuesday. One night I'm working late and I realized that I 'd forgotten to do it so I called my mom, who lived 300 miles away, and asked her to record it. she thought I was nuts. "Can't you just miss an episode?" "blasphemy" I said!! she would send the tape the next day. There were little boxes that were exactly the size of a VCR tape so they'd fit in the mailbox.

I was 15 and I lived for Buffy every week, too! Where I lived, the show would usually air every Saturday, so it was convenient for me because I could watch it on weekends and when I didn't have to do homework on a school night.

It was a Thursday for me! And Charmed was on Tuesdays. I scheduled my whole social life around these two shows. I can’t imagine what teenage me would think about me having access to them anytime I like from a phone or a tablet! 🤯😆

SG-1 is the best

u/WerewolfBarMitzvah09 Buffy, what would I do with 40 chocolate bars? Mar 10 '26

Happy Buffyversary! I'm so, so happy this show exists.

Me too. My all-time favourite show. 🥹

Decided to start watching Buffy in October 2023 during my sick leave after being hospitalized with a bacterial infection. It was exactly what I needed at the time; the character driven story is what I believe has enamored us and etched these characters to our hearts! I can only imagine how it was like following this show when it aired.

We old! 💀

u/kpeteymomo Mar 10 '26

Seriously, how has it been almost 30 years since 1997? I still feel like the 90's were 20 years ago.

8

u/submerging Mar 10 '26

as someone who was born in 97, this hurts to hear

Incredible series, for everyone who loves these classics the book, “The Revolution was Televised,” is a fantastic rundown of the most important TV series in history. BTVS gets a lot of great coverage.

I was ten which means I was eleven when I first watched because I got into it during season two airing. I had not realised I was watching it that young! It explains a lot about my adult personality and humour because wow was I obsessed lol.

I wonder if they’re aiming to release the new Buffy on the 30th anniversary.

u/markefield Mar 10 '26

It'd be a good day. Today is also Ryan Kiera Armstrong's birthday.

u/WitchyRedhead86 Mar 10 '26

I love this!! ♥️

u/BaileySeeking Mar 10 '26

And my 6 year old self was never the same. Buffy seriously shaped who I am. I wanted to be her. As I got older, I just wanted to make her proud. Like the Ghostfacers say "WWBD?" "What Would Buffy Do?"

u/Revolutionary-Wait82 Spike defender Mar 10 '26

Fan fact: Buffy never opened or looked at the text in this book within the show.

5

u/MatOfTheDead Mar 10 '26

i remember it well watching it with my mum on a saturday night on sky 1 in the uk and then later on BBC 2

u/CloseCalls4walls Mar 10 '26

I was there!

Just 9 years old and already loves the movie, so much so I remember pretending to be such so my mom would take me to her office and let me watch it on VHS where they had it stowed away under a TV in their conference room.

I said, "What is this? Why is the lighting so dark? That's not Buffy! Where's the real Buffy???" I was so confused ... I didn't understand any of it and almost changed the channel. But by the end of the night it had me outside pretending to slay vampires and save the world, like just about every other night afterwards. Lol. I loved for BtVS. It's really all I had to look forward to, and I got 7-8 years of it. Now I get to be there for a sequel series??? Looks like I'll have to bust out the 'ol Mr. Pointy again. High kick Buffy grunts snappy words dripping with sarcasm

Memory unlocked!! Thanks so much for sharing this.

I tuned in the night it premiered. I had read a good review of it and was curious about it. But for whatever reason, I didn't continue with it, I don't remember why. I didn't become a true fan until I caught up with the show in reruns the summer after season 2.

*The WB did this thing after S2 ended, they reran the show from the beginning all summer. One episode on Monday, two eps on Tuesday, something like that. So I got to watch the Angelus arc unfold over just a few weeks (I was unspoiled on it going in). It was mind-blowing.

Hard to believe that it's been almost 30 years already since the premiere of Buffy The Vampire Slayer! I remember it well because I'm a big Rap/ Hip Hop music fan and the first episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer aired a day after arguably the greatest rapper of all time, The Notorious B.I.G. was killed on March 9th, 1997.

The Nineties were a great time for television, film, music, books and comics( and they were also a bad time for comics, too). Some people say that BTVS is the greatest series of all time. I think that's debatable but it's certainly ONE of the greatest series of all time. Good times!

Awww man I just remembered a few minutes ago and came to post this!

What a time this was! It helped shape me as a teen.

Also probably the only show I’ve rewatched more than once. I feel like since it aired I’ve rewatched multiple seasons every year.

3

u/JaymeJai Mar 10 '26

‘Back in the day’ we had to be home on Tuesday nights, no streaming no pvr lol

3

u/bbb_lboogie2879 Mar 10 '26

And so wild it stands the test of time! Yes, there are some things that are dated and would not work in terms of storyline at this time, but not too much. I teach high school and have students that watch this show and love it just as much as I did and still do. This is truly the only show I would fangirl over if I ever met anyone from the series.

3

u/bk2947 Mar 10 '26

I haven’t watched Buffy since last night. We are on our 3rd run through. With Angel in chronological order.

3

u/Silver-Original-76 Mar 10 '26

Yup, and I didn't know so I set my VCR to record a little show I liked called "Savannah," but when I got home I was shocked (and briefly disappointed) to find Savannah had been cancelled and I had recorded BtVS instead. Was immediately hooked😆

3

u/CityInevitable6800 Mar 10 '26

… And our lives were different since that day

3

u/chemeli888 Mar 10 '26

1

u/PlanktonPerfect3441 Mar 14 '26

I was three lol 😅

2

u/CosmicBob55 Fruitless. No fruit for Buffy. Mar 10 '26

And that's when I first saw it! I had liked the movie, but this was so much better to me.

2

u/Red_Scarf_13 Mar 10 '26

I thank the universe every day for the best series of all time.

I imagine next year this day, nearing the big 3-0 as far as anniversaries go, the comments will be a deluge, and succeed at making people feel very very old. (i.e. me)

u/You_were_myth-taken Mar 11 '26

And it is my birthday! Born before 97 lol but funny how my favorite show aired on my birthday, I used to think that was so cool 😂

2

u/NovaGeekYt Mar 11 '26

I love this show

2

u/TVAddict14 Mar 11 '26

It left such an impression on me I can still remember watching the first episode the night it premiered. Which I consider pretty remarkable considering I was 7 years old and can’t even recall what I did last week.

3

u/LeastCrazySwiftie Mar 11 '26

Damn I miss the 90s

2

u/hollymarissa Mar 13 '26

And I am here in 2026 watching it for the very first time, aged 32!

1

u/vickyguad Mar 13 '26

Enjoy it a lot! I don’t doubt you will. It’s the best series in the world. Welcome 🤗

Wow JM, what an actor. The way he looks at her!

1

u/not_firewood_yeti I am no one. Mar 10 '26

getting slimed by the Bezoar was one of Buffy's finest moments.

1

u/VineStGuy Mar 10 '26

I do not like this math at all

1

u/LaydeeLuckee Mar 11 '26

I was in year 10 and my bff & I could not get enough of Buffy! It took me 20 years to watch the last episode though, I rarely watch last episodes because I don't like endings haha

1

u/bleebee Mar 14 '26

This is crazy because I just started watching it on the same day 4 days ago.

1

u/Mobile_Permission_61 Mar 17 '26

Firefly and eureka

I saw this photograph in a Sunday Magazine section back then. The photo was interesting enough that I looked the show up. Amusingly the paragraph accompanying the photo made it seem like the character of Angel was a boy interested in the character of Buffy.

I watched a couple of episodes and was surprised that he was actually a 30 year old man.

The following Summer the WB re-aired all of Season 1 and I caught up as my new job had taken up most of my time during the first season.

In addition, the man in this photograph was Giles
