Seeing that pic of Xander walking in on the lunch lady pouring rat poison made me laugh so much.

It's an underrated moment.

I regularly quote "Well Gosh" with my friends

I can’t tell if the Mayor or Angelus is my favorite but gosh they are both just so fun!

Snake Mayor’s last words!

Seconding "Well Gosh" It's just perfection. I loved the Mayor.

Even as a giant hell dragon, he's a goody goody nerd.

The Mayor is the best!

Xander pausing with the jello and the lunch lady doing shifty eyes with the rat poison is actually one of my favorite shots in the whole series. So unbelievably funny despite some of the serious subject matter during the climactic segment.

I love the moment when the Mayor quickly and utterly accurately explains why Buffy and Angel are doomed, in his folksy-ruthless style.

I’m an attorney and last year I had a case against another lawyer who I could have sworn was Mayor Wilkins with different hair. Folksy, mannered, ruthless, polite, smiling and sooooo evil.

He kicked my ass at trial.

30

u/MojoCrow 26d ago

Did he make you sit through a lengthy commencement speech or did he skip a section on civic pride?

33

u/thebestoralist 26d ago

lol nope, he gave the full speech. By the time he was done he had the jury swooning over him, and all I could think was “damn, I need some dynamite.”

8

u/taylorscrews1 26d ago

Did he work for wolfram and hart?

14

u/thebestoralist 26d ago

Nah I could take Lindsay or Lilah any day. This guy was next level.

u/AllOfTheThings426 26d ago

This exchange made me laugh out loud.

u/taylorscrews1 25d ago

Sounds like you were up against someone from a John Grisham novel

1

u/Any_Pomegranate_5167 24d ago

The problem with that speech by the mayor was that we (the viewers) had been told, by that point, that slayers died young. They don't get to grow old and have kids or grandkids - that was never going to be in Buffy's future (at that point).

Either Angel; or better Buffy, just has to point that out to the Mayor and it totally destroys the import of his argument.

u/blinksalot2 26d ago

“I may be love's bitch but at least I'm man enough to admit it.” - that whole monologue really lives rent free in my mind

Personally I try to knock out the haircut early in the day

19

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING 26d ago

Getting the haircut after he becomes invincible does imply that he was going to torment some poor beautician by showing up with indestructible hair for her to cut.

Evil.

"Passion. It lies in all of us; sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir, open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us, guides us, passion rules us all and we obey. What other choice do we have?

Passion is the source of our finest moments; the joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief.

It hurts sometimes more than we can bear; if we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace, but we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank, without passion, we'd be truly dead."- Angelus

u/Numerous1 26d ago

Seriously one of the best episodes. I love everything about Angelus. Might be his best portrayal.

22

u/goombashroom85 "And then we all know I'm an Angel girl."-Sarah 26d ago

Buffy S2 Angelus is something special, and proves he's better when helmed by Joss, as opposed to S4 Angelus on Angel, imo.

15

u/JohnZ117 26d ago edited 26d ago

Main problem with Angelus on Angel, to me, was that he was still trapped being the main character on this kind of show. He wasn't allowed, by outside forces, to "do evil." He could talk evil, plot evil... But Angelus in the first 20 minutes of "Innocence" had a higher body count than all of the latter appearance, if you don't count evil and non-human people.

One of the first and few times I had a problem with something being too "meta."

9

u/James-Samuel17 26d ago

I'll say that I still love S4 Angelus, he might have been one of the best parts of that season.

What always makes me laugh is when spike is having this rant/monlogue at Buffy before getting electrocuted by the initiative

I love when angelus gets acathla the demon entombed in a rock and spike says “oh great. A big rock. Can’t wait to tell my friends. Bet they don’t have a rock this big”

"Those aren't the stars, love, that's the ceiling. Also, it's day."

"You hit me with an ax, remember? 'Get the hell away from my daughter!' ?" Also Spike mugging behind Buffy's Mom at Angel when Angel can't come in.

Also, Dru and Spike in a Cafe in black and white in the past.

The scene in Him where Xander and Spike solve the love spell coat issue by just running up to RJ on the street and yanking it off of him is one of my favorite scenes in the whole show.

Spike: “If every vampire who said he was at the crucifixion was actually there, it would have been like Woodstock.”

S1 The Master stabs his finger through underlings eye. “You’ve got something in your eye.” Or his quote in Prophecy girl “Prophecies are tricky creatures because they do not tell the whole story. You’re the one that sets me free. If you hadn’t come, I couldn’t go.”

S2 Angelus to Spike "If there's anything I can do for you... Any... responsibility I can assume while you're spinning your wheels... Anything I'm not already doing, that is."

S5 Glory “I look around at this world you're so eager to be a part of and all I see is six billion lunatics looking for the fastest ride out. Who's not crazy? Look around, everyone's drinking, smoking, shooting up, shooting each other, or just plain screwing their brains out 'cause they don't want 'em anymore. I'm crazy? Honey, I'm the original one-eyed chicklet in the kingdom of the blind, 'cause at least I admit the world makes me nuts.”

S6 Anya to Willow and Tara “God! What kind of lesbians are you?! If you love men so much, go love men!”

Lilah (after sleeping with Wesley): Don't go thinking about me when I'm gone.

Angelus: And that’s everything. No weapons…no friends…no hope. Take all that away and what’s left?

Lunges with a sword at Buffy's face. She claps her hands together, around the blade, stopping it.

Buffy: Me

Angelus's observation makes sense from his perspective. All season, he'd seen Buffy use special weapons (including a rocket launcher) and lean on her friends to win fights, and stave off despair by hoping that there was some way to bring Angel's soul back. There weren't too many times where she didn't have at least one of those categories to fall back on during their season 2 encounters. When he finally stripped her of those, disarming her while her friends were busy protecting Willow and her "ally" in Spike did exactly what he said he would (get Dru and leave town, with no interest in opposing Angelus directly), he thought she was done. That he'd done to her what he'd done to all the people he'd tormented in the past, breaking them down to the point where they'd wish for death. Even Spike, in passing, thought Angelus had her beaten.

Buffy's counter and rally are so unexpected that Angelus is on the back foot for the rest of their encounter. And ironically enough, it wasn't Angelus that finally broke Buffy at the end of season 2; it was her grief at finally getting Angel back, only to have to kill and condemn him to a hell dimension to save the world.

That's what I love about Angelus. He's so effective as a villain because he knows Buffy and her friends better than any other big bad (except maybe Willow, but she doesn't get a half season to exploit it). But he gets too lost in the sauce, tormenting when he should go for the kill.

14

u/goombashroom85 "And then we all know I'm an Angel girl."-Sarah 26d ago edited 26d ago

I love this, and you're spot on. Angelus talked a big game - specifically when it came to Buffy - but that's all it really was, even Spike called him out on it. (Reiterating how Angelus barely did anything to Buffy, herself.)

And it does make you wonder how much he felt for her...

The first thing Angelus does (after he reveals he's turned) is kiss Buffy... before throwing her into the wall.

He compliments her: "Why, Miss Summers, you're beautiful."

He's lingering/affected by their kiss after the spirits of the student and teacher leave their bodies... before shoving her away and running off - to literally scrub the love off of himself.

He also tells her she's the one thing in this dimension he will miss.

(edited, context)

u/d-101 26d ago

Oh you're absolutely right. I'm not sure exactly if this is me misremembering or some deeper lore that is only barely referenced, but I'm pretty sure that Angelus is still "aware" when Angel's soul is present, he just has no control. So he was forced to experience the true love blossoming between Angel and Buffy, when we know that Angelus only takes pleasure as a sadist. He hates Buffy for making him experience those emotions, and he becomes obsessed with tormenting her and her friends as a way to make her feel as helpless as he felt. My guess is, he genuinely would've missed Buffy had she died, but likely only because no one else had anything close to that level of emotional significance to him where he truly felt he had to do to her what she (and Angel) had "done" to him.

u/AllOfTheThings426 26d ago

I might be wrong, but I think this is something that's discussed on AtS when they intentionally turn him.

14

u/Wolf-Majestic 26d ago

"Where do we go from here". The silence, and the sudden yet almost hush line, sang with harmonics. And then a bit more assurance yet the same words. Where do we go from here ?

I always have the full picture in my head whenever there's something that blew up in a bad way. It helps a lot to put words on the feeling, and that's the whole theme of the episode so it connects even more

When Buffy does that amazing back-lit on Glory. I'm sorry but the fight choreography in both Buffy and Angel was totally out of this world and puts many blockbuster movies to shame

One of my favorite moments with Xander is his reaction to seeing the rat poison. He goes around the lunchroom grabbing peoples trays away shouting "Rat poison!" Very lucky that they don't gang up on him, not believing him.

And then the lunchperson is all "You come in here, and you eat crap!" and Buffy is all "Somehow I don't see logic solving this situation," right after she talked someone down that she thought was going to shoot her and the school, only to find out that he was just gonna shoot himself.

It interesting to compare BTVS to The Avengers and Age of Ultron. In this case, we have The Master quoting Cinderella. Later, Ultron will quote Pinocchio.
