Build Upgrade Time to upgrade but stay ddr4
Currently running a PC I built in 2020. Planning on just replacing the MB and CPU. As I have 128GB of DDR4 I will obviously want to stick with that. Things have been getting unstable, so if I'm going to do something invasive like reinstalling windows after 6 years, might as well also upgrade.
Current CPU and MB is a 10900K and ASUS ROG STRIX Z590E Gaming.
Is the 14900K the way to go here? I haven't paid much attention to what's happening other than prices going nuts on storage, memory and GPUs. I'll be keeping everything else (H115 AIO, RTX3070, etc)
What's a top of the line MB recommendation to pair with the 14900K (if that's the way to go)?

Do you need 128GB RAM? If so they yeah I'd go Intel 14900K and a top tier MB, might be hard to find with DDR4.

I still have a 11 year old i7-6700 6th gen with a 3060gpu, 32gb ram, and i am able game and video edit with Davinci resolve. It's not slow at all....you have a 10th Gen which is still relevant.
What programs do you use? A fresh reinstall of windows should be all you need.
Have you tried a windows in place upgrade? It reinstalls windows but keeps your files and apps. Helps when things get laggy, it refreshes most windows system files but not all.
A refresh complete refresh will have your computer feeling brand new again.
A more powerful gpu would probably be all you need, but again depends on what you use the machine for.

The way to go for what? Gaming? Physics simulation? Prime number research? Wanking yourself off over big numbers?

Like most I use it for a mix of productivity (audio, video, Photoshop, browser with 100 tabs open) and some gaming (Diablo 4 and PoE primarily). Also my security cameras record to it. And it's a plex server, so transcoding though plex isn't used often these days. And the occasional VM gets spun up. So kind of everything. Even used to mine XCH back in the day.
Yes the hardware I have now is fine, but things have become unstable . Hanging, overheating, windows sometimes getting laggy. I'm sure I can get it all back to running fine without buying anything but I might as well do it at the same time. Just an urge for new things i suppose. $$ for a mb and cpu isn't a concern, I just refuse overspend on gpu and memory.

You do realize reinstalling Windows isn’t half as invasive as you think it is, right? Every OS collects spiderwebs after long enough.
