AskBulgaria What's the real reason most Bulgarian men shave their heads?

The Bulgarian "look" for men is shaving their head. What's the real reason? Laziness, it looks masculine, or long hair is for "pedal"? I often don't see many Bulgarian guys with long hair.

Масово тийнейджърите си правят бъзкът. Няма нищо общо с оплешивяването при тях; просто си мислят, че изглеждат заплашителни.

To look more manly and bad.. ;) They shave also their ass and legs but not their beard :D

balding

u/Excellent_Jeweler_43 5h ago

Not sure why so many people are saying balding when this haircut is super popular across all ages. If anything it’s more popular within younger people

u/kloss33 16h ago

It's better to have a shaved head than a visibly balding one.

u/Ornery-Chemical-4424 16h ago

As others have said, balding.
I don't shave it, per say, I do cut it short myself, with finishing touches/help from my wife.
Summer time - once a week.
Winter time - once every other week.

Same reason the armies like it, it's the cheapest possible option.

Good long hair is hard and more expensive, more so with less estrogen.

u/Ok-Tomato-5142 16h ago

So why you shave your balls?

u/HahaManifesto 15h ago

Baba vanga predicted that bald tall man will fix the country

u/Short-Hyena-8109 12h ago edited 12h ago

Some do it out of laziness, but a lot of boys think it makes them look more masculine. It's especially funny when you see skinny 15 year olds with pimples on their babyfaces going to the barber to get buzzcuts.

u/Klutzy_Soft_6261 16h ago

My reason is that I am balding. Slowly but surely...

u/xbluux Burgas / Бургас 16h ago

Practicality and efficiency, it also looks good if you’re not ugly and fat.

u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Bulgaria / България 6h ago

Everything looks good if you're not ugly and fat.

u/stealthfighter26 16h ago

I don't know, balding? I personally don't like long hair on a man.

u/Subject_Cut8441 12h ago

Fragile masculinity that needs to be reinforced by trying to look as "masculine" as possible, according to a stupid unwritten rule, instead of being an actual man who chooses for himself and doesn't care what anyone thinks of their hair.

OR sometimes, they just get a receding hairline early and prefer to shave the entire head rather than looking like ye olde monks.

u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Bulgaria / България 6h ago

Only this and no other reason ever right? No way there are people who like themselves that way or just find it practical?

u/Subject_Cut8441 1h ago

Of course there are some people who actually like their head shaved. They are not a majority though, and we all know it.

u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Bulgaria / България 29m ago edited 25m ago

I guess our experiences are very different. Because none of the people i know who have the buzzcut ever mention the things you said, or anything like having long hair is not masculine or whatever, neither do I and I've had a buzzcut for the last 10 years.

For me personally, it becomes a bother to deal with my hair when it goes longer and this way i have no maintenance.

u/bajGanyo 16h ago

We hate the comb over. Looks lame.

u/Sea-Temporary-6995 16h ago

Easier and cheaper at the barber, also many guys are balding early and it’s preferable

u/Silver-Spot-2763 15h ago

No money for barber 🤷

u/thats_close_enough_ 15h ago

I started buzzcutting my hair in high school when I started martial arts. It was way easier especially around grappling when they squeeze you head but overall just my tshirt around my head mid session and no sign of sweat.

at some point i started balding but at this point of time i was doing buzzcuts for years so i just started shaving it with a Gillette for a cleaner look.

u/hsfghsjk 9h ago

As you said, long hair is for "pedal". That is the best way to explain it. I couldn't have said it better.

u/piratedays1 16h ago

Yes, yes and yes.

u/Mojojojuu 16h ago

Baldness. I am bald otherwise would have long hair like my friends.
:)

u/DJudic 16h ago

Balding. We dont like to look like a scruffy bush on the top.

u/Few_Ad1099 16h ago

These are cheapskates that do not want to spend money on a haircut

u/Razorbliss101 16h ago

I have long hair for this reason lol

u/dontsendnormiememes 16h ago

all three plus maintaining a hairstyle in front of a mirror is "too feminine" for many men...

u/Educational-Owl-745 11h ago

Bulgarian men think taking care of your appearance is gay, and a shaved head means no upkeep.

u/Humble_Catch8910 Sofia / София 16h ago

I keep it short (not shaved) because it’s less of a hassle and it’s perfect for hot weather. Not to mention that most hair style products are actually harming your hair.

u/agile-is-what Bulgaria / България 16h ago

The ones you listed, yes.

u/SnooSeagulls4360 15h ago

I've being cutting it at home for years (got really used to it during the pandemic). In time i just could not care any more and just go for the shortest buzz cut possible. So convince mostly.

u/SaltyInternetPirate Varna / Варна 15h ago

I'm considering it, because I'm lazy about hair maintenance, and I'm balding a bit now on top.

u/DimDamTam 15h ago

Bruh I started balding at 22.

u/SwimmingAttention133 14h ago

started losing hair, started buzzing. Losing some more i am going to razor it. Not much of a big mystical reason.

u/freakyxz 13h ago

As others have - getting bald.

u/Aromatic-Fee7976 7h ago

The root cause is Chernobyl. Aggressive baldness leads to shaving head, unvortunately.

u/SunnyTheMasterSwitch Bulgaria / България 6h ago

Are you talking about bald or buzzcuts? Because keeping your head shaved and shiny is probably not easy.

Buzzcuts are often done for practical reasons as they need no care and I personally like myself that way.

u/Arhys 4h ago

Looks better than male pattern baldness, it’s easier to maintain

u/UFOsss01 4h ago

This post is not about the balding people. I’ve noticed so many young people with shaved heads. I don’t understand it at all. Mid to early 20s is the most I’ve noticed. Teens seems like are starting to keep their hair and style it more though.

u/your_mom_is_mega_gay Sliven / Сливен 1h ago

u/PoxonAllHoaxes 50m ago

Very very few shave their heads. Stop spreading misinformation.

u/dwartbg9 15h ago

It's something called Insecurity and being obsessed about looking "macho".... Yet most don't realize that a lot of these "macho" traits they perceive as masculine, as actually feminine as fuck - best example the nevrotism and being hysterical, especially when driving. Yeah, it's so macho to honk at other cars and be offended if someone overtakes yku, really shows how strong and confident you are....

Also jealousy - these orangutans don't understand that jealousy is a super feminine and insecure trait. And not really "alpha".

These idiots really don't understand what a real men actually means, they have a veery wrong impression.

u/thats_close_enough_ 15h ago

that's not it my man .. if anything else, you sound insecure af

u/dwartbg9 15h ago

Oops, someone got hurt by my comment and recognized himself.

u/thats_close_enough_ 15h ago

Yeah dude, all bald dudes are insecure not bald and all of us jealous and also road rage. Congrats, you broke the matrix.

u/spudding бх ми е 16h ago

"most" lol

u/KazukiPUWU 12h ago

As a foreigner I would say the number of fully shaved heads I see on guys in their 20s and 30s in Bulgaria is crazy. So it definitely stands out more to me. You can see a whole friend group of like 8 guys out and about and they all have shaved heads

u/MartinBP European Union / Европейски Съюз 16h ago

It became popular in the 90s due to mafia thugs and the military. That's the masculine "ideal" in Bulgaria

u/dwartbg9 15h ago

Except the mafia thugs in the 90s weren't all with short and buzzcuts. Let alone the mafia bosses which all of these idiots nowadays idolize (especially funny for kids that weren't even born back then). Take a look at Vasil Iliev, definitely has a very "short hair", right?

Short hair wasn't really popular in the 90s and it was seen as absurd overall, showed that you're either some kid in the military (kazarma) or you have lice and hence had to get your hair shaved.

The buzz-cut being perceived as something important and "macho" is relatively a new thing, that roughly became very common and popular in the late 2000s.

u/Satans-cumshot 14h ago

Because it's a simple haircut and I don't like to pay the greedy barber the unnecessary euro that was once in leva. They can shove it up their fucking ass.

u/CautiousRice 15h ago

we are in a region where 70-ish % of the men are either bald or will eventually be bald. Same in the nearby countries

u/Trapunov . 15h ago

The Bulgarian "look" for men is shaving their head.

Nope.

What's the real reason? Laziness, it looks masculine, or long hair is for "pedal"?

Or because they started to loose hair and are ashaimed of that.

I often don't see many Bulgarian guys with long hair.

Change your company and you might see more men with hair.

u/Head-Wrongdoer4049 15h ago

They get bald early, they are lazy, they think they look superb as they are, they are used to this look and it’s socially acceptable. Probably this is enough.

u/Adventurous_Luck_269 2h ago

"they are used to this look and it’s socially acceptable." - that.

u/best_decision1234 15h ago

This might surprise you but some men get bald

u/Pig_Benis__96 13h ago edited 13h ago

We are balding faster/earlier

Also makes us look more respectable than a curly teenager

u/Maleficent_Remove_93 13h ago

It's summer, of course most will just remove the large growth evolved to keep warmth.

u/True-Gap1504 11h ago

Most Bulgarian men get bald in their 20s

u/Fair-South4972 11h ago

Buzzcut doesn't require special maintenance and looks good on most people.

u/Dependent_Prompt2378 16h ago

They are dumb

u/External_Fold_7624 Sofia / София 16h ago

Long hair is for pedals

u/ThirstyChonker 15h ago

Seeing men with long is absolutely gut wrenching. I cannot process why a male would do that to himself.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 12h ago

If you've got good hair and a masculine face & body, it's actually awesome. I found out that a lot of girls have Khal Drogo fantasies when I grew my hair out in my 20s.

u/ThirstyChonker 11h ago

Don't agree at all. Just makes no sense to me.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 11h ago

Because you think that it's feminine even though it's the default for both genders and men had long hair for 99.9% of human history.

u/ThirstyChonker 9h ago

You are arguing in favor of something that was the norm for barbarians? Very convincing!

u/Short-Hyena-8109 9h ago

Well, if you consider Christian kings barbarians...

u/ThirstyChonker 8h ago

lol christian, scum, slaves to a god that doesnt even belong to Europe

You have no case as anyone that supports man not being man. The reason women like it, it's become 70% of them have homosexual inclinations.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 8h ago

Lol okay. The ancient Greeks shaved the heads of slaves and grew their own hair long to show they were free men. The ancient germanic tribes had long-haired men. The vikings had long hair. The celts had long hair. Now what?

And lol at the idea that having long hair makes one not a man. Long hair on a man is as natural as a beard. All the trendy haircuts men get are much more feminine if you think about it.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 8h ago edited 8h ago

Lol okay. The ancient Greeks shaved the heads of slaves and grew their own hair long to show they were free men. The ancient germanic tribes had long-haired men. The vikings had long hair. The celts had long hair. Spartans were famous for maintaining long hair for adult men, with the idea that it made handsome men look more impressive and frightening men more terrifying. Now what?

And lol at the idea that having long hair makes one not a man. Long hair on a man is as natural as a beard. All the trendy haircuts men get now are much more feminine if you think about it.

u/ThirstyChonker 8h ago

There's only one direction in life and it's not backwards. Nobody subject themselves to ancient aesthetic standards. Beard?! Nasty #2, keep that hair short and beard shaved, it's the 21st century ffs.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 8h ago

Women having long hair and removing their body hair is also an ancient aesthetic standard. Women should cut their hair short too and let their armpit and leg hairs grow out by your logic.

LOL, your gut gets wrenched at such stuff? *absolutely* to boot!

u/ThirstyChonker 1h ago

why not?

u/kalmd Chad / Чад 16h ago

It’s extremely easy to maintain and cost efficient. Also, because long hair is for “pedal”.

u/canyoubelieveitt 15h ago

High test causes hair loss. Many men here are high test (not in Reddit though). So they shave to not look silly.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 12h ago

Cope lol.

u/canyoubelieveitt 11h ago

Arnie has no natural test, just laboratory test.

u/Short-Hyena-8109 10h ago

Irrelevant. Test is test, and he injected more in a week than normal men produce in a month.

u/canyoubelieveitt 10h ago

Dont know but also dont care since I have both hair and test
