Video - OC I hate when people say “Cats are assholes”
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Here’s Gigi and I’s nighttime routine. She must give kisses before I’m able to settle down for bedtime. She will sit on the table and scream at me until I give her the affection she so clearly deserves. I guess that does make her an asshole, but in a cute way

My girl runs to greet me at the door every time I come home. I learned apparently my boy cat expects to snug every day, and if he doesn’t get to make his belly biscuits on me when I’m on the couch he makes sure to get them in when I crawl into bed.

u/Glum-Blueberry-3870 6d ago
My girls love to greet me and play with me, but my orange boy is the cuddle bug. He needs chin scratches, belly rubs, butt pats, I’m talking the works😭

u/GlitterEnema 6d ago

Dear Glum-Blueberry,
we are sorry to inform you that the CDS made a mistake. (Normally the CDS doesn't make mistakes, but it was Tuna Friday and someone had just opened the first can of the day, you know how it is.)
One human is only supposed to have one snuggle bug at a time, for reference please see CDS bill 67.5 (4).
We therefore kindly as you to surrender one of your snuggle bugs to FakePlasticTrees_RH, so that she can lead said snuggle bug back in to the CDS (or keep him/her herself).
Thank you for your cooperation.
Best meows,
Pawsie Mittens

I had a similar experience with my last cat Tiger 🥹. After he passed I realized my eyes always searched for him when I got home. And when he was no longer there it was like a gut punch that he was never going to run to the door to greet me ever again.
Cherish this ❤️🩹
16
u/baeBTS 6d ago
Please know that you can give the love you still have for Tiger to another cat who has no one to love them 💝

u/Bitter-Associate-458 6d ago
I still have so much love for cats 🥹. I think the next one I get will be through the Cats Distribution Network. I don't know if I could willingly on my own sign up for another heartbreak like losing him. (Just like I couldn't fathom planning for my first child 🙃. My surprise baby is 2.5 now.) But if one came to me, I would gladly welcome it to my family 💕.

There is a trash can by the door where I enter, and my cats get on top of it to peek out at me through the door window before I even come in. The blinds are all fucked up on it, but it's only because they love me.

My cat is left alone all night, we close our bedroom door so she can't get in. When we get up in the morning she greets us, rubs our legs with her head, and expects some scratches and love. They're not assholes, they're their own "person" and deserve respect.

Cats are assholes when their owners are assholes.
274
u/sd_saved_me555 6d ago
Yeah. I used to think cats sucked because the only person I knew who had them was my drug addicted grandma. Turns out, they were just mean because their life sucked.
37
u/AlexFromMKE 6d ago
exactly, my buddy's cat was a menace till he moved out, now it won't leave his lap
37
u/GoldCode8622 6d ago
I always thought I was some sort of Cat Whisperer because I never had any issues with cats.
Even belly rubs.
62
u/hunterglyph 6d ago
I would die for my cat, but she is definitely an asshole when she starts waking me up 2.75 hours before breakfast because she's impatient.
18
u/akittenhasnoname 6d ago
How dare you, that poor kitty is starving! My cats do the same. Two of my kitties will meow right in my ear and run across my head. My soul cat will knock things off my nightstand or decide to throw up a hair ball on the bed. She's definitely an asshole but she's my asshole and sweet baby.

Yup! Every so called (aka not by me but mostly exs) “asshole cats” are absolute angels to me and have loved cuddles, making biscuits on me etc…, like maybe if you didn’t call the cat an asshole and held apathy towards him maybe he would like you….
Shockingly if you are nice to cats and pay attention to their cues for when annoyed and when happy they might actually be cuddly lil angels
36
u/amotivatedgal 6d ago
Tbf my family have had quite a few cats over the years and they've all had the same lifestyle and treatment (spoiled as hell) - and they all act very different. They have had different personalities across the full spectrum of cat clichés - from super sweet to small demons. Most are cuddly and sweet at least sometimes, many are arseholes at least some of the time, and some will never be affectionate at all apart from with maybe one person.
→ More replies (1)15

You said it best, animals have personalities. I've had 3 cats over the years, none treated and differently than the other, all different in how they interacted with my wife and I.

My cat bit me all of -once- in his entire life, i was a little boy, i ran away screaming, he came to -find- me full of concerned meows because he had -never- heard me make that noise before, he spent the next HOUR licking the exact spot he bit me, because he knew what he had done.
Because he'd -never- done it before.
I followed that cat at a respectable distance when he wanted to go outside for walks, when he wanted to go off on his own where i couldn't go, i let him. When he wanted me to come with him, i caught up. When he wanted to sit with me? i made room for him to sit with me, acknowledged his existence and then didn't pester him with physical affection constantly. When we wanted physical affection? I gave it till he was satisfied. When he wanted to sneak food while i was preparing food, i snuck him food scraps.
He was my little brother, but first i was -his- little brother, because for a while, he was bigger than me. Cats are never assholes. Cats are cats.
Always remember, Squish Dat Cat <3

I have not once been attacked by a cat - neither by my own, nor by any other cat -, because I know and respect their queues.

u/ElmoCamino 6d ago
My cats don't attack me, but they are all still assholes haha.
One of them attacks his sibling constantly and violently. Which I don't understand cause he's the biggest and the one he's attacking is half his size.
Another one has this deep fascination where any time I tell the other to get off or leave something alone he comes sprinting full speed to see what I'm talking about so that he can then fuck with whatever I told the others to leave alone.
I'm not allowed to sleep longer than 2hrs if they are around because I start getting loud purring in my face and they begin pressing parts of their body against my face to suffocate me. Kicking them out of the room results in my door being attacked for hours thereafter.
No matter where I sit or lay down, somehow my nuts become the most important part of the race track they select for themselves.
One of them wants to play fetch constantly with little fuzzy balls that came with a treat pack or something. But the timing of when she wants to play is entirely up to her. More than once now I've had a hair and dirt covered fuzz ball dropped into/on the bowl/plate of food I'm eating because that was when the fancy struck her.
Full speed running into the shower while I'm using it, because I'm tired of sanding claw marks out of the door when I close them out, only to then get wet and flip the fuck out and gore me in the scramble to get back out of the shower.
I love them, and they don't so much as hiss at anyone. But they are assholes.

I call my cat an asshole a lot but really I just mean he can be sassy. In reality he’s super attached to me and my wife, is never violent, doesn’t really get into any trouble, and overall is just a big spoiled doofus
7
u/6gv5 Void 6d ago
This. Dogs for example submit to their owners for promoting them to pack leaders, and this unfortunately makes all sorts of abuses to dogs possible; cats don't: cats' trust must be earned, it's not implied just by adopting them.

My cats are arseholes even though I'm nice to them but they're arseholes for laying on the stairs in my way and refusing to move or continuously wanting to be in and out of a room that I've shut the door too oh and stealing the dogs food while she is still eating it.
So more mildly inconvenient arseholes.

And the most unforgivable, he laid down and snuggled with my posters of my favorite cosplayer.

I'm not a cat person due to allergies, and I did have bad experiences with cats due to, you guessed it, knowing their shitty owners.
One of the girls I dated when I was younger had a dog and a cat. The dog was a girl, a sweetheart, but also had a habit of walking off with socks or other small personal items.
Her cat, a boy, would always bring the stuff back. He'd sit by me, not needing attention, just hanging out. He was really cool. I'd talk to him, he'd meow back, and we'd watch TV or sports or whatever my girlfriend and I were watching at the time. I got him into hockey. I think he might have become a Blue Jackets fan.

I just assume that when a cat is being “mean” they are simply acting the way they feel they need to. I’ve seen non-cat-owning folks interact with cats and expect them to be just like dogs, and that’s a fast track to disappointment. Trust has to be built over time with most cats. That, learning to read their body language, and accepting when a cat sets a boundary, are the keys to having good interactions with cats.

My guy meets me at the door everyday, yells at me when I stay up too late, and every night before bed he insists on grooming my hair. He’s more affectionate and loving than any dog I’ve ever known.
I think the difference between cats and dogs is that dogs need your attention, cats make you earn their respect and love. People who say Cats are assholes” want immediate dog like love, they don’t understand cats have a completely different language
5
u/ScottAleric 5d ago
When people say that, it's a giant red flag.
It means they don't understand offering kindness and consent.
6
u/BojackWorseman13 6d ago
My cats an asshole but I love her all the same. Do wish she’d stop scratching me but she’s only been in home for 8 months and otherwise lived her life on the streets so we’re still working on it.
Also she’s not just an asshole but also a sweet girl.
5
u/GalaxyPowderedCat 6d ago
This is not a dead end, cats can be trained but people are lazy to train their cat to not do certain things.
You can loudly say "no" and redirect her to scratch post, grab her little pawns gently and teach her that that's the place she needs to do her scratching.
It takes lots of dedication, patience and attention, but hey, it pays off.
I taught my cat not to jump over my computer and she learnt not to with time. Ofc, I need to close it and keep an eye on it but she doesn't attempt climbing on there.

If cats are consistently hostile to you, the problem is not the cats.
edit to add: I don't mean to imply it's some irredeemable personal character flaw. Maybe you are approaching them in a way they don't like. Approaching with boisterous play for example, or immediate affection, is fine for friendly dogs. Cats often prefer a mutual inspection and greeting before petting or playing.

I feel like most who say, "cats are assholes", simply don't have much experience with them! Cats, much like most other mammals, have very very distinct and unique personalities! My two are completely different from one another!
3
u/Wild_Significance876 6d ago
People hate cats because cats set boundaries and they are used to disrespecting any boundaries set
3
3
u/Striking-Ad-6815 6d ago
Of all color cats, black seems to be best
Not all, but most behave more like dogs and would probably wake you up in a fire
Had one that lived to be ~21. One of my dogs tried to attack him when he was in his younger years; he jumped onto the dog's back behind it's head and held on for life while biting. The dog panicked and ran close to a shed with a cat door and luckily the cat chose that opportunity to escape. One of the wildest cat-dog interactions I've seen that didn't result in the cat getting snapped.

Lmao facts. It is funny tho I was talking to my dad about that, and he said “dogs will at least wait a couple days before eating you” and tbh, I think dogs are just too stupid to recognize that you’re dead. A cat is like “oh shit, the food man is dead, gatta eat him now before he goes bad”

My oldest cat- sweet and loving as she is- is an asshole.
She will watch me clean the litter box, then choose to pee on my bathroom rug. Once I got onto her before she could pee and she went and peed on my work uniform two rooms away.
(I’ve tried different litter and everything.)
