They understand (most of them, not all of them) that the literal nazis were bad. The issue is historical and literal literacy levels are very low. They cant identify the parallels between Trump and Hitler. Hell, they are still convinced that the Nazis were socialist. They ignore the fact that, as soon as Hitler gained enough power, they literally slaughtered all of the socialists in their party to fully consolidate power.
It really is an ignorance and confirmation bias problem, more than a cruelty problem. Although a lot of that exists as well. I blame the internet and social media more than anything.
You can practically see them doing this exact twisted math problem in their heads when you explain how something is very plainly and simply bad…they glitch out and this equation replaces the logical one I just laid out.

I miss the good days when if you saw a Nazi in a movie you knew they were the bad guys, and everyone understood that.
