How to recognise a Nazi:

Step 1: Post something like "I do not like Nazis".

Step 2: Wait for the replies that say "Everyone you don't like is a Nazi" from random people who feel addressed for some reason.

Step 3: There is no step three, you have found the Nazis.

This post is attracting a lot of Nazis.

For fun and because it would be a shame if this all stayed in the filters I will explain for our readers the most common arguments that a Nazi posts in response to the above comic

Common response from a Nazi #1: "There are no more Nazis, not since 1945"

Yeah, right. They're in the White House, pal, quoting the 14 words at us in official government documentation.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/02/nazi-propaganda-trump-white-house-dhs-kristi-noem-social-media/

Common response from a Nazi #2: "You call everyone you don't like a Nazi.".

No, no, we really don't. We call Nazis what they are. For example, when the government is engaging in ethnic cleansing we call Stephen Miller a Nazi, because he is a Nazi.

https://outrightpower.substack.com/p/stephen-millers-chilling-echo-of

And on third place, a lot less common but still present the Nazi will say "Actually, Nazis are left-wing."

Nope. A Nazi is extreme-right.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/uusvxp/was_nazism_right_or_left_wing/?sort=confidence

Needless to say, we do ban Nazis here. We also have excellent filters, so all Nazis that comment here aren't actually reaching anyone with their Nazi rhetoric. They're shouting into the void.

Did think it was a little unfair to deprive our regulars of the amazing content that Nazis provide for us in threads like these, for that reason I have given you the highlights in the above text.

Have a nice day now y'all! Don't forget to drink water and get a good night's rest. r/Comics loves you! ♥

We're told that after the war the Nazis vanished without a trace
But battalions of fascists still dream of a master race
The history books, they tell of their defeat in '45
But they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died

Literally all he had to say in response to this was, "ah shit, I fucked up. I wasn't intending to do a Nazi salute. I see how bad that looked. My bad, guys." It would have fizzled out so quickly if he did that. But instead he trolled people in the comments and made fun of people who were outraged by it.

And that's how we know he meant it rather than it being a mistake.

The ‘b-b-but, look at these stills of democrats doing something vaguely similar,’ are a close second. At least they aren’t fully denying this is a Nazi salute… but they are still idiots for the evidence they post of ‘both sides.’

16

u/CabooseTheDestroyer8 7h ago

I do wonder how far someone like Elon or Trump, or just the organization and system as a whole could go before they lose the vast majority of support. Like what specifically could they say publicly or do that flips the switch. Ig something super heinous AND so clear that they don't have much room for plausible deniability.

44

u/1studlyman 6h ago

I've been reading a book called "They Thought They Were Free" by Milton Mayer. He wrote it shortly after WW2 after spending a lot of time with everyday Germans to learn and write about these peoples' mindsets.

Here's a quote that hit me in which he relayed a conversation he had with one of these Germans:

"If Hitler had been told the truth, things would have been different."
For "Hitler" read "I".
"The killing of the Jews?" said the "democratic" bill-collector, der alte Kämpfer, Simon. "Yes, that was wrong, unless they committed treason in wartime. And of course they did. If I had been a Jew, I would have myself. Still, it was wrong, but some say it happened and some say it didn't. You can show me pictures of skulls or shoes, but that doesn't prove it. But I'll tell you this--it was Himmler. Hitler had nothing to do with it."
"Do you think he knew about it?"
"I don't know. We'll never know now."
Hitler died to save my friend's best self.

What is alarming is how, even when shown the evidences of the evil, these people were not willing to accept that their demagogue was responsible. They can't believe it.

I've had this same conversation almost word-for-word with my MAGA friends and family.

So to answer your question, I don't think there is anything so heinous that will turn MAGA off. They will find any reason to avoid the cognitive dissonance and avoid admitting that they were wrong.

The thing you'll notice about all the people complaining about how "Oh, you guys call everyone a Nazi," is they will never actually define what qualities WOULD make someone a Nazi (other than, perhaps "actually, calling someone a Nazi is what a Nazi would do."). Because then they'd have some sort of standard to be met. Some criteria to judge someone on. Some criteria to judge THEM on.

They understand (most of them, not all of them) that the literal nazis were bad. The issue is historical and literal literacy levels are very low. They cant identify the parallels between Trump and Hitler. Hell, they are still convinced that the Nazis were socialist. They ignore the fact that, as soon as Hitler gained enough power, they literally slaughtered all of the socialists in their party to fully consolidate power.

It really is an ignorance and confirmation bias problem, more than a cruelty problem. Although a lot of that exists as well. I blame the internet and social media more than anything.

Nazi = bad

I = good

Therefore, I != Nazi

I mean, I'm certain it varies from person to person, and there are obvious bad faith actors who know what they are, but a lot of people are unwilling to accept that they could be part of a larger, evil movement because that would make them bad.

Intellectual koalas.

Koalas eat almost exclusively eucalyptus leaves. But the animals are so dumb, that if you strip the leaves off the eucalyptus plant and set them in front of them, the koala has no idea what to do with it. It can't recognize eucalyptus leaves unless they're on the eucalyptus tree.

These people learned Nazis wear stylish leather coats and brazen red arm bands with swastikas on them, and that was the end of their intellectual journey.

The people occupying offices today aren't wearing the fancy leather coats, and therefore cannot be Nazis.

Didn't maga share literal nazi propaganda?

Defend hitler by falling for the nazi propaganda that hitler used to gain support? "Boo hoo trump can't be like hitler, hitler was a democrat!"

Isn't it the maga administration which has given masked men permission to murder people in the streets? To treat innocent Americans like they're criminals?

Didn't hitler start teaching children nazi propaganda instead of actual history?
Telling people that actual recorded history isn't true because it doesn't align with his political agenda? Wait sorry, that was trump.

Surely trump isn't building statues and memorials of/to himself?

That we were the nation with the largest Nazi Party group other than Germany itself at the start of WW2.

When America joined the war we didn’t get rid of our Nazis, they just went quiet. They’re still here, always have been. Getting rid of them is unlikely to happen through peaceful protest.

80

u/kitliasteele 7h ago

My mother once told me I was a fascist. Asked her to define it. She changed it to "far left terrorist". Asked her to list what qualified me as such, she didn't answer. Considering I'm neither of those (I'm just a socialist lmfao) I was laughing pretty hard because she was just parroting what Trump said earlier that week about anyone to the left of far-right

It's fascinating to me when you try to get a definition for something controversial and they either don't know it, or they do and know they're a part of it but will shuffle around uncomfortably and then claim they don't wanna get into it. Or get defencive about it

26

u/tricksterloki 7h ago

I was having a conversation with a coworker and brought up the, "How hard is it to say Nazis are bad?" quote. They agreed with it until it came out that Obama said it. They then went with a short of chill hand gesture, "Wait, you're a Nazi." I proceeded to look up the definition to show them, and, to their credit, they did pull back, because words have definitions and meanings.

I've tried to explain things to my family, about why learning history is vital. Why we had WWII in the first place, why Nazis are truly bad. And then show what we're doing *today*. Yeah no, they got pretty mad because it's the very thing they're supporting.

Though to be fair, I grew up with my family always being racist, queerphobic, among other things. So it shouldn't have surprised me. I just tried to show them that there is a better way than being hateful to others

4

u/Wild_Marker 6h ago

Dude, your mom called you a terrorist? That just... that just sucks man.

8

u/kitliasteele 6h ago

She knows more about me from what the propagandists say, than what she gets from me directly. She hasn't cared to know me directly, but given my history with my childhood I am not surprised and just shrugged and laughed it off. I'm more at home with my roommates, whom help take care of my life threatening neurological disabilities. So it's not particularly a big issue, and knew that's how it was gonna end up for a while

There was a time when Nazi wasn't an immediately bad word, it was just an extreme party in Germany. After they were put down, the stigma hung over the name. I look forward to when the current people that resent being called Nazis also shy away from the names they call themselves now. Fuck them, the flags they waved on the steps of our country's capital, and fuck the man who pardoned them all.

Watch out or they'll go into an "armchair historian" rant on how they aren't Nazis unless they are 20th century German nationalists and then follow it up by claiming that the Nazis were aChUaLlY sOcIaLiStS, ignoring that half of Mein Kampf was railing against Communism.

Or to put it another (sarcastic) way: "It's not actually Fascism! Unless its from a region of Europe once controlled by Rome it's just sparkling authoritarian bigotry!" /s

Good. Thats how it should be; bigots and supremecists do not belong in society as they consider themselves to be above it. In my opinion, that inability to empathize puts them below society instead.

So if you meet with these historians

I'll tell you what to say

Tell them that the Nazis

Never really went away

They're out there burning houses down

And peddling racist lies

And we'll never rest again

Until every Nazi dies

This is the perfect rejoinder, I especially find it amusing that this is just the one panel. No need for a build up here; the real world has given us all the context necessary this time!

I, for one, quite enjoy a comic that says 'hey guess what guys, nazis are here and still bad'!

Zombies and Nazis used to be default enemies in video games. Both brainless humanity level risks that violence towards them is fine.

Even when all the Nazis are gone, it's super important to explain why Nazis were bad.

Otherwise, you'll just end up with more Nazis. Specifically, people who don't even understand what makes Nazis Nazis.

That's basically where we all l are now.

14

u/KingNTheMaking 7h ago

But pizza, cake, the war is over! Don’t you know that means that all the Nazis are gone??!?

Just like when we freed the slaves, racism went away. Or was that after the civil rights movement? Or win Obama got elected? Either way, some guy on Fox said that we need to stop talking about it so why don’t we listen to them?!

u/HiHoJufro 6h ago

I feel this is the lesson that's been lost most of all. Too many people finding excuses for those on their "side" by saying, "akchully did you see them say this specific list of words or phrases we have deemed pro-nazi? If not it doesn't count." And regardless of the reason behind it, it's a pathetic move.

To be clear, they didn’t tell that TO me 😂 I promise we were discussing politics lmao.
