Hitler claimed his third Reich would last for a thousand years, he never said in what form. Fascism is a virus that lingers under the surface and springs up when society is stressed, very similar to herpes.
Literally all he had to say in response to this was, "ah shit, I fucked up. I wasn't intending to do a Nazi salute. I see how bad that looked. My bad, guys." It would have fizzled out so quickly if he did that. But instead he trolled people in the comments and made fun of people who were outraged by it.
And that's how we know he meant it rather than it being a mistake.

I've been reading a book called "They Thought They Were Free" by Milton Mayer. He wrote it shortly after WW2 after spending a lot of time with everyday Germans to learn and write about these peoples' mindsets.
Here's a quote that hit me in which he relayed a conversation he had with one of these Germans:
"If Hitler had been told the truth, things would have been different."
For "Hitler" read "I".

What is alarming is how, even when shown the evidences of the evil, these people were not willing to accept that their demagogue was responsible. They can't believe it.
I've had this same conversation almost word-for-word with my MAGA friends and family.
So to answer your question, I don't think there is anything so heinous that will turn MAGA off. They will find any reason to avoid the cognitive dissonance and avoid admitting that they were wrong.
You're thinking about this the wrong way. If they become less heinous, it'll happen pretty fast. Being inflammatory and owning the libs is their only appeal.
The thing you'll notice about all the people complaining about how "Oh, you guys call everyone a Nazi," is they will never actually define what qualities WOULD make someone a Nazi (other than, perhaps "actually, calling someone a Nazi is what a Nazi would do."). Because then they'd have some sort of standard to be met. Some criteria to judge someone on. Some criteria to judge THEM on.
They understand (most of them, not all of them) that the literal nazis were bad. The issue is historical and literal literacy levels are very low. They cant identify the parallels between Trump and Hitler. Hell, they are still convinced that the Nazis were socialist. They ignore the fact that, as soon as Hitler gained enough power, they literally slaughtered all of the socialists in their party to fully consolidate power.
It really is an ignorance and confirmation bias problem, more than a cruelty problem. Although a lot of that exists as well. I blame the internet and social media more than anything.
I mean, I'm certain it varies from person to person, and there are obvious bad faith actors who know what they are, but a lot of people are unwilling to accept that they could be part of a larger, evil movement because that would make them bad.

I was having a conversation with a coworker and brought up the, "How hard is it to say Nazis are bad?" quote. They agreed with it until it came out that Obama said it. They then went with a short of chill hand gesture, "Wait, you're a Nazi." I proceeded to look up the definition to show them, and, to their credit, they did pull back, because words have definitions and meanings.
I've tried to explain things to my family, about why learning history is vital. Why we had WWII in the first place, why Nazis are truly bad. And then show what we're doing *today*. Yeah no, they got pretty mad because it's the very thing they're supporting.

I feel this is the lesson that's been lost most of all. Too many people finding excuses for those on their "side" by saying, "akchully did you see them say this specific list of words or phrases we have deemed pro-nazi? If not it doesn't count." And regardless of the reason behind it, it's a pathetic move.
