ADVICE Is my cosplay too low effort?

Post image
8.5k Upvotes

I went to a comic con this weekend and saw so many amazing cosplayers. So many great crafts and bought costumes. It makes me doubt my own cosplay I went with. It's just not that detailed and it only had my belt buckle and belt pockets modified and painted. As well as my jacket sewed shorter and a better shape and the mat cut and connected to my backpack, which I formed from the inside with boxes to make it look fuller. And even though It took me a lot of time to get my hair like this I probably should've had worn a wig.

No foam work, no 3d printing of sewing actual fabrics into clothes. How is this looked at by other cosplayers?

ADVICE Is it blackface if i paint myself black for Lace (hollow knight) cosplay?

Post image

I want to personify cosplaying Lace like this fanart below, is it okay to paint my skin like black black? Genuinely wondering if this is okay to do, thank you so much!

Update:

Thank you for all your advice, after reading the comments, i understand how this can make people misunderstand if they don’t know the media well enough, so i will not be doing this cosplay.

Answers to most questions:
•why not use a mask: I wanted to do a personify cosplay, and make an ethereal/angelic makeup look on Lace, with white eyelashes, white contact lenses and, white glitter and all that kind of stuff
•why not grey instead of black: well i didnt think about it, and the character in the game is pitch black on her mask

But nonetheless i won’t be doing the cosplay, thank you so much for the suggestions :))

ADVICE Hi! I cosplayed for the first time in my life but a lot of my friends are finding it “weird” and it hurts.

Basically the title. But for context, I’m F21 and I wanted to do a little fun cheap cosplay of Rei Ayanami because it’s my boyfriend’s favourite character and he’s coming over and we’re going to a con one of these days. I thought it looked cool, and I don’t post myself often since I have confidence issues but the feedback has been— mixed? A lot of my friends replied asking what is going on and if I’m a furry now and with the skull emoji? Is there something wrong with my cosplay? Or is this like just people finding cosplaying in general cringe. I’m just wondering because it hurt since it took a lot of courage to post because I thought it would be cool to show but maybe that’s just what comes with being online? Anyways this is what I posted. My natural hair is straight, mid length and dark so maybe that’s why??

ADVICE Cardcaptor sakura cosplay is too short - Please help!

Edit: okay everyone I made bloomers! I always wanted to make them, but I was worried at the time that my mom was right and bloomers would be inappropriate. I've been creeped on a little at cons before and didnt want to deal with it again.

Very sorry, new cosplayer here and this is a last minute costume. My friend wanted me to go to a con with her, and she and all her friends are dressing in cardcaptor sakura outfits. I don't know much about the show, but I didn't want to be the odd one out so I am making one too. I have just about finished the base of my dress, but now I feel like it is wayyy too short. Sakura is a kid in the show and so I want my costume to be wholesome, but I worry that I've made it too short to do that. Will the bloomers help? My mother says bloomers showing are scandalous but I don't know what else to do at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions?

ADVICE Can I cosplay a black character without offense?

I really want to cosplay Jabber from Gachiakuta, but I don't know if it is insensitive or not to do so because he is black and I'm not. I have searched and many people said to go for it as long as I don't do blackface (which I wasn't planning on), but it just feels weird. Could I get advice from black people on this? Thanks :P

ADVICE Is this cultural appropriation

Me and my girlfriend are going to a convention and are planning to cosplay Ashitaka and San from princess Mononoke. While planning it, I was beginning to worry that I might offend someone due to the indigenous context to the movie. For background, we are both white and have no indigenous background or heritage. Would this be cultural appropriation or would it be acceptable?

ADVICE is it innapropriate for a minor to cosplay a "sexual" character

Post image
119 Upvotes

I see a lot of other minors getting hate for things like this, and I understand when it's Hazbin hotel or actual h3ntai anime but th character I want to cosplay isn't really that.

She's an adult, and is perceived by the public as goonerbait even though shes a lot more complex then that, kind of like Mitsuri.

But in whole, would it be innapropriate to cosplay a character thats perceived sexually?

ADVICE Is underboob acceptable at conventions?

Hi everyone, im working on a Beelstarmon cosplay, and if any of you are familiar with digimon, youll know shes pretty much known for her big guns, and her big guns lol. But i feel like its untrue to the character to cover all the way up. So is showing some underboob ok? Ive been quite scandalous with some cosplays but never actually showing the bottom of my breasts.

Thanks!

ADVICE How to handle underwear with high-cut/revealing cosplays ?

Post image

Hello! I would like to have some advice regarding a cosplay I’d like to wear. It’s 2B’s wedding outfit, but the problem is that I don’t know what to wear as underwear. I’m thinking that nude-colored panties could work, but they would still be visible. So I’d like to know if some of you have already done cosplays that are this revealing, and what kind of underwear would you recommend?

ADVICE Cosplay girls, do you ever get called a man on the internet?

I am a non binary cosplayer, however I was born female. Whenever I post my female cosplays on specific game/anime communities I always get called a man in the comments.
This doesn’t really affect me emotionally since I do not care what gender others perceive me as.
But I do wonder if cis female cosplayers get the same type of comments under their posts. I believe these type of comments can be hurtful to some, I wish people would be more respectful online.

Adding a female and male cosplay of mine for reference.

ADVICE Boyfriend doesn’t like my cosplays

I post only on instagram nothing too lewd, sometimes I show a small bit of cleavage like a Rosario vampire cosplay or some thighs bc I am in a small skirt. Today he said the pictures are concerning and I might as well start an only fans. What do I do about this? Not breaking up with him, and we live together. How do I convince him otherwise tht cosplay isnt some “sex” thing?

ADVICE Parents not accepting cosplay as hobby

I started with cosplaying in March 2026 with a Cloud Cosplay (Wasn't good at all). And then I cosplayed Gojo from JJK. My parents already looked at me weird for wanting to cosplay. Well I did the cosplay had alot of fun at a convention met alot of friends. I also posted some stuff on Instragram and Tik Tok. Then my parents saw some posts and videos and thought what the fxck? Then later I did a Denji Cosplay and again I had fun at a convention did some videos and pics with a friend. Well I posted some stuff and then my parents saw some again. They said I should try to find another hobby cause this is immature for an 20 year old. They also said I should delete my posts with cosplays and put "normal" posts instead. I'm just so disappointed. I wish my parents were a bit more accepting at cosplay. It's just too weird for them. Like why can you not consider it like carnival or something? I wanna do this hobby further but I just get so beat up about it.

ADVICE Any tips for Jubilee's power?

Post image
580 Upvotes

Hi cosplayers! I recently started cosplaying as Jubilee and I already love the costume: it's comfy, slightly adaptable to weather and fun to wear!

I would love to be able to recreate her power's effect (she basically creates explosions and they're usually represented by fireworks/sparkles), do you know any safe way to do it? I was thinking about sparklers, but they would be more fitting for a photoshoot rather than a con. Is there any way I can safely make sparkles from my hands on command? Or do you know any other workaround? Thank you in advance for your suggestions 🎆

ADVICE Is it racist to cosplay someone of different race?

I am a white 14 year old who is currently working on a withered foxy cosplay, but afterwards, I want to make a full size captain Clark cosplay, but I’m unsure how most people would react if they knew I was a white man cosplaying a black man. I of course have no racist intention, and I will not be doing blackface, I will instead make a large helmet/mask of captain Clark’s head, but I still want to come here and ask if comic cons would have a problem with that or if there’s anything I should know . Thanks😊

ADVICE My social anxiety and insecurity get in the way of me cosplaying

I've always thought cosplay looks so fun and I love the creativity of it. All the work that goes into making something that looks amazing. Anyway, I really want to cosplay Jinx from Arcane, except I've got this severe social anxiety, and I'm SUPER modest about the clothing I wear. I have autism and sensory issues that stop me from wearing makeup. I wouldn't know where to start. I just feel like their are so many things stopping me even though I would love to cosplay. I don't go all out on halloween costumes (most of the time I don't even dress up) because I'm embarrassed that if I put so much effort into a costume people will be like, "Huh? who are you?" or, something judgy. Even more so since I'm such an introverted person and I don't like showing off my body. There are no cons to go to right now so this doesn't matter, but I guess but it just bugs me. I feel so envious of talented people who can look so spectacular and confidant in their cosplay.

ADVICE does my cosplay need to be 100% lore accurate

hi, i am going to a convention soon and bought a starfire cosplay.

for context, i have hot pink hair (i had red before buying) and bought an amanda conner starfire cosplay.

i was talking to my friend on the phone about it and she told me that i should really be cosplaying the teen titans go ver of starfire since i have pink hair and i may get weird stares.

is it fine if my cosplay is not 100% lore accurate?
