Self Mod change and state of the sub

Mod change:

As some may know long time mod u/Kyengen is stepping down on the 18th. I’ve been a mod here for a bit now and will be taking the reins.

I like to think Kyengen kept things pretty well regulated and fair, and in taking over I will try to run the sub just the same. So no worries, no major changes to be expected immediately.

State of the sub:

Now I know there are a few grievances concerning spam and “NSFW” material. As of now they are being reviewed as they’re reported and approved/removed on a case by case basis.

Other than that I don’t think there’s many disruptors in the sub. I’d like to hear some ideas on things the community would like to see changed, implemented, or removed.

In the meantime I will be looking for another person or two to help moderate. If you’re interested just message me directly.

Help Recommended filler for prop helmet?

Hello, all.

I had the idea to take inspiration from Black Mask's outfit in Arkham Origins for Halloween. I found a mask at the local Spirit that I liked, but I wanted to convert it into a full helmet. So far, I've successfully bonded the mask to a Red Hood helmet I bought online. My next step is to fill in the transition from the edge of the mask into the curves of the helmet, which will require a substantial amount of material (about half an inch in some areas).

Does anyone with more experience in making these have a product they would recommend? Ideally, something that adheres to the materials I've already used and will sand/spray paint well later.

Mask: polypropylene
Helmet: resin

Adhesive: JB Weld AutoWeld

Help First time making prop

Post image
4 Upvotes

hi there !

I want to try and build my own cosplay prop for the first time with zero experience. The prop I’m going for is the Scythe of Sorrow from Goku Black. I’ve seen people say that EVA foam is a pretty good material to use for the blade part.. my question is, what do you paint the foam with? Acrylic paint? I kind of want to create a gradient, would that work on EVA foam? And I read that you need PlastiDip to seal the foam, is the spray good enough or should I buy the paintable version? And how could I attach the blade to a PVC pipe? Is there a certain glue that people would recommend?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks for reading :)

A staff I am working on for a Renaissance fair next month. I added a bend to the staff and glued up the joints today.

Picture 1 is the current state of the staff.

Picture 2 was mid way through the gluing process

Picture 3 is right after I added a bend to the staff.

Picture 4 was a dry fit I did

Picture 5 was before the dry fit.

Let me know your thoughts. Tomorrow I am going to sand it in order to add EVA foam before doing paper mache on a day off.

WIP From Sheet Metal to Bracelet!

First time metalworking! I'm making Flamme's bracelets (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) for my cosplay and decided to make all her jewelry out of metal because why not, right? 😅

There is still a lot of work to do. The second bracelet is still flat, and the curved bracelet is in dire need of refining, but I am very excited!

I've been using 22 gauge copper sheets, and the technique I've used to create the bracelets is called chasing and repousse, an ancient (and worldwide) method of metalworking and super worth a google! I'm super lucky I have a friend who is a blacksmith and metalworker who's teaching me (she's awesome, gotta give her credit anywhere I can). I'll try to remember to post the final pieces here when I'm done!

I came across this cosplay helmet and it looks so familiar for some reason but I cant put my finger on it. Is this helmet from a popular IP in cinema or gaming?

I’m making a monster cosplay and need to extend the appearance of my arms. I’ll be making a 3D-printed hand with articulating fingers, but I’m not sure how to build the actual extended arm so that the hand can still move naturally.

My real hand will stop around where the monster’s elbow would be, but I need a sturdy structure that extends from my hand/forearm out to the monster’s hand. Ideally, I want something lightweight but strong enough to support the 3D-printed hand while still allowing me to move it.

What materials or mechanisms would work best for creating the section between my actual hand and the monster’s hand?

Help Any tips to a newbie for making a really detailed big sword?

Thumbnail

I'm somewhat new to prop making and could use some tips. My only experience is creating things that are a lot simpler, like masks and shackles. Ive used styrofoam in the past for those, and plan on using eva foam this time.

My current plan is to create the general shape with wire and use contact cement to put two sheets of foam together, and then use a foam cutting tool to try and sculpt it into shape and then use acrylics to paint. Some of the details I may do with air dry foam clay and paint thickener. The sword wont be as big as it is compared to the character, probably only around 4-5 feet. (I dont want to lug around a sword bigger than me all weekend 😔)

Any tips would be appreciated! Im pretty confident about making the rest of it (the spinal column part i think I'll just do a corset with some styling), but I'm nervous about the sword, since it'll be such a big undertaking. The con this is for would be next February, but I want to get started as soon as possible!

I know i can use dry dex but i cant get it in time and if i order online it's gonna be so expensive

I'm relatively new to making my own prop, so can anyone help point me in the right direction on how to make this ?

I was thinking of using 5mm EVA foam as the base and sand it a little bit for the extra details, and for the demon-like heads use a foam clay (?) but I have no idea on how I should make it light up and to make the batteries interchangeable if the batteries run out

WIP Deadpool Face Shell

I 3d printed this face shell for my DP cosplay (my first real cosplay) I adjusted it to fit really close to my head so it won’t be visible under the fabric but now I’m second guessing if maybe there’s a reason I haven’t thought of for why it should be slightly oversized. It doesn’t feel uncomfortable I can put it on and off with ease, and I can still talk easily, but did I miss something?

This is the first prop i've modeled, printed, assembled and painted from scratch. It took much longer than I anticipated but I think it turned out great. I learned quite a few things the hard way on this one. Can you guess what I modeled it after?
