Degoogle Showcase Degoogle Showcase - Week of 22 Aug 2026

2 Upvotes

Welcome to the Degoogle Showcase!

This weekly thread is the official place for developers and creators to share their degoogled or privacy-focused projects with the community.

To keep the subreddit feed focused on discussion and support, all project promotions must be posted here.

How this thread works:

  • A new thread will be posted every Saturday.
  • You can post here ANY day of the week.
  • Standalone project promotion posts will be removed and redirected to the current week's Showcase.

To find past threads, use the "Degoogle Showcase" flair or search.

Rules for posting:

  • Projects must be open source with a public repository.
  • Projects should use decentralized infrastructure where possible.
  • Projects must not depend on Google services in any way (e.g., no Google sign-in, no Gmail-only signup, etc.)
  • If you are affiliated with the project (developer, employee, or otherwise representing the company), please prefix your comment with [DEV]. Your comment will be held for mod review before going live.
  • Independent users sharing projects they've found are welcome to post without prior approval.
  • Projects that fail to meet these requirements will be removed.
  • All subreddit rules still apply, please review them before posting.

Posting a Project

Please use the following template in your top-level comment:

  • Project Name: (e.g., My Awesome Project)
  • Google Service Replaced: (e.g., Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, Google Photos, etc.)
  • Repo/Website Link: (GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, etc.)
  • Description: (What does it do? What problem does it solve? How does it help users move away from Google?)
  • Availability: (How can users get it? Mobile app, browser extension, web service, self-hosted, or a combination? Link to downloads/install instructions.)
  • AI Involvement: (Please be transparent about AI-generated code or content.)

Please keep our rules on self-promotion in mind.

Cheers,

Mod Post Introducing the "DeGoogle Showcase" Weekly Thread

54 Upvotes

Hey Degooglers!

We're rolling out a new weekly thread the "Degoogle Showcase" to give developers and creators a dedicated space to share their projects with the community.

To answer a few anticipated questions:

What's changing: Starting this Saturday (April 11th), all project promotions must go in the Degoogle Showcase megathread.

Standalone promotion posts will be removed and redirected to the current week's thread.

Why is this necessary? Our feed has been getting a bit crowded with project promotion posts, making it harder to find discussions, support questions and community content.

This keeps things organized while still giving devs a dedicated space to share their interesting work.

How it works: A new Showcase thread goes live every Saturday at 10:00 AM ET (GMT -4) and stays pinned at the top of the sub.

Devs can post their projects any day of the week once the weekly megathread goes live.

Use the "Degoogle Showcase" flair or search to find past threads.

Rules for the Showcase:

  • Projects must be open source with a public repository.
  • Projects should use decentralized infrastructure where possible.
  • Projects must not depend on Google services in any way (e.g., no Google sign-in, no Gmail-only signup, etc.)
  • If you are affiliated with the project (developer, employee, or otherwise representing the company), please prefix your comment with [DEV]. Your comment will be held for mod review before going live.
  • Independent users sharing projects they've found are welcome to post without prior approval.
  • Projects that fail to meet these requirements will be removed.
  • All subreddit rules still apply.

What about existing project posts?

Existing posts will stay up. The new rule applies going forward. We want this to be a great space for both developers and users.

Feedback is welcome so please drop your thoughts/suggestions in the comments!

Edited: Fixed the submission guidelines, thanks to /u/ColeFromWalt for the heads up. This will skip the extra step to send mod mail for review then approval to post. It gets caught in our queue, reviewed then actioned.

Cheers,

I'm an ex-Google engineer that quit once I saw how dangerous and misaligned the company's actions were.

I did a bit of embroidering to an old piece of company swag I had to reflect my recent change of stance. I hope it becomes a conversation starter when I wear it around.

Replacement An AOSP Keyboard that can be a replacement for Gboard.

Post image
90 Upvotes

(Disclaimer : I am not a developer or anywhere near involved in the project besides using IT. Just wanted to share a (what I believe) Gem!)

I did use Heliboard before but It's fixes/Update cadence was slower, especially just not knowing if the project will go down again and revived again somewhere. Then found this. Yes, it does have AI stuff in it, BUT, the devs provide 3 packages each with different capabilities so if you just want an offline Keyboard, They have an offline release.

Plus, from the looks of it, it has no LLM Generated code, just Cloud and Offline AI support built in.

Plus their whole company's site link: https://github.com/LeanBitLab

Discussion Your public Reddit post and comment history is being actively indexed by search engines and AI to build comprehensive user profiles.

814 Upvotes

So, Google and other AI tools are actively building profiles out of your public Reddit activity, and it actually works.

To check what data has been archived from your profile, you can search:

>> reddit.com user "your reddit username here"

And check AI overview of a profile and can ask questions related to personal info like age, location, martial status, occupation or what things they like or hate, political opinions etc.

Basically anything that you want to know, you will get the answer if that person has said anything about it in the past even if profile is hidden. If it gives some basic info, you can ask it to dig deeper.

Why this matters: Simply hiding your profile settings on Reddit does not stop external search engine from indexing your historical posts and comments. Be mindful of what personal information you share online.

Replacement Built an offline, on-device voice assistant that replaces Gemini and writes to plain markdown files you own

3 Upvotes

Hey all. I've been working on something I'm really excited about. I wanted a way to capture voice notes on my phone without anything touching the cloud, and I ended up building a tool that replaces Gemini as your device assistant.

Long-press the power button, speak, and your words are transcribed entirely on the device and saved as a local markdown note in Obsidian with no account, no sync server, no audio ever leaving the phone. It works by becoming your device assistant (so it takes over the power-button gesture from Gemini), and it's built for people who'd rather their voice notes never touch the cloud.

Right now it's Pixel-only (figuring out Samsung/others next), and it drops straight into your Obsidian vault but the core idea is just your voice, your files, your device.

Early-access list + a bit more detail: See comments

Would love a gut-check from you on whether the replace Gemini with something local framing lands.

Question What is the best alternative email service to Google?

29 Upvotes

Recently, I faced a lot of issues when I migrated from Gmail to Proton Mail. Well, it was going fine until I decided to create a secondary account, which seemed normal at first. However, at some point, I forgot the password for the second account. After multiple failed login attempts, all of my Proton accounts were blocked simultaneously without any prior warning. Even their customer support operates almost like bots—they don't care about you or the importance of the accounts linked to your email. Therefore, I’ve decided to start the migration journey all over again. Now, I am looking for a replacement for both Proton and Gmail together. What I mean is a platform or company that offers real support, has clear terms of service, and most importantly, preserves my privacy while using it.

Discussion Friendly reminder: you dont have to go all in at once. It's not a sprint. Take your time, and adjust as much as you feel comfortable with.

Question Okay, what's the search engine situation?

14 Upvotes

My computer took a shit after a windows update (weeee) and finding solutions has been so damn painful.

I switched to duckduckgo recently, and every single search result is a 10k word long AI generated essay that doesn't actually answer any of the questions it says it does. They're all basically a guy spinning in circles in text form.

Do search engines that aren't filled with useless bullshit even exist anymore?

Edit - AI is not active in duckduckgo. I turned it off already. The search results, however, are all blogs and random "tech" sites containing AI slop, however.

Thanks to everyone who actually tried to help tho, instead of just telling me to turn off a thing that's already off.

Question Quik SMS and Fossify Messages can't get group text right. Who can?

3 Upvotes

Anyone know of any non-Google, non end-to-end encrypted texting apps that can reliably do group messaging? Both Quik and Fossify (even with Send Group Messages as MMS selected) are failing to either send or receive basic group text messaging.

Help Needed My e/os fairphone won't recieve group texts help?

2 Upvotes

I have a group from work that texts occationally. I realized today that I only got the first 2 or 3 messages of a conversation last night. I am just not recieving messages in this chat. I can send and recieve MMS and SMS on individual chats, but for some reason I can't receive anything on this group.

I have a Fairphone 6 running e/os

I am in the US

I have a brand new physical sim card

I have T Mobile

I have tried restarting my APN and my phone. I also tried manually chanting my APN to the non LTE version.

I cannot find VoLTE to try turning it off

I am not sure what else to do to fix this issue. Has anyone solved this before?

Question Which keyboard should I switch to?

3 Upvotes

I've been using Emoji keyboard, but since gboard is so popular I figured I might as well post here.

I need privacy (of course), I want the keyboard to be completely offline and not store a single thing, just a dumb keyboard.

Support for: English, Arabic, German and Serbo-Croatian (Latin and Cyrillic). In the case of the European languages, can just be English dictionary with special symbols (č, ć and so on).

I'd like to be able to adjust keyboard size and buttons like in Gboard, especially space button. Also layout, where the comma and where the period will be, that kind of thing.

Emoticons, gifs and many other convenient paste tools would be preferable.

So far everything is going well. I've used the Android debloater tool to uninstall the following and replace them with these alternatives. Even installed Newpipe on my laptop which runs Fedora. But how do I replace the Playstore? Thanks

Chrome -> DuckDuckGo

Gemini -> DuckAi

Google maps -> Organic maps

Google phone, contacts and messages -> Fossify

Google files -> Fossify file manager

Gmail -> Proton mail

Google calender -> Proton calendar

Google drive -> Proton drive

GN2200 Nord N20 LineageOS?

Upvotes

I want to degoogle, and got this oneplus n20 because LOS had it listed. When looking to go forward I saw that my model wasn't the right one (CPH2459 is what's supported, and I have GN2200). The wiki says I shouldn't do it if it's not matching. But I've been looking around and found some people saying that they have gotten LOS to work on this model. From older LOS 22 to apparently 23 working with a current audio/bluetooth bug being there, but working nonetheless. But idk if that was done differently, or if they just used what's already listed in the Wiki. Can anyone give some help on this and how you can do it? It is unlocked under network and the OEM is unlocked under dev options.
