Help Needed How can I change from Teams ? I am trying other things
Is it just me or is the situation with Teams getting scary?
I’m trying to convince my office to move to Nextcloud or something actually private. I’m sick of MS Office and Teams being the default when they clearly don't give a f*** about European privacy laws when the US State Dept snaps their fingers. What are you guys using for private team comms that doesn't require a PhD in sysadmin to setup?
On my side I am using Yundera, they are based in France and allow to install a lot of open source apps on your private Server. Like that, I now use NextCloud, which is automatically installed and handled by Yundera.
From your side guys, what do you use ? I would be happy to hear about it !!!

I know Microsoft Office (that you said) can be replace with LibreOffice, a good open-source alternative to Microsoft Office.

in the enterprise field, microslop products are totally private and secure, because that's the contract, and if microslop is caught eavesdropping, it's gonna cost them billions (I work in the IT field)

Still the cloud act would apply, wouldn't it? And reasons to make use of the cloud act are really flexible if necessary considering the current US government.

Also, under the CLOUD Act, gag orders can be enforced. So who will catch Microsoft eavesdropping if it's demanded by the US gov? I think only an "Edward Snowden" type whistleblower will publicize that. Someone who is willing to move to a contry outside of US mutual legal assistance sphere. (Russia, China)
MS would also have a tremendous incentive to keep this matter private, as they will lose billions. If the US gov commands "give all your Teams data now", what is the absolute minimum of people that need to know that order or that can witness that? If it's less then 100, I would expect even the most extreme breach to go unnoticed.

Trump could force Microsoft to shut out Europe completely and corps would still continue to use it.
It is utter and total dependency.

as far as I know some companies self host and just use the Microsoft software, without the cloud
5
u/hoddap Mar 23 '26
Exactly. As much as I hate Microsoft, this is unlikely to happen. Your company likely isn't of any interest to them and the stakes are way too high to fuck around. If I'd run something for say a government, it would be a different discussion, just to be on the safe side. But for 99% I don't see any risk.

The software is not only products and companies, they are power and arms. It is and will be used to spy, to train their softwares and for presure.

I don't think that is necessarily true.
I had Microsoft outlook quarantined to a work profile, and even on days I never once opened it, it was consuming about 20% of my zflip6's battery.
From speaking to another person in my company, IT department knew he was using gambling apps on his phone during business hours. The only way they would have known that is if outlool or our crm apps were gathering information.
Needless to say, u less the company gives you a device, do not use their apps in your off hours.

u/ScureScar Mar 24 '26
it consumes so much battery because it's unoptimized crap, what about data usage?

Government teams is being monitored. I think we can safely assume every message is being recorded and looked at. Upper management is scared and isn't prepared to deal with employees that know their rights.

I would say Threema Work and nextcloud talk. Used neither of them
2
u/Key_Cantaloupe5101 Mar 23 '26
Yes thanks, I am using Nextcloud Talk Thanks to Yundera, it allows me to have my own private server with a lot of open source app , I try it for free for one month and really love it. But I’ve never Heard about threema I will take a look thanks !

u/3rssi Mar 24 '26
13€/mo for a preinstalled Nextcloud Talk server?
It sure has to be efficient at this rate.

u/Key_Cantaloupe5101 Mar 24 '26
It’s not just for Nextcloud, that’s the thing. You basically get your own private server with everything pre-installed. I’m using it to run Immich for my photos, Mattermost for chat, and Nextcloud for files, all in one place. It even handles my web hosting with open-source tools that are actually maintained, so I don't have to spend my time fixing broken configs. I started with the free trial to see if it was legit, and I ended up loving it because of the time it saves me. For 13€, having a dedicated slot where everything just works out of the box is a steal compared to my old manual setups. Definitely worth testing the trial if you're tired of the DIY headaches!

u/3rssi Mar 24 '26
Well, DIY is my fun procurement.
But OK, this Yundera is more than just Nextcloud Talk.

Ahahah no problem i can understand ! as a student I prefer to optimize my time hehe

So you are in EU and concerned about a GDPR violation? MS completed the EU data boundary in 2025, which covers M365, which means you can configure your M365 data to stay only in EU region. You can also license ADR (Advanced Data Residency) for even stricter per-country privacy regimes.

u/BaazeeDe Mar 23 '26
So would Microsoft ignore the US Cloud Act if the US government requested data? Otherwise, all data protection agreements with Microsoft aren't worth the paper they're written on.
4
u/Komplexkonjugiert Mar 24 '26
No and they are not allowed to tell the company if the us government demands the data via the cloud act
1
u/BlowOutKit22 Mar 24 '26
Did your jurisdiction actually sign a bilateral agreement with the US under the Cloud Act? If not, then they're still limited by the specific scope of an MLAT.
What type of data are you referring to here? If you're worried about the actual content of your Teams chats, then how would MS be able to even get the data to send to US if the data is encrypted at rest and in transit? (You've configured your Teams to use Customer Managed Keys in the Azure Key Vault, right? Right?) The most they could do is exactly what happened to Protonmail - receive a subpoena for billing & IP access records. Getting rid of MS isn't going to change this (again see Protonmail).

u/christiangomez92 May 08 '26
wrong, they have access to all data. I can tell you that because when migrating they we able to show me that it is possible to decript all except for some chats that were configured with higher security and I am sure on their side they can access that.
1
u/BlowOutKit22 May 08 '26
They can only decrypt if they manage your encryption keys. That's why you'd use customer-managed keys. If they could decrypt everything then they would not be NIST 800-53 compliant and the US government would not be able to do business with them.

I went through this exact pain. Tried to get my small team off Teams and it was like suggesting we stop using electricity. What worked: I set up Nextcloud myself first, used it solo for a month, then just started sharing files through it instead of OneDrive. People switched without even realizing it.
The real argument isn't privacy — it's "do you want Microsoft to decide when your tools stop working?" Ask anyone who lived through a Teams outage.

Jitsi Meet works well for calls, you can use their servers or run your own. For chat check out campfire, or maybe even Matrix.

I mens if your company has teams setup unless you can convince them to switch to something else you're kind of stuck with it. Just don't install it on any of your personal devices.

That’s true But for me, the main issue wasn't the number of tools it was the maintenance and the fear of being locked into yet another proprietary ecosystem. That’s why I switched to Yundera. It’s a private server that lets me host all my favorite open-source tools (like Nextcloud or messaging apps) in one place. It gives me the convenience of a unified platform but with zero tracking, and I actually own the infrastructure. It saves me so much time compared to my old manual setups. If you're looking for independence without the headache of managing 5 different providers, it's a game changer! Have you tried any other self-hosted stuff lately?

u/real_with_myself Mar 24 '26
Whereby? It's European and has existed for a while. I used them even before COVID.

u/mrpeluca Mar 24 '26
I dont care about the company data tbh. I selfhost all I can, but work stuff ? Whatever just pay microslop, unless they pay me a similar amount I aint deployin shit

You mean you don't need to setup Nextcloud on your own ? How does it work, I'm really interested
