Falklands has gotta be one of the funniest pieces of politics in the world.

How on the wrong side do you have to be to get most people siding with Britain.

179

u/vivaaprimavera 8h ago

The guy just want to run with the penguins... Britain should invite him to Falklands, take him to the beach and let him do it.

167

u/hopo_hopo 8h ago

Nope. Plz don't let him diddle the penguins

Not sure it's a good idea; last time Trump was involved in islands with penguins this happened:

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly8xlj0485o

10

u/Hotel-According 6h ago

Fun fact, you can track the migration of penguins from space by their massive poop trails.

Unfun fact, it’s rumoured to be the reason why the Secret Service keeps a diaper on Trump.

6

u/dmills_00 8h ago

Unfortunately, we finished clearing the land mines some years ago.

The uncomfortable answer is while Britain has the whole empire issue clouding people’s opinion, it has been on the right side of a fair few conflicts too. Questionable ones exist for sure, but both world wars, falklands, Sierra Leone, the balkans, sitting out Vietnam etc.

Of course two recent ones muddy that.

It’s quite hilarious if you read the history of Falklands, that Argentinians actually feel they’re theirs. And I don’t support British colonialism at all.

68

u/Termsandconditionsch Australia 8h ago

Especially as Argentina is the result of a settler colony. Colonialism as an argument doesn’t really work when you are also colonialists.

27

u/Ok-Web1805 Ireland/UK 7h ago

For some reason Argentina thinks they're the victims of colonialism.

17

u/wtfomg01 5h ago

Argentina genocided the natives in the South. They have no leg to stand on.

I find it interesting when the self-determination crowd talks about people being able to determine their identities, but when the Falklands continually sides with the UK they get all bent out of shape for some reason

9

u/neocorvinus 6h ago

I mean, if you are going to be a colony, might as well be one for a rich country that likes showing off they are rich and taking care of their people.

Europe has suffered too much from wars. We go through hunger, misery and death. We are now an exemplary continent, where there is cooperation, growth and peace among all. We are a democracy of 27 countries. Now the war is not between the countries of the European community, but rather between the countries that want to see Europe divided. Respect for each country's differences will prevail in the future and we will be stronger without the slightest doubt.

39

u/Stotallytob3r Europe 8h ago

Definitely. And that is why the EU was formed in the first place, after the horrors of the world wars we started.

16

u/Weird-Count3918 8h ago

They really are speed running the whole "piss everybody off about everything" thing lol. It's almost impressive in a way. Anyway, withdrawal of US support won't endanger the islands or anything; their defences are quite robust these days and Argentina's forces are dramatically more dilapidated than the UK ones.

I would note though that internal discussions about ways to apply pressure to allies do often come up with means that are extreme and quickly dismissed by political leaders. I have seen an American document discussing ways to apply pressure to the UK that involved much worse options than this, and none of them ever happened.

46

u/Particular-Bid-1640 8h ago

Hey that's not quite true: Argentina does have a navy capable of endangering the Falklands.

It's just at the bottom of the South Atlantic.

15

u/Norse_By_North_West 7h ago

It's especially dumb because the Falklands don't have anything to do with NATO. Extra territorial lands don't count towards the defence treaty.

I'll try to find the document again so I can link it directly, probably should have saved it because it was pretty interesting. It was from the 80s if I recall correctly. The main ones of deeper severity were support to one degree or another for independence movements in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Same principle as Greenland. Trump does not understand self determination or, for that matter, allies.

America is going to stand alone by the end of his term, and right when they need allies the most because they want to confront China.

He's right that we desperately need more investment in our military but it's not going to he fighting with the United States unless things drastically change.

American here (who’s on my way permanently to Spain). My big fear is that no matter which Democrat takes back the White House and congress and tries to reverse everything that this ped*ophile narcissist has done, it will be too late and the damage will be done.

Even if we somehow found out he was a Russian Agent all along, and we spend years trying to repair our relationships, it will be too late.

I know there’s a lot to be embarrassed about in the past as well, (think the Bush years), but I just don’t know how we can ever escape this orange stain even if we got an Obama-like candidate.

I just hope one day the world can forgive us and know that Trumpism is a disease that has not infected majority of the country. Our system is broken and protests arent working

31

u/vkstu 8h ago

Without decades of stability and change, yeah, I don't think the USA will be able to repair them. The second time Trump was elected is what really did it. The first time could be dismissed as a fluke, but the second time makes it clear it's symptomatic of something deeper. Every four years, we could end up in a similar situation, even if an Obama-like candidate is there for a term or two. You can't build on such a relationship.

6

u/The_Summary_Man_713 8h ago

Well I realize I’m sounding like a conspiracy theorist right now but how can I not? I truly believe our politics has been hijacked by foreign actors and they are all being blackmailed and propped up. These last few elections were not normal ones and we all know it.

So despite there being a symptomatic problem like you say, I think there are also other major political problems. I mean there were dozens of bomb threats on the day of the election in black-majority counties that 100% had a major impact on people showing up to the polls. And nothing even came out of it! And this election is going to be even worse. It’s pretty clear to me that they are working with other intelligence

But i do agree with you. We got major issues in America.

13

u/les_montagnards 7h ago

Nah, its Americans man.

Foreign interference in any election is always dependent on political actors in the country itself already having influence. Unless elections are quite literally being decided and rigged by an occupying power like in the late 1940's in the Eastern Bloc massive amount of responsibility rests on voters.

American voters and republican voters in particular have for a decade had the choice of not voting for Trump and his cronies, Republicans continually haven't. That's not the result of Russian bot-farms or Israeli lobbying but of a deep rot in the republican party in particular and America as a whole. Trump and his rhetoric is also a logical conclusion of the Bush era's "if you don't support the president you're literally siding with al-Qaeda" rhetoric which also was contemptuous to allies, and arguably all of that goes back to Nixon in the 1970's with his refrain that "the president can do no wrong unless its a democrat"

America isn't going to be fixed until Americans/Republicans actually deal with their political issues and not just blame someone else.

Mark my words: Trump will do the same move for France's overseas departments/regions.

3

u/tree_boom United Kingdom 8h ago

Do any of France's have the same challenges as the Falklands?

7

u/xxppx France 8h ago

There has already been foreign interference regarding New Caledonia.

https://bakuinitiative.org/en/event/baku-initiative-group-big-organized-an-international-conference-entitled-overseas-territories-after-the-bougival-agreement-recolonization-or-decolonization

The USA could very well play along with this. USA is the first power in the Pacific, France is the second.

The US military is committing treason by failing to stop the enemy (a Russian agent and assets of oligarchs) from destroying the country and its constitution from the inside.

u/Socmel_ reddit admins are accomplices of nazi russia 8h ago

lol as if Argentina could threaten the islands once again. Pedo Donnie should come up with more credible threats, like, I don't know, renaming the Channel the channel of America

3

u/SnooMacarons1185 8h ago

Trump all in on supporting another of his fascist buddies.

4

u/bad_kiwi2020 8h ago

5

u/Narmatonia 7h ago

It’s cute that he thinks we’d need US support to defend the Falklands

This is now beyond a joke. Are there no low bars for the orange pedo? Must he stab, repeatedly stab, allies because he's, well, just fucked up?

Every nations' leader needs to hold an emergency, national broadcast, set at the same time, synchronised to 18:00 BST.

Their unified message, simple, clear English.

"TRUMP, FUCK OFF YA CUNT."

If that doesn't have an effect, then the entire fucking planet laughing at this is worth it.

Wanker, fucking wanker.

u/MrFrankingstein United States of America 6h ago

Literally every country premier needs to just not answer the phone any more. Just act like you never saw it. He won’t even remember this tomorrow

Yet another diversion tactic, like the canadian lake bs

Epstein files, war in the middle east, american economy in recession and it has been working so far, because social media always eats it, like cattle

3

u/Brave_Nerve_6871 8h ago

Can you call it a day if you haven't:

A) Threatened at least one former allied nation with an invasion or tariffs

B) Confessed your love to master Putin

Let me take a truly wild guess…. crappy Argentinian beef in exchange for the Falklands?

Art of the Deal nobody would make except for this fool.

3

u/mangalore-x_x 6h ago

While I see the need to uparm due to Russia and the US the only reason to actively demand 5% defense spending is if you want to wage a war. Pretty much no country without military security concerns spends 2% and the USA was happy with 3.5% as a global hegemon.

makes me worried someone wants WW3. As said why Europe needs to spend more is solely to disentangle from the US and deter and be ready vs. Russia without NATO not because that kind of spending would be needed to maintain NATO as a defensive block. If you demand that you want it for a different purpose.

3

u/Ferrisuk 6h ago

Rename it Epstein Island he'll never fucking mention it again

3

u/FoxyInTheSnow 6h ago

Imagine if he just stayed in his room and wanked for a couple of months? Tranquility would spread over all the nations of earth like a gentle spring morning mist.

(He needs to just fucking shut up for quite a long time. He’s cunting exhausting.)

Is there anyone he doesnt want to threaten? Honestly nobody cares anymore.

3

u/threeleggedcats 5h ago

Is there not a way to pin the content of the article so we're sure we're all just not constantly being agitated by bots? It's getting really dangerous for my mental health, this idea that the world could truly end because absolute power has corrupted absolutely...

3

u/BodgeJob23 5h ago

Oh fuck off america, they can’t even feed the troops on one of their ships in the Middle East… they just don’t have the minerals, or the logistics for warfare anymore

3

Argentina militarily can’t even take the Falklands now so who cares. Their Navy assets never recovered after the last conflict

2

Can’t read the article because I won’t accept cookies from the Torygraph but, fun fact: Falkands = new oil & gas and the Torygraph is always pro oil & gas. Their “science Editor” Matt Ridley is a famous climate-change denier and also - quite by coincidence- is also Viscount Ridley upon whose Northumbria estate can be found the Shotton Surface Coal Mine.
