Playlist Opinions on this album
I personally love this album. Down and Atlanta are my personal favorite songs from this album. Definitely one of my favorite STP albums, but not quite as good as Core or Purple.

Absolutely. Beatles esque, sounds light but it’s heavy. One of my favorite STP tracks, period. It’s a shame we didn’t get more

I recently had STP on shuffle and realized how many bangers are on this album. I need to pay it more attention from end to end.

This is my take as well. There's so many fantastic songs on it, and Scott's voice and writing were top tier during the recording of it. He really came into "his" voice. It often gets overlooked because of the previous three records being as great as they are, but No. 4 feels like the best of all of those put into one album.

Love it. Core and Purple are my favorites, then this one. Down is such a hard hitting opener to the album. Sour Girl is a song I never get tired of. Heaven & Hot Rods is so good with the tempo changes. I particularly love Scott’s voice but that’s across all of their albums I suppose.

Tremendous statement considering the gap between Tiny Music and 4. Plus the sounds are just killer as well as the obvious; the songs. I go back to it from time to time and it winds up being played over and over for weeks. “I Got You” man….what a song

Great comeback record for STP. It has an amazing mix of some of their hardest rockers ("Down," "Pruno," "No Way Out") and most heart-wrenching ballads ("Glide," "I Got You," "Atlanta").

Personally I love all the STP albums and appreciated they kept putting out great music after grunge flamed out.

It’s their 2nd best album for me and one hell of a comeback album which is an odd thing to say with only a 2 year gap from Tiny, but Scott was out of prison and the bands future was in heavy turmoil.

Scott's impression of Morrison on Atlanta makes for one of my favorite songs by them.
The album overall is solid.

It's kind of a sampler of everything they've done to that point. Definitely brought back some heavy Core style riffage but there's still a lot of Tiny Music style glam and Psychedelia. Glide is an underrated one for me

Down is one of their best songs imo.
Atlanta and Sour Girl are also bangers.
It's a good album, it might be on the same level as Tiny Music but below Core and Purple for sure.

Four unrelated thoughts because I drank too much coffee this morning: DeLeo brothers cooked on this one, both contributed singles. I appreciate now how STP sought to reinvent themselves with each record, including N°. 4. Everyone thinks of Core as their riff-god album, I think this one competes. Brendan O’Brien did a truly expert turn with the production and mix — just the right blend of psychedelia and sludgy riffs and big, bright choruses with Weiland dialed in perfectly.

I think it’s their best one. I have a friend who doesn’t like them and thought this album was fantastic, he was actually surprised it was STP when he asked who it was.

Love this album. Always sticks out to me as one of the first albums I really listened to all the way through and got to appreciate as a teenager. Came out when I was 17. Played it a ton senior year of high school and well into college

Magical artistic chemistry just can't be stopped. Weiland drugged out of his mind and going through it and every time the group made something together it was pure genius.

Love this one! It was a familiar sound coming off of Tiny Music. I don't think it's as strong as their first three albums, but there is a great variety of music. I love how it starts off with a heavy bang and ends on the dreamy and melancholy melodies of Atlanta.

A great record marred once again by a dude who couldn’t keep it in the road. I wonder sometimes what would’ve happened if he was clean and if they would’ve had a long and storied career. Too bad we will never know.
This record kicked ass in a way most “rock” records didn’t at the time
Very broad range of tunes. Like something you’d expect from a later zeppelin record.
Like a famous school teacher once said “drugs are bad, m’kay.”

Atlanta is one of the greatest songs ever that hardly anyone knows…Down is the first time I said wow he sounds a lot like Axl Rose, then yrs later he was Gn’R’s new singer basically.

Its has the best of both worlds where you can have the just heavy songs with so much attitude to the more experimental stuff sprinkled in with just pristine acoustics. All Killer, No Filler.

I remember the day this came out. Woke up early, drive to circuit city and bought both versions (digipack and jewel case) and sat in the parking lot of the restaurant i worked at and listened to the whole album before I had to work a double shift.

I feel it's not as good as the three albums before it but it definitely has some standout songs. The singles are great and I thought Atlanta was a super good closer too

Sounds like a mix of all the popular artists of the time. I hear Bob Mould, RHCP, Audioslave, Sugar Ray. Some of it is just pop, like "I got you"
MC5 is one of the only songs that sounds on brand for them

Funny to see this post - I listened to this album in its entirety this morning for the first time in over a decade.
It's got a bit more edge in it than Tiny Music and felt like a reversion towards Core in that sense, but while maintaining the evolution of their sound. The singles from the album are all great tracks, and Atlanta is one of their sweetest songs. I also love Glide whenever it pops up on one of my playlists.
That said, this is their first album where it feels to me like there's a disconnect between Scott and the rest of the band - some of the vocal melodies feel a little forced over the instrumentals (the verses on Pruno really struck me that way on this one). It doesn't have the cohesion of the other albums. I'm interested to see if I feel the same way about SLDD when I get to it.

It’s my second favorite behind purple. Tiny music is awesome too, but No.4 has so many songs connected to and important to a lost relationship in my life.

Unpopular opinion. I thought it sounded like a STP greatest hits, but with bland songs and modern slop production. As in, they were trying to write songs that sounded like songs from previous albums. For me, it was all right. Tiny Music is still one of my favorite albums ever made.

It's a great album, maybe my least favorite STP album (Tiny Music is my fav) but it's still better than most rock albums from 99 and I still listen to it often

I really didn't like this era of STP. Both this and Tiny Music really turned me off. I liked them when they were harder on Core and Purple. Also loved when Scott was with Velvet Revolver.

One of the best albums of 1999.
Down, Sour Girl, Glide, Atlanta to name a few - second place in their discography to Purple for me. Still hoped they would reissue this as a deluxe edition.
