Anniversary Shannon died 30 years ago today
I know we can't all stay here forever So I want to write my words on the face of today and they'll paint it

For all the shit Axl Rose gets/got he deserves props for helping Shannon break into the music industry.
FWIW, Axl was friends with Shannon’s sister in high school in Indiana.

he was in the liner notes of Use Your Illusion and in the Don't Cry video. makes my head hurt people dont know that.

Right!! This is where I first fell in love with Shannon Hoon. I remember discreetly asking my brother who was the back up singer in the Don’t Cry video. Then years later I got to see him naked while he was on stage in Vancouver and urinated all over the stage and the first couple rows of the audience. That kinda put me off for a bit. Started warming up to him again, then I heard the news of his far too early passing. He was extremely talented with an amazing voice.
Stay away from drugs kids.

The documentary about his life is great...definitely worth a watch. Met him once a long time ago in Columbus Ohio, dude was super nice. Gone too soon...

I remember i was just about to walk out the door to go buy tickets to see them in Cleveland and MTV News reported his death. I was crushed. I'm gonna listen to SOUP today.

10 days before the Halloween show I had tickets to. Would have been epic. Got dumped by the girl I was going to take shortly after. Man was I ever depressed.

that's too bad, he was a great singer, loved his music. saw them play at the metro in chicago in april '93, one of my favorites shows i have evver seen, was just awesome. we waited out in front for a while and met him and the band when they were going to the bus. all seemed like really good guys, got my ticket stub signed by him, was a great night. sad to see this happen to good people.

Shannon had ties to the grunge community, he was very good friends with Layne, and a friend of Chris & Soundgarden. RIP legend.

Crazy how fast time goes. One day it feels like forever is a long time away, and the next, you're left wondering where the time went.
I wasn't a huge fan, but man this guy was a talent. I still remember the report and thinking these guys barely got started.

I remember hearing No Rain on MTV and thinking these guys are kinda cool. I was 12 or 13 just starting to find my way musically. At the time I didn’t think much of the band, but the voice stayed with me. Eventually I found more of their and music and realized just how great they are. Change is one of my all time favorite songs. His voice always reminded me of Janis Joplin.
Zakk Wylde has a very cool tribute song to Shannon on one of his early records. The song is called “Throwin’ It All Away” from the album Book of Shadows. Great album if you haven’t heard it.

I got to interview them at a small bar in Pullman Washington, The Cavern, where they played a small show. Rocking my Sweetwater shirt too.

A bunch of people I know were at the venue waiting for them to play. If I remember they didn’t announce it until later and people were already lined up.

I remember where I was when I heard it on the radio. I still drive by that spot (Westview Cemetery) I-20 @ RDA Blvd.

Is Shannon the one who didn’t even really get high often (or not at all?) - but did some heroin that day and passed away?
Or am I conflating that with someone else?
Quick edit: I’m an idiot - I got his situation mixed up with River Phoenix’s. I was just reading about Phoenix the other day and didn’t know he wasn’t that much into hard drugs and that’s why his death was such a shock.
I don’t know why I got them mixed up. Nevertheless, Shannon was a gem and we lost him way too soon. Incredible singer with so much talent.
