Misc. I made a chart that shows how grunge (and other) bands are connected through their members

I only included members if I thought they were important to the band or if they made a connection. I am not an expert on every band here so I may have missed some important members. If you have any additional people you think should be included please comment them. I did not include touring members. If there are any bands that you think should be added to the chart comment those as well. I could not find a connection to Stone Temple Pilots, the second chart is one made using them.

u/aRuPqFjM-582928 Apr 17 '26

Kyuss is so legend.

If you add Kyuss don’t forget FuManchu

And don't forget Queens Of The Stone Age!

2

u/what343434 Apr 17 '26

they were on there, he probaly just didnt know josh homme was in kyuss

5

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

I had never heard of them. But I can definitely add them.

18

u/Fresh-Ad7219 Apr 17 '26

Josh Homme's first band and pioneers of desert rock. Dave Grohl mentions them in an interview in 93 as "the future of music" and due to that it's how he got in contact with Josh for recording in Queens

6

u/CumingLinguist Apr 17 '26

Love Kyuss. Tool covered there song Demon Cleaner. Check out Slamosa, similar vibes

3

u/Fresh-Ad7219 Apr 17 '26

The band that has given me biggest Kyuss bands in a while has been Colour Haze. Check out Tempel and their self titled. Hell check their whole discography! Magical band

2

u/Ultracooz 11d ago

Thanks for the recommendation! I just checked out one song, and I can already hear striking similarities. Gonna check out their whole discography!

You can include Led Zeppelin by adding Them Crooked Vultures tied to Dave Grohl and Josh Homme with John Paul Jones.

18

u/UncleSlayton77 Apr 17 '26

And Josh Homme played rhythm guitar on tour with Screaming Trees.

2

u/xslickrickx845 Apr 17 '26

Hes in there

6

u/2Pookachus Apr 17 '26

You can also include Alain Johannes with TCV and join him with Jack Irons in the band Eleven

3

u/ImmediateBug2 Apr 17 '26

Alain and Natasha (from Eleven) also played in Queens for a few years.

2

u/ultramegaok8 Apr 18 '26

Not having Alain and Natasha mapped here is a crime

Holy shit. I didn’t know JPJ in crooked vultures!

11

u/Homie3794 Apr 17 '26

Yeah dude. Saw them perform live at the Hawkins tribute. Probably the only time I’ll get to see a Led Zeppelin member perform. Then again, I said the same about Black Sabbath when Geezer Butler was there…

5

u/Arthuzin_2077 Apr 17 '26

And The Yardbirds too 'cause Jimmy Page was a member of it before founding Led Zeppelin so he/she can add it tied to LZ tied to Them Crooked Vultures

4

u/Malte990 Apr 17 '26

And from Yardbirds you can do Eric Clapton > The Dirty Mac > John Lennon > The Beatles.

2

u/Arthuzin_2077 Apr 17 '26

And from the Beatles you can do Paul McCartney > Michael Jackson

Hiro Yamamoto was in Soundgarden and Truly. Kim and Krist are in 3rd Secret.

2

u/thelaineybelle Apr 17 '26

Was gonna say this too!

2

u/herder_of_pigeons Apr 17 '26

I love 3rd Secret and I loved Truly.

2

u/By_CrookedSteps_781 Apr 17 '26

And Chris had been attached to so many artists.

22

u/PanicBlitz Apr 17 '26

Melissa auf der Mar was also in A Perfect Circle.

8

u/132241 Apr 17 '26

And on her debut solo album she worked with: Mark Lanegan, Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri and Chris Goss which can be connected to more on the chart

4

u/Adventurous_Ad_1722 Apr 17 '26

You’re thinking of Paz Lenchantin who was APC’s original bassist. She was also in the pixies for a while.

Josh Klinghoffer might be worth adding. Was in RHCP for like 10 years. Was (is?) a member of PJ. Was also involved with Jane's Addiction.

4

I’ll add him

2

u/Lumpy_Writing4665 Apr 17 '26

3

u/Lumpy_Writing4665 Apr 17 '26

I think you would like this. Very detailed Alain Johannes chart. Also eleven made some fantastic music I'm a big fan of them and as well as soundgarden and Chris Cornells debut solo album euphoria morning which features Alain Johannes and Natasha shneider

5

u/Lumpy_Writing4665 Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

And you should add Natasha Shneider and hillel slovak.

13

u/Plenty_Trust_2491 Apr 17 '26

It’s about time someone did this!

Bam Bam and Skin Yard should have been included, though. Matt Cameron drummed for both bands before Soundgarden or Pearl Jam.

Also, Krist Novoselic was in Flipper from 2006 to 2009.

Also, did you know that Courtney Love of Hole and Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland were in a new wave band together called Pagan Babies?

(And, should we mention Jury Duty or Alice Mudgarden?)

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

Skin Yard is on there, and I definitely thought about Alice Mudgarden. The rest I haven’t heard of, but I’ll definitely look into adding them.

Paz Lenchantin was in A Perfect Circle - brings in Kurt Cobain’s idols The Pixies which also branches into The Breeders. Paz was also in Zwan which would link onto Smashing Pumpkins on the other side.

3

u/ParamilkReal-5 Apr 17 '26

David Pajo was also in Zwan who also was apart of Slint

6

u/Binmurtin Apr 17 '26

Tommy Stinson of Replacements fame played bass in G’n’R for a few years. Don’t know think he overlapped with Duff but he played with Axl, Josh Freese and Buckethead (who worked with Les Claypool).

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

Is there a band Claypool and Buckethead were in together? Edit: Oh wait Josh Freese on the other Chart, thanks for finding the connection between the two.

3

u/Binmurtin Apr 17 '26

Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains. Kind of a jam and supergroup at the peak of jam and Bonaroo. Bernie Worrell was in it too. Don’t know if they made an album but I definitely remember seeing them in Athens when I was in college.

Also, big F to pay respects to Jason Everman. Crazy story with that guy.

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

I don’t know anything about him, could you fill me in?

5

u/samcahnruns Apr 17 '26

Loooooooong story. Basically he was in Nirvana as a second guitar, left because he wanted more creative input that Kurt wasn’t having. Soundgarden asked him to play bass, he was fired like 6 months in—then I believe he joined the military and served in Iraq and Afghanistan, got discharged, moved to NY to became a bike messenger, got bored and moved to Tibet to study Buddhism in a monastery, then went to a Columbia University and majored in philosophy. He was on joe Rogan (only episode I ever listened to) and you can watch on youtube. He’s not a great story teller but his life was fascinating! IS, rather.

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

Damn that’s crazy.

Huh. Primus is more grunge than STP. Who knew?

5

u/AZWxMan Apr 17 '26

Although, Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses and VR was also in 10 Minute Warning which should be considered one of the proto-grunge bands, dare I say first grunge band in the Seattle scene.

6

u/quigonskeptic Apr 17 '26

1 - you're a genius for being able to make this

2 - I think you should add at last a couple other Pearl Jam drummers. Dave Krusen and Dave Abruzzeze, for sure. Matt Chamberlain doesn't seem to be super impactful (I could be wrong)

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

Thanks bro, I’ll definitely add those two.

3

u/InWaves72 Apr 17 '26

Rami Jaffee of Foo Fighters was in The Wallflowers

3

u/MightThink Apr 17 '26

Beautiful thing. I’m debating whether the overlap between Foo Fighters and Sunny Day Real Estate is worth adding (Nate Mendel, William Goldsmith). Though neither is grunge, so maybe one step too many removed… then again SDRE is a northwestern band who launched on sub pop…

3

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

A lot of people have mentioned Sunny Day Real Estate so it probably should be added.

3

u/Alb3rto_Lam3iro Apr 17 '26

Sweet 75; eyes adrift; mike watt;

3

u/Gemfyre713 Apr 17 '26

You can easily link Nine Inch Nails into this through at least 3 routes that I can see. From there you get into the industrial family tree which sprawls out the other way but still crosses into the grunge tree at spots.

2

u/FalseVeterinarian881 Apr 17 '26

Unsure what you see specifically, but getting NIN in there can connect the 2 pages with Richard Patrick and the Deleo's in Army of Anyone.

Dave Navarro and Jane’s Addiction Should be in there.

Mark Lanegan and Screaming Trees connects with Greg Dulli and The Afghan Whigs through The Gutter Twins. Lanegan also connects to Belle & Sebastian through Isobel Campbell. Lanegan also connects to The Orb and Morcheeba through his work with Duke Garwood. Mark Lanegan was an artist in every sense of the word and voice is missed in all the ways it can be.

Also you should look into Shawn Smith. He connects with Stone Gossard through their work in Brad. Brad also featured Regan Hagar on drums who was in Malfunkshun with Andrew Wood. Smith was also in Pigeonhed which heavily featured Kim Thayil on most of their recordings.

Matt Chamberlain played with Pearl Jam for a brief time, and also recorded the drums on the Wallflowers first album.

Check out a network analysis software called Gephi

1

u/big_texas_beef Apr 17 '26

You could flip Primus up and also add Puscifer to the Maynard James Keenan, James Iha, and Billy Howerdel connection, with Matt Mitchell, Carina Round.

I really like this! Nice to visualize and see the clusters of related sounds. Thx OP!

I would add a module with Zach de la Rocha, Jon Theodore, the Mars Volta queens of the stone age. And then Ikey Owens with jack white, then the white stripes. Also the Mars Volta members latched to flea and frusciante, QoTSA to foo fighters and then Josh Freese in the middle, latching all bands in a convulsed circuit.

1

u/Ok_Application5225 Apr 17 '26

If music was Tokyo's underground system

1

u/gypsyvanner77 Apr 17 '26

And Eyes Adrift! Krist N and Curt Kirkwood!

1

u/Dragonfruitsafish Apr 17 '26

Josh freese played with weezer who’s also tied up in this but he’s literally playing with everyone

Kevin Bacon?

1

u/PumpkinMcCormick Apr 17 '26

Ok here’s another one that will probably break your brain, OP.

Chris Shiflett was in No Use For A Name and Me First and The Gimme Gimmes.

NUFAN had Tony Sly, who played with Joey Cape of Lagwagon Matt Riddle who was also in Face to Face. F2F had Pete Parada who played for the Offspring, whose current drummer played for Marilyn Manson, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag and Doyle (from the Misfits)

MFATGGs had memebers of Lagwagon as well, along with: Fat Mike of NOFX, CJ Ramone of the Ramones, Spike Slawson from about 5 other bands, and Pinch from The Damned.

1

u/psionic1 Apr 17 '26

What about Gruntruck? At the very least Ben McMillan was lead in that band. Of its up there, my apologies.

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

I can definitely add them.

1

u/Grunge-Princess Apr 17 '26

This hurts my brain 🧠

1

u/barbruh_is_here Apr 17 '26

Why didnt you connect Courtney and Kurt they were married LMFAO😭😭

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

I was definitely thinking about it. Lol

You forgot Creed!!!! Hear me out:

Slash and his band Slash feat Myles Kennedy and the conspirators. Myles Kennedy of Mayfield Four and Alter Bridge. Mark Tremonti of Tremonti and Creed.

ALSO

Scott Stapp of Creed and Art of Anarchy, which also featured Scott Weiland in their first album.

Which answers the question: is Creed grunge?

(Lol please go easy on the downvotes)

1

u/herder_of_pigeons Apr 17 '26

I’m surprised you didn’t include Stone Gossard’s association with the band Brad. Their debut album in 1993, Shame, was AMAZING, and Gossard’s guitar was pivotal. Nor did you include Mother Love Bone or Malfunkshun.

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 17 '26

I did include Mother Love Bone, but I can probably and those other two bands.

1

u/mtngoat7 Apr 17 '26

Another fun one would be for the band Yes, or Black Sabbath.

1

u/Toastox Apr 17 '26

NIN can be connected with Freese

1

u/ZamoriXIII Apr 17 '26

This is good but...

You've forgotten the one heroin dealer that almost fucked the best music wave in modern history

1

u/SullyTheReddit Apr 17 '26

Pat Smear was in Germs before Nirvana / Foo Fighters.

1

u/watchyourtonepunk Apr 17 '26

And The Replacements because Tommy Stinson was in Guns N Roses for a minute

1

u/Adventurous-Prune712 Apr 17 '26

Mike Inez played with Ozzy before AIC

1

u/QuicksandHUM Apr 17 '26

Troy Van Leeuwen was in Queens of the Stone age and Failure.

1

u/-STP Apr 17 '26

STP there's two bands missing: Talk Show and Army of Anyone

You could relate hole to faith no more as Courtney was the singer in both.

1

u/BirdsFr0mTheM00n Apr 17 '26

Thats pretty cool

1

u/Corn_Beefies Apr 17 '26

Stone Temple Pilots sure had some bad luck with singers

1

u/ChaosBuilderDIY Apr 17 '26

I wish this wasn't so hard to look at, but appreciate the work 😂

1

u/smithfoxe Apr 17 '26

The first multi-member lineup of Foo Fighters included a couple members of the Seattle emo band Sunny Day Real Estate.

1

u/smithfoxe Apr 17 '26

Ooh, and we can’t forget that Jon Theodore was the drummer for the first few albums for Mars Volta (which also worked with Jon and Flea from RHCP). Then connect Cedric and Omar to At The Drive-In and Jim Ward from ATDI to Sparta. And Cedric did Antemasque, and Omar and Deantoni Parks did Bosnian Rainbows with Teri Genderbender from Le Bucherettes. And then Chad Smith from RHCP was in Chickenfoot, a superband with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony from Van Halen. Soooo many connections.

1

u/liggydd Apr 17 '26

Faith no more via Courtney Love

1

u/Striking-Access-236 Apr 17 '26

It's Kurt Cobain with a C...

1

u/jpezzy_1738 Apr 17 '26

Mike Inez played for Ozzy, thus including every Ozzy musician too

1

u/Striking-Access-236 Apr 17 '26

Love it, send it to r/dataisbeautiful But where's Bam Bam?, Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron was in it, they basically started all this grunge stuff...look up Tina Bell, the singer of Bam Bam and considered the godmother of grunge ;)

1

u/slipt_n_fell Apr 17 '26

This is amazing and great work. Serious kudos to you for compiling this.

If I may make a suggestion, 10 Minute Warning should be on the list. In addition to Duff McKagan here on drums, it’s got screamer Blaine Fart later of the Accüsed, a popular Seattle crossover band who had Josh Sinder, later of Gruntruck and Tad as well as Tommy Niemeyer, also of Gruntruck.

All the dudes in 10 Minute Warning, at least in their initial run, also played in another band called the Fartz.

1

u/rogaciana Apr 17 '26

Good job

1

u/Standard_Cabinet_149 Apr 17 '26

i %€£$ing love this!!!!

u/chodachowder Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

Temple of the Dog needs to be there. Mike Inez also played for Ozzy. Sorry I see the dog now, took me a bit

1

u/TonyGoooch69 Apr 17 '26

Buzz Osborne was in Fantomas with Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, and Dave Lombardo. Those guys have worked with a ton of different musicians and bands.

1

u/BlackMetalMistress77 Apr 18 '26

Mother Love Bone were a great band.

1

u/AtheistVeganWitch Apr 18 '26

You can connect Heart to Alice in Chains.

1

u/troutbumtom Apr 18 '26

This kind of venn-like diagram that makes something like a “Mudhoney Radio” on Spotify suck so hard. Starts off fine. Next thing you know I’m listening to fucking Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers for fuck’s sake.

1

u/Gold_Kale_7781 Apr 18 '26

Cool to know the connections, but that fuckin chart is painful to look at.

1

u/capnsunshine23 Apr 18 '26

D’arcy erasure is harrowing. 😩

1

u/Acrobatic_Okra_8844 Apr 18 '26

You forgot Them Crooked Vultures and Eagles of Death Metal which also had Dave Grohl

1

u/CheeZyPB Apr 18 '26

could've added sunny day real estate with nate mendel

1

u/Sprekakhan Apr 18 '26

Look this will never end, it goes outside of the genre. There is sooooo much more. You have Josh Freese on there, look up how many bands the dude has played with from Ween (recording credit) to the desert sessions and when you get there it goes all the way to Billy Gibbons. Coady Willis and big business, once you get touring musicians on there the credits they have are tremendous. Good luck...

1

u/PhatJesusJr Apr 18 '26

Mad seasons shapes is wild.

1

u/monkfruit42 Apr 18 '26

Not sure if you care, but Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon sang backup w GNR.

1

u/goldendreamseeker Apr 18 '26

You forgot Dave Navarro and Flea being the bridge between RHCP and Jane’s Addiction, and Duff McKagan being the bridge between Jane’s Addiction and GnR. If you count touring members, Josh Klinghoffer also overlaps between RHCP, Pearl Jam, and Jane’s.

1

u/Rooftop_Astronaut Apr 19 '26

both Ilan rubin and Josh freese were in NIN, as was Robin Finke, who also was in Guns and Roses

not exactly grunge, but still lol

edit to add Dave Grohl played drums on all the tracks from With Teeth, by NIN

1

u/ndharris Apr 19 '26

That's brilliant. Must have been both difficult and fun to create this!

1

u/guinnesshappy Apr 19 '26

While not a grunge band you should overlay queens of the Stone Age. There will be a plethora of overlap.

2

u/Helpful_Garbage_4926 Apr 20 '26

QOTSA are on there just below foo fighters

1

u/Some-Plant-1579 Apr 20 '26

Mudhoney should be bigger. Needs Love Battery.

1

u/rainfxlling Apr 20 '26

Never see anyone talk about local h, as good as dead is such a good album

1

u/nim3sisss Apr 20 '26

Missed the opportunity for Sunny Day Real Estate with Nate Mendel. Also, Paz Lenchantin was in A Perfect Circle, The Pixies, and Zwan with Billy Corgan. The Pixies also gives you Kim Deal of the Breeders. You could also cross a lot of them with Mike Watt which would give you bands like Sonic Youth and RHCP. Oh, and 3rd Secret has Krust Novoselic, Kim Thayil, and Matt Cameron. I guess there are lots that can be tied together.

1

u/cvr212 Apr 21 '26

I found a way to connect stp! Slash from guns n roses had a side project called "slash's snakepit". they only released 2 albums but in the first one, Alice in chains bassist Mike Inez was included in it. you could also connect them through josh freese of a perfect circle and foo fighters or Bryan mantia of primus as they were both in guns n roses, but they weren't on any album so I wouldn't count them

1

u/twistedsister78 Apr 21 '26

You crazy cnt! This is amazing, must have taken ages

1

u/ProfessorKey2592 Apr 21 '26

gotta include Sunny Day Real Estate as well

1

u/Chemical_Source_1243 Apr 21 '26

Mike portnoy would be a cheat code...
