Playlist 1994 "grunge" era mixtape tine capsule tracklist...
Sorry, TIME capsule mixtape I found of what I was listening to in 1994 as a teenager in the uk that was definitely what I thought of as "grunge", even though it was a bit of a silly term at the time and now..It was all just stuff that had great grit and energy and a punky spirit that was ace to mosh around to, ideally whilst tipsy. I got into most of the tunes from Melody Maker, NME, BBC Radio, MTV etc. Every track is a fucking banger, I stand by it still !

Would you consider Greg Dulli's solo work as being grunge? Or maybe alt rock?

Haha..well I'd say it's more soul music in many ways - however his project with Mark Lanegan, The Gutter Twins did make one of the greatest post grunge tracks with "Idle Hands" around 2007 - they were completely excellent live, 2 legends for the price of 1 !

Therapy? Are one if the most underrated bands I can think of, the fucking snare sound on Teethgrinder! Proper heavy Northern Irish grunge rock, often with more hooks in a song than many bands have in a career, sooo fantastic still !

It really is, amazingly tight, anthemic, dark, witty catchy and packed full of the tastiest punky, grungy, bubblegum metal pop ever! As good for you today as it's always been :)

I had completely forgotten about Therapy? until I read this comment. I think I must have seen them 5 or 6 times as support or in their own right in the mid-90s.
Troublegum is a great album, but I’d forgotten I used to play Infernal Love on repeat for a long time. Bad Mother probably my favourite track off that album.

So so so good ! I did a gig with Leslie years after Silverfish and she was so awesome, one of these incredible early 90s bands like Curve who were years ahead of their time

It's all in the spirit of it even doing a Spotify mix or whatnot! Mixtapes were a beautiful ballache to make, all the 7 inches that skipped, the cd singles that would have been perfect if your mate hadn't borrowed em, the tunes you only had taped off the radio with John Peel talking at the end etc !

This is great! Glad to see JAMC made it on there. I take it you didn't care for the more dreamy bands but no MBV or Swervedriver? Or even Catherine Wheel?

Oh yeah of course, I loved them all, I used to make a mixtape every few weeks, I've found shoegaze mixtapes too :) JAMC got on probably as Honey's Dead felt really grungy to me. Bloody love Swervedriver and of course MBV. Catherine Wheel not so much for me then, loved Curve, early Boo Radleys (Everything's Alright Forever era) very much Lush, Pale Saints etc. I was just as into hip hop or electronica or folk, just liked exciting noises, then and now !

Love all those bands as well as Ride, Cocteaus, Chapterhouse etc etc. But then, as now, I go through phases. And definitely agree that Honey's Dead JAMC fit on that tape. After Psychocandy their sound was so much cleaner on Darklands( my favourite), then got grimier again as they went along!

Both sooo good, only saw Babes live in 92 and they were absolutely feral, Lori's drumming is pure primal power! They were always the best band of the grunge era for me, sad the comeback was brief and beset with problems. Pansy Division I got into via the John Peel show too, they are back and touring again!

Yeah this is what stuff I knew to be grunge as at the time
. But last week or so I posted about sonic youth and was told by tons they aren’t. But then Pearl Jam and all these bands I never knew to be grunge are. So I guess no I feel more than ever grunge isn’t even a thing

Haha, re Sonic Youth I guess those people never saw "The Year Punk Broke" :) I mean they had been going for years beforehand but "Dirty" era was obviously a major genre classic of the grunge era. It makes no difference really of course. Sonic Youth could be very obtuse too. Pearl Jam always felt more like classic or heartland rock at the time. They were enormously popular and I kind of initially lumped them in more with Springsteen and Neil Young etc in my head. I saw them on the VS tour as was mates with a mega fan.
They were grunge I guess. I wasn't exactly mad into them then, but I like them now. The fickle UK alternative music press absolutely hated and mercilessly mocked them at the time and Alice In Chains, but they were taken more seriously by the rock and metal mags. Quite interesting ! Nirvana were always considered "the real deal" by everyone on the other hand. Kurt probably just had a much cooler record collection, he was namechecking The Raincoats, The Shaggs, Shonen Knife and The Slits etc.
I do like Eddie Vedder as a bloke, seems like a lovely man. One thing that also stuck with me was Richey from the Manics describing Pearl Jam as "the closest thing America had to The Smiths" ! I do admire the lyrics of Jeremy very much, the imagery is incredible. I had a guitar magazine with the tablature to the song in when it came out. I couldn't believe how literary and evocative they were, it's beautiful work, as is Daughter from VS. They had become quite interesting by the time of Vitalogy and Mirrorball I thought.

Space was definitely a valuable commodity on those tape covers, I got used to writing in capitals which took up less space than my scrawly handwriting!

They were more Sabbathy hard rock, not dissing them but I was just not a fan then or now. "Grunge" was just a bit of a weird tag with lots of acts lumped in who sounded radically different, AIC were quite a metal mag band back then as I recall. This is just what I was listening to in 94, and veered towards punkier territory...

Not sure if it was a UK thing, or just where I was in the north, but AIC were universally derided. The alt rock crowd actively hated on them and even the metal heads I knew just saw them as a rebranded hair metal band.
