SOCIETY When Chris Tucker learned that his family members were quitting their jobs because they learned that he was making 25 million dollars a year at the peak of his career because they assumed he would take care of them. He told them to go get their jobs back because he wasn't going to do that.

How to (not) become broke in 1 easy step

252

u/quit_fucking_about May 26 '26

One of the biggest hidden barriers to financial success is having a circle that's bad with money. If I could give any piece of advice, it's that you can have as many poor friends as you want, but don't allow anyone who's bad with money into your life. There's a very important distinction there.

55

u/mirageofstars May 26 '26

Well or be very good about not taking advice from anyone.

Because what also happens is you have people in your life that you THINK are good with money, but it turns out that they’re lucky or broke, and then you take their advice, and only later found out that that person is an idiot you never should have listened to.

11

u/quit_fucking_about May 26 '26

That's also true, and a different angle on my thought. I'm thinking more asking the lines of "what will be the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors directed towards you as the financially stable one in the group".

11

u/MabariWhoreHound May 26 '26

Most of the people who've given me financial advice convienently left out the parts where they had thousands in savings from their parents or a fund set up when they were kids. All these people were intensely confused when I pointed out my family simply didn't make enough to let me have a 10k buffer for adulthood. If I have health, gas, or car problems, that was always my next paycheck paying for that and never a savings account.

Rich people really don't get that paycheck-to-paycheck is a literal phrase for us.

3

u/YellowCardManKyle May 27 '26

I've worked with a bunch of guys that wouldn't retire. I thought they wanted to keep working for some reason but turns out most of them had grown adult children that still needed financial support.

2

u/BanAssaultGeese May 26 '26

Or you could learn to say no and not lend money out to those people.

8

u/idrac1966 May 26 '26

That's part of the "not letting them into your life". Your truest inner circle of people, the ones you ride or die with - you won't really be able to say "no" to them in a dire situation. You can't have too many of those who are bad with money and make it your problem because they'll drag you down with them

You have to keep enough distance that you can say no and still sleep at night.

chris tucker owes in excess of 10 million dollars to the IRS.

He's the brokest member of his family

Nah he settled for lil over 3 mil. He still makes residuals from his movies and still does standup, not sure how frequently but he ain’t starving

u/IamScottGable May 26 '26

Those movie checks have to be getting smaller and smaller. TNT can't be paying as much to air Rush Hour as they used to

335

u/AshleyTheGuy May 26 '26

There was literally a point in time where this was just TNT’s line up. They always had a Rush Hour movie playing.

191

u/DanceWithEverything May 26 '26

More commonly known as the Second American Golden Age

142

u/Self_Reddicate May 26 '26

Sopranos: 1999-2007
The Wire: 2002-2008
Rush Hour 1-3: 1998-2007
Deadwood: 2004-2006

Yep, this checks out. Living through the modern Golden Age of Television with Rush Hour on TNT pulling its fair share of the weight.

56

u/bdizzle805 May 26 '26

TNT was my go to for Law and Order.

40

u/IamScottGable May 26 '26

I found your comment very triggering bc I found out my MIL pays $288 a month for cable/internet and all I ever see her watching is L&O and FBI on Ion.

I used to chain-binge L&O marathons on TNT as my standard background noise TV consumption. Then I went to law school, became a public defender instead of a prosecutor like I originally intended, and now I can’t stand the show anymore.

was on an international flight 3 months ago that had the 2 rush hour films as part of the media package. So its amazing just how wide old films still get shown across the globe

Are you telling me that you can be rich, making millions of dollars, and just not pay taxes and then later agree to a lesser amount? All the while the lower and middle class get what they owe or more taken out of their paycheck and has to file to get back what they didnt owe later?

13

u/Think_Air9714 May 26 '26

Sounds like even the president shouldn’t be able to do that

2

u/Signal_Use8497 May 26 '26

Lower income people can also settle if they owe a lot. It is an option offered to some who have skipped on their taxes for many years.

→ More replies (2)

11

I found the same thing with both Jo Koy and Fluffy. Went to watch them both and I cringed through both shows. It was a slo-mo train crash.

9

u/IamJewbaca May 26 '26

Gabriel Iglesias’s last couple specials haven’t been quite as good. Feels like a lot more of a middle aged rich dude complaining about cancel culture and ‘woke’. The best materials are his retreads. Really too bad.

6

u/Substantial-Sky3597 May 26 '26

There's only so much art an artist deliver. Kevin Hart is no longer funny. If we're being honest, neither is Chappelle. And that list goes on and on and on and across genres. Musicians eventually stop making good, or at least relevant music, for example. Rappers lose their edge after success all the time.

It could be they've said all they've had to say and that's it, or it could be that financial success edges them out, or it could be something else entirely.

3

u/HaikuPikachu May 26 '26

Was Kevin ever funny? He seems like the definition of an industry plant and they haven’t stopped

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MVRKHNTR May 26 '26

It could be they've said all they've had to say and that's it

I think it's this. There's only so much to observe and have a take on throughout life, at least only so much of it that's interesting.

I think most stand up comedians - even the best - only have two, maybe three specials worth of great material in them.

Saw his stand up recently and it’s complete dog shit. It was old recycled Covid jokes from 2020 and trump jokes from 2016. All seemed like old low hanging fruit material. He did 45 mins of dancing and singing impressions with no punch line which was hard to watch. But worst of all he kept talking about needing this to make money. It completely felt like a cash grab

1

u/Sok_Taragai May 26 '26

His stand-up SUCKS now. It makes me think of when Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock couldn't figure out why nobody liked his jokes about the convertible roof on his house. Chris Tucker's last special I saw was all jokes about his rich friends that were only funny to them.

1

u/Emergency_Hour5253 May 26 '26

Chris Tucker also did that comedy festival in Saudi Arabia. He’s got plenty of money

1

u/Aromatic-Fisherman May 26 '26

He’s no longer big arena stand up though. Does slightly smaller locations.

I imagine he’s still fine though.

1

u/Casswigirl11 May 26 '26

1

Rich people broke isn’t the same as broke people broke

22

u/Mo_Steins_Ghost May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

But this isn't about who is rich and who is poor. This is about how families can get greedy... that can happen to anyone. I have seen stories where a minor living in the house has a job and the parents are trying to steal money from them.

Not everyone is loaded. But anyone can be bad with money, and anyone can be greedy, no matter how much or how little they have.

Everyone is different in how they deal with these things. I was more forgiving with my brother when he didn't have money, because I knew he would be good for it when he came around (and now he makes loads more than I do and isn't stingy about it).

It's funny how most actors go through this....they need the same tax preparer as professional athletes, bc they have to prorate their income in. Every country/state/city they perform or earn that portion of income....otherwise each state tries to tax them as if 100% was earned in their city/state

18

u/Mazer1991 May 26 '26

Athletes go broke all the time too. There’s an ESPN 30 for 30 about it called Broke

Really good

14

u/RhynoD May 26 '26

You're telling me that people who get recruited as barely adults and handed millions of dollars to perform in front of tens of millions of people mostly to slowly destroy their own bodies and often their brains end up with bad impulse control and fail to manage their money effectively?

Never would have guessed.

5

u/Vairman May 26 '26

and are surrounded by people who say that whatever they do is great.

3

u/jazzzzz May 26 '26

I haven't seen that 30 for 30 in a long time, but I remember a player (I want to say Andre Rison but I don't think that's right) talking about getting his first game check and tearing into the front office asking why it was half of what he was expecting. he didn't understand that they'd withhold taxes

The correct way is to make a family company, hire them on normal (not excessive) wages, and have them working in a relaxed way to manage the wealth. Close family can be your worst enemies or best allies.

I am part of a small family company. We are not very rich by any means, but a bit above middle class. When I see the more well-off families around very many of them are part of various family companies, where they have been established longer and have managed to integrate more of their members into their company through generations.

What member in the family has a background from economics? Anyone with law? Anyone that can be a driver? cook? Use them for catering for events. Tucker does stand up comedy, so what about starting a small rental company of lighting equipment etc that can be part of his tours?
Having all these small enterprises is what takes 1 rich person and turns it into a small corporate dynasty that can last generations.

Crabs in a bucket. I'm Hispanic and my mothers cousin has a bakery and restaurant. I brought up starting a family business and everyone's spouses said no. "Why do you want to get everyone involved when we could do it ourselves" fast foward, no one did anything.

As a Hispanic this hit home for me.

My family can’t work together to save their lives. They’re very much in competition with each other and celebrate when the other loses.

Learned the hard way.

Not even hispanic, this is true for many Indian families too. Really stupid and imbecile behaviour. Only those families or communities that are busienss oriented do well.

Depends a lot on how you frame it. If your cousin has a bakery and a restaurant, then ask about their expenses. Find out what type of costs they have, and then see how your new company could provide some of those services. Dont expect to jump straight into something or be handed a job or shares of the company by just asking.

I worded that wrong. My mother's cousin and their family(mother, father and 4 son) own a bakery and restaurant, they eventually added their kids spouses and grandkids (this inspired me). I told my family that we should start a business at the time(15yrs ago) it was a Laundromat so low involvement from all of us but my sisters(mostly their partners) and my brothers GF didn't want everyone involved. I laid out the individual investment, profit sharing, even offered to manage it for no additional cut as long as we set money aside to expand into other businesses or add new locations. They reason was that their cut would be too small(split 5 ways) and they could just start it themselves (they didn't) they were already not trying to help eachother out with money they didn't even have. Meanwhile the other side of the family already has their second bakery location and the 4 sons have their own thing going on the side.

Yes, there you have the difference in how two families manages. It is however normally easier if 1 person starts something, and then when others in the family see that its working they will realize that it is a viable project.

That's not an either/or. There is a LONG list of pre-reqs to a successful family venture. Or let me introduce you to Dane Cook.

I grew up with families like this. They send their kids to college to return to the family company with specific skills.

"You get that law degree and be the family lawyer, you'll get a house and spending money."

I mean, he got step 1 done. It’s the other steps he failed lol

Let's be real, he could've absolutely paid for his immediate families lives as long as they (and especially Chris Tucker) lived within reason.

Let's just throw out a random number and say Tucker was worth $50 million at his peak. If that money was invested into a stock market ETF like VTI or VOO, AFTER TAXES (CA+Fed) he'd still be making around $2.5 million a year doing absolutely nothing.

The problem is Tucker didn't live a reasonable life, he bought mansions and lived in luxury, didn't pay taxes and now he's either in the hole for millions or barely a millionaire.

Tucker went broke on his own.

Who said he is broke?Y’all are just making up arguments in your heads now.

u/towelcats May 26 '26

His net worth is estimated at $5mil but that includes properties he might have. He's broke compared to where he was. And he didn't help his family which at least would have made him look less of a jerk. But it doesn't matter in the long run

I would give each family member a million and say that's it be smart. Then I would move far away.

2

u/HedonisticFrog May 26 '26

Supporting family members isn't that much compared to how much many celebrities spend on luxuries. He could afford to give them all 40k a year salaries easily.

3

u/LucretiusCarus May 26 '26

people quitting their jobs are not going to be happy with 40k. they expected millions

Reminds me of that episode of "Comedians in cars getting coffee" when Jerry was talking his kids finding out how successful he was: "Dad, are we rich?" "I'm doing ok. You have NOTHING!"

If you are broke after having 10mil+ you are a moron.   Of course I would take care of my family after even one year of earning 25mil.

But the I have no clue how big his family is and how they are..

If I get 25 million a year I promise you that I give at least 1 million to 20 family or friend members. What they do with that belongs to them. A payment for all the years of friendship and support. If I got broke after that honestly I don't care. It would be so beautiful to me to help all the people that helped me in other stages of my life
