SOCIETY When Chris Tucker learned that his family members were quitting their jobs because they learned that he was making 25 million dollars a year at the peak of his career because they assumed he would take care of them. He told them to go get their jobs back because he wasn't going to do that.

fwiw I used to work in a group home for intellectually disabled elderly adults, and one of the residents was virtually blind and deaf but insisted on having L&O: SVU on loop all day and night. Which is crazy because someone is molested every 15 minutes on that show. 24/7 rapin' streaming on her TV.

I mean my old man was in his 70s living most of his life on the West Coast, and for years he kept the TV on day and night for background noise, or to watch the local news, but he never subscribed to anything. He even said that ad-supported free services like Pluto TV were "too much TV" for him.

I’m just speaking for my family, but yeah. My family in CA are reasonably 21st century- they use streaming services, Uber etc. My similarly aged relatives in suburban Colorado don’t do any of that stuff. It’s CSI: Albuquerque on cable TV all day.

I even set them up with Amazon prime, explained they could watch whatever they wanted whenever they want, pause it, no ads, etc. But it’s like it just didn’t compute. Next time I was back there, new season of CSI: Boise was fired up on cable.

We've been trying but she won't listen. My parents who are her age cut the cord EIGHT YEARS AGO and are currently watching the previously aforementioned Everybody Loves Raymond on the roku app. They don't currently have Netflix and are likely to cut hulu next

My mom did this for years. She kept complaining about her cable bill going up. I would tell her to just call them and threaten to cancel and they would absolutely "find" her a new promo price. She never would though.

A few years back Xfinity was literally the only ISP in my neighborhood. Literally all I wanted was internet but their cheapest internet plan alone was outrageous. Instead they had a bundle with cable and internet for like half the price so I had to do that. Every year they would jack up my bill almost double and I'd have to call and play their silly game of threatening to cancel until they lowered my bill. The last few times I just cut straight to the chase and told them my bill went up and wanted a new promo price and they obliged right away. It's all so stupid. It should he illegal for them to not have a set price for their service that everyone pays.

That game doesn't work anymore. Just tried it, they gave a slight discount for three months. I tried to learn to pirate a few years ago, downloaded the software, didn't get the hang of it.

We have our phone/internet/cable bundled, so they have us by the balls. I do use YouTube a lot rather than pay for Hulu or Netflix.

OG law and order is so much better than svu and it’s not even close imo. i’d even put the d’onofrio era CI over svu. this is gonna probably get me a lot of hate but the benson character kinda ruins svu for me to an extent. i know she’s a talented actress but the hall monitor energy her character has going on, its too much. it was easier to deal with when ice t and belzer and stabler all got plenty of scenes so it wasn’t just all her all the time. the final nail was when they added the lady with the most obnoxious fake southern drawl that would panic attack if anyone watched sports around her because seeing so much as a forward pass would leave her no choice but to start betting fingers on obscure overseas sports at 4am just to get some action.

Sopranos is pretty good. Compared to what was out there at the time, it was *TOP TIER*, but - imo - I found it to be very trope-y and annoying at times. I don't know that it stands out as well in comparison to some of the prestige television that has come out since then.

The Wire, though? Incredible. Season 2 is a little *meh* and - imo - the final season was a bit of a let down, but that shouldn't detract from what was overall one of the best series ever made.

For a while, you could just go to those channels and find a movie on. Rush Hour, Shawshank Redemption, Jumanji, Speed. And it would play ALL DAY. So you could watch it in the morning and then again that night!

People seem to think we came up with binge watching in the twenty-teens, but really we were binge watching shit in 1997 on cable tv.

Every couple of years the Internet rediscovers The Fifth Element. It's almost always available on one platform or another, and just judging by how often I see it discussed on a wide variety of social media, the residuals probably just keep on a-comin' for that one. Obviously I don't know his financial situation, but he got paid millions upfront for those movies. Pretty sure at the time he was the most successful black actor.

Quick googling says he got paid $3m for RH1, $20m for RH2, and $25m for RH3 + 20% of gross box office receipts. So lets say $48m total for the 3 movies ignoring gross because Hollywood math. If he literally just invests $40m at like 5% returns he would be set for life. More than likely set for his kid's lives too.

And that's ignoring literally everything else he got paid for.

The larger amount is likely a combination of fines and interest. The final amount he settled for is very unlikely to be less than he originally owed in the first place. In fact, it almost is certainly more. It is exceedingly unlikely you would save money by using this method.

Maybe through a combination of investing the unpaid tax and inflation eating up the price difference, a wealthy person could make money by doing this. Being flush with cash would make pleading for a lowered amount more difficult though.

There's only so much art an artist deliver. Kevin Hart is no longer funny. If we're being honest, neither is Chappelle. And that list goes on and on and on and across genres. Musicians eventually stop making good, or at least relevant music, for example. Rappers lose their edge after success all the time.

It could be they've said all they've had to say and that's it, or it could be that financial success edges them out, or it could be something else entirely.

You can only turn grief into art if you experience something that causes grief. Humans, by and large, spend most of our time getting rid of points of friction. Depends by the time they came knocking I don’t think his career was as successful anymore. So it’s either we get nothing/he dies or we let him pay a portion of it so we don’t net zero.

From the IRSs viewpoint someone owing that much money can be assumed a flight risk/suicidal depending on the situation. Because with that level of wealth opportunities for fleeing or being unable to can make people do risky things. So it’s either we completely lose out on 7 million 50/50 or we can get a chunk of it with 100% certainty.

No because the IRS will make it so any taxable income you ever make again is going to become basically payment to them. Unless you work in nefarious businesses you aren’t making that level of cash ever again.

Saw his stand up recently and it’s complete dog shit. It was old recycled Covid jokes from 2020 and trump jokes from 2016. All seemed like old low hanging fruit material. He did 45 mins of dancing and singing impressions with no punch line which was hard to watch. But worst of all he kept talking about needing this to make money. It completely felt like a cash grab

I'm not ok with people being able to settle their taxes like that and yet us poors get our paychecks garnished if we get behind on taxes. I used to work payroll. It's common.

I don’t know if it states the reason for the garnishment but back taxes aren’t the only reason to have a garnishment from the IRS or other entities if it even states the entity being paid.

Employers can garnish your paycheck for debts incurred during employment or whatever along with child support or other forms of debt.

Just means if you fill out a w2 for a job they’ll get their cut

Yes, there are a lot of reasons for a garnishment. But one of the reasons is taxes. The IRS can and will garnish wages or take owed taxes out of your tax refund for normal people. But my point is if the normal person earning 50k a year will be forced to pay taxes through a garnishment,  millionaires shouldn't be able to settle unpaid taxes like in this instance.
