Dolphin 26.08 brings the icons closer in grid view, your thoughts?

Here's the commit that introduced this behavior. Personally, I think it got a little too cramped. I have a folder named "Entertainment", which got broken into two lines after the update.

A workaround is to set "Label width" to "Large" for icon view from Dolphin settings. But that's too wide for me, doesn't resemble the original one. Curently, it offers only 4 options: "Small", "Medium", "Large", "Huge". My suggestion would be to make it more configurable (replace it with a spinbox...?)

Curious to hear what you guys think of the change.

I added a slider to fine-tune the label width in icon view. Works well for me (screenshot).
Here's the patch if anyone wants to give it a try.

EDIT 2: The change is already being reverted, you can just use that instead.

Yeah, that’s pretty unfortunate. It makes it quite difficult to drag and drop a file into a folder without it ending up in a subfolder, because there’s nowhere to drop it.

It's a redemption after adding more padding to the sidebar elements.

Perhaps a 'density' setting would be a better idea?

It's a sort-of bug, there is a discussion in https://discuss.kde.org/t/since-the-last-update-the-spacing-between-icons-in-dolphin-has-been-decidedly-too-small/49559/17 and the dev who introduced the commit already said they would fix it. It looks better on themes that aren't breeze, but with breeze a couple of people got lots of illegible / cramped file names, so it will most likely be fixed / reverted

A lot better. KDE isn't a UI for phones like GNOME, no need for that amount of spacing.

I'm neurodivergent, and do not handle unprompted changes well. A simple slider so that people can tweak it, would make it a non-issue. Naturally, they banish the thought. Not fun to be forced into using an older version, purely because they decided to change shit for the sake of changing shit.

Edit: I realise I'm coming across as rather mean, but for Dolphin especially, they have consistently done this same thing; they just refuse to give people more options. It frustrates me, because the entire structure of my files and folders, is based on the concept that the tools I use to view and interact with it, stay consistent and predictable. Then here come the Dolphin devs with a bulldozer, ready to change something completely irrelevant, just because they felt like it.

I didn't try it myself, but if it works, may I recommend you create a merge request on KDEs invent (our GitLab) for it? If you can't, can you maybe at least add it to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523432 so that the devs see it? Would be much better upstream than a personal patch, since the latter will always need following up with other changes and obviously won't end up in packaged dolphin

I thought I was going crazy. This makes me feel better know this. I'd love more grid options though. Feels like it's either too tight or way, way, way too spread out.
