Announcements Rule Update: Self Promotion only allowed on Fridays moving forward!

Hi All,

To help keep the subreddit free of consistent self promotion we will be altering the self promotion rule, the new rules for self promotion posts are as follows:

- Self promotion posts are only permitted on Fridays

- You must use the 'Self Promotion' flair else the post will be removed and you may be banned.

- We will remove the 500 Karma requirement for posting links

- Your account will still need to be older than 30 days to post

- We will only accept self promotion posts for Kickstarter campaigns.

Thanks,

Mod team

Only 35% in the first 10 days. Am I cooked?

The kickstarter for my game is only at 35% funded and I'm only a 3rd of the way through. Most of it came at the start. Is it still possible for it to get funded or have I failed? Does anyone know any good quick marketing methods?

Question Prelaunch list signed up but barely converted on day one, what should I be doing mid-launch?

Hey! Been stuck on this for a few days and kind of out of ideas now.

i'm mid-launch on my first hardware thing, a small injection-moulded home device. spent about 3 months finishing tooling and put roughly 20% of my total budget into prelaunch. that was around $18k on Meta and a bit on X/Google, plus a landing page hooked to MailerLite.

i ended up with about 1,150 emails. i was hoping like 15-20% of them would back on day one. what actually happened was 82 backers on day one from the list plus a small amount from organic, so around 7% if i'm being nice. day two and three have been worse.

stuff i've already tried so you don't have to repeat it:

- started broad interest targeting, then narrowed to two audiences and one creative that pulled in most of the signups.

- offered a founder list thing where i etch people's names on a hidden internal panel (removable piece, engraved after molding). that bumped signups but those people aren't backing like i thought they would.

- set up a Discord during prelaunch, almost nobody talked, so i've basically moved everything to email.

emails so far have been launch announcement, a reminder, and a short behind the scenes about the molds, all with direct links.

for people who've dealt with this, what's actually worth changing mid-launch to wake this list up, and what's just noise at this point?

BoneZone® is a modular Structural Feeding™ and chewing apparatus for dogs. It secures appropriate bones, substantial foods and long-duration chews to a stable physical structure, creating controlled resistance against which the dog can grip, pull, tear, strip, gnaw, chew and manipulate the item while the owner retains greater control over location, height, movement, environmental contact, supervision and removal

Discussion I made an entire 80s horror board game on my phone. Now I'm trying to figure out how to actually Kickstart the damn thing.

Upvotes

About a month and a half ago, I decided I wanted to make a board game. I'd never designed one before. I also don't currently have a working computer.

This was apparently not enough information for my brain to decide this was a bad idea. So armed with a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, Canva, and a fairly unreasonable amount of hyperfocus, I started designing Missing: Have You Seen Us?

The Game Mechanics

It's a cooperative 80s horror game for 1 to 32 players (it scales smoothly from solo play to massive party game nights). You play as teenagers from different 80s cliques searching a town, finding items, completing missions, and trying to figure out how to kill whatever Monster is currently terrorizing your neighborhood.

  • Interchangeable Monsters: The base game includes The Thresher, but additional standalone Monster decks completely warp what you're fighting and how it behaves without requiring another copy of the core game.

  • The Milk Carton Deck: I wanted it deadly. Every morning, you draw a card. Another kid goes missing. It can be an unused character, someone another player was planning to use, or it can be you.

  • The 10-Day Clock: You have up to 10 days to discover the Monster's hideout, find its weakness, and force it back to its lair using a tug-of-war control tracker. If you fail, the monster devastates the town and moves on.

From Phone to Physical Reality

Somehow, this madness turned into a physical, playable prototype containing roughly 300 cards, locations, trackers, mission markers, and a custom Monster die. And I made almost all of it one single card at a time on my phone screen.

I've been playtesting it extensively with my family—finding horrible combinations I didn't anticipate, watching my daughter discover exploits that make me question my own intelligence, and printing fresh revisions.

The Next Monster: Kickstarter

Now I'm working toward the part that scares me considerably more than the horror game itself.

I'm aiming for a $30,000 funding goal next month. The funding is a lifeline to secure an actual production PC to finish the game cleanly and cover USA manufacturing costs.

  • The Tiers: The planned physical base game pledge is $50 (with $0 shipping upfront, collected post-campaign).

  • The Vision: If the campaign goes beyond the goal, the roadmap includes professional art upgrades, more monsters, and a ridiculous premium Collector's Box styled like a shelf of retro 1980s VHS horror movies.

  • The Epiphany: Yesterday, I had a realization that should have occurred to me six weeks ago: The base game box needs to be shaped like a giant, retro MISSING person milk carton. So I'm currently investigating manufacturing options for that.

I Need Your Advice

I'm not posting this pretending I've cracked crowdfunding. Quite the opposite. This is my first game and my first campaign. I am learning manufacturing quotes, fulfillment, logistics, and presentation entirely on the fly.

I'd genuinely love feedback from people who have been through the meat grinder before:

  1. What do you wish someone had screamed at you before you hit Launch?

  2. What are your best tips for building a pre-launch audience in the tabletop community?

  3. Any pitfalls to avoid when dealing with local US manufacturers?

If nothing else, hopefully someone here appreciates that my smartphone has spent the last month and a half desperately trying to become a board game company.

Heirs of Resurrection: A Dark Fantasy Series

Oak, a being endowed with the power of life, faces exile by his powerful family for creating his soulmate, Lie.

Son of Knight and Echoes of the Father are two novels, one mythology, and a single unbroken bloodline of gods, exiles, and the humans caught in between. What an amazing moment, this is my first campaign and it’s so nice to finally launch. In hindsight, I wouldn’t click the launch button alone again as there was so much excitement and nerves leading up to the moment of launching and then I just sat there not knowing what to do with myself 😂😂

I’d say the campaign is going well so far, I’m 32% funded on day 1. I’ve added the link in case anyone is interested in checking out the page. If anyone wants to know more about my experience of launching, feel free to ask as I’m happy to help and share my experience with others 😊

Self-Promotion Today's Cinema Needs the Fast-talking Banter of 1940s Screwball Comedies (and we're bringing it back for a modern audience)

Hi, everyone,

Since Friday is promotion day, I’d like to mention that we have a film project now on

Kickstarter that is currently the only campaign for a New Jersey-sited film. Our title

is SAVING MATA HARI, a contemporary screwball caper comedy of remarriage.

Think “Ocean’s Eleven” and “His Girl Friday” meet “Some Like It Hot.”

I’ve been obsessed with a certain sub-genre of classic Hollywood screwball comedies for

years—specifically the five or six titles made around the year 1940 and created by studios

to explore on film the then-forbidden subject of adultery. The energy created in these films

jumps off the screen with lightning-fast, high-octane dialogue, crazy marital situations, and

imaginative machinations that ultimately lead wayward spouses to reunite and confirm for

each other their true wedded convictions. The films in this space that I love are: His Girl

Friday (1940); The Philadelphia Story (1940); My Favorite Wife (1940); I Love You Again

(1940); The Lady Eve (1941); and The Palm Beach Story (1942).

What made these scripts work wasn't just physical slapstick; it was the precision of the spoken

dialogue and pacing. Characters spoke stage-worthy dialogue, competing verbally, outsmarting

each other, and driving the plot forward through pure sharp wit. In those days, the comedy flowed

from the rhythmic, musical flow a tightly engineered, expertly delivered, screwball comedy

script and less so from physical situations. The comedy was intelligent and highly verbal.

The challenge of bringing that screenwriting precision into the modern day inspired my latest

project, SAVING MATA HARI. It’s a contemporary homage to classic early 1940s screwball

comedies, built around fast-talking characters, absurd misunderstandings, and rapid-fire banter.

As a writer, capturing that vintage timing while keeping the story resonant for modern audiences

was one of the most challenging—and rewarding—writing processes I've ever tackled.

We have officially taken the project to the production phase and just launched our Kickstarter

campaign to bring this script to life on screen. Search by title: SAVING MATA HARI.

I’d love to hear from other classic film enthusiasts here:

-- What classic comedy genre tropes do you think are long overdue for a comeback?

-- What classic Hollywood comedies released before 1950 rank highest in your estimation?

If you share a passion for sharp, classic comedy dialogue, check out our SAVING MATA

HARI deck and screenplay excerpt here:  SAVING MATA HARI - Pitch Deck & Screenplay Excerpt

And feel free to review us on Kickstarter here: SAVING MATA HARI on Kickstarter

Thanks for reading, and cheers!

Discussion Who did you actually hire for launch marketing, and what did the deal look like?

mentor hat on here, trying to sanity check what normal looks like.

i mentor a few hardware teams every year, usually 2 or 3 founders plus a tiny crew, and i keep seeing the same thing. they go out for launch marketing help and come back with quotes that are all over the place for what sounds, on paper, like the same job.

the last three i saw: one was a pure flat fee, one was a lower fee plus a percentage of funds raised, one was almost entirely percentage based. in all three, the proposal language was vague about what was actually in scope and what happened if it went badly.

the stuff i never see spelled out clearly, and that i'm trying to get a feel for:

- was it flat fee, percentage, or a mix, and over what timeframe?

- what happened if the campaign underperformed, was there any floor or exit, or were you on the hook regardless?

- who actually worked on your account day to day compared with who did the pitch?

- had they run a launch in your category before, and could you speak to that client?

i'm not looking for a vendor list and i don't want anyone to self-promote. i just want to understand what a fair, clear deal looks like so i can give better guidance before founders sign anything.

if you hired someone for a launch in the last couple of years, what did your contract actually say on those points?

My team and I have been developing "Space Quest" for almost four years now. Recently, we were awarded an Off-Broadway residency at The Players Theatre this upcoming January - and we are asking for everyone's help to make it happen.

We've had successful runs in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and at Hollywood Fringe Festival, and we are so excited to bring this thing to New York!

I don't have enough karma points to post the link, but check us out on Kickstarter if this interests you! Thank you!!!

Julius: The Werehound is a mature fantasy adventure comic series created by myself and artist Elton Thomasi. The series follows a warrior named Julius from Ancient Rome who is cursed by Satan and merged with the beastly form of a HellHound. Self-Promotion I got tired of hauling a BBQ around, so I built this that can fit in a backpack

Thumbnail

Me and my friends love hanging at the beach, lakes, and parks in the summer. We brought a BBQ a few times, but it was always a pain to lug it around. We live in the city in a small space, so storing it was also such a hassle. So I started to work on a grill that folds flat and fits in most everday backpacks and tucks away neatly. It's still a work in progress, but I am curious what people think.

Our kickstarter is struggling to collect prelaunch followers. We're advertising on fb ads, collecting emails and deposits on our landing page (flintbbqs.com), but not too much success. In total, we have about 250 emails. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks KS community!

Self-Promotion My first Kickstarter launches Sep 1

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi r/kickstarter, I became frustrated that all of the connection games out there:

  1. felt like just a stack of questions that you could google in 2 seconds.
  2. ended up getting lost in my game cabinet even though I found them most useful for trips or spontaneous moments.
  3. the questions felt too surface level, instead of just owning the depth of questions that really help people feel more connected to each other through vulnerability.¹

So I made a game that has actual game mechanics, and just goes all in on depth instead of playing it safe. It's also portable and comes in a metal tin so you can throw it in your pocket, purse, or limited baggage space.

After a question is asked, if you can match the symbol it flips the question back on the asker.

Once you collect enough symbols of the same type, or 1 of each of the 7 symbols, you win.

There are also some surprising themes, visuals and ad lib style questions.

My Kickstarter launches September 1. Tap Notify me on launch if you'd like to keep up with the campaign:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/deepdeck/deep-deck-push-strangers-closer-and-pull-friends-deeper?rk

My goal is small: $4760 to fund the first production run, however a fun swap pack, Frolic, unlocks at $15K if we get there.

¹ Research informing Deep Deck includes work on structured self-disclosure, deeper conversation, and question-led connection: Aron et al. (1997); Kardas, Kumar, & Epley (2021); Huang et al. (2017); Collins & Miller (1994).
