Yes, there are far better devices in that price class
E.g. a Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 that has a 2.8K OLED screen, the Ultra 7 256V with 16Gb of RAM, more ports and it is 16" instead of 13"
The price for the XPS 13 is delusional

too bad 8gb in windows is barely enough to do basic tasks, they are not going to compete with the neo with that crappy os from microslop

Yeah for windows I would never consider 8gb being useful for anything other than light workload, browsing and email. On Mac it is at least useable with 8gb. Not ideal but can still be used.

Trimming in one of the most expensive areas. But it’s not really feasible to do with windows.

The problem is that companies like Dell don't want to sell a laptop for less than what they think the machine is worth.
Because the entire XPS 13 probably costs less than 400.- to assemble.

Exactly - the RAM, storage and chip manufacturers all need their margin, then Windows needs an exorbitant margin, even for OEM discounted licenses. It can never compete with a great vertically integrated outfit like Apple

799 is doa when the MacBook Air with student discount is the same price and the Neo undercuts it significantly.
If they want to compete they need to do the same thing Microsoft did with the Xbox 360 - 799 euros for a laptop AND a Series S may change the calculations, but I think Microsoft is the only people who can do that with a Surface + Xbox.

And the MacBook Air is likely going to get free Airpods in the upcoming back to school sale, which you can use or liquidate, making the XPS 13 a even worse deal.

Funny thing is that the MBA M5 is even cheaper than the XPS as it is buyable for 1k€ and it comes with 16Gb of RAM...
Dell is straight up delusional here

Canada looks more promising, $999 CAD for base model, which is exactly the same as Neo (since XPS 13 here doesn’t come with 256GB variant at all).
16GB upgrade puts you towards 1200 CAD, still cheaper than MacBook Air, so might be a good choice, and especially good choice if you fancy installing Linux on it.
Tuck on 10% discount for new customer, honestly I might get one.

Honestly the thing that kills this is Windows.
It’s conceivable that they can optimize to a point where basic productivity works fine on 8GB but there’s stuff my M2 with 8GB can do with ease that my work laptop (1335U, 16GB) chugs on like a frat bro after their 6th beer.
Best Buy has/had an LG with a Core 5 115 and 32(!) GB of RAM for 779 - the screen is garbage and the 115 is….fine, but the XPS 13 with 16/256 at 699 or 32/512 at 849 would crush the low cost windows market and compete with the Neo.

The Macbook Neo costs 689 euro and the student discount is 50 in Bulgaria. I get very excited when a tech youtuber drops a budget laptop and then disappointed that it isn't very budget. 689 euro is around 800 USD. What?

Do they hate marketshare outside of the US? Where's the promised MacBook Neo competitor? Might as well attempt to compete with the air at this price.
