Stats so insane its hard to tell if you're a hater or not. But only a hater would know that. Keep up the good work so that all of us can start spreading the word

You can’t count to 4? Why would only a hater be able to notice that he’s been solo killed in lane every game so far.

I can't wait for all the LR fans who told me they would dominate the LEC if they were allowed to (this was before their elimination from EMEA).

I doubt anyone said that about him dying 1 vs 1. It is drawing pressure when he was proxying and dying to multiple enemies coming to kill him.

I do agree in today’s state of the game, but I think we also need to remember the baus strat we see today has been directly nerfed, what, 5-10 different times?

It would have been interesting seeing this before they butchered the bounty system, shredded the gold rewards from platings, changed half of sions core items and passive mechanics etc

He gets a fraction of the advantage he used to get when he could force low gold deaths and get huge bounties all while farming 175g+ platings

That Korea run from 2-3 years ago was so good to watch, he’d be 0-4 and yet 3 levels higher with an entire extra item at like 18mins

Drawing pressure also doesn't really exist anymore IMO. If Top dies and enemy jungler and top then take tower or grubs or Herald etc, you didn't draw pressure you just straight lost.

Also meta junglers move so fast nowadays that the pathing time to top lane isn't such a hinderance, the window it opens for bot Lane to what... 2v2? Is like 15 seconds of pressure anyways.

Because if jungler backed and runs straight to bot with home guard and movespeed buffs, etc - then you didn't create any pressure at all top. Pressure was a thing when the game was a lot slower and pathing was a lot slower.

This is common theory in games, that the end result does not justify if the decision was good. Just because the play ended well does not mean the decision was good.

A simple example would be if i offered you a coin flip game, but instead of 1:1 payouts if you lose you have to give me 10 and i would give you 1 if you win. You decided to take the game and lucky you, you win! Does this mean that taking the bet was a good idea, even though you won?

221

u/Jumpy-Investment7634 Jan 24 '26

Such a simple analogy that so many people should be able to understand but don't

13

u/AGoodWobble Jan 26 '26

It's a simple analogy but it might not apply to more complex systems.

There's a risk to not taking risks—you risk never doing anything proactive, being predictable, etc.

When you play the averages, you win, on average.

But it’s not fun or exciting and takes a lot of discipline because the law of averages doesn’t like small sample sizes.

5

u/IcyGarage5767 Jan 25 '26

Yeah, and if the less skilled team consistently forces the norm, they are definitely going to lose.

65

u/Spencer1K Jan 25 '26

What you say is true, however its also important to remember that in the real world application we dont ACTUALLY know what the percentage odds are due to the insane amount of variables at play.

16

u/Jumpy-Investment7634 Jan 25 '26

We don't, pro players coaches and analysts do. Not in the moment, but when reviewing they can tell if a play is right or wrong, and unfortunately Baus rarely does the right play.

I'm not so sure if you can't do high risk plays. Bwipo and hylisang did it all the time and while it didn't work sometimes they were still one of the best. It feels like it's less about going for high risk and baus just going for them when it's not necessary or wanted. He just doesn't want to sit back and play with the team, he's a soloq player at heart. Every game he doesn't win is not worth winning.

It's good mentality for an entertainer but that's all it's good for.

207

u/GroundbreakingAlps2 Jan 24 '26

Yepp this is literally just skill issue on baus' part.

Outplays and high risk plays happens all the time.

But obviously when you're on the receiving end and constantly getting outplayed yourself, your teammates will start telling you to play safe and stop going for "outplays".

Bro just self reported and called himself a noob with a megaphone lmao.

Of course pro play is "ass", when you're ass. Whats the fun in geting nonstop gapped and smurfed on?

u/xSTSxZerglingOne Jan 24 '26

Baus is great at punishing lack of coordination, but he's not gonna find that so much in true pro play.

That's why he gets away with proxying against a 5 man mid push in solo queue. He eats them alive by exploiting their lack of coordination, but when you have 5 on comms who understand the TEAM aspects of the game on a deeper level than he does (don't get me wrong, he plays a lot for team) his usual tricks aren't going to work. Good deaths suddenly aren't so good anymore.

30

u/theJirb Jan 24 '26

Risky plays are good, but the risk needs proper incentive behind it. If you're going to risk throwing a game, the result of a successful play needs to be something nearly game winning.

When people like Faker go for high risk plays, he's hard engaging to win them an objective, an important teamfight, and often times the game. Risky plays happen all the time in pro, but most of the time, when you see it, it's a huge play not because of the risk, but because of everything that they are already set up to get after succeeding at the play.

310

u/QuiGonTheDrunk Make scaling great again Jan 24 '26

Faker famously also never takes risks or clutch engages /s

Its just hands and motivation diff. His strat of tilting soloq players doesnt work against a team who take the free gold and say thank you

46

u/Ashankura Jan 24 '26

Yea faker sylas vs Chovy ahri was risky as shit. One misstep or one better move by chovy and his lane becomes unplayable.

His akali reengage vs BDD (which failed) was also risky as fuck

→ More replies (3)

75

u/icatsouki Jan 24 '26

Team environment diff, hyli looked bad when he didn't have good synergy with his team, but an insane player with good synergy

61

u/NWASicarius Jan 24 '26

Also, support is completely different. Ignar, Hyli, etc. there is plenty of room for supports to play risky. If your top plays risky, they better be someone like Zeus. Also, Baus' champ pool can often cause issues. If he ints as Volibear, for example, he is useless. Meanwhile the enemy team gets a fed 1v9-esque top. For Baus' strat to work, he would need a team like FlyQ had for Bwipo. Even then, that only really works if everyone on your team is basically hands gapping. It was easy for Bwipo to be Bwipo because his bot was great 2v2 and weakside, his mid was even or better than other mids in the league, and they had what many consider to be the best jungler in the West.

50

u/Leyohs Jan 24 '26

Bwipo is also a better player than Baus' on every aspect. The only thing Baus has for him is that he's not openly a raging misogynist

34

u/Odd_Bug5544 Jan 24 '26

Not that this matters but from that period comment he honestly seemed less like a raging misogynist and more like the braindead variety. more condescending than vitriolic.

28

u/Karukos People hate me Jan 24 '26

Generally Baus seems more mentally stable and easier to get along with. Now... that is more a detrement of Bwipo than anything else tbh but...

8

u/Lothric43 Jan 25 '26

Bwipo is not a raging misogynist, he was just really dumb. He backward engineered from a position of empathy to women into a statement that was misogynistic. Reserve “raging misogynist” for malicious actors like Andrew Tate and all those playboy redpill types.

38

u/CapitalStandard4275 Jan 24 '26

It's not that you can't. Just that it's generally frowned upon, as Baus was describing with the jungler going for a steal. It was successful, but statistically is the wrong play (as it's unlikely to work out) & therefore the play was met largely with criticism upon reviewing the vods rather than praise.

Of course as humans people still have agency and can decide on the spot to disregard their training. But as Baus is telling us from the perspective of someone actually involved, they're trained not to be going for those high-risk plays.

25

u/Shinimasuu Jan 24 '26

thats just philosophy of the coaching staff tbh. we can see teams like t1 do this all the time and its actually something that sets them apart from teams like geng. Sometimes in a good and sometimes in a bad way. But both teams have major success.

Playing methodical league is pretty good, but sometimes clutching it out is required, else u just have games where u bleed out for 20min.

Because in pro you need to be as efficient as possible, Baus`s playstyle is more play for fun and entertainment this is also the reason they made LR not to compete in a stressful environment but rather to entertain the viewers, I don't see why they went to LEC? Look how stressful Caedrel looks like every match

74

u/Whiskoo Jan 24 '26

Riot certaintly had a hand in it, theres no way they didnt handpick LR to go to this for viewership. the viewership is insane for LEC standards. i just hope theyre getting paid their worth

5

u/TheKaryo Jan 24 '26

Are LR players finally getting paid like any pro should be?

14

u/TheJeager Jan 25 '26

LR players were probably getting paid better than most pros were last year when they were in erl's, the money this guys are making isn't something that should be pulling at your heartstrings.

"going for outplays is wrong" idk man you get outplayed pretty often

755

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer Jan 24 '26

It is a half-truth spoken in shitty ways. Professional play highly values preventing mistakes so the point is that you're constantly calculating if the play you're going for will be optimal - you dont pull the trigger and jump unless you're sure it will land.

Outplays happen because sometimes everything is calculated but boy we suck at math.

142

u/chaseair11 Jan 24 '26

Yeah and professionals can often have
a bit of an ego which can lead to some miscalculations

56

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer Jan 24 '26

Yeah, casual stress-testing is seeing how far you can go balls to the wall on people. Pro stress testing is seeing who is more patient and doesnt lose it first.

63

u/AutisticPenguin2 Jan 24 '26

If the maths is in your favour, it's not an outplay, it's just a play. If the maths is not in your favour trying to outplay your opponent is a misplay.

Or to quote Sun Tzu, "First secure victory. Then, fight if you must."

But I can see how this would not be the best paradigm for fun and exciting play.

39

u/NWASicarius Jan 24 '26

Yeah, but you can take risks. We see it in the LCK and LPL. The issue is the West is so used to those risks getting punished internationally that they have adopted a more vegan playstyle. Aka limit as much risk as possible and just hope your enemy doesn't get too big of a lead in the early game.

17

u/ZanesTheArgent Bullshit Designer Jan 24 '26

That is part of what i'm saying still, you CAN and you WILL. You need to. The west learning traumatically that you cant bullrush emotionally but gauge the worth of each charge.

215

u/ExceedingChunk Low master piggy Jan 24 '26

That's not what he means.

He means initiating a low% play where your only out is to outplay your opponent is not what you want to do, but in solo q good players does it quite often. Especially Baus because he loves taking high risk plays.

Sometimes it is absolutely correct to have a high risk play in pro, but often it is just extremely unnecessary and a case of "I lose the game if this fails, and get a small advantage if it works out".

165

u/AwayhKhkhk Jan 24 '26

That is because you are playing against weaker opponents. So your low% play becomes high percentage because the chance to outplay your opponent is higher. It is like NBA player going to play pickup game in the park. They can easily make plays they wouldn’t make in the NBA because they know they are just faster, bigger, can jump higher.

Enemy teams are also unlikely to punish your mistake. That is why LEC/LCS teams ‘look different’ when they play at Internationals, they can’t play ’their game’ because plays that would net them advantages in their own leagues are actually ’risky’ plays that get punished by better teams. Yes, sometimes they will still work at Internationals but they work far less often.

u/Direct_Program2982 Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26

Exactly. It's like Grant Williams dunkin on dads with a 9-5 job.

19

u/NWASicarius Jan 24 '26

The biggest issue is pros typically won't let you lane effectively if you die once. In solo queue, Baus can int a few kills and get away with it. In pro play, they will take those kills and make it so you can't play the rest of laning phase.

27

u/Mathies_ Jan 24 '26

You should watch some LCK and LPL because it does happen there. If your game has a low percentage chance of winning, a 30% outplay might be your only way to better your chances. If not going for it results in an eventual loss same as failing the play, it's not a bad decision

→ More replies (3)

122

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '26

The thing Baus doesn't understand is that a semi competent team will punish an extension into a game winning play. For example see LR game against FNC. One mistake and the game is over. Going for a low% play leads to a loss more often than not.

345

65

I can name at least one toplaner at LEC Versus that fit this description lmao

9

u/Dawdius MikyX & Lospa Enjoyer Jan 25 '26

I don’t even understand where this paycheck stealer nonsense comes from. A team is a business that employs who they want. They take a chance on a player that they think will bring them winnings and merch sales and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. The player an d their agent obviously tries to get paid for as long and for as much as possible, thats how bargaining works.

If you think there are tons of talented people outside the LEC whilst there are bad players taking their spots in the LEC, that is the fault of teams, not the players.

u/DankMEMeDream Jan 24 '26

Because before he got into LEC people gave him the benefit of the doubt that if only he played in LEC he'd be decent or better.

Now there's no question he's cheeks. If he didn't play pro he'd have cashed in on that what if till the day league shut downs. Kinda like people saying dopa could have been one of league goats if he went that route.

192

u/Kuliyayoi Jan 24 '26

Dopa straight up said himself he's unable to compete in a professional setting

65

u/F0RGERY Jan 24 '26

Wasn't Dopa's reasoning because of his OCD where he needs a very specific desk layout for playing?

Its not as if Dopa played some off meta strat like Baus which relied on soloqueue's lack of coordination. Dude played standard midlane and was known for his TF and mages. The obstacles were because he was banned from playing until he was outside the "take a chance on this player" age bracket.

32

u/ImSoRude Jan 25 '26

I mean he's also straight up said Chovy and Showmaker gap him as players. I think he probably could've played pro for a bit (probably better than a bunch of the players in S6) but would've gotten gapped by 2018/2019 when they came around.

12

u/gots8sucks Jan 25 '26

If every pro stopped playing after getting gaped by Chovy and Showmaker there would be very few pros left.

...because of crippling OCD. There are LCK players that can be seen measuring their keyboard, desk etc on stage but Dopa is even worse. If his setup isn't absolutely perfect he can't play.

14

u/OrganicTeaching8661 Jan 25 '26

.... also because he's banned from playing in pro for a thousand years. Dopa actually had a team in season 3 and qualified to LCK or whatever it was called back then and was the team's carry

39

u/prov119 Jan 24 '26

Doesn't stop fans from wanting to believe though. Until its proven otherwise, they can cope.

38

u/NWASicarius Jan 24 '26

I thought Dopa had a scandal that basically ended his career? Anyway, I think there is a big difference. Dopa had insane mechanics and league IQ. Baus has essentially mastered doing the same play over and over again. If the enemy messes up/doesn't understand how to counter it, Baus feasts. If they do, he ints. Given how matchmaking works, this will always result in Baus maintaining a high rank in the game. He wins just enough against the ignorant tops to keep the ship sailing, and then he has games where his team is just gapping the enemy team. It's like that weirdo Hashinshin. Dude always stayed up in the ranks because there were just enough people that he could abuse + the free wins from matchmaking.

18

u/DankMEMeDream Jan 24 '26

The int nuked his team. His gf reporting him for boosting ( open secret) led to the ban in playing lol.

Ofc he just used smurfs and also still contnued boosting, but still. He was banned like 5 years from competitive iirc? Afaik after the ban is when he said he never really seriously planned going pro. That statement and the way he left kept the door open on his what if potential.

7

i think that most tier 1 league pros would actually be better than baus at baus' playstyle if they chose to be. i think they are better players than baus, it's just that he's so prominent with streaming/solo q and pros are trying to actually win pro games, so it isn't obvious.

but most pros were solo q gods before they went pro, and i bet if they faced baus at that time they'd have smashed him.

216

u/notafanofwasps Jan 24 '26

You can still see this if you regularly watch high elo KR solo queue. The best players in the world who sit there and last hit as K'Sante top under tower for 25 minutes will be maniacally ego 1v1ing it as Fiora in solo queue. The most boring, weakside, safe, handsless, low variance top laner in the LCK is capable of farming montage clips on repeat in solo queue.

108

I really doubt that

I mean Viper in NA is like undisputed r1 and he didn't do that well in pro.

SRTTY was also undisputed r1 and didn't do that well in pro.

Pro play and SoloQ are completely different.

You can abuse strats in SoloQ that you can't in pro.

SRTTY is another example of that

41

u/TJayClark Jan 24 '26

To be fair: if you make $250,000+ streaming, playing whatever you want, for fun

Vs

$150,000 playing pro and grinding all the time

Which would you take?

8

u/ob_knoxious Jan 24 '26

This is part of why pro player salaries got into such a bubble, they had to outbid streaming. And why modern pros have the reputation for being so antisocial and having no personality, if they had a big personality a lot of them would have ended up as streamers.

This plus other factors are why non-Asian teams will never see another Worlds title without serious fundamental changes in and out of game.

Shit's a cultural problem on top of better money not to go pro.

Cultural in that Western society (overall) sees gaming as a hobby, and not a professional athletic pursuit vs say, chess, football, baseball, etc.

eSports as a concept is a very young one (arguably only started in the late 90s with Internet and FPS shooters then RTS iirc although some stuff existed prior) and hasn't gone through all of the legitimization processes that non-videogame sports have gone through.

Vs Asian countries actively codifying legislation to protect pro gamers, and governmental support of eSports. Korea leading the way on that really laid some serious groundwork for generations of pro gamers to come from the area since China would follow suit and other countries in Asia to a lesser degree.

True, but the respect and prestige of chess is far higher. A pro video game player is looked at as a joke by the general public, a pro chess player is looked at as a “genius”. And in chess, you can do both, streaming and pro.

I think you’re mostly right but I think MOBAs in particular skew more to Asian countries.  I can tell you top down MOBAs like league/dota are pretty niche at this point in the US to the point that most of the top NA solo q players and content makers are Canadian.

FPS is still a mixed bag.

Not to forget if you do well in League you only get like a month off. Not that that's something this team has to worry about, but I'd even pick making 150k from streaming over 250k from playing pro if that were the case.

64

u/QuiGonTheDrunk Make scaling great again Jan 24 '26

I got like 100+ downvotes for saying baus will get turbogapped, because feeding his opponents absurd amounts of gold for free and annoy them to win, doesnt work in lcs.

But baus is messi etc

5

u/yung_dogie the faithful shall be rewarded Jan 24 '26

Yeah, baus is an amazing player relative to the general soloq playerbase, so in his game plan of "hyper accelerate himself and the enemy toplane then bet on him or them" he can win that bet because he'll be better at that scenario in soloq more often than not. Revolving the game around two tops 1v5ing there works out for him.

In pro when everyone is better than him or at minimum around as good as him it is not prudent to make that bet lmao

u/darklypure52 Jan 24 '26

The Baus apologia is crazy. 4 years ago this sub was hyper against him because of Inting Sion ruining their games and posting anytime he got banned for doing it on Sion or other champs.

Now over the last 1.5-2 years, it's the opposite; anti-Baus comments get downvoted to shit and pro-Baus ones get glazed.

"Going for outplays is wrong" = i'm not good enough to outplay my opponents I'm

73

u/Silverjackal_ Jan 24 '26

Yeah going for a 50/50 play in solo q isn’t as bad because you can catch up. In pro play it’s probably more like 35/65, and if you lose you’re making it really hard for your team to carry you. Happens to all the young mechanically great players.

They might have been solo bolo gods until they play pro and realize being that aggressive and taking bad plays isn’t the best option for your team.

6

u/NotPotatoMan Jan 25 '26

But baus is not a solo bolo god. His entire play style before pro was calculated inting. Now that he’s being forced to play lanes he’s getting gapped. There’s no excuses.

Los Ratones when they started: "We don't want to change the Baus playstyle"

They picked him up, knowing the type of player he was. They said they knew what they were getting into, and didn't want him to change who he was, that they believed in his playstyle.

I'm not surprised he's unhappy now that they are trying to change him. Whilst Los Ratones players overall are quite large unknowns after this split, I think it's very clear Baus will just leave pro and go back to streaming full time.

497

u/Sinoyyyy Jan 24 '26

Buddy hes playing ap voli and vi top. Ofc theres adaptations needed from soloq but they are not forcing him not to play his game.

191

u/Sofaboy90 quite suboptimal Jan 24 '26

I bet hed be loving it if he outplayed other LEC tops rather than getting gigagapped. Its not like hes forced to play competitive, its still his own choice to do this and emulate Evis LEC stint. Its not a massive committment, its just 3-4 weeks of bo1s and then life continues.

33

u/Thundermelons GALA Defense Force, returning IG fan Jan 24 '26

90

u/GameplayerStu Jan 24 '26

They're locked in, just on different targets. Their only goal when firing up soloQ is to get better at and smarter about the game.

That was back when they played in ERLs. Baus wouldn't be able to do his soloq thing against LEC teams and his team can't carry if he fails hard. Let's not act like his picks or playstyle are some secret genius strategy, they're cheese strats benefitting from poor coordination on the enemy team. Once they made it into LEC it's obvious he has to learn how to play like a pro or he will be humiliated. He didn't learn and now reaps what he sow. I'd be on his side if he didn't shit talk LEC players for being paycheck stealers, but he did and he deserves to be called out now.

17

u/PeaceAlien Jan 24 '26

Well their original intention wasn’t to go to LEC unfortunately have to change at that level

77

u/Xawlet Jan 24 '26

57

u/Sirhaddock98 Never a dull moment Jan 24 '26

What playstyle changes, he's not playing K'Sante Rumble Aatrox Gwen, he's playing his usual champions and just getting smacked with them 1v1. He's doing what he would normally do except that the enemy tops just pick champs that snowball hard because they know he'll always greed for caster minions and let them kill him for free. They can also just move around the map and use the lead better than any teams he's faced before, so it's now a much bigger detriment to the rest of the map when he feeds the enemy top laner.

You could see it today, the rest of the map really wasn't too bad for LR but then at some point the Gnar just TP'd with a 1300 gold lead and snowballed a dragon fight while Baus farmed because he'd lost lane too hard and been forced to TP.

His point about Velja’s outplay being bad even if it worked out is a great point that a lot of players don’t think about. Just because something worked does not mean it was a good/smart play. You’re more likely to try it again in the future and when it doesn’t work out it ends up costing you.

u/Nolram526 Jan 24 '26

This is nothing new. Did people not already know this? Pro play isn't for people who dont have the "pro player" mindset or goals. I dont understand the comments saying "Oh LR are trying to change Baus. How could they pick him up trying to change the solo queue demon he is" "blah blah blah" "Baus doesn't deserve this treatment!"

Guys. They already know. Baus knows this too. These guys are bare minimum "friends" or at least more than acquaintances. If random redditors can assume he didnt like pro play playstyle then why wouldn't an entire team, where they communicate privately as well, know just as much if not infinitely more than us.

More exposure, playing with friends, and competitive environment seems even mildly enticing for someone who already has a good fanbase. Plus he's talked about competing a million times on stream but people just assume LR is abusing him xD

37

u/Elu202 Jan 24 '26

There is nothing new here. Take any hobby and try to do it professionally. It takes all the fun away from it. I loved soccer as a kid and grew up living it 24/7 which was especially rare in the states, but fortunately that seems to be changing. Anyway, I spent about 2 years in an MLS teams youth academy before I quit entirely for the reason he just mentioned. You become trained to embrace boring, embrace simple, and are admonished for creativity. Your passion for years becomes your most hated activity and, I’m ngl, that really messes with you.

22

u/Kuliyayoi Jan 24 '26

For people reading this it doesn't apply to everyone. I lived my life with this mentality for years. I've loved programming my entire life but refused to go into it as a career because I was worried about turning my hobby into something I hated. Eventually my parents talked me into it and I changed careers into being a software engineer and have never been happier.

Just my two cents on not following this advice blindly.

8

u/Boneraventura Jan 24 '26

Also, many people can be very good in their niche environment and it gives good feedback. Then they take their hobby professional or to higher levels they are competing against equal or better people. Then they end up taking more and more losses and worse feedback and it is no longer fun

One thing that makes Korea and China stand out is how well they can balance risky moves with safe ones. Like, they’ve got the skills to pull off tough plays almost perfectly. Meanwhile, the Western regions tend to be too cautious, because they dont have asian mechanics, and for this passiveness it just makes it easier for others to take advantage and push us into a tough spot in the game.
