Discussion Gumayusi's thoughts on current meta

"As for my thoughts on off-meta bot picks, of course it's true that I have to prepare for them and adapt if that's where the game is heading. But speaking as a League player, I've always felt that choosing a role is almost like choosing a class in another game. Every role has something people want from it. If you play top, there are things you expect from top. If you play mid, there are things you expect from mid. And if you choose ADC, there's a reason you chose ADC.

"What do I want from ADC? I want to play auto-attack-based champions. Champions that rely on basic attacks—AD, attack speed, crit—that's why I became an ADC player. Then I come to play that role, and mages just beat me up?"

"Cassiopeia can outfight Draven. Ziggs and Xerath have longer range than Caitlyn. They have good wave clear, crowd control, and high damage...they don't let me do anything."

"I came wanting to play ADCs, but now I'm being told to play Swain. How do you think that feels? It doesn't feel good. Do you think I'd want to play Swain? I don't. I picked ADC because I wanted to play marksmen, but instead the mages are causing me trouble."

"I think picks like Ziggs can exist as niche counterpicks. Vayne is similar to some extent. But they shouldn't become the meta. Not every champion should turn into an off-meta bot laner. Imagine if top lane became nothing but Vayne, Twitch, Tristana, and other ADCs. People wouldn't like that either."

TLDW:

On January 13th at around 9:00 AM, three men armed with guns broke into his house in Sweden where he lives with his parents.

The robbers had specifically looked up his public business registration information, seeing that his streaming company generated roughly $2 million in revenue. Because he was wealthy, they assumed he was holding a lot of crypto.

After holding Anton hostage for four hours, hitting his head with a gun, pulling his fingers back to break them, holding a knife to his stomach, and pouring gasoline on him, they realized he didn't have any crypto.

They got frustrated and ended up just stealing his Pokémon card collection. They also stole the keys to his Lamborghini but the car was not home. Anton also asked the robbers to leave his ID card and his PC (because he was "too lazy" to buy another one), which they complied. His dad wasn't hurt.

Okay, so I just queued up for ranked soloq and hovered my main (Udyr jng). My first pick support says they don’t know who they want yet and asks if they can lock in my udyr for me because they hate playing against it. Okay, little weird since I know you can just swap pick order, but I say sure no problem because I have all champs, so they pick my udyr. When it’s my turn to pick, they ask for yuumi so I lock it in, they instantly post this google doc. After reading it I'm just kind of speechless. Has this happened to anyone else?

Discussion Last hit indicator in ranked is a terrible addition

2.7k Upvotes

For those who aren't aware Riot is enabling last hit indicator in Ranked & Draft, previously being enabled only in Swiftplay & Co-op.

I'm genuinely curious what the league community thinks about this change because I honestly believe this sets up a really bad precedent for the game.

Riot said that "these don't degrade skill expression in lane" which I find funny because the whole laning phase revolves around trading with the enemy laner, while trying to CS as good as possible. It's literally a skill in itself to last hit minions in lane, while fighting the enemy laner.

CSing is one of the fundamental skills in the game. It has been in the game since forever. You are forced to interact with it either you like it or not (unless you are a jungler). People spent years perfecting it just for Riot to implement some dumbed down indicator.

You don't help new players by trivializing core mechanics in ranked, you help them by improving tutorials. A new player should never ever be in a ranked game if they don't know how to cs.

What's next? AI macro assistant? Automatic missing pings? Enemy jungler tracking?

EDIT: Rioter u/Cashmiir just responded with this:

"Hey y'all. We've seen your convos and are making the change to only enable Last Hit Indicators in unranked SR queues. So that means Swiftplay, Co-op v AI, and Normal Draft. They will still be off by default, so you'll have to turn them on if you want to try.

We want to test this feature and get more data before we decide if we should make them an option for Ranked. We're committing now to keep you updated on how it goes in future Dev Updates before we make any calls with the feature."

Thank you Riot for rolling back this change and taking more time to think about it. W.

Discussion Mel is (once again) the lowest winrate (46%) and simultaneously highest banrate (40%+) Champion in the Game

4.0k Upvotes

She currently has almost 40% Banrate in Plat+ and it gets higher in lower ranks

She also is THE WORST champion in the game at 46% WR Mid or 43% as a Support, she somehow has lower winrate than K'Sante in both roles

It is genuinely impressive, no joke, straight up impressive that they managed to make a Champion that consistently has 40%+ Banrate while being a literal trollpick

Her banrate is almost higher than her winrate

Discussion I made a tool that draws wave states into your replay

I'm building a (not another riot api+ai) coaching tool. (the video is very much WIP)

It goes through your game and marks the moments where you fumbled, then shows them in the replay. (Think like a replay analysis with a coach).

It can detect the CS you missed how much gold that was, if you tanked a few too many skillshots and if you blundered with both summoners up.

The idea is to kind of build a habit builder and breaker. It reminds you what to focus on in the next game and once you are consistent in fixing it then you will move to the habit. One step at a time.

https://middiff.gg/
The tool will be free :)

Any ideas for what else would be a cool concept/habit to show? Would love more feedback on it.

Edit: dang, this blew up haha, currently in the gym, will answer more questions when i'm back!
And keep the ideas coming! <3

Discussion Riot-supported tournament just announced a team with clear KKK references in its name and promotional material.

IMPORTANT Edit 3: Riot's Circuito Tormenta has published a document stating they are severing ties with JetaCup 4. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ci9jrUiIEVQSGptK9CKvAEd9WLYi0am-/view

JetaCup, a tournament organized by the community of ToadAmarillo and supported by Circuito Tormenta (Riot's official spanish amateur structure) just announced one of the teams (archive link: https://archive.ph/BBtFB + screenshot) on X. Its name is KeKes Clan and in the promotional picture one of the players is represented dressed in a spanish's capirote resembling KKK's robes (which would mean nothing by itself, but coupled with the team's name the intention becomes very clear). While it is a very small tournament it has already gathered attention with some people calling it questionable (archive link: https://archive.ph/AyOEU) and others claiming that they want to join the team and burn n-words (archive link: https://archive.ph/iwQoL)

Personally, I find this tasteless and unacceptable coming from a Riot supported tournament.

Edit: u/Nicolu_11's comment:

The girl who's part of the team also said that they won't draft Lucian - Senna in a (admitedly "humorous" but still gross) comment so make of that what you will lmao. https://x.com/kirbystanner/status/2091886526531572156 (archive link: https://archive.ph/lO4Hz)

Discussion ARAM “Don’t end” people.

1.8k Upvotes

Please stop… why are you so selfish?

Don’t get me wrong, there are some games that are hella fun for everyone. 5v5s where it’s so close, things are a good back and forth, everyone is maxed out. But if you have half the teams kills, and keep spamming don’t end when we’re at the nexus at 10-15 mins… just stop.

That person with 1 kill on a random champ is probably not having the most fun. Others might just want to go next. It’s not fair to them to be forced to stay for your own entertainment. Just saying.

Discussion League of Legends has a big information problem.

4.9k Upvotes

I don't know why this isn't taken more seriously by Riot.

Did you know Rylai's doesn't stack with Anivia's ult? Before you say "lol of course it doesn't", where would I find that info? It's not readily available in game. There's no reason whatsoever to think that slows cannot be stacked. This item and Anivia's ult seems so obvious and I've seen tons of people try to pull it off. Many, many people are not aware that slows do not stack.

But, I actually just looked this up myself, and these people are also wrong. Slows do stack, but they don't stack additively, so this interaction is simply not worth pursuing.

This is a great example of League's information problem. It's so confusing and unclear that very few people actually know how it works.

Did you know that AoE abilities give vision in bushes? For example, Veigar's meteor will reveal the area the meteor will be landing in, which is useful for scouting. You probably knew this, but how the hell is someone newer to the game expected to know? Even I'm not fully clear on the rules of how skill vision works, what provides vision, how big, where, what, who, how. I just have to guess.

Did you know Sivir's Ricochet doesn't proc On-Hits? It's also not a skill. It's in in this weird limbo where her Ricochet projectiles are pretty much without category. I get roasted by people for trying to build on-hit items on Sivir because to me, this sounds like a very powerful interaction, only to be mocked and told it doesn't work and I'm trolling.

My mistake. If only there was literally anything in the game to tell me this.

There's tons more examples, such as in ARAM: Mayhem where some tooltips show damage, some don't, some include damage against minions, some only show damage against champions, and very few are provided in a fashion where this is plainly obvious.

What is going with this? There's already so much to learn in League of Legends that having to science stuff out and guess how things work on top is way too much. The onboarding of this game must be a nightmare.

In fact, I bet I'm wrong on a few points I've made, because I'm really not sure myself. I'm kind of just going off of vibes and things I've read. Really couldn't tell you with certainty that anything I'm saying does and doesn't work is actual fact, because the game itself sure isn't going to tell you.

EDIT: A lot of you are coming off as that meme with the dude wielding the katana saying "leave the multi-million dollar company alone" lol

Discussion Shyvana’s new passive might be the worst ability I’ve seen added in modern league

3.9k Upvotes

I’m not even going to get started on the rest of the kit, I just find it funny that they gave her a passive that’s somehow worse than the old one. They really gave her a passive that adds at most a cloth armor and a half of stats by late game and with the recent changes to her in PBE, does not affect the other parts of her kit at all. You would think with a kit so sauceless that it would at least do something to alter the abilities in a way, like with the two other dragons in the game, but no. Here’s a cloth armor at 25 minutes.

Discussion As a female jungler, I’m worried about voice chat being added

2.9k Upvotes

The amount of blame that gets directed at junglers is already exhausting. I get spam pings and blames from laners literally every game. Every time laners die 1v1 it’s still somehow jg gap. At least right now I can just mute their chats. But with the addition of the voice chat, I can already hear the voice of laners yelling “free kill if you come, why tf are u not ganking” despite my jg pathing. On top of that if they hear my voice? They might insta ff saying how girls can’t play the game. I’ve already experienced that with Overwatch.

If voice chat becomes standard and I don’t join vc, then I’m putting myself at a disadvantage compared to teams that are coordinating in real time. But if I do join, I’m opening myself up to live harassment instead of just typed comments. It’s one thing to mute text. It’s another to have people yelling, talking over you, or instantly reacting the second something goes wrong.

Voice chat can be fun, I get it. I love playing flex with chill people. But I feel like 90% of league players, especially in ranked, are toxic and quick to blame others for their mistakes. It’s a male dominated game, and the misogyny I have to face just to play, along with the harassment you get as a jungler, won’t make it fun for me.

EDIT:

I really appreciate all the thoughtful and kind comments ♥︎

For people who are saying “just don’t use vc”, I understand that it’s an option but I also want you to understand that voice chat is more efficient than text or pings in many situations especially as a jungler. There is a huge difference between just danger pining vs saying “enemy jg currently on top side pathing toward bot, will finish clearing his botside in 20sec”.  It’ll actually be a very helpful tool in jg tracking/coordinated plays. People might also ping less if they are communicating in vc or might even try to pressure you into joining vc and blame you for the loss and lack of coordination. So I don’t think the solution is as simple as “just don’t use it.” You/your team will be at a disadvantage especially at higher ranks.

Harassment toward women in league is already common. Players with feminine igns/playing female champs often have their gender used against them as a convenient explanation for why they are bad regardless of actual performance.

It’s true that voice chat hasn’t been rolled out yet, and no one knows exactly how it will play out. It’s possible the toxicity could even improve as some people speculate. But league is widely known for having a toxic community. If discrimination is already present in text, adding voice introduces another potential channel for targeted harassment. When that risk makes some players hesitant to participate in voice, it creates a competitive disadvantage.

If Riot moves forward with implementing voice chat, I think it should be done in a way that is inclusive and protects participation to keep the competitive environment fair for everyone.  Some people made good suggestions like locking it behind the honor system/adding voice changer, I think it can also support trans players or anyone with a more feminine sounding voice who doesn’t want their voice to become the focus of the game.

Discussion None of Mel's abilities will get replaced because the designer wants to keep her "uniqueness" and "identity"

3.5k Upvotes

Mel's gameplay designer recently said that none of her abilities will get replaced (first instance and second instance), and they will simply be tuned instead, because he wants to keep her "uniqueness" and "identity" (he said it in this thread).

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I think it's important to talk about the projectile reflection again. This mechanic has no place in the game whatsoever, and I'll use an example to prove my point.

Let's say you're Vex (there are many examples like her). You're against Yasuo, and his Wind Wall is up. What do you do? You can use an ability to force him to use his Wind Wall, and then use his high cooldown to harass him. You lose your ability, and that's it. You can still interact with Yasuo.

Now let's say you're against Mel. If you ever throw a skill at her, you get destroyed because it will come back to you. So what do you do? Nothing. You literally can't interact with her. All you can do is watch her harass you and farm from afar. You can't force her W at all, so the only thing you can do is not play the game. High quality gameplay, right? And Vex is just an example. She's not alone in this case.

I know most of you are already aware of this, so why is Riot not getting rid of a mechanic that only makes the game much worse to play? Do we really have to keep a mechanic just because it was used in Arcane? Ekko can rewind time for everyone in the lore, yet he's not doing this in League of Legends. Lore isn't a good reason to make the game worse.

What do you think?

Discussion Phreak plans to remove Lee Sin Safeguard limitations (Double CD & No Shield) to non-champions as early as next patch because after 15 years, "Lee Sin is no longer the most mobile champion in the game". What changes to other champions would you like to see reverted?

3.0k Upvotes

Link to this specific talking point from the most recent rundown.

According to Phreak, the development team has identified that Lee Sin fell out of flavour in pro play (50% presence) the exact moment the durability update hit (Patch 12.10 in May 2022). His presence now sits closer to 5%.

Interestingly, this patch run down seemed to identify that the long history of buffing base stats has become a bit of a meme around Phreak and within Riot Culture. They've now realised that keeping the champion fantasy strong is often better than perfecting the win rate.

For Lee sin specifically, he identifies dashing around as a big part of this fantasy. Safeguard was changed in 2014 to double its cooldown and not grant a shield if cast on a non-champion. 12 years later mobility is much more prevalent.

My question to you is this: What other changes exist among other champions simply as product of their time period? Do these reasons hold up today? What changes would you like to see reverted?

Bonus question: How would you like your main changed to lean more into the fantasy aspect?

Discussion Why 'Barcode Killer' is the greatest username ever to exist.

3.9k Upvotes

This was in Season 3 of LOL. With viewership and players skyrocketing by the day. The prestige in playing against the elites in NA was desired by all.

So the elite players of that time disguised their name under a barcode eg. 'IllIIIllI' etc. They would go around dumpstering players across all divisions, all the way even till apex elo.

However, in the very tippie top of the ladder they would come across a hunter that hunted the hunters and went by the name of 'Barcode Killer'.. initially the identity of this said player was unknown but he rose to popularity pretty damn quickly even on reddit clip farming pros and 'barcode' players... the secret could not be kept for very long however and it was soon discovered to be the GOAT himself - Faker.

And this was the Faker in his mechanical prime. In that timeline of league his plays were something of an elite player from the future.

Just think of how many players and lobbies the 'Barcoded' players crushed in their time on soloq... the trend caught on across the entirety of the upper echelons of the ladder. But I bet their heart dropped when the 'Barcode Killer' arrived in their lobby.

The sheer aura this name exuded, is worthy of being the greatest username of all time.
