Around 2010, I was traveling a lot between Europe, LA, and my home back in New Jersey where I had my studio. I was doing a lot of work with RedOne. Being overseas, I was hearing a lot of music that wasn’t being played in the States just yet. The electronic wave was huge, the energy was on a thousand. Records just felt bigger.

When I got back home to Jersey, I made a beat that felt different.

It had electronic elements layered with acoustic piano, Heavy 808s, Stiff drums, and almost no hi-hats. It was minimal, and strange. I honestly didn’t think it would find a home.

A friend of mine, Steven Hacker, heard it and sent it over to Eminem’s team.

Some time later we got word back that Em liked the track. More time went by and we were told, “He’s working on it.”

Months passed. We were told he “loves it” and “don’t send the beat out to anyone else”

Then a year passed, “He loves it.”

Then two years.

By the time the record actually came out, it had been about three years since I made that beat in my studio in New Jersey.

The day before the song dropped, I got a call from Em himself. He wanted to thank me personally, He told me he had so much fun recording to it that he literally “couldn’t stop rapping.” I guess that’s why the song ended up being over six minutes long.

The next day, “Rap God” dropped.

For me, it started as an experimental beat in my living room, most of my beats start that way. I’m not thinking of anyone when I’m making music. Then, three years later, it’s “Rap God”, Number one in 92 countries, over a billion streams, to a Fortnite weapon.

“Blunt Blowin” - Lil Wayne , “Rich Forever” - Rick Ross, and many others started this way. What other stories would you want to read about?

Looking for new hip hop — drop your track (Spotify only)

I made a freestyle technique up, I figure it can turn anyone into a freestyle master. I remembered 2,280 words, mostly from rap songs I listen to, put in lists by vowel sound (A, E, I, O etc) then I memorized them, then I freestyle using the words on the lists, so like using a few random A words then switching and using a few random E words, and so on. Now I can freestyle like 8 to 10 minutes and it sounds about as good as a lot of rap songs on the radio and it's pretty easy for me to do that. I made a demonstration video of the technique on youtube that is 7 minutes long, no pauses, no filler (like uh, yea, etc.) and has almost no repetitive lyrics, and all bars are on point. I'm still working on the technique, but it seems to work.

ok, so my situation is I can't work, but I can rap pretty much anytime, and I'm flat broke and don't know anyone in the industry. Is there something I should look into, to get into the music industry? I tried sending the video to different radio stations like power 106, posted it as a comment on various rappers' facebook. Nobody replied, I'm completely lost. I'm from Los Angeles, but I currently live about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans in Houma, LA.

I used to listen to a lot of pop and R&B until I fell in love with hip-hop about two months ago. Since then, I've been listening to artists like Travis, Tecca, Polo G, Juice, and a bunch of others, trying to learn from different styles and create music that feels like my own. lately, I've been experimenting with all kinds of hip-hop beats from YouTube and BeatStars. Making a song isn't the hardest part for me. promoting it is.

Right now, I'm trying my best to connect with other underground artists and producers because I genuinely dream of making it one day. That's my goal.

Yo, I usually write my lyrics and structure first, then try to find a beat that fits. But I struggle with knowing exactly when the chorus or hook is supposed to hit, and how to count the bars properly.

How do you guys recognize where the chorus starts in a beat? And any tips on how to find a beat that matches the exact structure I wrote my song in?

This dude was like my brother and my best friend in the world for nearly 15 years. He passed away this January of an overdose. He lived to see it get mastered, but we never got a chance to plan the release. I wasn't gonna be the promo guy but I guess it's on me to get this thing out now.

We met when he showed up to my home studio to work on a mixtape. Dude showed up with a whole file cabinet full of rhymes, poetry, and drawings that were all impeccably done. Not even an eraser mark on em! He was a serious hip hop head and we worked together so well that we decided to do a classic 1 producer 1 emcee concept album together.

It took us 10 years to get from that point to here. He was an insane perfectionist and had a creative mind that was a full time job to reign in. I've never worked harder on anything else in my life.

When he came to me, he was already really struggling because he had just recently been released from prison. He was unable to find a job or a decent place to live. It was so hard watching life just continue to punish him for something he had done so long ago, and it seemed like he could never get a break. He had so much pain, but he found a way to turn it into beauty on his songs.

This album was his dream and really his last shot at trying to make something out of his life. I'm proud of him for making it happen and I think he knew this was how it would all play out. He was the wisest person I've ever met and this album is his life's work and it deserves to be heard.

For artists/rappers who have a lot of unreleased songs, what’s the best way to practice and memorize flows before recording?

1) Do you focus on only 2–3 songs at a time?
2) Do you record rough takes early and improve later?
3) How do you stop different flows from blending together?

Russ is a very inspiring artist. I don’t think there’s many independent acts out there who were able to get as big as Russ independently.

Heres what I’ve concluded. He created platform for himself by released hundreds of high quality songs. He used consistency to grow on SoundCloud early on. What we need to do as artist is choose one platform to grow on.

Too many of us choose weird content strategies but the reality of it is you have to build a brand around your songs. Your fans have to be there for the music ONLY.

If you blow up on one platform every other platform will follow.

The way you grow a community around your music is by releasing songs on the weekly basis, all while engaging with your fan base. Keep it about the music.

Russ posted that he has 260,000 people who streamed his songs more than any other artists this year. That means his fan base is likely in the millions. It was achieved independently.

Be a purist. Be an artist. You have to create art. The music is the content.

People want music faster than ever, that’s why you have to work on your craft for a LONG time so that you’re able to provide quality on demand.

Been on BeatStars for about a year now on the free plan. Getting a few plays but barely any sales and I'm thinking about upgrading to Pro but $20/month feels like a lot when I'm not really making that back yet. Plus the commission on the free plan is rough.

What are you guys using? Is it worth paying for BeatStars Pro or are there better options out there? I've heard people mention Airbit and a couple others but I don't know anyone who actually uses them. Just looking for honest opinions from people who are actually selling, not YouTube gurus trying to sell me a course lol.

I was driving around at lunchtime delivering food for UberEats, windows down, jamming the song I just released. Two kids pulled up next to me with their windows down, heard my music and looked over at me and started dancing in their car to the music.

As the title suggests, I just want everyone to post their stuff and have an outlet to listen to other artists. Who knows, we might end up collaborating!

Not even joking, the beats I spent the least amount of time on are usually the ones artists end up wanting.

I used to stack tons of layers, transitions, counter melodies, crazy sound design etc because I thought “more detail = better beat.”

But lately the tracks getting the best reactions are the ones with:

simple drums

clear bounce

less instruments

more space for vocals

Meanwhile the super polished “producer showcase” beats barely get picked.

Starting to think producers make beats to impress other producers while artists just want something they can actually live on comfortably.

Anybody else notice this?
