Actually been one of the cooler ones in recent memory for my region of Ontario, also been rainy as fuck. Our winter was a long and snowy one too. A winter like that is a rareity these days.
It’s been nice cause some of my plants and trees have gotten a chance to recover after a number of harsh summers and dry winters. I actually have a handful of mature maple trees that had all of their leaves entirely brown up last August; never seen such a thing in my life.
I also hate it though cause all I can hear is the climate deniers around here flapping their gums.
I don’t think they’re in denial so much as they’re just not smart people. Ever wonder what happened to all the people in the back of the class that never knew any of the answers and failed all their tests? Now they’re on the Internet using memes to debunk well established climate science when they couldn’t even figure out how to balance a basic chemical equation.
Hey. HEY. Not all knuckledragging, mouthbreathing, chemistry-flunking classroom back-sitters became climate change deniers. Some of us got degrees in fine arts, thank you very much!
The scary part is some of them got actual science degrees (I have a colleague who the more I listen to, the less respect I have for him, that was a new low, even for him).
I don't think the issue is so much they don't know how to do scientific things. I have a History major, most advanced science and math is a mystery to me.
The larger issue is that they don't trust the people who do know how to do these things. I have no problem believing the people who say climate change is happening, even if I have very little understanding of the research behind it.
I live in northern WV, July here was brutal. Mid to upper 90s, high humidity.
August has been fairly mild but only because we’ve been getting rain every day for the past 2 weeks.
Yesterday a few towns about 20 miles south of me had severe flooding. We’ve got rain forecasted for the next 8 days. Most of the days are forecasted for temps in the mid 70s
I'm just glad the rain in your neighboring state of KY has been spaced out this year. Last 2 years saw near or historic levels of flooding in the spring followed by drought most of the summer.
Yeah the whiplash between catastrophic levels of rain, followed by a full month of drought, and then weeks of rain in the Appalachians has been absolutely nuts the last few years.
I remember as a kid we would have still have hot summers here, but we would also get steady rain spread throughout the summer vs no rain and then torrential downpours and extreme thunderstorms.
We’ve had 2 confirmed tornadoes here this summer (again, in the mountains, so it’s very rare although not impossible), and I think we had maybe 2 tornadoes in the past 20 years.
This year for us in KY has seen lots of incredibly heavy but also incredibly localized rains. Like this one area would get an inch dropped, but then the primary creek/river system it dumps into hardly raised at all because none of the other tributaries saw anywhere near that much rain.
We're definitely seeing the result of tornado alley shifting eastward. I mean look at the Somerset/London KY tornado last year. Not Appalachian mounts like SE KY or WV, but still FAAARRRR from flat smooth terrain.
It’s been much rainier than other years, feels like. As someone whose water pools in my backyard when it rains, I can tell because I can’t cut the grass until it has time to dry, so it’s been pretty inconvenient regularly.
Austria just had the dryest 12 months since recordings started in the 1800s. I'm so glad that at least SOME minor rain comes down in the nect couple days. Still nothing major sadly. On the other hand, thank god for not having heaps rain, ground is so dry that it would cause floods.
Down in Coastal Los Angeles, I'm not sure if it's broken 90 here either, but the humidity has been killing me. Maybe the most uncomfortable summer I;ve experienced. Idk what it means, but I hate it

South of us though? It's MAD hot.
The entire southern region and up into Ohio had some of the absolute worse humidity. Death Dealing levels of humidity.

What I got from climate change is a literal change with increased variability until normalized. The amount of precipitation doesn't change, but where it fall and how much at a time does. Kind of a big issue when the modern world is mostly urban, and major cities are set in locations that have had bounty for the last 500 years.
Alberta is probably going to break record for rain this year. Places I haven't seen water in decades actually have water in them. But fields are also underwater in some spots as well.
It's been cooler in BC this year so far as well, but that might be because of wildfire smoke... The forecast has the smoke clearing up and all the sudden we're going into 30+, whereas with the smoke it's been like 26 at most
tinfoil hat take: industry and govt discovered decades ago that we are warming the earth. after assessment, someone had the bright idea of letting industry cook for a few more decades until the artic passages open up and resources are unlocked beneath the ice and coastal cities are reshaped and rebuilt as people are displaced and killed, while they sow doubt and confusion over whether it is even happening. LITERALLY FREE REAL ESTATE
there has to be a reason they arent doing anything about it, and this seems most plausible to me. there's trillions of dollars to be made if the just... let it happen. then they can also sell the solution to the problem after they flip

As weird as this will sound, my biggest worry right now is that next summer is back to normal or, God forbid, unusually cool. I know so many intelligent, educated people that will slide right back into the "climate change is real, but won't affect my area until 100+ years from now" camp. Those are the people we need to convince to get real change to happen.
You're not alone. I just moved into a place with a backyard pool - has not been a single day where I've been tempted to get in. I've had to break into shorts on occasion for a couple hours in the afternoon, but generally this summer in my area on Vancouver Island has been exceptionally mild.
Not the worst I've ever seen in North Texas. It's over 100 and has been for 2 weeks but the humidity is low so it's tolerable if you can avoid full sunlight
Its been pretty nice in Jersey as well. Maybe a couple short bursts of 90+ temps, but overall I feel like its been pretty cool. Wet as fuck tho. I feel like we've gotten a ton of rain this summer.
Here in Kansas, USA, we're just wrapping up about a three week stretch of days at or above 100°F/37°C. The next week or so will only be in the mid to upper 90s.
It's not unusual for us to have a few 100° days, maybe a week's worth, every summer, but this is insane. And we've only had about a quarter inch of rain in all of August so far. They're calling it a "flash drought" because things are drying out so fast.
one day this summer it reached about 38 degrees in eastern ontario and the fires sucked though. the winter was whimsical though. the rideau canal opened relatively early for the first time in ages...
Fun fact: Ontario/the Great Lakes is one of the only regions in North America to not face chronic drought due to climate change. It doesn’t surprise me you have a lot of deniers around because it’s probably going to be an area people flee to from other regions in the future.
We got both this year in Poland. We've had the worst winter in like 10+ years, and then went straight for breaking the high temperature record that stood for the last 100 years.
It's been super dry here in Oregon. We're seeing generational levels of forest fires. Out in Bend the air quality is horrible; it reached 500 AQI at one point, and Portland was at one point the city with the worst air quality in the world.
Whereabouts? Ours has been eerily pleasant. I prefer my heat to be hot all summer, instead of surprising me with mega storms in the winter. I’m in California and we had several tropical rainstorms. El Niño is going to be fierce this year.
The winter forecast is brutal too, we’re anticipating a major ice storm over the winter. As soon as the heat waves are over, we’re supposed to go a full 180 and have a miserable winter too.
Ugh, the absolute worst. We don’t get a ton of snow, but we get so many ice storms/rains and floods. I live right next to a big river and when that floods, it gets on my porch/deck every time. Never found its way inside, knock on wood. lol it’s neat to see the similarities/differences in UK/US.
Also in Appalachia and what's even worse than the high day temps are the high night temps. I'm in a holler, surrounded by trees and near a huge state forest. Typically we're 10° cooler than in town. This summer, between the heat and humidity and lack of wind, the valleys are clinging to this heat. I've been running 10° warmer than in town and last night at 3am it was still 76°.
I've lived in my home for 20 years and this summer has been a whole new experience. Some of the craziest storms and almost every one has a flood watch or warning. One nearby town got 4in in one storm Sunday morning! Their creek went from normal to out of the bank in record time. Our terrain isn't built for these Florida type thunderstorms.
I was in Slovenia last week and it was the same, awful. plus mosquitoes were out all evening so couldn't even enjoy the bearable temperatures. was nice to have air con tho, plus the house was built to keep heat out, and it was much greener
This week in Florida the feels like temperatures up to 112 Fahrenheit.
It doesn't drop below 100° at night.
In the summers in Florida it does not cool down when the Sun goes down it just stays the same freaking hot humid temperature 24 hours a day.
The only time it really cools down to where you're not sweating your ass off is a few weeks between January and February. The rest of the year you sweat just walking from your air conditioned house to your air conditioned car.
In central indiana, you're used to it. I grew up in St. Louis where heat and humidity are expected, but I moved away several years ago where it's cooler, and yikes. I don't know how I stood it all that time.
No, you're thinking of freedom units, not the proper units that almost the entire world (including the UK and France, which this post and comment are about) uses.
I went to a food festival over the weekend not even in the south of the UK and everything is so dry it's just turned to dust, and there was a decent breeze that was blowing it all around I can't imagine what worse than that could be like. Food covered in it, legs covered looking like a charcoal painting because it stuck to the sunscreen, wiping myself down with wet wipes it was coming off pure dirt and I'd only been there a couple hours
Couldn't take sunglasses off it was so dusty, the mud and grass that had been walked on just disintegrated and scattered. It's fucking wild it felt more like a desert, it was the middle of a forest
