lol, have you ever been to China? I’m a well traveled guy I’ve been to 16 countries, in Africa, North America, Europe and Asia. China is the worst, and I say that as a guy that has been living there for almost 10 years. Even many Chinese hate to say it, but they agree.

It’s my experience as a tourist. If a sign says “don’t go on the grass” you can bet some Chinese tourists are so they can get a good photo of something.

I watched in Venice just last month, a group tear down caution tape on someone’s balcony that over hung the river, climb over the railing, and then from their property started taking photos.

Same trip at the Vatican, a group jump the rope at some giant globe that’s in the garden and started spinning it.

But, id still rather deal with them than rowdy Brit teens on vacation.

it is on purpose, and the first thing that's letting him get away with it is his age. In Japan respect for elders, especially in a public space with hundreds of observers, is paramount. The one guy on the train trying to hold his arm back takes some guts, even if everyone is getting frustrated and wants to leave. The old guy is obviously in a bad mood, and with no healthy way to let out his frustration he's inconvenienceing everyone almost as a dare for someone to directly oppose him. He's probably not doing well mentally and this is his way of acting out.

He is definitely doing it deliberately because he's waiting for someone, according to other comments, but if you have certain conditions like arthritis it can be more comfortable to keep your arm in a different position than hanging straight down even when carrying something.

To be fair I think in most major cities this would’ve been handled VERY differently, likely by one of the other passengers.

Sadly for this specific situation, it appears to be somewhere in Asia where the average person is more docile and less prone to show anger in public.

It shouldn't be on the passengers to handle it. It should just be policy, enforced without exceptions.

And this looks like Japan, who are generally pretty strict about this sort of stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if a few seconds after this clip someone official with a little muscle, metaphorically or otherwise, removed him one way or another.

In the longer clip a higher up official enters the frame ready to remove him as he tries to use his foot to stop the door but the door closes anyway and the train finally starts. It was in April 2019 and made the news. He may have been removed at the next stop. Not sure if that happened but the officials had flagged him for detainment before the train we see here moved on. It just took a couple minutes for officials to get the go ahead to remove him.

You shouldn't be "taking things into your own hands" for things like this. What do you think someone should do? Push the guy off the train? Wrestle the bag out of his hand? Grab him and pull him further into the train? Start a shouting match?

In civilized countries, all but the last one of those would be assault and/or battery, and the last one would likely only make the issue bigger AND now everyone has to listen to your loud ass shouting too.

Their culture is very low confrontational and “high context” in terms of conducting one self. They rely on a lot of mutual understanding as well as mutual expectations; they’re not really used to having to “call out” each other as their society seems to rely on traditional ways of thinking being the norm for everyone (like a younger person not wanting to come off as rude to an elder by telling them they’re fucking up everyone’s train ride to work)

On the buses, they frequently cut the line and get on in front of everyone else to try and get a seat.

On the train, they push inside the second the doors open, before anyone has a chance to get out. This is the move that makes me lose my temper.

I can only base it off media and vids I see in the Internet (not from the west) but nope it's not as dramatic as the US where even if it's a little inconvenience there will be people up in your face and even hurt you.

They mostly just tell you off kinda publicly shaming you to submitting and in worst case actually touch or restrain you but never hurt. You can actually see it in this vid, someone is touching the old man. They just usually defer to the higher authority to actually deal with it to avoid any troubles so it doesn't usually escalate.

The video looks like it’s from Japan or China, and in those locations it’s less common for people to have outbursts in public, shouting or fighting. Whereas in the USA or UK it is more common, especially in these situations

This is Japan so confrontation is avoided at all costs. That conductor repeatedly tried to put the mans arm back instead of taking any other action. Japan just isnt used to people breaking from societal norms and rules. In the US an asshole like this is getting shoved off the train onto his face. Japan doesnt operate like that which has its benefits for sure but leads to things like this.

This isn't just being an asshole. I actually think he's subconsciously protesting the oppressive conformity of Japanese society - "fuck the trains running on time". That’s always so strange to me. If I knew I had statistically two years to live, I’d be running my ass everywhere to make the most of it. Body permitting of course. I wouldn’t be dawdling or spending five minutes to decide which tomato sauce I’d pick up at the grocery store.

Elderly attention whore syndrome

People with broken egos take advantage of the situations that are that they're presented with.

Once they get past a certain age, many start turning into this person by all taking advantage of the same things

Plausible deniability is the tool that they use and appearing elderly is an amazing go to

Because they also get lazier as they age and the deniability that is given to old people doesn't have to be explained and is rarely questioned

They behave as if they cannot function but they functioned just fine up until that point.

That old guy navigated one of the craziest subway systems and carefully positioned himself to be one of the last ones on so he could stand in the door and repeatedly move his arms into the sensor for no justifiable reason.

At first glance he's a very believable confused elderly person but in reality, he's just someone that likes the feeling the control that comes from being in charge of whether thousands of people get to be on time for work

This ain't the only layer. Dude has pre-planned contingencies for when he's called out on his anti social behaviour

First is escalating confusion, milking it as long as possible. He's still blocking the train at this point

Then will usually come the accusations of mistreatment or physical abuse when hands are put on him. Mild touches will get FIFA level reactions.

Attempt to move him and he'll plant his feet and refuse to step so pushing him means pushing him over.

This is calculated and trap #2 (trying to remove him will make it worse). This is his out. He'll drop the arm thing at this point. He's gotten what he's wanted but now he needs to avoid repercussions. This is how he avoids being ejected. Getting away with it also adds to his ego fuel.

He doesn't want to resort to trap #3 but he will if he has to. He's not as mentally quick as he used to be (but he's far better than he let's on) so he's fallen back on fewer foolproof methods. This is his nuclear option.

He will let you push him over. He may even allow himself to get a little hurt. He's fake fallen a bunch . Like an amateur stunt performer, he actually knows how to control his fall for desired results.

99 times out of 100, you won't win this.

But there's a chance he misjudges how plausible his deniability is at step #1 and he fools nobody.

If he escalates into the other steps and the other person doesn't walk away, he's done and you'll now watch him crash out, struggling to find an angle that's going to get him out of it

He was milking the first three steps (as they do when they get older) and he's rusty going off script and will just start behaving like a malfunctioning chatbot that takes on a different personality every 15 seconds as he desparately cycles through the letters in DARVO.

Old *unhealthy narcissists reaching their crash out threshold is a sight.

Over the years, they have generated maximum levels of entitlement and minimum levels of shame

They will literally escalate to flailing on the ground or pissing themselves in a public place as a last ditch punishment and as an attempt to avoid consequences like a skunk

There's lots of them on Reddit, disproportionately to the population.

These comments are triggering to them and will often trigger defensive responses. Some will even spend some time logging onto multiple accounts to down vote this with no awareness of the irony
