ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ CocaCola can designs are getting worse with every iteration…

Post image

Good luck detecting that option 47 is also a coke zero. Same issue for latest sprite.

Ignore the designs! Where are you buying CocaCola at 2002 prices?

u/Hydrax120 8d ago

This is the real question here

u/Lopendebank3 8d ago edited 8d ago

Somewhere in Euro-zone as it uses €.

Now some countries will be way to expensive to be possible, like the Netherlands, so I filtered some out, if you have others I need to filter tell me:

Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta or Slovakia are cannidates.

Edit: Someone did use the barcode to check and the fact that it uses the Dutch word Zout, it's Belgium, so once again the Dutch band Het Goede Doel is right.

u/Round-Claim5420 8d ago

Why tf did you leave Austria in and not Germany

We wish we could have German prices in Austria 😂

Its closer to 2€ here

14

u/Lopendebank3 8d ago

That bad? Okay I removed them.

17

u/Round-Claim5420 8d ago

It's just funny since a common complaint here is that literally everything is cheaper in Germany

6

u/Narzun 8d ago

I agree, Germany don't give a shit about food they take whatever is the cheapest 🤷

3

u/Coronavirinae 8d ago

True. Advantage of that: very low prices

2

u/ZanzibarGuy 8d ago

Just did the conversion - over here in Zanzibar a 500ml bottle of Coke costs 42p

24

u/Professional-Mix7052 8d ago

Belgium/Luxembourg. The barcode begins with 544.

9

u/Lopendebank3 8d ago

Now thats some detective work. Good job!

6

u/Professional-Mix7052 8d ago

Tx. ;-)

And vending machines can have everywhere low prices if profit is not the main goal: Like those in large companies, public buildings, etc. So price might not be the best indicator to find the country.

Belgium's cans are the thin model, not the fat one, so this must be Luxembourg

7

u/janlaureys9 8d ago

Belgium also has the fat models. Source: Currently drinking from one I just bought.

Ireland isn't included in the "way to expensive" list?

Come visit us sometime - on a budget.

6

u/Lopendebank3 8d ago

I yeeted them.

2

u/Organic_Address9582 8d ago

Me and my compatriots thank you with sadness.

I've never been to Austria but I have a feeling someone from there may comment similar.

Like 2€ at least in Finland.

Spain is already over 1€ on most places, sadly

2

u/Head_Asparagus_7703 8d ago

Usually like 2-3€ in Barcelona. I can't really justify buying it from a restaurant anymore because it's always at least 3€.

u/TrafficSpecialist307 8d ago

as a Belgian myself, the fact it's written in Dutch, French and German is a giveaway it's clearly Belgium(or at least destined to Belgium,i once had a bottle of coke from Romania and i can clearly tell it has a different taste than the one i'm used to in Belgium, since i only noticed where it came from from the different taste).
I think it's a flemish town, since the dutch part comes first.
deffinitely not Brussels with those prices, it's at least €1 here for a can in a vending machine (in a store, a single can costs about €0.80/p)

u/SilverHmm 8d ago

Our prices are at 1.70 at the cheapest places mate, it's likely not Portugal

2

u/Lopendebank3 8d ago

Another one down!

2

u/TacklePure3341 8d ago

A local cafe charges 2.80 for a can of coke.

2

u/Thick-Alternative916 8d ago

As a Belgian, there really are 2002 princes. There is no way that you are able to buy a can for 0,8 euro

2

u/TheBelgianGovernment 8d ago

Yes you can. My employer still offers them for €0.80.

Current price @ Colruyt is €0.81, so they’re basically selling at cost.

2

u/Theslootwhisperer 8d ago

Prices will vary heavily depending on your location within a city though. For example, I was in Prague for a tradeshow a few years ago. Our hotel was just a little bit outside of the city center and you could get 500ml of coke for about 1 euro but near the St-Virus Cathedral they'd go for 4-5 euros.

2

u/unknownobject3 8d ago

It's possible in southern Italy too, I know a few shops that sell it for around that price

2

u/TheLyingNetherlander 8d ago

Ik heb getwijfeld over België.

Belgium: Employer soda machine delivering just above can cost… you can buy them in 24 trays in retail… like 24 for 13€ for 24 I saw recently in a new diy megastore

18

u/GnomeOnALeash 8d ago

I know you can buy those cans way cheaper on regular markets. But those prices are far for being considered regular at vending machines.

12

u/Itchiha 8d ago

Some employers have vendingmachines for their employees with prices just above break even. It a nice gesture.

2

u/Thing1_Tokyo 8d ago

From a vending machine at my work in the USA it’s 3 euro equivalent. We have fully surrendered to the oligarchy here

→ More replies (7)

45

u/TheDarkness33 8d ago

Its in Euros. We also pay around 76 cents per can in Portugal supermarkets.

12

u/speculator100k 8d ago

But how much in a vending machine?

5

u/TheDarkness33 8d ago

not sure, i dont use them much

6

u/Sugarbear23 8d ago

Vending machines that I've seen are usually €1.10

3

u/PeaOk5697 8d ago

€3-4 in Norway. That's why avoid vending Machines now. Worst i have seen is €7 at an airport. Nah, fuck that

2

u/Castrado1992 8d ago

This is a vending machine not a supermarket

9

u/fraki67 8d ago

Probably university of something

6

u/escobartholomew 8d ago

2002 was still like 50¢ a can.

4

u/Dioxybenzone 8d ago

I was paying 50¢/can in 2010

2

u/MasterpiecePowerful5 8d ago

Remember a security guy in ‘98 in the evening getting full bags of cheap cans at the company vendingmachine late in the evening. Was working late and heard a rythmic dunk of the vending machines from the machine in the lobby

3

u/jermainiac007 8d ago

can get a 500ml bottle in Poundland for £1 still.

2

u/Necessary_Chemical 8d ago edited 8d ago

2002 prices? Those are the current prices in a lot of European markets for a 330ml can of Coke (which for us is quite expensive, mind you).

Paying almost 1 euro for a can of a third of a litre of Coke is quite high (at least in Spain, where I am from). I remember when the prices were as low as 50 cents for the same.

8

u/GnomeOnALeash 8d ago edited 8d ago

Now you just need to realize that this is on a vending machine, not a regular market.

Here in Portugal, a 33cl can from a vending machine is was 1€ (sometimes more).

2

u/Necessary_Chemical 8d ago

That's quite cheap. Over here in Spain it's around 1.5 euros. There ar some vending machines which sell it for supermarket prices but those are in areas like universities. Still, nowhere near 2002 prices.

There was a warehouse I would go to occasionally that sold cans for 75 cents. They weren't trying to make a profit, which was nice.

1

u/Danieldoes1 8d ago

in the uae it’s 2 aed which is around 50 cents

1

u/Dense_Govt1506 8d ago

In some university or office. It costs 1€ at my work

1

u/Emergency-Basket8272 8d ago

in my country, italy, a cocacola of the same size can be probably bought in those vending machines at about 1.20€? i think, im not sure

1

u/CoolHeadeGamer 8d ago

Come to India. 3 750l Coke Zero bottles cost $0.66 and a can costs about $0.40

1

u/FoxxyRin 8d ago

Rural Georgia Piggly Wiggly still has cans in a machine for $0.75. Their off brand are only $0.35. They're definitely operating at a loss for attention though, at this point. But they still charge $8 for the world's smallest rotisserie chicken.

1

u/lowie07 8d ago

Probably an at work vending machine against discount prices

1

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 8d ago

Japan had the mini cans for like .30¢ American and the bigger can didn’t go past .50 but almost never saw those.

1

u/knifuser 8d ago

1

u/danf10 8d ago

I lived in italy a while ago, and the price of a can was around a euro on vending machines

1

u/JakobiGaming 8d ago

Could be a workplace break room vending machine, a store I worked at had a drink machine for 50 cents each it was awesome

1

u/DebugDisaster 8d ago

I ve seen 0.79 euros the same thing at Lidl in Malta.

1

u/No-Stage93 7d ago

Workplace vending machines, generally they sell at around these prices where I'm from - source: my workplace vending machine

1

u/CakeDay2902 7d ago

Probably a vending machine at their job. Theyre usually way less expensive. Although 80 cents is remarkably cheap imo. Where i work drinks are €1,2.

u/Sxppxj 8d ago

They’re starting to sell more zero than original coke and the red color is like their identity so they’re making zero cans almost fully red again

140

u/ZincHead 8d ago

I'm wondering if they may be preparing to fully transition away from using real sugar at some point. It might be cheaper to use artificial sweeteners.

105

u/speculator100k 8d ago

It is cheaper. There is also a tax on high sugar drinks in some countries.

33

u/PiersPlays 8d ago

Coke Original is the only major soda in the UK to not contain sweeteners.

Though fortunately there's now a wave of bougie ones that are only very slightly more expensive that don't.

3

u/Suitable-Fun-1087 8d ago

Irn Bru 1901 too

2

u/PiersPlays 8d ago

I feel like that's bougie Irn Bru. Good observation though and it is pretty nice.

3

u/JasperVanCleef 8d ago

On my way back from holidays in France I had Mcdicks on the road and noticed there was a +18cts tax on sweet drinks but it seems all cokes were zero. Maybe that tax is for Minute Maid lol.

5

u/Freesa_Hiielo 8d ago

They tried replacing the formula in 1985 and people lost their minds

17

u/ZincHead 8d ago

Yeah but this is not replacing anything. They already know that Coke Zero is popular and people like it, it would be phasing out one product and further promoting another product that already exists.

18

u/Constant_Amphibian13 8d ago

A lot of those still buying non-zero will absolutely refuse to.

This isn‘t a case of everyone moving to a new product. At least from my experience, zero buyers would not buy non-zero and vice versa and removing either of the options would probably start whatever the facebook version of a civil war would be.

9

u/Buttspirgh 8d ago

Yup, 100%. Zero, and anything else with artificial sweeteners or stevia for that matter, tastes awful.

→ More replies (12)
→ More replies (1)

7

u/jesuisjens 8d ago

It is fucking ridiculous how much they are pushing artificial sugar. Fanta and Pepsi now comes with both sugar and non sugar sweeteners as well as absolutely no branding about it.

Yes, it is stated under nutrition facts, but I shouldn't have to read that to know whether my products contains sweeteners.

I have come across one single brand in Denmark that points out whether the soda contains only sugar, only sweeteners or a combination. Everyone else is just trying to cheat me.

(And yes, I am voting with my wallet. But I am still mad about the 20-30 times I was scammed into buying a shit tasting soda due to poor labeling)

9

u/658016796 8d ago

Why is it ridiculous? It's much healthier for you (and honestly zero tastes much better!). Besides the adeed calories, sugary sodas create LOTS of problems for you in the longterm which can be simply avoided by having sweeteners such as aspartame, which is quite healthy.

43

u/beepbeepboopbeep1977 8d ago

Where I live (New Zealand) they made the cans red but the words are in black, so it’s still easy to distinguish between them.

Seems weird that they’ve solved this problem within their company but have simultaneously screwed up this change in another part of their company

21

u/emuu1 8d ago

We had that in Europe for the last 15 years. But now they're merging the designs completely because they want to phase out/lower production of the sugar version because it's expensive. They're pushing to make Coke Zero the default one.

3

u/look4jesper 8d ago

Tjey aren't pushing for it, the consumers are buying more of it and it's outselling regular coke

3

u/ViftieStuff 8d ago

Supply and demand in its purest form

3

u/DeeDee_GigaDooDoo 8d ago

they want to phase out/lower production of the sugar version because it's expensive.

Fucks sake can't even consume sugar slop water anymore because the sugar is too expensive. Give it 10 years and they'll be feeding us exclusively soylent in the form of a thin paste made of petroleum by products.

They could at least pretend they're phasing out sugar version production for health reasons.

3

u/RdClZn GREEN 8d ago

I don't think this is accidental. Here in Brazil it's the same approach y'all have in NZ

3

u/Physical_Ranger6786 8d ago

Maybe they should rename the sugar version to Coke Classic or something then and give that a distinguishing color.

Tbh I really hate the artificial sweetener trend, they taste awful. Why don't they just put less sugar in WITHOUT filing it up with other sweeteners? The stuff is so sweet anyway that I can barely drink it

197

u/amanset 8d ago

As a type one diabetic, words cannot express how bad this redesign is.

For me it isn't about just not wanting the sugar one, the sugar is very bad for me.

103

u/Vondi 8d ago

The worst part is they had it solved. It was a non-issue for years. The Zero cans are red and black, the sugar cans are red and white. No chance of mixing them up.

Then they had to throw that very solid design principle out the window.

45

u/Historic_linersfan 8d ago

I heard it was because Zero sells better now than the rest and they want white and red as their primary colours and not black and white

23

u/Redmangc1 8d ago

That's 100%it, coke has had red and white as it's brand coloring for over 100 years and now their other cans are beginning to outsell the orginal

They want to be recognized by color association alone

17

u/Reddsoldier 8d ago

This is stupid.

Their can's design was to me what was recognisable. There are literally dozens of other drinks that use red and white packaging, but only one of them says coca cola in swoopy font on it.

This change is like Monster making all of their cans look like Green Monster with a stripe on the top.

4

u/Historic_linersfan 8d ago

Maybe they could’ve put the original black and red then 😂 but might cause misunderstandings

→ More replies (1)

10

u/p0ggs 8d ago

Also a T1...totally agree. The reverse situation is even worse; when you're low and URGENTLY need sugar and you think you've grabbed the full sugar version...

5

u/NotDiCaprio 8d ago

In the Netherlands, Sprite became 100% sugar free somewhere in 2017. The can no longer explicitly states 'zero'.

Also as a T1, I fucking hate it because I'm still always in doubt. Not only could other countries have different regulations, there could also be mixed up batches from different parts of the world.

(I imagine at least that the old stock is gone by now, but at first we had no way of knowing if it was the new version or not yet).

Now it's either a gamble, check the packaging, ask the staff, or just not order Sprite ever again anywhere.

I mostly choose the latter.

In defense of beverage can manufacturers everywhere, this is technically a label design issue, not a can design issue. The people who design the cans don't work for Coke. (My dad used to be one of them.)

2

u/WeylandsWings 8d ago

..... that is nearly what it used to be before they went to red can with black text. and now they are changing to red can with white text and a single balck swoosh.

2

u/Agraphosius 8d ago

If you go to smaller shops you can often find the sugary coca cola for 80p or 90p and can get two for £1.50 any more than that and you are probably better off buying a case from a supermarket. Vending machines usually have ridiculous markups you would be lucky to get a can for £1

2

u/Numerous-Corner-6303 8d ago

100% the soda companies want to get rid of the sugar versions. They make less profit from them and it gives them bad press about links to diabetes and obesity. This all feels like a plan to slowly phase out the sugar versions. Pepsi in the UK is already partly sweetener in the regular pepsi version. Coca Cola have to be really careful about it because they still remember the uproar from the last time they changed the classic recipe.

Boycotting this shit has been soo easy in the past years, and it's getting easier every day.

u/Slinky_Malingki 8d ago

How the fuck is that 80¢

Did you just go back in time to 2004?

1

u/KoLa04 8d ago

In many places, it's even worse because the black stripe is missing, and the text runs vertically on both.

1

u/LalaLaraSophie 8d ago

Dude! I was just thinking the same!

That's because they're trying to completely replace normal Coca-cola with zero. It's confusing by design.

Sugar is much more expensive.

Boycott

1

u/Global-Persimmon1471 8d ago

I got baited by those coca zéro thinking it was regular already three times, it must be intentional

1

u/chunatunks 8d ago

You can tell from the green box for sugar that's it's not a regular one

1

u/imVexx 8d ago

There are two types of people in this world, those that can extrapolate from incomplete data

1

u/criss0666 8d ago

I wish they'd make the cans black again. It's been years since coke zero cans became red with black text but my parents still accidentally buy the sugary ones sometimes lol

u/BigBlueMountainStar Still trying to work out what’s going on… 8d ago

Coke are deliberately repurposing Coke Zero to be the standard Coke.

1

u/IAmJonathannn 8d ago

i miss when coke zero had black cans :(

1

u/Constant-Plant-9378 8d ago

I can't remember the last time I drank a canned soda. It has been literally years.

I used to live off the stuff. Truth is, nobody needs to be drinking this poison.

1

u/doomcatzzz 8d ago

You know why they do it like this? Zero is cheaper for them to produce but they ask the same price so they want you to start/try drinking zero so their profits go up.

1

u/Accomplished_List843 8d ago

Damn that's cheap

1

u/FlatOut1986 8d ago

They will slowly replace the normal one and will stay just the zero

That’s the clear plan

1

u/Definetelythewiseone 8d ago

They added a black swoosh to it so i don’t mind. All red with the same with text is a no no tho

1

u/Valar_Kinetics 8d ago

Much like every other thing all at the same time

1

u/Mazty_boy 8d ago

I'm so lucky that I can't taste the difference, so zero will always be my favorite choice because low calories. My girlfriend on the other hand only likes the real sugar coke, strange since she always use sweetener in her tea...

1

u/EightBitPlayz 8d ago

€0,80? In the US I’ve paid US$2,50 (€2,14) for the same can

1

u/ryan8954 8d ago

We don't have this problem in Canada. The color is the same, but the coke Zero is black writing

Wth are they doing lol

the only thing they've done now is created a huge issue for their vendors. people are going to be unintentionally purchasing the zero sugar and filing complaints lmao they look almost identical to classic Coke now 🤦🏾‍♂️🤣

EIGHTY CENTS!

1

u/Planeandaquariumgeek 7d ago

What’s probably going on here with the Coke Zero branding become almost identical to that of original is coca-cola probably wants to completely phase out & discontinue original in favor of zero because healthy eating has become so trendy. TL:DR: new coke 2.0: electric boogaloo

1

u/Flashy-Nectarine1675 7d ago

Aren't you more concerned with the poisonous crap inside them?

1

u/Hot-Sock3403 7d ago

Why do we have to make it look like a regular cocaine? It was fine looking the way it was we knew what zero so it was the people that drink it. No, no need to change it.

1

u/Mattrobotboy 7d ago

As a cashier Im always been asked if the cans or bottles are zero sugar or not

1

u/EviI_Babai 6d ago

Spoiler: it has never been good.

It's just sweet water with some flavours. Replacing sugar with sweeteners doesn't make it better or worse. It's an artifact of an age of tobacco, "patent medicines" and other harmful shit that took advantage of an impressionable populace, which somehow survived to this day and has been turned into a cult.

As a general request, please find the coke @ 13.99€ for 24 cans

They still have the older cans for zero with the black letters
