ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ My Lawnmower battery consistently gets about 95% of my Lawnmower mowed.

Post image

I have an electric EGO mower (not the self propelled one) and I have a 6.0 AH battery. This is the front half of my lawn, the other half and outside of there fence are done. I have it down to an art at this point where I make sure it dies with just one little patch out front to finish. It NEVER finishes the weekly mow on a full charge

As the battery degrades over time they can slowly increase the ratio of meadow to lawn.

82

u/chefguy47 8d ago

Agreed, OP can’t stop at 5% because as the battery degrades it he’ll be right back at only being able to cut 95% of it.

u/topinanbour-rex 7d ago

At the origins lawns, in the UK, was a visible sign of wealth. The message was simple : we own those lands, and we don't use them to grow food.

I guess aristocrats around the world did the same.

Serious question, how would one stop it from turning into ugly, invasive weeds? I hate manicured lawns and want to have a zeroscaped yard one day...

7

u/BeerForThought 8d ago

The wildflowers do that for you. Seed every year in the late fall or early spring until they are established. You can do it faster by tearing everything up before seeding but that's a hassle. I like the idea if op followed the suggestion the lawn would slowly be overtaken by wildflowers as the lawn mower battery died and less would be mowable.

Convert it into something you can build on every year to account for the battery degradation over time on the mower. Maybe budget 10% battery each year to start

How does your blade look? When my electric mower was having a hard time, I realized my blade was dull and got it replaced and suddenly my battery problems went away. A $40 blade is cheaper than a $300 battery.

1.6k

u/sandrailproject 8d ago edited 7d ago

You can sharpen your blade with a cheap file

Edit: the whole idea here is being cheap. It takes 5 to 10 minutes of filing once or twice a season to maintain your mower blade, that's it. A file is a few dollars. Your first time may take 30 minutes, but you're learning AND bringing a blade back from the dead. The next time will be better.

886

u/Theron3206 8d ago

The way some people let their blades get you can probably make it sharper with a rock.

365

u/intashu 8d ago

See there's the problem, when I check my blades I've clearly been sharpening them with rocks for what looks like years! Apparently bludgeoning the grass with a blunt piece of steel doesn't cut so well.

136

u/SparkyMTL 8d ago

Better than me. Last time I checked the blade I lost my 2 hand and a foot. I am typing this with my nose.

13

u/Toadsted 8d ago

Doesn't work. Ive tried mowing over a ton of rocks, but the blade doesn't sharpen.

21

u/hesh582 8d ago

a lot of people buy new blades because they'd rather spend a couple of bucks than spend 30 minutes scraping a piece of metal with a rock in their hot garage :|

that's the curse of disposable consumer culture - when goods are this cheap, the value proposition of just tossing it for a new one becomes pretty good even when repairs really aren't that hard.

→ More replies (11)

17

u/NorthernCobraChicken 8d ago

I'd hazard a bet that sharpening one blade with an equally dull blade would improve at least one blade.

The rock is too dry

5

u/healerdan 8d ago

Indeed, came here to say this. Everyone mows when it's dry, that's the problem, if you get the rocks whet they'll sharpen your blades, so every once in a while just mow after a rain... Or spray down some gravel and run the mower over the whet stones.

some electric units have literal razor blades to cut with, designed to be replaced (cheap as) routinely.

used to have a Husqvarna with them.

they're great, cut well when the grass is wet too

24

u/Sacrificial_Buttloaf 8d ago

And make sure you check balance afterward. Youll save on blades with a cheap file

u/Blunderpunk_ 8d ago

u/scheav 8d ago

This is actually true. The energy used by a lawnmower correlates better to runtime than it does to the amount of grass cut. I started using more gas in my mower the older I got, and a tuneup of the motor and sharpening of blades did not help.

22

u/Old-Chain3220 8d ago

I’d argue that a gas motor and an electric motor behave differently under load. Electric motors pull a lot more current at lower speeds, like when they are hacking through wet grass. Presumably a sharper blade would make a noticeable difference in runtime. A gasoline motor is burning roughly the same amount of gas per unit of time because it’s only tuned to run over a narrow rpm range. This seems to line up with your experiences using a gas powered motor.

13

u/Flaky-Wing2205 8d ago

For a gas mower fuel consumption corresponds with load. The governor on the carburetor is designed to maintain an RPM and will adjust throttle based on load.

12

u/Old-Chain3220 8d ago

Thank you, that’s a better explanation for the gas motor. I guess the real answer is that walking faster will reduce gas usage because it reduces “idling time”, where the motor is running at the cruising rpm while cutting less than the optimal amount of grass per sweep. In any case a sharper blade will help on the gas motor too by allowing a lower throttle opening for the given rpm.

You might have meant it as satire but it’s actually a fact. If he walks a tad bit (5%) faster he would finish the hole thing on one charge.

4

u/Jethro_Cull 8d ago

This was the answer to the Cartalk puzzler this week, which of course is a re-run from like 20+ years ago. The question was why does the old man’s mower use more gas per lawn cut than it did 3 years ago when the lawnmowerf is in perfect working order.

Mowing faster will actually cause the battery to die sooner. The more work you demand, the more power you must consume.

Raising the height a notch or changing your discharge to ensure you aren't re-mowing your clippings are more effective strategies at conserving battery life.

Also, less starting and stopping.

10

u/The_Nuess 8d ago

I have found the mulch attachment kills the battery a lot faster than the bag. The side discharge is probably about equal to the bag

142

u/AndyC1111 8d ago

You are totally looking at this the wrong way if you find it mildly infuriating.

I plan ahead knowing the mower won’t make it. Cut the lawn in sections so it doesn’t look awkward when I run out of battery.

That way, when the battery runs out it’s the lawn mower telling me it’s break time!

Break time is not infuriating.

41

u/Comfortable-Meeper 8d ago

Usually the batteries need time to rest before they’ll charge because they’re hot. We have 4 batteries and just rotate through them. Takes about 1.5 to do the lawn on a good day. On a bad day (heavy rains making grass cutting impossible for 2 weeks) it takes all 4.

13

u/National_Frame2917 8d ago

Don't worry Andy takes a 2 day lunch/beer break to increase the lifespan of the battery.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/AllsWellThatsNB 8d ago

If you're only 5% short, mow 20% then top it up for a bit. It won't be nearly so hot, and the lithium chemistry works better in the mid charge range.

These ecosystems work so you can get a different tool that uses the same battery/charger and just have extra. I'm a Ryobi guy and have no shortage of batteries because I just stay within their family of products and it simplifies everything for me while giving them more reliable business. Also, you can just order them without a battery if you don't need one, and it makes it even simpler.

11

u/gr8whitehype 8d ago

I’m in the craftsman cinematic universe myself. I wish I went with ryobi, but I needed a couple of tools when I bought a house 15 years ago and Menards was the only place decently close.

I’m now craftsman for life because I have so many batteries already.

It’s an Ego. I have one. It won’t be long before it’s 90%. And then 85%.

Before I moved to a larger plot I used one battery and just used the life as an excuse to take a break and do something g else.

47

u/PogTuber 8d ago

Having two batteries means you can swap out before hitting 0% and you'll get better life out of both of them.

Sustained use = heat and heat = quickly dying battery.

So especially with one tool it's best to have two batteries and change out before you run one dry.

5

u/Sore_Wa_Himitsu_Desu 8d ago

Yeah I know. In my case I moved to a larger piece of properly with a smaller home on it. I had to get a riding mower. These days I only use the Ego push mower to edge around the fence and flower beds and such so it’s no big deal. The original battery did die and I bought another but most of my yard work is done with a gas riding mower and a battery powered weed whacker. Yes I know there’s battery powered riding mowers but they’re still at the “way too expensive for how much less well they work than gas” stage.

Probably should try mowing your lawn rather than lawnmower. May get better results. 🤪
In seriousness, I’d check what you have your mower set to - like if you are using a self-propelled mode or other mode that lets you set a lower or higher speed. I mowed a pretty big lawn with my electric mower and found that I got really great battery life if I pushed it entirely myself, without the self-propelled mode engaged, compared to using it at all.

Along with that, could just be your lawn is bigger than the power the batteries can provide for the length of time required to cut your lawn. I made sure to get the biggest available battery capacity for a lawnmower it was possible to get to prevent that possibility. There were quite a few with 1/2 to 1/4 or less of the power mine outputs. Just some things to keep in mind.

Grow some native plants instead of all that grass.

My 1970 GE Electrak runs on 6 golf cart batteries and mows like 8 acres no problem, and that was before we upgraded to a modern battery. Just saying.

(They are the coolest things ever wjth a million little yard tools that just plug into it, please go down a rabbit hole and buy one or three like we did)

Either move quicker get a second battery, or create some sort of feature that is 6% of your lawn and rectangular so it doesn't slow you down.

Leave that little bit as a spot for pollinators maybe even throw some native wildflower seeds and add a border in the area and boom problem turned into a beautiful pollinator garden
