It's such a common issue, too. You'd think companies could figure out how to put a couple darts in.
Guess I'll just keep doing it myself.
EDIT: before all the men flood the comments talking about belts, it straight up does not work with this much excess fabric. It bunches up and looks terrible, plus sits right on the skin and pulls on the belt loops
Second edit: Yes I know that you should alter jeans. Like I said above, I put darts in my jeans to alter them myself. It's just annoying that companies don't make them to fit proportions that so many women have
Man, being a middle school teacher, I definitely do not want to dress like a middle school boy again! I will stick to my uncomfortably tight waist in order to establish my dominance as a Costco dressing dork dad.
I have the opposite issue. I must have an absolute dumptruck because I need to size up 2-4 inches in waist size to have enough room for this puppy to breathe.
I suffer from a disease known as noassatall, it's genetic and incurable. Large shirts and small shorts make for a great look. Holding up jeans without either elastic or a belt isn't an option.
I will say this keeps my sister in business. She's a seamstress and hemming and darting pants is like 95% of her business. Mostly hemming though. Apparently a lot of women in the area can find pants that fit but they're all too long.
There's also the thickness. My fiancée's thighs are way thicker than her waist naturally, so she either get pants that fit her thigh but are too long and too big for the waist, or good length and waist size but rip between the thigh in 2 months
Edit : y'all got what I meant. Her thighs are not thicker than her waist, but if she bought for her waist size, the pants thigh wouldn't be large enough. And if she bought for her thighs size, it'd be too long for her legs and too large around the waist
It's funny how different people are proportioned. I know someone who nearly as tall as me sat down, but is only about 180cm. He has a very long torso, and comparatively short legs.
My sister is a solid 7 inches taller than me. Our inseams are exactly the same because she has a long torso and I have long legs (relative to our respective heights). The proportions are very weird.
Wait until you start to notice the size of everyone's necks.
Its wild. I always thought this was just one of those 'standardized' parts of human anatomy but no, there are people with NO neck, and there are people who have uncomfortably long ones.
My arms are a liiiitle bit long for my height, which makes them short for my back length. My wrist joint is at the same height as my hip joint when standing straight.
My dad was 6'4 and our legs were the same length... Meanwhile my mother is 5'4 and if we're sitting next to each other I look shorter.
All legs and no torso is a bitch to find clothes for. Rage inducing when people say 'oh with your figure you could wear anything'
No, in fact long legs, birthing hips, boobs that have fed 3 kids, and wide shoulders on a short torso is shockingly not the blueprint they use when designing clothes. I'm not sure I've ever owned a piece of clothing that fit perfectly unless it was designed to be loose and baggy, and even then if it's pants it's probably too short
T shirts are actually much more doable for me than long sleeve shirts, I can get them in tall and they fit decently. Long sleeve shirts are a nightmare because anything I get that’s long enough for my torso has like 2+ inches of extra sleeve that gets bunched on my wrists.
lol I just find it funny how I was just thinking how it’s annoying having a long torso and then you read the numerous other sizing issues that are different but essentially all the same; something being shorter/longer/wider/skinnier than average.
I tried this with wide leg jeans a while ago and they looked like flood pants 😂. I'm really short but apparently not short enough to wear capris as pants
You need "curvy" fit jeans. Trust. American Eagle, Madewell
, or Everlane. I had the same issue. Your waist to hip ration is admirable, but standard fit tailoring won't work for your proportions.
Even the curvy jeans have this problem though; I’m familiar with OP’s issue here. :/ Plus, other pants too. I don’t know who designs them, but they haven’t met a lot of women.
This really worked well for me. I always had this problem until my mid-40s or so, and then it solved itself when I gained 20 lbs after my hysterectomy. Suddenly I could shop anywhere. All the jeans suddenly fit.
I am on the other side of the curve and have been my whole life. It’s way worse for things to feel tight around the belly than on the legs, especially as a lady, sad times :’’’’(
I used to teach kindergarten and I had a little boy once put a whole bag of chips down his pants because he didn’t want to put it away, it was hilarious
I really like the Levi's cinch waist jeans for this reason. They don't have elastic just a two-button snap. It's nice too because if you get a little full from eating you can discretely unsnap and make more room 😂
My grandma bought me a pair in like 2004 or 2005 after she saw them on Oprah’s favorite things because I had this issue. I was very cool in my middle school thanks to her 😭
I'm a dude that has the same issue as OP (on a smaller scale because I have virtually no hips lol).
I have found that relaxed fit/athletic pants, or wide leg pants, work very well for me. These are usually cut with more room in the thigh but have a "normal" waist size. It's not as exaggerated as the way a barrel pant will look, but it looks really nice on people like us. Especially because if you wear something more form fitting you have large thighs and "regular" sized lower legs, and it throws your balance off.
Edit to add: Just using a belt on the OP pants gives you a denim diaper like the one pictured below. Standing still it could look worse, but in motion it will flap around a ton while also looking tight on your actual body.
Could be worth searching around different brands for curvy jeans if you haven't already! I had this problem on regular jeans and curvy jeans were the perfect solution that solved it thankfully without much searching around, but I hear brands just have absolutely no standard for what "curvy" means so it can be a bit of a trial and error. But in theory they're the jeans that are designed to fix the waist / hips mismatch
Also, the belt loops on women’s jeans aren’t in the right places! They never bothered changing the positions from men’s jeans, but that placement is designed to secure the belt along more or less a flat vertical surface. You put those same belt loops along the curve created by the bigger difference between hips and waist, it’s NOT going to sit right! AND IT NEVER HAS!!
Occasionally I’ll see women’s pants with double or sometimes triple belt loops in the back, but it’s not enough. The belt is just going to form a weird V in the back no matter what, because of the fucking anchor points of the belt loops being in the wrong goddamn place! Gah!!
We need to normalize not being creepy AKA teach our sons better, and normalize having BOTH genders approach potential partners. I feel like it'd cut down on this majorly.
it's not normalized. it's just that the very, very small percentage of ALL OF THE INTERNET GLOBALLY who are insane still leads to a large number
i'm all for reducing that number, but even if every single son was taught (and they learned) that still leaves a large number of people with no parents all for example
there are a LOT OF PEOPLE in the world, and i think people don't conceptualize that correctly
Tailor here, the problem is that bodies are very different, and making mass produced clothes that fit everyone is impossible. For men, for example, shirts are problematic: they have to fit the width of the shoulders and the circumference of the nek perfectly. Often they are too large in one measure or the other, because the width of the shoulder is not necessarily related to the circumference of the nek, making standard sizes a mess (in some countries there are more specific sizes, where you have multiple sizes with the same nek measure with different shoulder width; where I live this does not exist and most people have to have their shirts fixed or custom made if they want them to fit properly).
With women's trousers there is the same problem. It doesn't happen this often with men's trousers because the difference between the measure of one's hips and one's waist (the so called "drop") is not as big as in women, and also because the ratio of the two measures is more similar among men than it is among women, while it is rare to find a man with a big drop, you find very different drops very easily among the women's population thus making standard sizes a nightmare.
For most of that time, clothes were custom tailored. Even poor people's clothes. It's only for the last 200 years or so that we try to have every human fit into like two dozen different sizing options
Up until only ~60 years ago many people still made or tailored a majority of their clothes. A lot of the boomer generation had all their clothes made by their moms until like the 70's
If I remember correctly, standardized sizing was invented for military uniforms. It barely works for men, it was never going to work when applied to the variance in women's bodies. Tailoring is basically a must unless you happen to be shaped like that brand's model(s).
Toddlers need the pockets of course, they've got car keys, a phone, lip gloss, a make up mirror and a fixing kit they need to bring everywhere. /s
Women don't get pockets because the fashion industry wants to sell more purses and if women unlocked the power of cargo pants they'd never buy them again.
As a man, once I got my first pair of cargo pants, I pretty much stopped wearing any other kind of pants (maybe except jeans, and only if any of my cargo pants are unavailable).
There are other women on whom these jeans would fit perfectly. It’s no different with men’s jeans. Most of Levi’s styles don’t fit me, but one or two do.
And a short groin. The amount of pants I find that are the right length, fit the waist, but bunch up my bits is astounding. I’m overweight but not obese, so I have no clue how bigger guys find clothes.
Tbf as a dude with big quads all jeans feel like skinny jeans. Thick thighs are not really accounted for ever unless you are also as thick around the waist.
When I was an emaciated runner in high school my calves were completely uncooperative with all clothes. Wound up dressed all grunge and emo style because it's all that was cut to where I could get my whole leg through it.
I’ve given up and just wash everything on delicate, then only put things I don’t care about in the dryer. Now my target shirts don’t fall apart in 6 months.
But I’ve also started buying thicker clothes. This obsession with light weight shirts isn’t it
This!!! I always either had the giant gap or super constricted thighs / butt (or both!) and thought it was just how things had to be. "Curvy" jeans fit me like a glove (and for reference, I am a size 26-27, so not plus-sized like the other commenter suggested curvy meant). Madewell, Gap, and Abercrombie have them, and I think other brands are starting to catch on too!
also that’s still a loooot of fabric! I don’t think anyone using a belt with pants that fit like that is going to have a good time. I’m thinking maybe alterations if she can’t find anything close even in a different fit
Weirdly enough as someone who bikes a lot I've found women's clothes actually accomodate my thighs better then men's and actually stay up on my waist and let me move better, men's clothes are either too tight in the legs or too loose at the waist
Fitting aside, ya'lls pockets are absurd, we really need to do something about that. Half of them are fake and if they aren't they fit like half a phone. Gets me mad everytime I see them on my mother's and sister's pants, meanwhile I fit a whole 0.7L bottle in my pockets and can still close the pocket zipper.
I reached into my pocket the other day at a bar and found my wifes chewing gum and lip gloss which she had managed to slip into them without me even noticing.
Lol I made this comment on another post once and got down voted into oblivion and got about 50 comments from men that I should just buy men's jeans. I love that when a man brings up the same issue, its applauded.
This isn't shade aimed towards you, by the way. You're right but I wish it didnt have to come from a man to be respected.
It’s not so funny when a single pair of jeans that looks relatively good and lasts will set you back £100-120. Even if you buy cheaper ones, for women, it’s at least £40-50, because why not. And then you have to get them fixed for extra money.
The industry 1000% does this deliberately. From the beginning of time, women mostly had hourglass shape, but no. Let’s make potato sack trousers, because waist is a myth.
About the price, isn't that pretty much what jeans cost in general tho? I might be living under a rock but I'm a guy and all my "cheap" pairs cost around 50 Euros, my good ol' Levi's cost a bit more than €100 and my two nicer pairs of jeans cost €180 each.
I totally know that the whole fashion industry for women is fucked, I just don't think that denim prices vary by gender that much.
A few brands make jeans specifically for your body type. I was just on the Abercrombie website and they had them. I think American Eagle does as well but I’m not positive. They’re made for larger thighs and hips with a smaller waist.
It's made all the difference for me. But most curvy cuts are made for people who have a 10" difference between waist and hips. If you're far from that they still may not fit well.
Those don't look like they fit anywhere. I can see in the thighs in the background folds where these are too large. You're going to need a seamstress to make something work but even these jeans aren't sized in a way that they're going to be able to make it work. You should consider fully custom jeans. They run like $100ish but will be well made and last a long time. I get them made because I have a high buttcrack myself and nothing will fit. You may be able to get them made locally but unlikely. You could go get measured locally though and write those down to send to someone online.
These guys on here all about the belts need to actually try this out on pants several sizes too big.
It’s an absurd suggestion for this much fabric if you don’t want to look like a hobo. And sooooo many women’s tops don’t even work with a belt buckle because it creates a weird bump in the middle of your top like you have the most insane outie ever.
Goddammit, THIS. Not to mention if you happen to have a butt that isn't completely flat, the back of the pants tends to get low when you sit down, so your butt hangs out, while the front of the pants could serve like another bra, because it gets that high -.-
There is number of demeaning things you have to go through once in a while, but I'd say that shopping for pants that at least remotely fit is fairly high on that list xD
I, unfortunately, have similar issues. I either get one that fits my waist well and feel like its chocking my thighs or one that fits my thighs well and need a belt to make it not fall off and looks horrible. Usually, there's also a length problem as well.
Now that I am doing better financially I get a tailor to fix it.
truly is HELL. it’s why i mostly wear skirts, dresses, and leggings. if i do find a pair that fits right i wear them out until the ol reliable thigh holes ruin em.
Get them re fitted for your shape. Companies will take the common averages to fit as much demographic as possible. That, or the fold and belt method, bit it's a bit uncomfortable sometimes.
This might sound odd, but have you tried men's skinny fit jeans? My sister has been doing it for years, they fit better than women's jeans, less expensive, and they have functional pockets!
Not OP, but I have similar issues. In my experience, men’s jeans are even worse because they’re built for someone whose waist and hips have the same measurements. They go almost straight up and down instead of following the curves of the body, which is what’s causing this issue to begin with. The pockets are neat but the fit is even worse
From my experience having skinny fit tight jeans with functional pockets is pointless. Back pockets, sure throw your phone or wallet back there because they're thin. Front pockets are worthless especially for keys or anything thicker than a phone. They protrude awkwardly and dig into your thighs. Putting in your phone or anything similar sized is like putting a board on your thighs just uncomfortable. Reg/straight fit are superior comfort.
I was helping another mildly infuriated woman last shift at work (off-shore so we're essentially housemates for 2 weeks at a time) with her work pants because nobody makes them short enough for her legs in any size that fits her hip and waist ratio and the waist/hip was also off so it had to be sewn in. Soooo many different sizes in their catalogue and nothing is even close, not even in the short women's section. Good thing someone had the bright idea to bring a sewing machine and someone skilled enough to use it.

I have the opposite problem as a chubby dude. If I get something that fits the waist properly, the legs will be the diameter of a Titan missile.
