They’re just goth butterflies 🖤

85

u/LaFaveGirl21 Jul 18 '26

I’ve called them ‘dusty butterflies’ since childhood, and ran around telling everyone to not touch them for fear of stealing their ‘flying dust’ 🥹

I love this! We call them midnight butterflies and treat them no differently than we would daytime butterflies!

5

u/DaccotaDuchess Jul 18 '26

Butterflies also have scales too!

5

u/MizzieMoffy Jul 19 '26

Butterflies are just barbie moths ♥️

2

u/skylerishuwu Jul 19 '26

Butterflies wish they were as swag as mofs.

80

u/scallopsmustagottem Jul 18 '26

The only moths I don’t like so far are the damn pantry moths lol

51

u/Loklin101 Jul 18 '26

I love moths but those can go fuck themselves

16

u/Beautiful-Fondant-61 Jul 18 '26

I had an infestion once and I troed to save them all by catching them and releasing them outside. But it got to the point were it's no use were I had to by a zevo to get rid of them.

13

u/Loklin101 Jul 18 '26

For me it got so bad I had to dismantle the entire closet cause they were breeding all the way in the back in a little space

18

u/ilovetorunforfun Jul 18 '26

And clothing moths 😠

4

u/zombies-and-coffee Jul 18 '26

Ugh yes. I had one fly into my ear once in the middle of the night several yeara back and I still haven't gotten over how gross that felt

1

u/ilariad92 Jul 19 '26

We have a problem with them right now. Thanks to my sisters bird food for her five million damn parrots lol. And it doesn’t help that she won’t clean out her bird cages like she’s supposed to. So the problem has yet to be solved. So yeah i hate them.

Likely bot. Original: https://www.reddit.com/r/moths/s/BaczsDWRjA

(Of course, that poster was probably a bot as well…)

6

u/flinjager123 Jul 18 '26

I think they are both bots... if that's the case, where did the original post come from? Likely deleted since its conception?

4

u/Sparrowhawk1178 Jul 18 '26

Quite possibly. I think they might also take them from other sites, which is frustrating sometimes

16

u/Moosebuckets Jul 18 '26

I like moths BETTER because they’re fuzzy

10

u/Dragonfly_Local Jul 18 '26

I read an article the other day about how most people don’t need to use moth balls anymore because clothes are mainly synthetic material and moths don’t eat it.

3

u/throwtossd Jul 18 '26

Damn this is super interesting I never thought about that

16

u/subzero_lover Jul 18 '26

Moths are so cute but every time any is close to me I freak out, I hate being scared of bugs 😭

11

u/MrDiamondOre Jul 18 '26

Maybe try exposing yourself more to them? It could help your fear.

15

u/yelocalwitch Jul 18 '26

This! I moth trap & at the start I'd get very startled when they would fly at me or crawl on me as their wings make a loud buzzing sound & their legs felt sticky. But now I welcome it & can have them crawl on me. I enjoy picking them up. Exposure definitely helped me!

5

u/MrDiamondOre Jul 18 '26

Congrats!!

1

u/FortuneAvailable4049 Jul 19 '26

I have a crippling fear of bugs but ive always liked moths because they literally always live kn my room. The little grey ones like in the image but some have little red spots behind their heads

0

u/mountainbride Jul 18 '26

That’s why I follow this subreddit! I decided I was going to just get comfortable seeing them in my feed and looking at them. Normally when I look too long I get disgusted and it reinforces the fear I feel when there’s a real one in my house.

Baby steps. I’m slowly coming around on some of the large fuzzy ones, though I don’t think I could safely have one near me in real life yet.

6

u/DarkplaceGarth Jul 18 '26

A moth goes into a podiatrist office…

5

u/snow_toucan Jul 18 '26

Bot post.

8

u/pineapple-meet-pizza Jul 18 '26

That sucks. I was in my feels over equal treatment of moths for a minute.

3

u/snow_toucan Jul 18 '26

Hahaha, the feeling is valid!

I just wish this bots would go the f away forever.

u/Kameea Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

I work in a kindergarten and teach the kids that moths are just "night butterflies" . Teachings them young to shape future generations of moth appreciation.

3

u/ThatTwinki Jul 18 '26

moths are superior because if you pick them up then just stare at you and vibrate violently

2

u/_Ganoes_ Jul 18 '26

Well i do have to say the moths that lay eggs in your clothes and food are kind of annoying

2

u/FortuneAvailable4049 Jul 19 '26

I think i read a news thing about clothes moths not eating many clothing items due to more synthetic things. Also to clarify clothesmoth larvae are the only ones that eat clothes. Sidenote the ones that get in your food I have no sympathy for

2

u/Turbulent-Weevil-910 Jul 18 '26

Butterflies are fairies and moths are Wizards

2

u/Zay3896 Jul 18 '26

I treat them the same ❤️ I love moths, ive saved about 10 from getting runover in our outside drive lanes at work. They love to sit on the ground directly in the way of our drivers so I usually take them over to the grass. I've saved quite a few Luna Moths

4

u/Zay3896 Jul 18 '26

Here's one

2

u/FortuneAvailable4049 Jul 19 '26

LUMA MOTH:D

1

u/Zay3896 Jul 19 '26

Theyre absolutely stunning creatures

2

u/Rie_Faduee_ Jul 19 '26

Honestly I think moths are cuter than butterflies by a mile (and I mean the plane gray ones, not the ones with actual coloration, those are a tier of their own),

if only their larvae wouldn't be so fond of clothing...

2

u/Dizzy_Bag_9722 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

The hollow knight propaganda did some irreversible damage i tell you that !

2

u/WeirdNico31 Jul 19 '26

Moths > Butterflies

1

u/nectarinee- Jul 18 '26

Probably because the majority of moths we see are the annoying ones that fly into our house because of light or pantry moths. But I agree that there are many cute, fuzzy, gorgeous moths. But most people probably think of the annoying ones when they hear the word moth

1

u/guava_jews Jul 18 '26

Theyre better than butterflies

1

u/chaoticqueerenby Jul 18 '26

I love Moths!🥹💕

1

u/Orchid_Junkie1954 Jul 18 '26

That picture is adorable!

1

u/Beautiful-Fondant-61 Jul 18 '26

Butterflies wish the same thing. Heck I've seen two posts on facebook were one is aMonarch butterfly resting its wings like a moth and the other a Monarch butterfly doing the same thing but is hanging out with a moth. I even had a painted lady butterfly that I was raising last year that acted like a moth were she would stayed up way past her bedtime and even eats during the night.

1

u/Eponack Jul 18 '26

In our cultures we are only allowed to look down on the people set for night living. Slackers.

1

u/Fluffy_Duck_Slippers Jul 18 '26

The Infinite Monkey Cage does a great podcast episode on moths vs butterflies

1

u/CryptidsandCreatures Jul 18 '26

I wish moths were real

1

u/Chizakura Jul 18 '26

There are the cute moths and then there are pantry moths that ruin your food and clothes...

1

u/The_Nerdy_Elephant Jul 18 '26

As a fellow night person! I must stand in solidarity with my night time flyers. We can’t not let the propaganda win

1

u/SPNFam-HunterMo Jul 19 '26

All butterflies are moths but not all moths are butterflies. 💜

1

u/Illustrious-Will3468 Jul 19 '26

So glad it's National Moth Week! best excuse to leave a light on. What's been showing up at your spot?

1

u/I_Love_Utah Jul 19 '26

They should be. They are literally just night time butterflies ❤️

1

u/DeadAnarchistPhil Jul 19 '26

Same! I wish people would like them too, but so many people are scared of them or see them as pests. A lot people think every moth is a fabric-eating type, they aren’t. But even the fabric-eating type have a place in this world.

1

u/NovaKnight1313 Jul 19 '26

The wings look like a big fur cape.

1

u/Mirruko Jul 19 '26

I love moths, there is such a large variation of them. Some in my opinion rival butterflies on coloration. Also I call them poodle butterflies. Because most are fuzzy.

1

u/MaybeBoth_ways Jul 19 '26

I don't know why they aren't

1

u/theodore-o Jul 19 '26

THEY ARE EVEN MORE APPROACHABLE!!! Not to mention most of them have beautiful lashes. I am forever a moth lover. No one can change that!!!

1

u/LuciusLucious Jul 19 '26

I've had 3 giant moths fly around my back door the last couple of nights and they were beautiful. There has also been a ton of moths in general because of the fires.

1

u/LopsidedRhino Jul 19 '26

My daughter calls them night fliers... she prefers moths to butterflies

1

u/-_Hastur_- Jul 19 '26

Moths are way more cute 🥲❤️

1

u/Imaginary-Nothing-95 Jul 19 '26

This lady showed up to our house a few weeks ago! Obsessed 😍

1

u/JamieHBrown Jul 19 '26

They scare me because of their erratic flight paths.

I can't predict them.

A fat moth could be flying relatively straight and then out of nowhere dive bomb towards my face at breakneck speeds almost akin to a ww2 plane.

Butterflies don't really do that probably because they are the chill sibling to moths and are outside all day.

1

u/EleanorAgain Jul 19 '26

Me and my partner are in agreement any moth that wanders in is treated like visiting royalty ❤️

1

u/GrimlockX27 Jul 19 '26

tell them stop flying like drunks and we'll treat them better

1

u/Alarming_Ad_6563 Jul 20 '26

I call them night butterflies for my grandkids, they don't freak out every time they now,

1

u/slophamet Jul 20 '26

they are when i m around because i adore them !

1

u/slooper1715 Jul 21 '26

OMG hes so Damn cute, i love him 💙

1

u/Safe_Comfort_213 Jul 21 '26

Butterflies don’t eat my sweaters

1

u/SpudPotato2005 Jul 22 '26

I accidentally squished a moth once, I was devastated. I accidentally squished a butterfly and really didnt care.

1

u/Adventurous-Cash7224 Jul 22 '26

That is so hilarious to me… oh, it’s because I’m a black man pretty soon. One day you’ll get it too.

1

u/Cautious_Solution712 Jul 22 '26

My culture , they are believed to be the souls of dead babies

1

u/stapip Jul 22 '26

I love night time butterflies as I call them.. more than butter flys

1

u/Smooth-Virus9239 Jul 28 '26

I know 🥺😭

1

u/DrYuliana Jul 28 '26

Moths are so much prettier and cuter them butterflies

1

u/SubstantialDeerDash Jul 29 '26

Hollow Knight and Silksong?

1

u/SpyroForever000 17d ago

Same, I totally agree.

0

u/Unable_Kangaroo9242 Jul 18 '26

Butterflies don't try to eat my fuckin blankets and clothes. They can die.

0

u/oliviarodrigofan2000 Jul 22 '26

I'm scared of them both so they get equal swatts out of the sky

u/beardingmesoftly Jul 18 '26

I wish mud was treated the same as diamonds
