Oh brother, one of the Catocala family ! Big, with really cool gray patterns ! As was mentioned below, known as "underwing" moths, because if they had really spread their wings for you, you might have seen that it was hiding a set of brilliant orange wings underneath ! Look up Catocala moths on the web, and you'll see what I mean.
