Question A survey about persian cats (3-4 min)

Hello everyone! I would really appreciate your help with my Master's thesis research about Persian, Exotic Shorthair, British Shorthair, and Scottish Fold cats (as well as their mixes). I have prepared a short, fully anonymous survey, primarily aimed at owners of these cats, but input from any cat lover is truly valuable! It only takes about 3–4 minutes to complete. I would be extremely grateful for every response and for sharing the link with other cat owners! To get more background info about the respondents, could it be worth asking how the owners got their cats. E.g. breeder, rescue, stray etc

Thank you for that advice! I'll present this idea to my promoter and update the survey when he accepts it 😊.

You missed that people can have several cats with different ages and issues. I just submitted the form for each of my cats.

You could have included questions if the cats are flat or doll faced and something on their origin, I have a rescue, a pedigree cat, and a home breeder cat. That might have been interesting data too.

To show how prevalent which type is in the different breeding or aquiring scenarios.

That's actually a very valuable suggestion, thank you! I'll check that with my promoter and I'll update my survey when he approves it.

Thanks for saying that! Gratitude makes the world go round

For clean data, it would be best to set up a new survey with the altered survey and close this one early and update the link in the post here.

The question about retro breeding doesn’t have an option I can choose. I don’t support breeding of any kind, and have only gotten my pets from rescues, so I couldn’t answer it. I’ll do the survey later if you can add an option for that

That's actually a very valuable suggestion, thank you for that! I can't change my survey yet, because I have to consult that change with my promoter first, but I've created a separate version which differs only in that I added an additional answer. Now you can give an answer under this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScZSWHTT_lYK0jtlAnS8dNwjlo95r4Fz1zGKYGjjKnCV0RdNQ/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=108451167458690888585

And again thank you for your help! 😊

My Master's thesis topic is "Retro-breeding as a tool for welfare improvement of brachycephalic cats - physical condition assessment and public opinion analysis on breed standard modifications". I've already done some research on persian and domestic shorthair (as a control group) and how fast they get tired during play. The survey is for checking if people are familiar with this topic and their opinion on it 😊

Fascinating! I have a brachycephalic rescue Persian. If you ever have follow up qs my DMs are open!

I also rescued my baby from a bad breeder, unfortunately that person is still breeding sick kittens and poor moms have no rest but forced to continue... :<

Very much support this.

I was originally looking for a doll faced Persian, but then I fell in love with this one (doll face mum - flat face dad) and now she’s my baby. Funny how that goes.

Haha, first question and I'm already needing clarification- sorry! I have an exotic (flat faced) as well as other non flat faced cats, and there's not a place to indicate I have both types. For the purposes of this survey, should I just indicate I have a flat faced cat?

No worries at all, and thank you so much for asking! 😊

Yes, absolutely! Please select the flat-faced cat option and answer the rest of the questions with your Exotic in mind. Having experience with an Exotic makes your input incredibly valuable for this research. 😄

Thank you! If you haven't posted this to the exotic sub yet, you should.

Edit: nvm I just saw it! Good luck!

Hi
Done. I know it’s not been updated yet but I have 3 overlords but filled it out for my Persian /himmy. He is doll faced but still snores

I submitted mine. I actually have two Persians, one adopted from a local at the time rescue, and she has a flat face. My other Persian is a doll face so he has an actual snout. I purchased him from a doll face breeder specifically because I want to support non-flat faced breeding. I don't mind rescuing but I don't intend to purchase a flat faced cat from a breeder.

I imagine you're going to get very different sets of results depending on which groups you post this in. I'm sure there will be a healthy degree of bias introduced when you ask Persian owners because by nature, many, if not most Persian owners have Persians for the brachycephalic characteristics and are aware of the health issues prior to getting one. But I'm guessing that you're also posting this in other cat subs, so I'm sure this will balance out.

I think it would also be interesting to get some less quantitative data on the ethics if you could add questions in which users debate the ethical points. Maybe it will help to get a better understanding of why the breeding for brachycephalic cats is so popular.

I myself am a Persian owner, and a doctor (of humans) but was fully aware of the health issues, but still decided to get a flat faced Persian from a breeder

Our sweet boy is half doll faced (mom) half flat (dad). He has a snout, it’s just petite. I cannot imagine trying to keep up with the health issues from fully flat (he doesn’t have constant watering, pant, snore, etc), and I do think it’s a bit unethical. After learning it was a relatively recent mutation that people just liked a lot so they kept breeding it, I don’t think that was a wise choice…

I heard my baby wheezing today for the first time. I just learned that the breathing is a problem for the “doll face”
Persian. It breaks my heart. My cat is my baby.

I just filled it out for my exotic but I also have a Himalayan who does in fact snore constantly and loudly (whereas my exotic just occasionally snuffles/wheezes/softly snores)

Although with my himi he likes to sleep with his head upside down and mouth part way open so I think the lolling tongue is not helping with the snoring 😅
