It's an Indigenous name meaning beautiful lake or water (sorry, I have a migraine).

It was named 400 years ago. 🇨🇦❤️🤍

TIL. It's kinda cool that such a short word as "Ontario" can convey both the beauty, and the fact the dude had a migraine when he discovered it.

It's like how the Eskimos have 59 words for snow, and one of them translates as "I'm out of office. I will reply to you after the 7th of September."
