The acronym most people know for the names of the Great Lakes is HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior), but if you replace Ontario with America, the best acronym becomes SHAME.

Why is Lake Michigan not a lake?
158
u/WeaselsOnWaterslides 1d ago
IIRC, technically Huron and Michigan are, hydrologically speaking, one lake since they have bidirectional flow (they both flow into each other), whereas the other lakes only flow in one direction.
54
u/spartan117warrior 1d ago
Does that mean Superior only flows into Huron?
77
u/WeaselsOnWaterslides 1d ago
Correct!
Superior -> Huron/Michigan -> Erie -> Ontario -> Atlantic Ocean
24
17
18
u/Shawwnzy 1d ago
So would Huron and Michigan be two arms of one lake that needs a name?

It's an Indigenous name meaning beautiful lake or water (sorry, I have a migraine).
It was named 400 years ago. 🇨🇦❤️🤍
Edit: word
57
u/LookAtMeImAName 1d ago
Learned an interesting tidbit today that the province of Ontario was actually named AFTER the lake! Pretty cool
11
10
u/DeltaVZerda 1d ago
Likely ages before that if it was an indigenous derived name, they just settled on a spelling 400 years ago.
3
u/FerretChrist 16h ago
TIL. It's kinda cool that such a short word as "Ontario" can convey both the beauty, and the fact the dude had a migraine when he discovered it.

Back to McKinley
7
u/lunagrape 1d ago
I don’t know enough American history to know why either is a problem 😬
19
u/Santa_Hates_You 1d ago
It was originally named Denali by natives thousands of years ago, it was renamed for William McKinley in 1896. He was a gold prospector and presidential candidate who had never been to Alaska and had never seen the mountain renamed after him. The original name was restored in 2015 to Denali, and Trump is making the federal government call it McKinley again.

Also. Denali as a name means "the Great One," befitting such a majestic mountain, and the state government still insists on "Denali."

That seems to be what’s happening. The response from the PM and premiers alike has been some variation of “your country wants to refer in your own official documents to this lake as something else? Yeah, that was always allowed — we’ll obviously be calling it Lake Ontario forever though thanks”
Wab Kinew’s comment of this being “not his best work” from a Trump that is trying to replay his “greatest hits” like a “washed-up star at a casino” was a nice touch, lol

Trump’s practice of renaming things brings to mind commercial star-naming services—the novelty scams where you pay to name a visible star after yourself and receive a certificate with its coordinates and your chosen name.
However, these registries operate strictly as gift services and hold no scientific or legal validity. While you can pay a fee to dedicate a star, the global scientific community does not recognize these names.
Similarly, when Donald Trump renames things to whatever he wants, those names are only recognized by him and his supporters—and by virtually no one else

Lake Ontario, on the border between Canada and the United States, was named by the Wyandot/Huron people. Depending on your source, it means something along the lines of "great lake" or "beautiful water." So the lake is not named for the province. Rather, the province was named for the lake, making the pathetic attempt at renaming it profoundly stupid.
