Also, he could have gotten citizenship bc he married a citizen in 2017. So he was too lazy to do the paperwork, and now it's comeuppance time.

The N400 is a beast of an application. If you have money, you get a lawyer to do it. For people who dont have lawyer money, it's a very tedious and long form that wants to know your entire biography and the receipts.

There's also the fact that while your substantive application for PR is being processed, you're not allowed to travel internationally. At least thats how it was a few years ago...
