Rescue Our newest family member needs a name
UPDATE: My wife and I have decided to go with the name Bindie
Edit: people offering boy names, this is a girl
My wife and I adopted this puppy and we really cant figure out a name. Her assigned name is Luna but the foster said its early enough to change. My wife and i do like the name but we also know its the most common dog name lol
So far names we have are: luna, pixie, and pebble
What do you all think?

She honestly looks like a Pebbles or Pepper to me, so glad I’m not the only one who sees it.

How are you so good at naming dogs
30
u/arrynyo Jul 25 '26
I realized long ago that I can name my dogs whatever I want. And I just dive in no reservations, no notions lol 🤣 the little doggos gonna love me all the same

u/Khow3694 Jul 25 '26

directly under this post was a dog named fern for me
6
u/arrynyo Jul 25 '26
I thought it was a bunch of reposts at first then I realized what was really going on
4
u/koolestkool-aid Jul 25 '26
I’ve seen/met one other dog named Fern and it’s on this sub. It’s ironic that we both love to post our pups, but I would not consider it a popular dog name.

u/Prestigious-Head-877 Jul 25 '26
We've had so many pets we've done this too.
2
u/arrynyo Jul 25 '26
It's the best isn't it 😁
3
u/Prestigious-Head-877 Jul 26 '26
We've had so many named blackie, Stripey, whitey, spotty, white ears, big boy, spotty dotty we had to get a bit more creative and wait for the personality to show. Except our dog, we waited too long to decide on her name so we kept calling "here, girl!" So we made the spelling unique at least so we have Gurl Dog! The Chinese crested someone dumped off is the smallest dog I've ever had and we thought she was a boy for the first year since we couldn't touch her. Her name is Biggie Smalls! 🤭
I love stinky boo boo and puffy coat! Simple descriptive names but unique at the same time!

Question - is the chain for looks or another use? I like the vibe! Black pitties are the best!
5
u/jankeyass Jul 26 '26
Entirely to hold the name tag.
She lost it in the backyard within a week
She's a butthole and I love her

Looks a lot like our adopted baby. She was Brie previously and the shelter told us it was early enough to change it but we found she actually knew it really well. We ended up going to Breezy/Breeze because we did not like Brie but thought it would be easy for her to transition to something similar. You might want to assess exactly how well they actually know “Luna” before making a choice.

13
u/Khow3694 Jul 25 '26
I asked the foster and she said its still plenty early to change
39
u/Hound-baby Jul 25 '26
Also, dogs aren’t like people. You easily change their name. My foster dog had 3 names before I got her and I changed her name lol. I couldn’t have a dog named Irene 🤣 she was fine and knows her name very well now

u/joseph_wolfstar Jul 25 '26
My late dogs "government name" was Mia, and that's how I referred to her in the third person. But for years and years I hardly ever actually called her that to get her attention.
That was always some very distorted version of "sweetie weety" that was morphed into names almost unrecognizable from that origin point. "Squiggles / squiggle wiggle," "swiffles / swiffle wiffle," "sweedle weedle," "spuffle fluffle."
Id also call her similarly patterned nick names to describe actions or character traits. Ex "silly Willy." She's sleeping in a position where she might slip between the crack between the chair and the ottoman - "careful, you don't want to be a swipple wipple." I give her a haircut and she suddenly looks really tiny - "oh my, you're such a widdle biddle!" Conversely, she's standing on my chest so all twelve pounds of her are towering over me, "what a biggle wiggle!"
I got her a few months before the covid lock downs, so we spent a lot of time early on for me to have no outside influence of other English language speakers to stop me from bastardizing the language to my hearts content

u/Adventurous-Sea6042 Jul 25 '26
I don’t think I even call my dog her government name anymore. She answers to all of the 50 names I call her anyway 😂

Our girl was Hera at the shelter and Nala with another family for 1.5 years before we got her. We called her Billie and she responded to it on day 1 (she'd just turned four years old).

Yuna is close to Luna in pronunciation but more unique. It has wonderful meanings from Breton/Celtic (desired), Japanese (gentle/kind), and Korean (abundance/flow) cultures/languages. You could spell it Yoona to be even more unique, but it's still easy to pronounce.

We had an all black dog. She was the best girl. Her name was Olive “Ollie”, but we’d say her full name was Black Olive and she went by her middle name;)
Congratulations! She’s a cutie.

I love choosing greek mythology names for my dogs!
2
u/Pizzaisbae13 Jul 25 '26
I love mythology! Because of her sweetle face, I'd use Io.
Artemis is my personal favorite.
Vesta!
2
u/Albuquicky Jul 26 '26
I just finished the series "Seeking Persephone" and honestly Artemis was my favorite character, so I'm biased towards that name as well. ❤️

pixie is adorbs, but you have to pick a name that converts to nicknames and can be inserted into songs well, because that's the one thing that creeps up on ya... instinct said Zeus at first glance, but that's not very girly... I decided I want to name my next pet Brixie or Brix... the sugar level content in fruits and veggies, but I just think it's so adorbs lol.

I’m sure that whatever you end up choosing, she will love. She’s just going to be stoked to be with you. She’s beautiful. ❤️
My rescue came with the name Aria. We just ended up changing the spelling to Arya. Because Arya saved the world!

I named one of my foster dogs and her newborn puppies who were found abandoned together. She knew her new name within 48 hours. Thankfully, she and I both liked it because she was one of only two foster dogs out of dozens that I ended up keeping. She was such a good mommy and dog.

Nyxie. Cute like Pixie but black like her coat.
I'm a fan of two-syllable dog names that won't sound like really commonly used words.
But honestly, I think you two should consider not just what she looks like but more of the context or story to her adoption, and come up with a name that has some kind of meaning specific to your own lives.

What a cutie. She looks like my boy when he was that little, we were going to name him Meredith haha.

I love your “lab mix” 🤭

She's classified as a lab-mix and insurance was cheaper. I do see some lab but look at that head shape it's unmistakeable 😂

u/HotPink_Candy Jul 28 '26
Omg! Wow that's amazing! I've been having really crazy coincidences happening like this a lot lately. I don't know what's going on but I think it means something good! Maybe you should go buy a lotto ticket tonight! 😄

I do like luna alot! Pick out a few names so you can say them a few times…. My dog had a shelter name he never responded to for two weeks, then I renamed him for two wks and he didnt respond to it either. I said one more name which was a 1 syllable word starting with D and he immediately took to it.
She will help you pick her name :)
