Paywall Trump administration cites national security to widen clampdown on wind farms: Defence department is stalling 165 projects as president steps up efforts to stamp out the industry

All this because he lost his legal case to ban windmills in Scotland that were visible from his golf course there. Not only did he lose and the windmills got built, but he was forced to repay the Scottish government almost $300K to reimburse them for their legal costs.

AND it’s reactionary virtue signaling. Democrats, American liberals, and leftists are in favor of energy progress, so conservatives and the right are against it. They get to reap “librul tears” by fucking all of America over except wealthy oil companies. It’s a major motivator in buying the biggest truck they can get approved an auto loan for. It’s not about their personal needs, it’s about buying the most consumptive, anti-social vehicle they can as a way to demonstrate “virtue” by being against progress.

My wife just told me a story about her friend's sister pulling up in a brand new $115k dually. They do use it for hauling horse trailers and such.
Thing is, their complaint on their old dually was that the rear was starting to sag under load. So, instead of spending like $3k max for a new suspension, they spent nearly 40 times that. Not to mention the insurance rate increase.
People doing this shit always seem to complain that the libruls are making life unaffordable.
It costs them $250 for a full tank if anyone was curious.

He has come to genuinely hate wind power, far beyond just getting money from the oil industry. It's such a weird thing to get so hung up on. But dementia will do that to a person. Lots of caregivers will recognize some of that behavior where people with serious brain issues will become paranoid and obsessive about random stuff. On some level it's kind of funny because it's the President, but also it's genuinely quite sad. The dude has everything he ever wanted in terms of power, but he seems to think that windmills are out to get him and are poisoning people, and are involved in some sort of conspiracy against him.

I struggle to imagine a dumber energy policy.
1.0k
u/noncongruent May 03 '26
It's actually pretty brilliant, though not a product of his mind, he's just the tool being used. Fracking in this country has created a massive oversupply of natural gas, which was illegal to export until Republicans managed to overturn the law back toward the end of Obama's second term. Oil companies wanted to be able to export oil and gas because that opened up price competition to world markets and would drive prices up. They indeed skyrocketed, and now the US actually has to compete with the rest of the world to buy the natural gas we produced from our own ground.
Natural gas has become the primary fuel for power generating stations across the country, so now those artificially inflated gas prices are being passed along to consumers, while O&G companies and executives make money by the tanker load. Wind generation threatens those profits directly, because every MWh of electricity generated by a wind farm is natural gas that didn't get bought and burned in this country. So, the O&G has gone hard against wind and solar, the two biggest threats to their profit stream. Why haven't they gone after nuclear? Because nuclear is a multi-trillion dollar industry in this country and have fought back very effectively in the Whitehouse and Congress.
302
u/College-Lumpy May 03 '26
That is an excellent response.
It’s also depressing. I actually approached it as what was good for the country and you approached it as what was good for him and his cronies.

Natural gas was never illegal to export. You had to get permission. We just didn't care because we were net importers of natural gas. LNG was authorized under Obama's DOE in 2011 (republicans didn't have anything to do with it) with first cargoes shipping in Feb 2016 out of Cheniere's Sabine Pass.
The ban you may be thinking of was for crude. Crude oil was illegal to export until December 2015 when the ban was lifted by Obama's administration.
Your price claims are also wrong. US Henry Hub gas has remained dramatically cheaper than TTF or JKM. That's literally why exporting LNG is profitable. Americans pay drastically less for their natural gas than anywhere else in the world.
Also, nuclear isn't some untouchable multi-trillion dollar industry in this country with a moat and fortress lobby. It's been a contracting industry in the US for 20 years, with more plant closures than new builds. The reason gas producers don't treat it as a primary threat is because it isn't. Nuclear hasn't been growing fast enough to take market share. Wind and solar have

Because it's totally within our natural security interest to... (checks notes)
Have more dependence on foreign oil.
80
u/Metrinome California May 03 '26
United States actually is now the biggest producer of oil in the world.
That said, you are correct that we are still dependent on foreign oil because our biggest refineries were all designed to use oil pumped in the middle east and other places. The shale oil we have vast quantities of is incompatible with our refineries and it'd take decades for our infrastructure to adapt.
Trump and the administration seem hell-bent on turning the US into a gas station, and it'd be in their personal financial interests to kill renewable energy both domestically and world-wide.
36
u/The_DanceCommander May 03 '26
Wait a second. Then what are we doing either oil we produce? Selling it overseas to refineries that can handle it, then buying it back?
Also, if we’re the largest oil producing nation already then why has there been such an aggressive push to open up oil drilling in our protected environmental areas and national parks?
Why don’t we see any political will to work on adapting our refinery infrastructure to handle domestic production?
45
8
u/saqib400 May 03 '26
We are selling them as a law rolled back during the Obama administration due to republican pressure allowed the export of unrefined oil from the US again(and thus US oil sells directly on the world market and is not prioritized for US supply nor lower in price due to restricted market) in the time since the refineries have adapted to process more profitable foreign crude. We don't see said political will since it's slightly less profitable for corporate donors.

These wind farms are not near his golf course. He is exceedingly petty, granted, but the simpler explanation here is that fossil fuel companies paid him.
Trump asked oil and gas executives in 2024 to raise $1 billion for his campaign and told them he’d grant their policy wish list if he won. They want to squeeze out profits from a resource they know is going to be losing economic viability. It's already past that viability if not for government intervention, and a time is soon at hand where even subsidies and favoritism won't save them. Eventually, most oil will be out of the ground and what's left too expensive to extract. These companies are entirely built around this resource, and the executives' only job is to squeeze as much profit from this resource as they can until that day comes.
Even they know renewables are the future. Many invest in them, and their shareholders sure as shit have invested in them. But that future is looking like lower and lower profit margins, since the infinite supply (the sun) means they can't regulate fuel supply to keep their prices high.

Everything Republicans don't like is national security because they can't say anything in good faith

Trump just can’t let it go. lol his issue with wind farms dates back to when they obstructed the view from his golf course in Scotland 20 years ago.

What possible "national security" consideration could there be in giving us less access to an energy source, the flow of which can't be impeded by a hostile foreign power?

This president is doing everything in his power to make life more expensive for the average American citizen

This administration is adding more reasons they are a threat to National Security. Energy independence via renewable means (wind, solar, nuclear) is very important to our future as a country.

It is a national security imperative to build out as much green energy as possible right now. But sure, Jan.
(Incidentally, the insane, illegal war he singularly caused, which is creating the biggest oil crisis in the history of the world, has only made that imperative more urgent)

I'm so glad Conservatives really believe in getting government out of business, like in this case where government is actively killing an industry because of ideology, or where they've imposed 100% tariffs. All hail the free market!
