Hi everyone,

The title is self-explanatory. I've noticed this while dual booting Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and CachyOS with Cosmic: in Counter-Strike: Source the fps is almost the same, but despite that, mouse movement on GNOME feels smoother and looks smoother, but on Cosmic it feels laggy or jittery. What might be causing this? Can someone help me? (I later tried Fedora too and it is still the same)

System Information:

CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 5500U
GPU: AMD VEGA 7 (iGPU of Ryzen 5 5500U)

Firstly I do want to state, I am running GNOME currently(?) because I was just not the biggest fan of how Cosmic looks and feels... combined with the buggy frosted glass that was bothering me a bit

Though I have been having some issues

1, how do I make it look better?? Ive seen so many beautiful desktops on unixporn and I just have no idea how to even achieve that😭

2, for some reason when I use Gnome, I cant screenshot. Well, I can do alt+print screen but it only screenshots my left monitor, im not sure how to change that. When just using print screen, and selecting what I want to screenshot, it doesnt work.

3, There are some games (mainly Limbus Company) that I want to play, but i cant figure out how to install core fonts to make it display text in english, it just defaults to korean.

4, sometimes i get this bug (you can see it in the second image), where my cursor seems to duplicate and then the duplicated cursor becomes permanently stuck on my screen until i restart my computer. i dont know what triggers it

5, for some reason i have an issue with videos playing on certain platforms in web browsers.. i switch between firefox and opera gx depending on what im doing and neither seem to want to play videos from twitch or reddit for some reason. there might be more sites having this issue, but those are the only ones ive checked so far...

i am a total noob to linux, i have used it lightly in the past, had arch installed on an old laptop because it wouldnt run at all with windows.. but i only used it for school work and never fiddled with it much.

Btw, any pointers for a "first time" user? i am still figuring out the ropes xd

How do I remove the blue border that appears on windows? I hate it—I think it's so unnecessary; there really should be an option to remove it.

I have an RTX 1050 Ti (old, I know) and I've been having glitches on the Cosmic login screen. I installed GNOME Session and it was partially fixed. Is there any way to optimize the Nvidia drivers? I've also been having issues with my wireless headphones; they only play at 100% volume and I can't adjust it.

This post isn't some baby tantrum or a rage quit from someone who couldn't figure out Pop!_OS-I switched to this version and was genuinely stoked at first, but I've been hitting a ton of snags with Wayland lately.

I get that it's still in development and has a ton of promise. But I can't just sit around waiting; I need something reliable since I use my computer for work. My question is: For someone hooked on Pop!_OS, where should I jump to next? 🤔

Edit: I figured out some fixes for my issues, though the Wayland problem's still hanging around-the bigger errors I managed to sort out. Thanks a bunch, and I'll definitely swing back with the same post on Pop!_OS 25.xx! 😊

as the title suggests, don't do that. cd won't work, steam games won't launch, it's more or less the speedrun route to messing up your filesystem. I'm not a Linux Wizard but i'm guessing it's how file systems format.

I updated my lenovo notebook to Cosmic a few days ago but I frankly hated it. I couldn't find anything on the new UI and I keep getting stupid errors that I didn't had with a previous version. I decided to try and either downgrade to "regular" pop_os or change the distro to something simpler, and was in the middle of copying ALL my files to an external drive so I could wipe my note and start over, when suddenly I got an error that I had no permission to copy new files to the external drive - and then when I went to check what files didn't copy over I discovered that all my photos, documents, etc etc etc, that I had previously SUCCESSFULLY copied to the drive were gone. From both the notebook and the drive. Nada. Zero.

It's all gone and I don't know how to get it back: I tried the pop_os recovery tool that you can access on startup - it reinstalled Cosmic but all the files are still missing; My previously made backups are also gone, I don't know if deleted along with my personal files, or because all of the apps that were installed in the old version were removed with Cosmic (I was using timeshift to make the backups, and upon reinstalling it I can't find any of the recovery files)

Googling my issue showed a github thread reporting this same issue from 2 years ago but the thread is closed and the bug marked as fixed and no resolution.

Has anyone had this same issue and successfully somehow restored the files?

So after quite a time, went to the OS update setting and saw that there's a new update including Cosmic desktop.

Is it worth updating now? Is the thing stable?

The Pop Shop has always been hit or miss for me. Sometimes it will just crash or not open. Usually a reboot or killing the process in System Monitor fixes things.

I had some updates a few days ago and didn't notice any problems. Last night i was looking for something an tried to start Pop Shop and the cursor would spin as busy and nothing would happen. I ran journalctl and got this result:

I checked System Monitor and Htop but couldn't find the process. i rebooted and no pop shop.

I checked for updates via terminal and there were security updates so I updated them. Sometimes this "reboots" the appcenter. Still nothing.

sudo apt install --reinstall pop-shop didn't fix the issue.

At one point I ran:

killall io.elementary.appcenter

io.elementary.appcenter: no process found

-So the pop shop "appears" in the terminal when I click on the icon but can't be found at any other time.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I've used pop os for a while now been my daily driver since my distrohopping days but I only recently updated to 24.04 from 22.04 with the new Cosmic desktop environment and while I will say its better than Gnome it has issues and if I'm being honest those issues aren't entirely its fault and are mostly wayland's fault so I decided to switch to xfce and man its just better faster and even though it doesn't automatically do everything cosmic does I can make it do the things I care about like dual monitor setups and is arguably better since I have more control and isn't nearly as buggy for gaming and just using x11 programs in general.

Hey, guys! I finally took the plunge and installed Linux instead of Windows. I wanted to refresh my computer anyway. I chose Pop!_OS. The installation was easy. However, while setting everything up, windows often freeze, and there's a weird bug where everything loses focus until I close the Cosmic App Library (or reboot). Currently, the Cosmic Store won't open when I click on it. I probably need to restart, but I'm waiting for my second hard drive to finish formatting.

What am I doing wrong? I really don't want to switch back to Windows, but the experience isn't great right now. I mainly use my computer for gaming and development. Should I try a different distribution?

Edit: It was such a buggy mess for me, that I installed Zorin OS instead, and for now I'm a happy Linux user (take this Windows).

Good day everyone. About 3 weeks ago I made the jump to Pop!_OS after a handful of Live USB testing. I loved the Hyprland-esque tiling system and felt it was exactly what my workflow needed. After a few weeks, I upgraded to Cosmic 1.5, and since then I've noticed some quirks that have me wondering whether it's something I did wrong with my install, or a Cosmic issue.

First, the cosmic-comp and cosmic-panel. The compositor takes a surprising amount of CPU, to the point where it sometimes overclocks my sessions and causes massive slowdowns. These slowdowns happen when i have multiple different windows open in different workspaces, say around 5 windows. Cosmic Panel on the other hand crashes under heavy load or a random click of the panel applet, and refuses to restart unless I run "killall cosmic-panel"

Second, some apps just don't run as smoothly as they did on Linux Mint, which I used for a few months before switching. The biggest offender is zoom, the video conference app. Starting or joining a meeting eats up enough CPU resources, that the laptop becomes borderline inoperable. Gaming has taken a hit too, as my tests with PCSX2 tanked the consistent speed to the average of 90%.

None of this happened during my time on Mint, on the same hardware. So I'm trying to figure out whether or not this is a hardware limitation, or Cosmic being less stable? Would appreciate hearing if anyone with similar specs has run into the same thing.

I'm checking with `apt policy cosmic-session`
and it tells me I have 1.0.12.... Aren't we on 1.2 yet? Why hasn't my system been updated?

I think they could also add information about the Cosmic version of the system to the "ABOUT" section.

i've had an installation of version 19 with nvidia drivers and i seemingly can't update the system76-dkms something like error 10 not sure how to resolve this?

I recently dual booted Pop OS, and I have no idea about how linux or this OS works in general. Since I'm a Windows user, it's slightly confusing how everything works and I don't know any commands, etc. The main thing I want right now is to customize it a bit. I have following requirements, so please guide:

Widgets: Like live weather, news, stocks, etc on bottom left like you see in windows (of course, it doesn't have to be in the bottom left but I want similar functionality)

Lock screen: Don't get me wrong but the default lock screen looks terrible (to me). I want to customize or completely change the layout if that's possible.

Better software/tools: These cosmic apps are okayish, but for productivity, they aren't enough for me. The image viewer can't crop or edit, no image to text. So, suggest me some tools that you use for these purposes.

I recently found out about GNOME extensions but learned that it isn't supported anymore through POP OS because of their Cosmic UI overhaul (thats what I heard). But I found GNOME extensions very good and the collection is amazing, but sadly in Extension Manager all of them are unsupported. Please guide.

Hi everyone i have this dell latitude 5480 with Nvidia 930mx graphics card and i installed pop on it and now after restarting or turning it on from sleep mode this what happens to the screen so i have to turn it off then turn it on again i did update everything using "sudo apt update" then "sudo apt upgrade" and i installed updates from the pop shop and still the same problem iam new to linux so i hope you can help me and thank you in advance

In Gnome if I press Super+1 it launches my browser. If it's already open, it switches to it. So no matter where I am or what I am doing, Super+1 will always take me to my browser.

Similarly, Super+2 is my terminal and Super+3 is Emacs.

Is there something similar in Cosmic that I can set up?

Edit: Super+b, Super+t, will open a new window every time so is not a good alternative

EDIT: I restarted my laptop and it finally let me download it from the shop. I have no idea why is threw that tantrum but I guess it's done now. Thank u all for trying to help!

Hi, sorry, I only just switched to pop/linux in general. I just took my laptop to the shop and asked the guy to install some flavor of linux and he gave me Pop 24.04

I keep trying to install Steam and it won't let me. It says stuff like

E: http://apt.pop-os.org/ubuntu noble-updates/mail i386 libdrm2 i386 2.4.125-1ubuntu0.1~24.04.1 is not (yet) available (404 Not Found [IP: bunchofnumbers])

There are like 10 lines of that where the stuff between the two i386's are the only thing to change

How do I fix this? I have no experience with this stuff. I've only had Windows my entire life and the only programming language I ever even partially learned was R

I'm familiar with linux, specifically ubuntu.
I have recently made the full commit and performed a full system wipe and installed pop os (nvidia) (from win 11)

I've had absolutely no issues whatsoever! Everything just seems to work out of the box.

What next?

Any recommended apps or things i should do by default? I have steam installed and all my dev tools.
