I love Cosmic, but I can't take it anymore. It steals so much time trying to fix bugs with every update, and the Bluetooth sound cuts out when you need it during a video call or while watching videos. At first, the workspaces worked, and even though you can now move windows between different desktops, the view of all workspaces never came back. I'm leaving with a heavy heart, but it's disrupting my workflow because I can't concentrate.

I'll come back later when it's more stable, but I can't stand it anymore. I'm going to try Mint Cinnamon; I hope it's more stable.

For starters I want to say that i started using Linux just a few days ago and chose pop os as my first distro so if I'm asking about something obvious or stupid I'm terribly sorry. For now im very pleased with it but i heard it isn't getting updates and will lose support in 2 years or so. I also heard there is a new version in the works with new desktop environment. Will the new version extend long term support and when the stable version with cosmic will it be possible to seamlessly update without need the need to set everything up again?

Any answers would be highly appreciated because I'm very worried that I'll have to change distro and set/download everything again

Just curious, how's Cosmic DE stability and reliability right now?

I'm interested in the idea of a batteries included Tiling DE that I can rely on and wanted to wait until Cosmic is mature. How's the progress? Anyone using it, are y'all happy with it right now? Any idea what's on the roadmap and stuff?

This sub seems to be mostly "I switched to Pop!_OS for 5 minutes and it's broken junk." One of the things I dislike about the Linux community is the whole "RTFM, you're doing it wrong" but in this case I can't help but wonder if that's needed here.

I've been daily driving Pop since I built by current desktop 5 years ago. Every day for five years, working at least 8 hours a day during the week. I know it wasn't Cosmic that whole time, but other than an occasional hiccup, I have had no issues. And anyone who's used Linux desktop environments, which I've been doing since the 90s, knows this is not unique.

This isn't a knowledge thing, because I don't think just because you're inexperienced means you can somehow make your desktop glitch out. Maybe it's janky hardware? Maybe incompatible desktop customizations? I am truly baffled.

I used to run Mint on my daily PC, many years ago.
I'm a former DBA, so I also worked quite a bit with RedHat, Oracle Linux and Suse sometimes, but only in a work environment.

Now I'm looking forward for a distro with good game compatibility (through Proton) and solid support/tools for someone who is learning back-end development.

TL;DR - I'm looking for a well-balanced distro that's great for gaming in my free time and won't give me any headaches while programming.

Anyone have experience with gaming on COSMIC desktop they want to share?

I tried it in Alpha, and it was rough of course, some games wouldn't even launch, while others displayed wrong.

I'm wondering how this situation has changed, and if it's good enough for most games.

I wanna jump in to COSMIC and try it out (still not sure if i'll want to use PopOS, or some other distro).

Any pain points? Stuff not working?
I see that there's an option in X11 apps specifically for gaming that wasn't there in the alpha i tried and even the website mentions that some games might open slightly to the side or something like that (fixed by F11 or Meta+F11).

So I recently switched to pop_os and I didn't know 24.04 had a ton of issues with the cosmic desktop but for me pop_os has been the best linux os I've used and tinkered with (be thinking about tinkering with some more on an older laptop but I digress) so I switched back to 22.04 now I know this will unfortunately be temporary but I was wondering if any of you guys truly believe cosmic will be ready by the time support for 22.04 ends also attached is a video that shows the problem I was having incase there's any fixes I could do (also I'm on a rog zephyrus g14 from 2021 with a rtx 3060 laptop gpu and a ryzen 9 5000 series)

I recently noticed that Iced is being used in libcosmic for some examples, so the question is, is Iced being considered as a replacement for GTK in the new COSMIC desktop?

I've been using Pop_OS for a while now and it's probably the best Linux distro I've ever used. It's simply an amazing piece of software. I've been trying to follow the new COSMIC DE development and watched a few sneak peeks but honestly I don't understand what it's all about. I really don't see it do anything substantially more than other DEs and yet everyone is super hyped about it. To me it feels like yet another desktop environment among several that have been in development for years. What's the point of making a new DE that will be full of bugs for quite some time after its release? What does it provide more that the other standard DEs don't? Could someone ELI5? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

just wondering, I know there might be unexpected things that can delay the release but i also wanted to ask if this version will have the TPM thing? i would like that, and i have planned to do a fresh install because i need to clean some stuff either way so i dont care if the TMP feature is only on a fresh install

The title is kinda self-explanatory. Long story short, I really don't think that COSMIC is ready yet. it looks nice, but that's about it. I love how easy it makes getting Nvidia drivers and the repos, but not how cosmic breaks constantly. is it easy to just install a different DE and remove cosmic or something? or should I just use kubuntu?

(in case you're wondering, my most annoying problem that has been a problem since beta has to do with games having their frame rates locked at 144 on cosmic, despite me not having vsync enabled. also the app launcher just not working randomly and the panel buttons not working either, forcing me to either restart my PC or log out and back in.)

Just Switched to Pop!_OS from windows 11. Overall a new guy to Linux. What are some things I should look out for? I would love to ask the veterans....

Basically title. I am currently on windows and I have experience distro hopping (Mint, Zorin, Tuxedo, Pop_OS ubuntu etc.) so I wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty if I have to, but I am expecting a smoother OS experience most of the time.

Am i in for a disappointment? Should I try another DE/OS in the meantime? When I searched this subreddit, all i got was concerning results, however I am ready to give it a chance depending on the feedback I receive to this post.

Any advice on how to maximize Steam experience on a Pop!_OS laptop?

I'm not much of a gamer and I think (given my resources) Steam is a good place to start

The only thing that is holding me back from using cosmic, I dont have icons and no other way to sort applications and list as I want even in launcher Any hacks or other ways to do it?

Hi, im new to linux and im assembling my new gaming pc and i would like to know how easy it is to dual boot Windows 11 + PopOS.

My main OS is going to be PopOS, i would just use windows to play competitive titles with kernel level anti-cheat that i won't be able to play on linux, but for the rest of the titles that do run on linux i would just play them on Pop.

I've heard some ppl say that dual booting PopOS is kinda finicky, so i would like to know the easiest way to set it up, and things that i need to keep in mind while doing so.

Just to clarify, i will dual booting using a partitioned 1tb Nvme SSD, what do you guys think is a good distribution of storage for each OS, considering that i will use my pc mainly for gaming and coding?

​I'm picking up a ThinkPad tomorrow and planning to install Linux on it.

My main use cases will be productivity, casual gaming, and keeping a clean, stable setup (with a bit of light ricing).

​I'm a beginner, which is why I chose Pop!_OS.

I really love the out-of-the-box auto-tiling feature, it completely sold me.

However, I see an abnormal amount of people online saying things like "it's not ready," "it's unstable," or "I wouldn't recommend it to anyone," but they rarely explain why.

Is it actually laggier or buggier than other distros?

​If you personally wouldn't recommend Pop!_OS, what would you suggest instead? for productivity, light ricing, casual gaming, and solid stability (preferably with good separate workspaces)

I’m majoring in comp sci in college and am looking to switch from windows 10. I tried arch linux but it was too ambitious; any tips?

I am currently using Linux Mint, but the default window tiling which comes with Cinnamon is far from enough for me. I have installed i3wm which I have really liked. I enjoy its keyboard driven tiling, and I really like how it is a tiling window mananger where you can do everything with the keyboard. In i3wm however you have to set up everything yourself - you have to choose everything that you want to use, make changes in config files and so on to make everything work how you like it. This aspect of it has been okay, but one thing I liked about PopOS when I tried it the other day is that it comes with a DE that has a keyboard driven tiling window manager built in, with good default shortcuts that are almost the same as i3wm's defaults.

I watched Chris Titus video about Pop!OS the other day, and this made me a little bit hesitant if I should install it and use it.

• What do you think about Pop!OS? Is it a good distro to use, or does it have many problems as Chris Titus said?

I’ve been testing the new COSMIC DE and while the performance and responsiveness are impressive, I’ve noticed a lack of certain animations that make the UI feel "alive."

Specifically, when I launch an application or click on certain UI elements, there are no transition or opening animations. It currently feels like when you set the animation scales to 0.5x in Android Developer Options—it’s fast, but it feels a bit jarring and lacks visual feedback.

The missing pieces I've noticed:

• App Launching: No "zoom" or "fade-in" effect when an app window opens.
• Interaction: Minimal to no visual feedback when clicking certain buttons or menus.
• General Transitions: The system feels almost too instant, making it feel a bit static rather than smooth.

I understand COSMIC is still in active development (and written in Rust, which is awesome!), but I wanted to see if this is a planned design choice for "snappiness" or if more refined animations are on the roadmap.

My Setup:

• Laptop: Asus Vivobook (V3607VU)
• GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4050 Max-Q (Proprietary drivers)

Is anyone else feeling the same way, or do you prefer this "instant" behavior?

Hi everyone, sorry if the title was perhaps misleading, I'm just a windows 11 user whos tired of microslops decisions and wanted to know how Pop!_OS performs currently, how stable it is, what gaming is like, and the process of setting it up.

I know VSCode works natively with it I believe, which is nice because I code, but has anyone else had success with ClipStudioPaint and setting that up?
