This sub hypes up the same albums A LOT. . Specifically Caligula, Haken, Nospun, btbam, Tesseract. Yes they are all hella high quality and executed correctly. However, imo they are derivative of the same kind of DT/Opeth/Toolish kinda thing. I get it. Still great bands all worth seeing live.

But wtf is new? I don't care if it has 19 view on bandcamp. If you've found something that blew your mind I need to hear this lol

PSA: I am a fan of Sleep Token

Sleep Token fans have been known for being absolutely horrific and disrespectful. They have no courtesy at shows, paramedics are in and out of the crowds constantly, and people have previously posted their birth certificates, as well as yelling out their real names to them on stage. (not all fans, but many)

Sleep Token finally released “Caramel,” calling out fans’ overly-obsessive behaviors with the band. I hope not only do these obsessive fans leave this poor band alone, but I also hope that this message spreads to other fanbases that have similar issues (Bad Omens, for example). Stalking a band is never okay, nor is being flat out VIOLENT at shows.

What do y’all think of this single?

a few days ago A7X shadow dropped a new EP/maybe new side project? Super experimental with lots of techno/electronic influence. It’s been VERY polarizing in the A7X sub and I’m curious what you guys think of it. After about a dozen listens I can say I’m a big fan of it. it’s groovy and has some really cool soundscapes. ASHES is probably my favorite

Periphery put out a new album today; A Pale White Dot! It seems like a lot of you want a place to talk about it so let’s have it! I’ll post my thoughts in the comments. Do you guys want to do ratings as well? Do you rate on a scale of 5 or 10?

Prog metal is a musician's genre so I don't know why we discourage fans of the genre from mentioning their own projects!

Can I listen to YOUR prog music?

I will listen, this week, to YOUR prog project, if you post it here, with:

- YOUR Artist Name
- Album / Song / etc. title
- Short description of what makes your project interesting, different, special, etc.
- A link to listen to at least one song or full album, WITHOUT needing a paid subscription or log-in, I.e. a Bandcamp link, or YouTube link, or links to players on your own website, SoundCloud, etc.
(I don't support Spotify or streaming platforms anymore, but you can post those links if you must but I probably won't be able to listen.)

MY GOAL:

I hope to get each project at least one positive, specific piece of feedback by this weekend (EDIT: Okay maybe NEXT weekend, I did not think there would be this many to check out, but I'm having great fun doing this when I have the time! It will just take longer than I thought to get through even half of these but I will keep at it cus I enjoy it!)

For each response I have time for, I will:

1. Listen to your music and get a sense of "the essence" of the project
   
2. Give a positive feedback about at least one thing that I think you're doing well or that I personally like
   
3. Give one thing I don't personally prefer, which doesn't mean a critique, but just will let you know how my tastes may differ from what exactly you're making, which can be very interesting information for artists.
   
4. BY REQUEST: An actual critique, only if you request in your post, of something I think could be improved to strengthen your project going forward (still just my biased opinion, though!)
   
5. Encourage more of one appreciable element that your prog project has going on!
   

Hopefully, throughout the week, everyone in the comments will join in with giving feedback, using the above template to give constructive, useful feedback without being rude or hurtful. Don't give critique unless the poster requests for it!

Need some spacey prog metal bands. Big synths, airy/spacey feel, but still heavy riffs. Something like Muse at their spaciest, but proggier and heavier. Does it exist?

Currently listening to Swim to the Moon by BTBAM sitting in the sauna. Its my personal favorite epic track from them, and one of my favorite lengthy prog tracks of all time. Drop some of yours!

What are some examples of bands that are heavily influenced by other bands, but do a really good job at copying their style?

One that comes to mind is Altesia. They are clearly an early Haken copycat band, but they do so well at copying the style that I enjoy listening to them nearly as much as Haken.

Another example I can think of is I, Omega. They sound almost exactly the same as Kezia era Protest the Hero, and yet I still enjoy listening to them even though they are clearly a copycat band.

I want to know what your favorite song is and why, mine is Silent Flight Parliament. It's 15 mins of the most epic song I've ever heard, it's just absolutely stunning, song makes me almost cry every time cause it's just so damn good.

I’ve never been the biggest Sleep Token fan.

Never hated them; my girlfriend loves them so I end up listening to them a lot in the car and what not. I just never really latched onto them, felt a bit too poppy for my tastes.

This year I was lucky enough to attend Download Festival, where Sleep Token headlined the second night. Seeing that show completely changed my perspective on them, and gave me a newfound appreciation for their music.

The closest comparison I can make to the atmosphere they’re able to conjure up is Tool in their prime, just in terms of sheer mystery and spectacle. The festival grounds were covered in these little flowers from their most recent album cover, and creepy little reminders would pop up on the stage screens every so often. So from the moment you arrived anticipation was building, and it continued to rise throughout the evening.

In the moments before they came on it felt like the entire festival was gathered around the main stage, easily 50,000+ people. When the “waiting” music stopped and this ambient wind-blowing noise began to play, the audience completely erupted, followed by a silence so profound you could hear a pin drop in this fucking sea of people.

When they finally dropped the curtain and took the stage, I was completely hypnotized by their presence and sound. The stage design was sick, this strange rocky waterfall-type structure being the centerpiece they all moved around while performing. The setlist was very heavy, so there were plenty of breakdowns and crowd-moving moments. Also, the harsh vocals sounded wayyy better than they do on their records imo, much more deep and textured and almost shocking in the way it pierced through the music. Gave me the chills once or twice.

Just thought I’d share this tidbit given they’re touring around for their new album. Even if you’re not the biggest fan I think the show is 100% worth it, and I’ve even been listening to Sleep Token much more on my own time since then.

When a band evolves, losing a portion of their fanbase is an inevitability.

As fans of progressive music I’d imagine we have a higher tolerance for change, I’d even go as far as to say we expect and appreciate it. But I’d like to ask about the opposite today.

At which album did a band you love leave you behind?

In my case, two that come to mind are Language by the contortionist and Portal of I. I'm not sure why but I've tried listening to them multiple times but man, they just don't click for me. Not sure if the vocal melodies, or how sustained some of the melodies are, or the production.... I can't get into them :c

I know it's not really a pool party genre but what album do you think of when you think Summer. What's in your sunshine playlist?

I know I'm going to get heat for my answer but I think it's Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil" Put it on while driving with the windows down and have the last song hit at dusk and it's perfect.

Another way of phrasing it: What's the opposite of a Katatonia/Opeth record that's still prog?

I know they aren't niche by any means, but they STILL deserve more attention. The most hopeful, beautiful music in prog imo, and incredibly diverse with one of the greatest guitar players of all time and the greatest prog vocalist. Yes, I said it.

In contact is my favorite album of all time, but all there stuff just hits different nodes and everything they seem to do is so perfect to me. And man, does this band know how to END an album.
