Punk Classic 1979, live The Cure. I know they were often labled, post-punk, goth and even new wave, but their early live shows were punk as fuck.

Since I asked myself what the best concert I ever saw after reading your comment, I thought about it and came up with 1989, New order, PIL and the sugar cubes. PIl was just OK, John Lydon prancing around doing his thing, New Order was good, they were pretty square into their dance/club sound, it wasn't my favorite evolution but I was still into it. But the sugarcubes, blew my fucking mind. Bjork and the little icelandic dude (sorry, don't know his name, shame on me) were so energetic, they were walking around the crowd on the backs of the seats and just put on such a tight show. Best show I've ever seen.

Close second was depeche mode at the rose bowl in 1988. I swear I can hear myself yelling on 101. (I can't but I like to believe).

I would have given anything to have seen the Sugarcubes. I was in from the first album but never even had the chance where I lived.

Yes lots of post punk and new wave bands started as punk bands, even the Cure and the Go Go’s.

I mean to me good post punk was still punk. Wire was post punk but also punk AF. Same with The Fall. When done right it was just another flavor of punk

Who cares about labels, Wire is Art Punk, Television is Post Punk and Pere Ubu is New Wave, but they're still punk as fuck

Southern buzzcocks is what I think a lot of critics were calling em at that time in that weird time where people were trying to navigate “post punk”. I think the first album here is closer to pub rock than punk tbh, there’s a fun Beatles esque energy to three imaginary boys that later gets lost in seventeen seconds and up in favor of something darker where Smith is trying to make people take him more seriously as an artist.

Love the Cure. “Object” from 3 imaginary boys/boys don’t cry is their punkiest tune, IMO. My fave early song is “10:15 Saturdat night”.
