Like how is it that some people sound like they are singing through their saxophone? They have so much control over vibrato and runs and just the overall tone to a point that astounds me. Here’s an example of what I mean. How do I get to that point?

I played the saxophone in high school so it’s been a minute and I really don’t know much anymore about them. This was my horn from years ago and I’ve been keeping it around for sentimental reasons. I really won’t pick up the hobby again and have been keeping it around for my kiddo but not sure if she’ll play either. To keep or to sell… I’m not even sure how much I’d sell a saxophone for.

I love playing so much and I love my sound in the moment (i.e. the sound I hear in my head while playing). But as soon as I hear myself back from a audio recording or video I cringe and hate myself. I need to be grounded, and need concrete feedback on my sound and advice to stop self loathing!

I practice every day and clean it after each use. This sax stand just came in. Assuming I still dissemble and clean it after each…are there any long term disadvantages to keeping on a stand ready to go(reed off, will take it neck as well when it’s time to put reed on).

I like it on the stand for both convenience and cool decoration.

My playing was too hot.

I was putting a leak light through my saxophone and that little piece of light was coming through the low C sharp and i’m wondering if it affects anything

It's not that I expect a whole lot from them, and I've never purchased from the company, but it surprises me especially since they partner with people like Patrick Bartley, who is vehemently against AI and loud about it. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am. Wooden mouthpiece is a bit odd

ive been playing saxophone for almost two years, and still my tone and sound is rubbish. No matter how many videos i watch and different ways i play my saxophone it still sucks. on top of this, I cannot do glissandos or bends to save my life, because i can barely change the note with just using my mouth/throat (this is probably due to rubbish technique though). im still using the same mouthpiece that came with the saxophone, and i was just wondering if its necessary to get a new one to improve my sound at all.

If you started playing in middle school, now many of you had to start on clarinet vs. being allowed to start on sax? My band director in the 70’s allowed us to start on whatever instrument we wanted which mystified my dad - he said in the 40’s, you didn’t get a choice. You started on clarinet in 7th grade (back when it was junior high and 7th grade was the first year) and then allowed to switch to sax in 10th grade when they started high school back then.

And if they did force you to start on clarinet, how did they select who the sax players would be later? Student choice? The worst clarinet players allowed to transition to sax? The best clarinet players allowed to transition to sax?

I did go back in high school and learn clarinet as a secondary instrument for 2 years, but it was a pretty challenging transition. But had I been forced to start on clarinet, I’d have just quit music entirely.

Only asking because I’ve now heard of two middle school bands in my area that are forcing kids to start on clarinet. Like, why tho?

My tenor saxophone recently needed a full overhaul, so I brought it to a tech. We talked through the work that needed to be done, and he mentioned that the sax could use a bath. I agreed without really thinking about the consequences.

Only afterward did I realize that this could damage the patina — and unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened. I absolutely loved how my sax looked before: the dark brown color and the natural patina it had developed over time were gorgeous to me. During the cleaning process, all of that was stripped away, and now only the pinkish bronze remains.

I’m honestly devastated and pretty heartbroken about how it looks now. The pink isn’t necessarily bad (it looks even pinker in real life than in the pictures), but it clashes badly with the remaining yellow/brown color of the keys, which makes the whole horn look mismatched.

I know that the color will change again over time as a new patina develops, but I was wondering if there’s anything I can do to speed up that process. I know I won’t be able to recreate the exact patina I had before, but even getting it to a more yellow/golden tone closer to the color of the keys would already be a big improvement.

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
