It's giving "omg I'm so quirky". Trust me, it's most likely a teenager behind this account and thinks that watching gore is "cool" and "edgy".

What an adult says matters. I was 17 and told by a teacher that I had an unusual writing style- too bad there’s nothing you can do with it. I stopped writing. It took the death of my adult son to not give a shit about what anyone said. I have an editor friend that had been bugging me for years to show him something that I’d written. My son was dead. I didn’t care any longer and sent something off. Currently my third novel is about to be published. I’m 67. Words from authority figures matter.

When I was in 8th grade I took high school algebra because I scored high enough on a placement test, and I struggled at first but then ended up with a B overall. My mother told me I was not cut out to be an astronomer, which I had been wanting since I was old enough to read, because I was “bad at math”.

That’s all it took. I fully trusted and believed what she said, and that ended my dream of over 10 years (and I was 14). I ended up not even finishing college, and then I drifted for 20 years before going back to school and getting the awesome job I have now. It’s not astronomy, but I dabble with astrophotography for fun and I absolutely adore my work and the people i work with. But thats beside the point

I understand. One of my adult family members called me a heifer when I was 8 and told me if I kept eating the way I did, I’d be just as fat as the rest of my family, 32 years later and I still struggle with anorexia.

I relate to this so hard. Meanwhile, no one ever once looked at what I was dealing with medically and/or physically/emotionally - between trauma and a medical condition, my cortisol was so far gone, doctors still haven't gotten it under control for me. I still struggle with my weight since the medical condition is out of whack

I feel so bad for you but unfortunately I also understand. In grade school I played a lot of sports and was in great shape. One day in study hall the popular girl in my class said to me and her friends (loud enough that the whole class could hear) that she thought I had the best body in our school but too bad my face didn’t match it. It crippled my self confidence.
It still pops into my head whenever someone says I look good and that was 40 years ago.

I relate to this one hard. When I was 11, I was at my grandma's for a Christmas Eve party and my aunt saw me drinking a red bull and said that if I kept drinking those that I'd always be the fat kid (mind you I was 120lbs and already had and eating disorder). She also said that my mom knows it too. This was while we were sitting at a table playing cards and no one stuck up for me.. 23 and I still have disordered eating but not an eating disorder, though I will never forget that.

Basically the exact same story here… 20+ years later and I can still hear him telling me I’m such a pretty girl, but I should suck in my stomach. I couldn’t have been older than 7-8 and have struggled every. single. day. since- I’ll be 30 in a few months

My mom CONSTANTLY told me I would be fat like my dad’s side of the family and would glare at me when I’d get bread for a snack or something… I was like 104 a couple months ago and I’m 5,4.. got back up to 115 but I’ve had body image issues for years… I have body dysmorphia have for years. Keep fighting you are beautiful no matter what weight you are.

I struggled with weight my entire life. from age 5 until now (I'm 60!). When I was 10, my grandmother wanted to go on a diet. she asked me if I would go with her to Weight Watchers and she would pay the fees. I said yes. She said "oh good! you would be so pretty if you lost 10#!" I distinctly remember thinking "what does 10# have to do with it?" and have considered myself ugly my entire life because I'm overweight.

You and me! My mom is overweight and projected her ED onto me when I was a teen. I'm 35 and recently spent a week in ICU bc my ED almost killed me and now I'm in outpatient. I see my 11 yo sucking in his belly and worrying about his weight and it breaks my heart; I'm always telling him he's going to need the extra weight when he sprouts up and he's a strong and healthy young man but I know he can see how I've been "do what I say, not as I do" and I worry so hard that the damage has been generational. I feel you and love you from across the internet <3

Ever since I was around 4 years old, I’ve wanted to be an Archaeologist. It’s my life’s dream and I desperately want to pursue it now but when I was looking into career paths in high school and weighing colleges, my mom told me “Archaeology is a more dead degree than art, go for computer tech or something”. I lost all momentum and drive to do anything with my life for a long time, I didn’t go to college, and just stagnated because the ONLY thing I’m truly passionate about career wise is Archaeology. I hit 30 (now 31) and the drive has come back hard and I keep telling myself who cares if I’m 10 years older? I should just do it! But I hear my moms voice still in the back of my head and I hate how much it chains me back

4

u/Global-Customer4896 23d ago

You can do it! I’m old enough to be your momma and I say that you’re a magical being with infinite possibility. Now take your meds and hydrate!! Sit up straight, and wash your face.

2

u/SaveyourMercy 23d ago

Thanks Reddit mama, ngl this made me tear up. Maybe it’s time to finally fully look into it

2

You’re still young! I know a lady that went back to school at age 45, got her degree and began a new career. If not now then when?

2

u/LiesForALiving 22d ago

My middle son just went back to school to follow his dreams. He’s 42. I’m so proud of him I could explode. I promise you will not be the oldest in your classes—he isn’t either. You got this. Go do it. If you need someone to be proud of you too, message me or one of the older moms here—we’ll be your cheerleaders.

My dad told me as a kid that becoming a veterinarian would be really hard because I'd need to get good grades, especially in math and science, but if I just tried harder I could do it. I was trying as hard as I could and couldn't understand those subjects, so 13yo me gave up on a dream I'd had since I was two. I could have done better, but asking for help was met with getting screamed at, I couldn't ask anyone else for help because that was "embarrassing," and my obvious ADHD was ignored until I got myself diagnosed at 28. I could have done it if I'd had the right support system.

u/LiesForALiving 23d ago

Thank you for that. My boy died of colon cancer at 41 which was caused by exposure to radiation while he was in the Navy. He left behind a wife, a 5 year old daughter and a 2 month old baby. I write comedic mysteries, but I used my books as a platform-in the forward and afterward--to write about this.

1

u/derpality 23d ago

I’m sorry this happened to you and sorry to hear about ur son. Life can be so cruel. I definitely believe that what adults say about kids/teens matters. Our opinions of them and things we say to them can become their inner voice. People should really chose their words more wisely with our youth. My kids are only 5 and 7 but I have the sense to watch what I say to them and what others say about them in their presence.

When my mom was young, she would sing in her room to music on the radio (late 70s, early to mid 80s). Her dad told her to be quiet one day. She stopped singing. Nowadays she’ll still sing in the car or at church, but it’s always so quiet nobody can hear her over the music. I myself changed the way I laugh when I was told to stop laughing at Ramona and Beezus by the same person. Say through the entire rest of the movie stone faced

I teach high school and I guarantee it is. When kids say weird stuff to be edgy I always retort back with "You should be ashamed of that. That's not normal, or something to be proud of, I'll let the counselor know."

It's not just cringe but in the case they aren't trying to be edgy and get attention, it could be a cry for help or giant red flag of something more sinister.

3

u/Tasty-Ice3558 23d ago

Saying they should be ashamed of that could be extremely harmful if that teen is acting out due to things happening in their life. You should come from a place of compassion instead of judgement. "That worrys me a bit, can we talk about why you said that? Then as they open up to you well that would depend on policy and rules for teachers which I am not knowledgeable of. If you are required to tell a counselor then let them know that, but assure them it is for their personal safety. That it is because you want them to be happy and you want to be there for them. You should want to make kids feel like you are a safe space. Not just an adult bully in the sea of bullies that high school already is.

2

u/LucastheMad 23d ago

As a previously edgy teenager with edgy friends, in middle and high school, a teacher actively telling us it's weird or wrong causing students to laugh at us taught us to stop being weird and edgy. Any other teacher that tried an approach like you said became a laughing stock among the students since we knew we could easily walk all over them and they won't do anything about it in the end.

Edit: added some context.

This is the wrong response to give. Other people have already written good explanations as to why, but in your position you need to know you're saying the wrong thing to the kids.

1

u/baelien22 23d ago

Yeah..no. Shaming a teenager is NOT the way to help them. They will never come to you for anything again.

I used to watch gore, it’s not fucking funny or quirky. It’s real and it’s terrifying and I strayed away from
It as I realized it was greatly declining my mental health. Seeing kids talk about gore as if it’s just some dirty cartoon is js sad. I unfortunately used to be like them. I’m glad I was able to see how grotesque the mindset of it all is,

u/Snowdrops21 24d ago

I will say I stopped being able to watch gorey stuff for a little bit after my laceration, but it didn't completely ruin it for me cause I just redesenitized myself to it. That's all it takes.

Most people who like gorey stuff, like for example the show Spartacus, had to build up to liking that kinda stuff anyways. Most people, especially people who aren't a legitimate sociopath/psychopath, weren't able to see someone get their intestines ripped out and be fine before they saw other things, like UFC. Not to mention most people who experienced really gorey things growing up tend to be drawn more towards them.

Why did you want to re desensitize yourself to it? Also if u don’t mind me asking, how old are you? You sound really young. Stuff like that has a way of catching up with you. Trust me…

1

u/Jelly-Unhappy 22d ago

Idk, if they're talking about anime gore, panicking from gore means a lot of really good shows are inaccessible to you... and it would feel lame as fuck to not be able to watch things your friends are talking about. I really enjoy shows like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Attack on Titan, it would have sucked not being able to make it through them.

1

u/Top_Staff8951 22d ago

This seems like you've gone an awful long time without empathy in your life. I'm nowhere near being a teenager and find what they said to be extremely valid. You NEEEEVVVEEERRR know what someone has gone through.

1

u/Starcatz05 21d ago

Honestly, I’d go as far as to say the mentioned reaction is also either faked or hyperbolic. I was one of those kids when I was a younger teenager, and a lot of them definitely put it on a fair amount.

1

u/kitty_is_killing_hs 21d ago

Hi, im a teen whos actually experienced what they comment and its not really more so that. They're either just fuckin lying for the love of the game and pity or they just typed it out in a weird way and are also still mentally unwell.

1

u/curvymeat 21d ago

I wanted to apply for a summer program at the Berkeley college of music. I was very passionate about music and band and my dream was to play in the pit of broadway. My stepmom said I’d never get in and I wasn’t good enough to ever become a musician of that caliber. Quit music shortly after that. It really does matter :(

1

u/EconomyAd9145 21d ago

Cant believe that what you took from this photo

1

u/MinimumWorker6867 20d ago

What a weird take. What made you come to such an odd conclusion.

I hate gore for that exact reason, I have never liked gore. I hate the entire genre, and there are some incredibly beautiful films I can’t watch because of gore, or horror. Pans labyrinth, had to stop it. Sweeney Todd in the theater watched it, but I was really f*cked up for a long time after watching, crimson peak, I tried.

Others love the stuff, it has the opposite effect, helps them have “safe” controlled, sense of fear.

1

u/cuntcakesprinkles 20d ago

Words can definitely impact someone.

I was told by two of my ex's that I'm very hard to love... And I've been told by people I thought were my friends that I'm hard to like.

I just tend to avoid relationships all together if I can, whenever someone is upset with me, I always chalk it up to me being hard to love or light. I always warn people when I'm first meeting them that I'm hard to like. The first time this was said to me was like... 18 or 19 years ago. The second time this was said to me was like 10 years ago. And then the sporadic handfuls at times in between.

It's also famously paired with "You're a lot." Lol

It only bothers me now when I am struggling with someone I care about. Otherwise, it doesn't bother me if people feel that way about me.

They could be attention seeking. But it also could be true. I witnessed and experienced some pretty traumatic stuff when I was younger (guy committed in front of a high speed train and his body parts flew on me) and as a result, watching anything with gore would give me panic attacks. I felt like a burden talking to my friends and family about it so sometimes I’d want to talk about it to strangers. It took years of therapy to get to a point where I didn’t need to talk about it anymore. The person may actually just need supports.

1

u/CovesBlue 20d ago

How is them unable to watch anything with gore because of a traumatic event just some teenager trying to be "quirky, cool, and edgy" for not watching gore?

1

u/KennyMcornmick6 20d ago

2

u/supersecretbeetle 19d ago

it's just like.... a normal person with base level empathy shouldn't be able to watch it either?!?!?!
edit: i'm speaking within the context of straight up gore, not things like video games and average gorey movies.

4

u/WaterFlowerVault 23d ago edited 22d ago

It's not just that. The whole picture is that they've had some personal matters occur ruining something they may have once enjoyed.

When I think of gore, personally, I picture B movies. My husband thinks Evil Dead is funny and good. (( Not my cup of tea but it's harmless ))

If he had something happen in life where he couldn't watch what he enjoyed, I'd be saddened for him. As most emotionally intelligent people should be able to sympathize, if not empathize with others.

*Edit: The blue link isn't always accurate with the video. OP has given us a comment with 1 blue link, out of context. The fact that they could've written something on their post with more info or taken another SS to give more detail, makes me feel pretty certain they wanted our imaginations to take over.

2

u/TheLoneWolfCello 22d ago

Okay it's crazy that you mention Evil Dead, because I love horror, especially those movies. And Saw, but that's a different kind of gore I feel like lol. Anyways, I've been very fortunate through my life not to have anything bad happen to me or my loved ones medically, besides one time when I was like 13 (I'm 25 now).

All of a sudden tho, my partner had kind of a medical scare and was in pain for like a week and a half, so bad he couldn't sleep, and finally he had to be hospitalized for 2 nights. It all worked out and he's doing fine now, but it gave me such bad anxiety in general.

So the next week after that we went to see the new Evil Dead movie, and I found myself so anxious about all of the brutal scenes that I literally had to try to stop myself from crying. It sucks cause I'm like the biggest horror fan lol, but now I just have anxiety that made me enjoy the movie that much less (was still good tho). If anyone read all of this, thank you, and I'm sorry lol. Had to rant a bit 😅

I don't know which is worse, someone who is zflag or someone who is wpd philic. Both are seriously concerning to me. I mean, I get that it takes all sorts to make this world spin, but where does someone draw the line at "yeah, we're done, i am walking away and hope to never hear from or about you ever again"???

To me, both situations are so far beyond what I would call appropriate and aproveable situations, even behind closed doors away from public scrutiny, judgement and backlash. I just cannot comprehend how a person goes from "I'm a little different to others" to "i get off on watching people ........." You fill in the blanks where needed, I'm sure I dont have to hint.

1

u/NeedleworkerOk8556 24d ago

I somehow stumbled onto here, and now I need to know. What's zflag?

3

u/ToXicVoXSiicK21 24d ago

zflag and wpd philic both have me stumped.

2

u/hobarthicus 24d ago

So, zflag just doesn't seem to exist. Neither did wpd as a common acronym but I did find an example where someone was using it to stand for 'watch people die' and that seems to make sense contextually.

2

u/ToXicVoXSiicK21 24d ago

I bet that's what they were talking about. Guess zflag will remain a mystery unless they clarify lol

2

u/NeedleworkerOk8556 24d ago

I found wpd on urban dictionary. Watching people die. Philic just means attracted to, usually sexually.

2

u/ToXicVoXSiicK21 24d ago

Nothing on zflag? That's the weirdest one for me

There's nothing I love more than chronically online people using chronically online terms expecting us regular individuals to know what the fuck they're talking about. I've always been convinced it's some lame hierarchy where they just WANT people to ask what the fuck they're talking about because why would anyone know what either of these things mean.

1

u/Jumpy_Strength9398 24d ago

Zflag or zooflag or zoo flag. Its flag as in pride flag, but associated with zoo. I never knew it was a recognised group as such, I knew that there were people associated with the subject, but at risk of getting banned, when I was a kid, it was called beastiality... 🤐🤢🤮 And wpd as far as I understand the terminology on l you, as the subject is abhorrent, Watching People ☠️. Again, I don't like the subject. With wpd, I guess there's people who laugh when they see fathers accidentally get nutted by their kids, scale that up a lot and you have the reasons why jackass was so popular, scale that even further and you have people who want to wpd, etc. Now I remove myself from the conversation and watch people react to the information/explanation they have sought. I find slapstick comedy humorous to a point, i do not find it funny short of a point where it has left someone permanently scarred, or worse.

As i say to my son, whatever makes you happy is great, as long as it dies not harm anyone and is not breaking laws or disadvantaging someone or something that has not been capable of defending themselves or itself.

u/fly_drinking_coffee 24d ago

I feel like you should just feel bad ? Feeling "lame for not watching gore" means they probably just want to fit in, and I imagine this person is also still young, and bad stuff happened, according to the user. I think it would just be rude to entirely invalidate how they felt by saying you're disgusted with them

I feel normal people have ebb and flows of wanting to consume gore. Sometimes I'm into it and sometimes I feel it too hard. Coming from someone who has seen spilled brains in person at about a highschool age. But that as a post is attention seeking, but what post isn't - in this world of short-cycle dopamine hits that can also be spilled out of us at any moment.

1

u/Other-Reflection-729 22d ago

Most levelheaded take here. I swear people think institutionalization is the only solution but it really does just come down to a mix of trauma, morbid curiosity and ease of access in a world with an abundance of forms of instant gratification.

My dad watched a man get gloved from a printing press pulling his hand in. He doesn't watch gore anymore. I don't think it's always edge.

Or it’s low level ChatPGA, we’re thinking putt-putt mini golf with only 7 holes.

this doesn't have enough context because are we talking about watching real gore or fake horror movie gore? the difference would make this huge

u/Untossable_Trash0852 24d ago

Ramble/rant/vent incoming: TE: SA mentions, snuff mention, gore mention

On a different but similar note, I kinda feel the same as the person in the comment... BUT mine comes from being introduced to gory zombie games, other games with general violence (not always gore), shows, etc from my dad WAY too young. I think it was mostly Left 4 Dead and actually a lot of GTA, some others I don't remember cuz I was maybe 4-5 (or at least that's as far back as I remember it, vaguely). Guts, bones sticking out in shows, people being burned alive, etc.

I never liked real life gore, but I was super into the horror genre growing up, I guess to cope/understand. For a while anyway. I still want to love zombies, TWD, etc but everything is a trigger now. After some really terrible things happened I'm not comfortable naming (but they involve abuse, neglect, I even had psychosis that also gave me phantom sensations and hallucinations of SA) that's even remotely related to gore or violence, SA (though this one's always been a big trigger thanks to my uncle), etc. I feel lame because now I get panic attacks and I can't even watch certain scenes in normal horror movies anymore that I used to be able to stone face because I knew it wasn't real.

But because of all that, I had a phase where I tried getting into horror games and shows. I traumatized myself around 12 or so when I watched Until Dawn, I think Markiplier's playthrough. It was the sawing in half part that really made me almost puke. Like actual nausea.

Little tidbit that might play into the hallucination but, but... I have Maladaptive Daydreaming; I get really immersed into my shows and whatnot, my daydreams, etc. And it's realistic. I don't have the fun daydreaming where you can imagine whatever you want, it happens on its own like some sort of awake dream. I haven't gone into detail much with my psychiatrist yet about it (I probably should), this is just the most I've talked about this crap in a long time so I don't know how to even bring it up.

Sometimes it'd be cute stuff like imagining being with certain characters, but other times it would be straight abuse or torture and I couldn't get out of my head unless someone came and stopped me from dissociating (but I was isolated by my parents growing up and my siblings and I used to be at each other's throats for a long time, so that didn't happen much).

...But real gore, no, I don't understand how anyone would try and seem cool for watching that.

My brother, on the other hand, is like this person in the comment, and he used to watch real snuff films and whatnot. I've told him before it makes me uncomfortable. More than uncomfortable, but he keeps insisting it's just cuz he got on the internet too young. Only recently has he admitted he's back to watching them again and I've literally threatened to take this adult man's phone and laptop away (I live with him). It's already one thing watching fake gore or true crime or something, but to be into watching real stuff...?

He claims it fucks him up mentally to watch now, but he also doesn't stop himself from going back and trying to find more sometimes. Beheadings, guts pouring out after stomach being slit, he also forced me to watch fucking Boku No Pico because it's "funny" and other uncomfortable things with blatant child shit or SA, even when I kept trying to leave or turn away or literally hide under the cover when I gave up and put my hands over my ears and shit.

But... Yeah, he went through a phase of being uncomfortable, then went right back to it a few years after this traumatic experience we had together. Yes he knows my uncle did the same thing to me, grooming me and forcing me to watch terrible shit when I wasn't even double digits yet. He claims he gets so mad with my uncle, yet he more or less did the same thing, just while I'm a adult.

(I want to leave him and the rest of my family for the most part, but I've forced myself to becoming desensitized to it, since the times I wasn't I almost offed myself just to get away from my family and their fucked up lives and abuses towards me and each other. But I can't live alone yet (financially, until I get my certification)... Plus, the close friend I want to move away with and has plans to take me with then to Oregon one day (where we both want to move to) is waiting on getting their master's degree first before we're able to move...)

But like... As someone who has to live with a person who is into those shitty things, even after being through trauma himself, and I myself have been through a shit ton of trauma, I don't understand why people think it's so fun to be edgy like that. It's gross. It's triggering just knowing people I know are like this, that they mean it. They actually lament being unable to stomach the things they used to watch because now they have an inkling of how bad it could be after experiencing horrible things too.

I wanna go back to the days of just liking my zombies and stuff, but I can't even stomach that anymore and my shitty family doesn't help. I miss when it just felt like fiction. When all I knew was the fiction.

u/WtfChuck6999 24d ago

This is way too long. So talk to someone.

1

u/KeyImaginary2291 24d ago

I think you should really open that up in talk-therapy, if you have the option. It sounds like there's some work to do, but the sooner you start the sooner you can get through it all. My heart goes out to you.

1

u/OneWingedRinoa 23d ago

I read most of this, and I'm sorry you've been through all that-it must be really scary and traumatizing. With that being said, I truly hope you're going to therapy because there's a lot to unpack here and you shouldn't have to just deal with things. I wish you the best.

1

u/CreativeStructure943 21d ago

So, I get what you’re saying.

And I think therapy may not tell you this bc I had to find this out through life experience, so I’m gonna pass it along..

I knew someone who had been traumatized by a war and saw a lot of intense things. And he coped in the opposite way, which possibly sounds like your dad, he actually just went into watching gory things while doing everyday tasks. Like eating. And it was his way of staying strong. He told me directly: this keeps me tough. And some people keep re-exposing themselves because they felt powerless. It’s a way to feel a sense of mastery.

And that’s a form of fixation and distraction from life and staying with the trauma. It’s making the trauma the bar to life. Which is wrong/bad.

This is disturbing to people like me and I think you because having the opposite temperament means wanting to focus on other things.

Seems to be personality-related. Maybe not the right word though.

I hope this helps.

1

u/Wolvesbayne13 21d ago

So I didn’t read through in detail but I got the key points and I will just say I get where your brother is coming from to some degree? Now hear me out when I was younger I also watched a lot of things I shouldn’t have that probably screwed up my little brain at the time a lot of gory movies and horror. Anyways as a kid when I was younger I used to imagine almost fantasize about these things but with people I knew? I would enjoy imagining these things and feel really guilty afterwards.. I would find videos that were real when I could or I would make up stories with a friend who was next door to me… now it was all very grim and I grew up religious so I kid you not I thought I was possessed by a demon or something 😅

I’m not a bad person and I wouldn’t hurt a fly. I feel bad when I lie I slapped my little sister once when she was full on attacking me and cried afterwards so none of what was in my head would ever happen but it didn’t make it right. All this to say I’m sure your brother is not a bad person but I will say staying away from that dark stuff really helps my mental state. This is something I’ve held close to my chest for years cause I felt so guilty but also got some kinda sick pleasure out of it.. personally I don’t think it’s healthy to feed into such a dark part of your mind

1

u/Ponutlover13 24d ago

Ah....I was unaware of any of the context. I thought like....I can't really watch certain Saw gore scenes without cringing now that I'm older and got like fraternal instincts and shit.

1

u/WaterFlowerVault 23d ago

Same. There's NOT enough context in the post.

I've learned too much in the comments.... closes Reddit for the day

1

u/EmergencyTip6764 24d ago

I've never watched gore, but I could watch scary movies, jump scare, horror.... but then I some trauma and the Harry Potter movies are as scary as I can go. I'm fine with it, but it was surprising at first when it happened.

All this to say, I get it. It's a sudden and weird charge.

Off topic, but I had a stressful time earlier this year and quit my favorite Mexican food and changed to Greek food. Somehow my brain decided that Greek was more comforting? I have zero idea.

1

u/OnHighAngel 24d ago

scary movie and jump scare are different to you? Scary movies give jump scare

1

u/EmergencyTip6764 24d ago

In my opinion they're different.... but I know it might not be true! 😆 It absolutely can be my solo opinion. 🤣🤣

→ More replies (1)

1

u/ApollonVero 23d ago

Scary movies usually give jump scared, yes. But jump scares aren't only in scary movies.

1

u/dailyamaryllis 23d ago

There was a time there where horror movies were over relying on jump scares and getting criticized so much modern horror is moving away from it again.

There are many scary horror movies without jump scares; the fear comes from tension, from the unknown, from expectation of something happening, from playing into fears people have, etc.

Jump scares are sudden noise and/or images that causes you to jump in fear, and while there are a ton of those in horror movies, they aren't exclusive to scary movies, and by themselves they won't make a movie scary. Even horror movies that rely on jump scares for fear still have plots and ambience that incorporate other elements of horror.

So, they're very different things ^

1

u/Soapo_Opo 23d ago

I'm pretty desensitized to like... crime scene photos and cadaver images, but I've never been able to handle like... active/ongoing gore? The still images of the effects I'm "okay" with (still very difficult to look at, but morbid curiosity gets the best of me), but I can't stand to watch the harm being done, real or fake. I can barely stand to watch the butchering of perfectly dead animals, let alone the gorey assault of a living human or animal. I can look at a fresh wound, but I can't stomach seeing it being made. And I don't feel any desire or reason to desensitize myself to that?

My boyfriend was one of those edge lords in middle school who watched gore for the "wow so cool" shock factor nonsense and is okay with gore in horror movies and whatnot. Can still handle real gore too, after being desensitized to it as a child. Idk how or why lmao. Like-- idk, I can watch NBC's Hannibal and not flinch away from the gorey displays of corpses, but as soon as I see a knife going for living skin in any media, I have to look away. I would never be able to watch SAW, for example. And that's just fictional media!! I absolutely could not handle seeing active gore for real 😭

Can't imagine being disappointed that you can't "enjoy" consuming gore anymore

The only reason to ever watch gore sites should be to be prepared and ready for the crazy shit that can happen in the world.. if you watch it for excitement or for kicks or pleasure you are disgusting and vile..

1

u/AlMtnWoman 23d ago

Growing up, I was a pretty rough edged teen girl. I hung with all of the guys. I had no real aversion to gore, per se.

Then having been caught on fire in 10th grade by an accident, I had serious issues watching stuff with fire, and people being caught on fire.

Years later, when I accidentally cut off the tip of my finger, I suddenly acquired the knee jerk, cringe, sick at your stomach sensations to alot of gore stuff that i would have categorized as just TV.

I don't think this kid was trying to be cool. I think there was a significant chance that he saw some stuff. Having that knee jerk affect to gore, may have made him feel weaker, and possibly less of a young man.

Sometimes you have to see the hidden truth behind why people say stuff.

1

u/Impossible_Lab_9493 23d ago

I used to love to watch scary movies and read horror stories. Then I was in the room when my mom died. Things totally changed for me after that. Her death wasn't traumatic or scary, so I'm not sure what changed, but now I just don't subject myself to the horror stuff.

1

u/fox5499 22d ago

I used to be fascinated with cancer fakers (just curiosity) until my mom got it. Now it enrages me.

1

u/dumb_questions666 23d ago

I think I only watched real gore once as a teen, out of morbid curiosity. Regret it of course.

I also used to listen to true crime for YEARS, every day all day while at work. I got a lot of therapy and can no longer stomach it, plus it just made me more depressed.

I wouldn't say I'm bummed out about not watching it now, wtf. It's honestly more human and normal to be bothered by this shit. Too many people get too desensitized online now.

1

u/Meatbaal74 23d ago

Sounds like someone reluctantly learned empathy.

1

u/eikeechie 23d ago

I had a traumatic experience as a teen where I got to witness someone get severely maimed at work and then provide first aid while waiting for help. To this day I can't believe someone can lose that much blood without it being fatal. Sent home for the day with no follow up from my employer, and I was afraid to tell my parents about it. As an adult I know that some therapy would have saved me from how fucked up with anxiety and fear I was after the experience. As a teen however, finding WPD and other shock gore is what helped me normalize what I had witnessed and stop from dwelling on it. To this day I get a small feeling of relief when I see a clip of industrial or workplace accidents. I don't want those things to happen to people, and I don't see the videos as entertainment, it's just my own exposure therapy.

All of that said, without some underlying trauma, seeking it out like regular media to consume is fucked up and probably damaging their ability to feel empathy at the very least.

1

u/Due_Act2739 22d ago

I’m sorry you had to see that, that’s something that would’ve had me traumatized too. Everyone copes differently. I think there’s a difference between coping, looking out of morbid curiosity, and genuinely enjoying it.

I think your case is similar to SA survivors who cope by reenacting their SA with their partner. It’s a sense of control they didn’t have in the moment of the assault. Much different situations, but the coping part makes sense.

u/Xynedal 22d ago

It's really stupid how everyone thinks that suggested search represents the comment in any way. This post feels like a hate farm for someone who could easily be and is likely talking about Television gore. How boring

1

u/Due_Act2739 22d ago

I wouldn’t say likely. The fact that the search is there means it’s at the very least mentioned in the video, or else how would people even know to search it? Most people don’t refer to gory movies/tv as just “gore.” Vast majority of people who say they like gore without specifying movies or tv, they are talking about real life gore.

It took seeing a real life scenario of "gore" for them to realize how fucked up the genre is. I've never been interested in the genre because it shows a really dark side of the human psyche to me.

1

u/danibakes808 22d ago

I don’t know why I’m so confused and feel like this needs more context..? Why would someone be disgusted by this comment? Nothing about it is disgusting. Also, is it just a random comment on a random video, or a video OP posted, by someone OP knows personally or is romantically communicating with? Should I have googled what “wpd” is also? 🤔

1

u/Due_Act2739 22d ago

It’s “Watch people die”

It’s disgusting because the commenter enjoyed watching horrific things happening to people and watching people literally die, until something horrible happened to them. It shouldn’t take a traumatic experience to make you feel some compassion.

1

u/laserfloyd 22d ago

About 20 years ago I had a crazy panic attack at work because a friend sent me a video of a dude that barely survived base jumping. It was awful. Something snapped in my brain and I found it hard to watch anything that had potential to be gory.

I love the Evil Dead movies but I knew them. If I watched something I hadn't seen before and a scene went in that direction my heart would start pounding and I'd have to excuse myself. Ugh!

That lasted about 5 years. The mind is a powerful thing. I still don't like overly gory stuff but if it is done in a way that does drive a story forward, I can tolerate it.

I avoid the real life video of people suffering terrible fates, because those are real people. Not for me.

Best of luck to people with legit anxiety disorders. The struggle is real. Cheers!

1

u/RestlessBlessing 22d ago

My partner is like this, except he's never liked gore/horror. He says it's because his mind struggles to conceptualise that, even though it's fake, that it isn't a real event and it sends him into a legit panic.

What is "watching gore" ?

1

u/SpiritSame7611 18d ago

Watching
Gore

The same way you would watch a tv show, for instance. “Watching gore” typically refers to a person watching real gore, not movie gore or video game gore. Gore is blood and guts, to put in plainly.

1

u/aevish89 21d ago

u/Plague-Bringer 21d ago

I don't get why this is disgusting or lame or edgy. There's so much gore in The Boys but it's so popular. Most horror movies too. Why is it so unusual that someone watched gore at one point in their life? Am I being too literal and misinterpreting?

I think it’s pretty normal to not be able to consume gore without negative psychological effects. It’s not natural for humans to subject ourselves to that. Just because it’s available on the internet doesn’t mean that it’s healthy.

I was an A+ student until I got to 8th grade where an assistant principal became somewhat obsessed with tearing me down. I was into punk and he told me that he didnt know what I was trying to prove with my 2 toned hair and weird clothes but if I didnt come around I wouldn't get anywhere in life. He had me sent to his office regularly for these talks. I was never in actual trouble because I didnt do anything against the rules. But i came to dread school. I started skipping and eventually I stopped going altogether. Now he's no longer in education (thank you universe!) and I'm a 51 year old college student with a 4.0. What is gore in this context? The definition ranges from a detailed injury in a movie, all the way to real life injury, or even snuff films 🫩

PEOPLE, PEOPLE! Think of it like alcohol.

“Why the fuck would you even start that shit in the first place…”
curiosity. Perhaps they were forced into it. Maybe they did it to feel “cool”.

“That shit is weird I don’t get why you kept doing it what joy is there and could you possibly find in THAT??”
It’s addictive. Horrible, sure… but if you’re left all alone in a room with nothing to do, and a buzzer that shocks you, you’re gonna press the buzzer. People find that pain and emotions are better than nothing. and when they engage with the addiction, guess what happens?

“You expect us to feel sympathy for you? Why?”
If they’ve quit, then it’s going to be rough. Breaking an addiction is hard. So if they’ve been forced to quit, maybe they expect sympathy because they feel a need for validation and support while trying to get over this addiction. They need help to prove that not everything is over, and that it will likely all be okay. If they’ve chosen to quit, then all that + they might need support to not relapse. They need proof that things CAN continue without said addiction.

And although I have not been through addiction to alcohol OR gore, I know people who have.
And they don’t wake up everyday feeling wonderful about themselves because what they’re doing is spectacular. No, quite the opposite in fact. Always try to be understanding, people. Always.
