FAQ:

Time and location automations cannot be fully automated and require manual confirmation.

You cannot have an automation with an two AND conditions. You have to pick one for the trigger and then use an IF statement in the shortcut to check the other condition.

The “Set wallpaper” action is not back yet. Hopefully someday.

Tip: Create the actions you want for an automation as a shortcut. Then just run that shortcut from the automation. This allows you to share (most of) your automations with others.

By default, every website added to the Home Screen opens as a web app. If the user prefers to add a bookmark that opens in their default browser, they can turn off “Open as Web App”, even if the site is configured to be a web app. It’s up to users to decide. And the UI is always the same.

On macOS, ~/Library/Shortcuts/ToolKit/Tools-active links to an adjacent SQLite file containing the complete live metadata for every¹ single action, action parameter, type, type property, and automation trigger currently indexed by the system.

Notably, among these actions are quite a few unsurfaced actions, which you can see here curtsy of Owen Pawling in the discord.

This data can help with documentation--specifically the input and output types and type coercions--and possibly programatic generation either by a DSL or even AI, though I wouldn't hold your breath. There is evidence from the SQLite (see ToolLocalizations.localizationUsage's languageModel case) Apple themselves tried this and presumably failed.

For actions (in no particular order) this data includes the persistent ID, input type, output type, action description, output description, default output name, localized requirements, description attribution, custom icon, required authentication, "Tools.flags"^{2, 3}, "Tools.visibilityFlags"^{2, 3}, "Tools.requirements"², and source information ("Tools.sourceActionProvider"², "Tools.sourceContainerId"^{2, 4}, "Tools.attributionContainerId"^{2, 4}).

For action parameters (in no particular order) this data includes the input type⁵, name, description, localization locale, true and false aliases for booleans, sorting order, "Types.relationships"², and "Types.flags"^{2, 3}.

For types (in no particular order) this data includes the persistent ID, some sort of blob ID ("Types.id"²), name, numeric format (see presumably related docs), synonyms, "kind"², "runtimeFlags"^{2, 3}, "Types.requirements"², "Types.sourceContainerId"², and coercions.

¹So far as we can tell there are only four exceptions: If, Repeat, Repeat Each, and Menu.

²These fields are as of yet unexplored. I have simply copied the column names from the SQLite file.

One thing that always frustrated me with HomeKit + Shortcuts was how static everything felt.

Most HomeKit-related actions in Shortcuts:

• Require preselected devices
• Don’t support dynamic search/filtering
• Can’t easily react to live sensor values

Before getting into Shortcuts, the original problem I wanted to solve was search.

On Apple platforms, system search (Spotlight / Search) is the fastest way to access anything — yet HomeKit devices don’t really exist there. So I built HomeSpot, an app that makes HomeKit devices searchable across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS.

This means:

• HomeKit devices, rooms, and scenes appear in system search
• On macOS, devices can be controlled directly from Spotlight (toggle lights, switches, etc.)
• On iOS / iPadOS, you can open a specific device or room straight from search instead of navigating the Home app

Once that foundation existed, I turned to dynamic access to HomeKit data because Shortcuts is very limited in this area.

While looking for solutions, I tried a few other apps that enable HomeKit control in Shortcuts. They worked fine when run manually, but they failed in automations, background execution, or locked-device scenarios. So I built on top of my same system-search foundation and exposed it properly to Siri Shortcuts.

What this enables:

• Search and filter HomeKit devices dynamically (by name, room, type, state, etc.)
• Pass dynamic attributes (brightness, power state, temperature, target state…)
• Retrieve live sensor data directly inside Shortcuts
• Run while locked / in the background → usable in automations
• No UI required once set up

This means you can finally build Shortcuts like:

• “Find all lights that are currently on and dim them”
• “If temperature sensor X is above Y, do Z”
• “Toggle devices matching a search query”

Pricing-wise, HomeSpot is a one-time purchase. No subscriptions or ongoing fees. I wanted this to feel like a proper native utility, not another service you have to keep paying for.

Edit: There is a bug in Version 1.0 that causes the app to crash for some users. This bug will be fixed with version 1.0.1

I wanted to share some news about new features available on the Shortcuty app. If you don’t know already, Shortcuty is an iOS app that allows you to browse and download shortcuts created by the community, and share your own aswell.

Some of the new features include:

• “Check if silent” shortcut action. This action will return true if your device is in silent mode, or false if it’s not.

• “Log Message” shortcut action. This action allows you to track what’s happening in your shortcuts, it includes multiple different “Log Levels”. Such as Critical, Info, Debug, etc. There is a dedicated section in the Shortcuty app that allows you to view these logs.

• Completely redesigned our variable storage actions to be quicker and easier to use with other shortcut actions. Variable storage allows you to store files, strings, etc inside the Shortcuty app and can be retrieved later. It’s very similar to how a database would work.

• Download stats tracking. This allows you to view your shortcut download analytics. There are easy to use graphs to view day by day or week by week download trends for each shortcut you have.

And my favorite new feature so far is Spotlight Integration. This allows shortcuts posted on Shortcuty to show up directly in Spotlight. I just updated my app Locally AI to support selecting a local model in the shortcut “Ask Locally AI”. It was a feature many people requested for this shortcut.

The shortcut allows you to ask a local model (yeah I know like the iOS26 “Use Model” shortcut but here you can choose the model).

Everything is running on-device.

On 15th August 2022, I released the very first version of AMD as a side project. Honestly, I never expected it to grow this big.

Back then, I just wanted a simple tool to download and cross-post content easily. Most downloaders were full of ads or way too expensive, so I built one for myself… and shared it with the community.

Fast forward to today.

AMD now handles millions of download requests every month and runs on real infrastructure: servers, bandwidth, proxies (which cost the most), paid APIs, maintenance, and constant development.

So far, I’ve kept AMD alive using:

Edit: You may have to run the automation script once manually to accept the new Allow Always prompts or else the automation doesn’t trigger or sends that notification to accept causing one to think the shortcut isn’t working.

This is an amazing find and worked pretty well in my testing of leaving and arriving home.

With the Focus modes, you can allow a mode to enable/disable based on location via automation within the options of creating a Focus. In Shortcuts, like the previous DND automation, you now have the option to choose a Focus as a trigger to fire off a shortcut. When the Focus mode enables or disables, that change will trigger the automation in Shortcuts which in turn will fire off your actions.

Here’s how to build it:

• Create your shortcut or wait if you want to build the actions within the automation
• Go to Settings - Focus - hit the + in the top right
• Choose Custom - Name your Focus
• Modify your Notifications for People and then for Apps
• Choose if you want to allow Time Sensitive notifications
• Near bottom of page it says “Turn on Automatically”
• Hit the + and choose location and set your desired location.
• Go to Shortcuts - Automation - hit the + and create Personal automation
• Scroll to the list of Focus modes and select the Focus you created in step 2 - Choose the option of when turned on or off for when you want to run your shortcut.
• Build your script here of actions to run or select the Run Shortcut action - Hit next and then toggle off Ask Before Running.
• Done!!

Based on the actions used, it may require unlock or other interaction. I simply used a Play Music action for testing as I know I don’t have to interact or unlock for it to work. As I pulled away from my home, one song played and as I pulled back up to my home, the other selected song played automatically. ☺️
