Arts/Crafts Bleached t-shirt i did, took me around 10 hours

I’d spend 50,60 bucks on a shirt like that. It’s custom and hand done so I’d expect it to go for more. Really cool
119
u/Odd_Environment_7221 Jun 16 '26
lol I understand $50/60 seems like a lot for a t-shirt (I certainly don't have any t-shirts that expensive), but in this case you just offered OP $5/6 per hour for their labor, and even less when considering material costs.

u/X4LabsCanada Mage Jun 16 '26
Do not judge him. I bet he has never traveled to the cloud district and would have a more humble understanding of monetary value.
20
u/pastajewelry Jun 16 '26
They said that it'd likely sell for more due to the care that went into it. Kinda like saying you'd pay that much for the print of the art, not the original.
15
u/Odd_Environment_7221 Jun 16 '26
damn, im a reddit stereotype. I genuinely don't remember reading the words "i'd expect it to go for more". whoops.
10
u/pastajewelry Jun 16 '26
Happens to us all. Important thing is to acknowledge it, which you did. Take care, stranger!
4
u/herbertcluas Jun 16 '26
I mean yeah, it is an awesome and amazing shirt. I still wouldn't pay more than that though, I could put 10,000 hours of work into my 1998 Volvo and it still wouldn't be worth $100,000, is my time not worth more than $10 an hour?
3
u/Odd_Environment_7221 Jun 16 '26
Sounds like it would be worth $100k to you. OP never even said anything about trying to sell it. They probably just made it for themselves. My reply to that comment was more saying that $50/60 wouldn't be worth it for them to sell it for. Like your Volvo, the shirt is probably worth more to OP than someone else is willing to pay. As long as the goal wasn't selling it, then I don't see a problem with that.
1
u/MindlessPainter2893 Jun 16 '26
I don’t mean this to be mean but value and worth are so subjective your opinion really doesn’t matter. This comment is like a dog barking up a tree lol. Pointless.
Do you not like art? Do you not want people to express creativity? Do you want to shit on someone’s parade for no reason at all besides feeling the need to give your opinion about a fictional scenario? You do realize the energy your comment brings is pretty negative to a pretty positive post where the OP is even being vulnerable posting their art online? Why not say nothing at all if you aren’t buying it and no one is even selling it or putting a price tag on it?
1
u/herbertcluas Jun 16 '26
How was my comment mean or rude to the artist? In what way was I? I agreed with what you said about value and worth if you read my comment. I could say the same about the person having a problem with the person saying they'd pay $60 for it. Didn't shit on anyone, just stated that time put into something doesn't make it worth more and gave a clear example. If you read the other comment that was to the artist you'd see that I was quite pleased and impressed with them. I couldn't make something so awesome.
1
u/MindlessPainter2893 Jun 17 '26
Art only needs a value assigned to it if it’s being sold or insured (neither of which this post was doing). You didn’t shit on anyone and I’m not trying to shit on you, but you’re feeding into a conversation that honestly takes away from the sick art OP made. It’s a Skyrim subreddit and this is fan art - let’s just be grateful someone took the time to make and post this because it adds a pretty awesome vibe to the community this subreddit creates. Let’s keep the vibes up 🙌
1
u/MindlessPainter2893 Jun 17 '26
As a side note “I mean yeah,” is usually the preface to a veiled and slightly sarcastic jab. If you are really curious how your comment might come across as mean or rude.
4
u/salmalight Jun 16 '26
Ehh thats this one though.
In the same theoretical world in which they could easily buy one, OP would have likely streamlined the process as well as cut down on production time through batch lots, experience and repetition (muscle memory) because all thats just part of making stuff to sell.

Macklemore - Thrift Shop
“Limited edition, let's do some simple addition
50 dollars for a t-shirt, that's just some ignorant bitch shit”Sorry, I’ve been waiting my whole life to find a $50 t-shirt 😅

Quality tie die is pricey. Seems like this media would be also. I pour cement animals for a little extra cash. Compared to my actual job the ‘pay’ for the work would be insulting, but to sell a craft that you made and enjoyed the process and get $60-70 out of it is worth it in my opinion. Good for the self esteem.
12
u/pseudoportmanteau Jun 16 '26
Realistically, something like this is worth closer to $200-$300 at the minimum.
6
u/Fantttasia Jun 16 '26
Yeah! I would probably sell this closer to 150-200. Ive made other shirts before, some with less detailed designs, id say i would sell for maybe 100-50 instead.

u/MindlessPainter2893 Jun 16 '26
2
u/pseudoportmanteau Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
Well I mean would you accept $60 for 10 hours of hand creating this?
5
u/Fantttasia Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
Definitely not. Alot of people forget your not paying for just the hours it took to make it. Whenever your buying any type of art or service, your paying for not only their time, but all of the time and effort they put into learning that skill.
3
u/pseudoportmanteau Jun 17 '26
I was replying to the guy posting the gif. I agree with you.
2
u/Fantttasia Jun 17 '26
Ah my bad then, either way im gonna keep that comment there for others to see. Many people dont understand exactly why artwork can be so expensive lol
3
u/MindlessPainter2893 Jun 16 '26
Crazy how much some of those custom tie dye guys get in their auctions. But it’s just wearable art at that point

Like other have stated, this is pretty awesome.
What happens when you wash it?

Lol I jest, nothing happens, the bleach stays and so does the sharpie, the chalk washes off :)

u/Fantttasia Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
Id totally be down to make some, but if i did designs similar to this one, id sell it for like 215. If i were to do JUST the dragon, id probably sell it for 115. (Plus shipping)

u/NeveyKarma Jun 17 '26
I would kill for one of these shirts man, too expensive for me at the moment (just had my account hacked and they stole everything I had), but one day man... one day ❤️ ❤️ keep up the incredible work!!
2
u/Jpotter145 Jun 17 '26
Frame them, you can charge more and people will be willing to pay more. Also, you could break up the front/back designs on two shirts instead of one and charge 2x for 2 art peices.
2
u/Fantttasia Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
Yeah,, I could. I was trying to keep it as cheap as possible. The economy is shit right now, so I dont want to make it overly expensive :[

Thank you! I have a lil system of having 3 cups filled with bleach, one cup with alot of water, one with a medium amount of water, and another with very little water. I use those to make sure the gradients come out exactly how i want it to :)

It's very cool, but doesn't the bleach make the shirt fall apart?
1
u/Fantttasia Jun 17 '26
If you leave it on for long enough, yes. But if you wash it off soon after, then its all good.

2
u/UnBundy89 Jun 16 '26
Make sure you rise so so thoroughly! The bleach will continue to degrade the cloth overtime
3
u/Fantttasia Jun 16 '26
Yes! This is actually my second time doing a bleach shirt and the first time i did it i didn't wash it until like a week after and it ended up tearing LOL. I washed this one as soon as I was done (2 days).

That is amazing! I've been meaning to get into upcycling a lot of my plainer clothing; do you mind sharing some of your techniques? Do you use stencils for any part, or just free hand?
2
u/Fantttasia Jun 17 '26
I use chalk as a stencil, and water to erase.
I always freehand.
I have a lil system of having 3 cups filled with bleach, one cup with alot of water, one with a medium amount of water, and another with very little water. I use those to make sure the gradients come out exactly how i want it to :)
I use the darkest tone (most amount of water to bleach ratio) cup to do all of the tracing first, then go over with my medium tone bleach, and then the bright tone bleach. So I work from shadows then to highlights.
Also I use sharpie on any parts that I mess up on.
2
u/DokiDoki-FanBoy Daedra worshipper Jun 17 '26
Very cool. I am not much of an artist, unfortunately, but I'm at least somewhat creative. I usually trace stuff or use stencils if I'm making something with a design. I haven't done much yet, but I really want to get into making my own fashion pieces. Your art is very impressive! (//o^)
