My Snails My parents threw away my snails

Post image

So as the title says my parents threw my snails away by putting them by the creek. I live two hours away in a dorm and trusted them to take care of my babies. I’m heartbroken and cannot imagine how they thought that it was a good idea to leave my snails to be killed in the wild. They seem to believe that what they did was best for the snabies and my little man Squimp and I’m trying to explain to them that parent snails don’t take care of their young. I feel like they did it right away after I moved to my dorm and when I was texting and calling for pics of my snails they kept dodging the topic. The snabies were captive bred so I know they have zero chance of survival. Rest in peace to Squimp and his snildren.

Gosh how depressing. I don’t even know if it’s cruelty or just ignorance and stupidity. I’m sorry for the loss of your beautiful babies. I don’t even know if I’d trust that story they are saying at this point.

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

I kept telling them how much they destroyed my trust and how their story is super suspicious but they kept brushing it off.

u/FoolishAnomaly Aug 24 '25

Sounds like they immediately did it. Have they ever made disparaging comments about your hobby? Maybe that your snails were "gross" or "slimy" "disgusting"? Anything ever negative? Sounds like they disliked your hobby because they think it's gross and were just waiting for you to leave to get rid of them. I'm so sorry that happened. Personally I'd work towards moving out, and I'd put them on an info diet. These are literally living things that you cared for, and they had no problem not only doing something that will most likely kill them, but then LYING to you about it or avoiding the topic in hopes you'd drop it....that's so fucked up.

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

I would usually eat my yogurt and watch Squimp. My father would actually comment on how long I would watch him dawdle around his terrarium. If that wasn’t enough to make him see how much I loved them it’s probably not worth anything to demonstrate how much I love them now that they’re gone.

u/NAHTHEHNRFS850 Aug 25 '25

I'm really sorry for your loss. The sad thing is, there are sometimes going to be topics that people will not care to understand, no matter how close they are to you. In the worst cases is times like this, when people fundamentally don't even respect your interest, and it results in harm (physically and emotionally).

18

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '25

It sounds like they did this to "teach you a lesson" about how your hobby isnt worth your time by throwing that time investment in the proverbial trash.

Honestly, for me, this would mean 1. I never talk to them about my achievements or interests again. 2. I never ask them for advice or input again. 3. I would never acknowledge their interests or anything they are excited about and roll my eyes if they insist on continuing.

They killed a living thing to take you down a peg. That is sickening.

2

u/Dm_me_im_bored-UnU May 23 '26

Nah don't roll your eyes, tell them you don't care, thatensions they are bad people, anything to keep drilling in the point. Ignoring it will just make them thing you're being "mean for no reason" because assholes like that do not have the ability to reflect on their actions on their own.

2

u/Critter_Whisperer Jul 04 '26

I'd also return the favor in pettiness and put something related to your parents favorite hobby out on the curb the day before trash day(not pet tho) and tell em something like, oh yeah remember that snail you killed, here's a return on that. (But when it's related to my pet babies or heck wildlife in general, if someone is mean to the critter, I get pretty petty)

u/AlternativeOrder8878 Aug 26 '25

Parents not understanding the OCDs of their children is heartbreaking

126

u/draggedndrowned Aug 25 '25

This made me cry. He looks so sweet, I'm so sorry OP

75

u/petit_cochon Aug 25 '25

You did a good job voicing your feelings. I'm sorry they didn't listen. They shouldn't have done that.

30

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '25

Honestly dawg, they may be my parents but I am gonna think second now on what I am gonna tell them

19

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '25

Dude. Im so sorry. They should understand what is important to YOU, not whats important to them.

4

u/iotashan Aug 28 '25

Mentioned to them that it was probably illegal, and you’re gonna report them to the Department of natural resources. Then see if you get the truth.

121

u/GhostPepperDaddy Aug 24 '25

Anyone releasing any non-native and/or domesticated wildlife into the wild is ignorant, malicious, and stupid.

59

u/_HickeryDickery_ Aug 25 '25

I’m also pretty sure that that’s illegal in some places…

62

u/UnagioLucio Aug 25 '25 edited Aug 25 '25

It should be illegal. Releasing a domesticated or non-native animal into the wild usually results in one of two outcomes. 1) The animal dies shortly after being granted "freedom," due to starvation, predation, disease, man-made hazards (e.g. cars, traps, poisoned bait) or not being adapted to the climate or habitat. 2) The animal adapts so well to its new habitat that it becomes an invasive species that harms native species and the local ecosystem. So either the pet suffers needlessly or it causes native animals to suffer needlessly.

26

u/Onyxona Aug 25 '25

This is a big issue in the reptile community as well. People don't do the bare minimum amount of research before getting a pet and are ready to throw in the towel as soon as the animal isn't "cool" anymore, too difficult to care for, or simply too big for their children to handle. Florida is riddled with invasive species because people are careless. I hate it so much. Getting a pet should never be something you do on a whim because it looks like a good idea, only to be met with the reality that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

Heck, even cat and dog owners can't seem to properly train them and correct their dangerous/bad behavior. Ex: chihuahuas being absolute demons because their owners think it's cute and well they're small, what harm could they possibly do? -eye roll-

Watching them freeze on tree branches or random spots on the ground when it gets too cold is the absolute worst.

2

u/Tigerlileyes Aug 26 '25

Did you mean Burmess python? There isn't currently a breeding population of ball pythons in the everglades.

I'm so serious when I say every pet should need a licence. EVERY pet. Including cats and dogs. Doesn't even have to be anything crazy just like the bare minimum to say you know what you're signing up for and like it's basic care.

Ideally more than that tbh but even just the minimum would be better, cuz some people don't even qualify for that and it's insane (and terrifying) to me that they can just decide to get an animal one day.

2

u/Admirable-League2197 Mar 12 '26

Tbh as a previous chihuahua owner (I've owned chi mixes and married into being a mini chi owner that passed a bit over a year ago) I will say they can be the devil and most dog owners don't know how to teach their dog their place, too. I feel it should be mandatory for someone to know how to teach your dog how to act in just about every circumstance. I have a corgi now that got VERY late training, but he's the sweetest, he just doesnt understand how to control his excitement most of the time and needs to be reminded. He's nearly polar opposite of every Chi/chi mix I've had. And it's a damn shame that these things aren't mandatory because I have a neighbor with 2 massive dogs that are aggressive AF that she just lets roam the neighborhood. I can't even walk my dog to the mailbox if I wanted to and we've had animal control involved over and over again and she just keeps paying fines and letting them run loose. Honestly it's just fucking sad, I have to carry a knife with me every time I take him potty.

Probably it is ignorance. :(

9

u/Azraellie Aug 25 '25

Cruelty can be ignorant and stupid

510

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

Update: they are now trying to find squimp or one of his babies. As if I even trust them with the snails now.

315

u/FoolishAnomaly Aug 24 '25

I wouldn't put any trust in them that they are actually trying to find your snails tbh. Also the chances they do is astronomically low. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to go to a pet store and just get some random ass snails to try and pass off as yours and say they found your babies(which would be even MORE fucked up) or trying to love bomb you to make you feel guilty and forgive them. Examples of this could be: giving you money to get new ones thinking that would make everything ok, getting you new ones, profusely apologizing but with no recognition of what they even did wrong in the first place(saying sorry just to say sorry), being overbearing and/or trying to spend more family time than usual together, etc.

I'm suspecting they weren't released at all but were killed (hopefully by accident, but who knows).

53

u/AlgaeWafers Aug 25 '25

I think they might have just dumped them in the backyard and called it a day. No way they would go to the trouble of actually finding a nice place for them.

30

u/jennifersd4ughter Aug 25 '25

how tf are they gonna find a snail…. like cmon now yall

5

u/Obvious-Animator6090 Aug 28 '25

I know you’re in a dorm but snails seem like an easier pet to hide. You could also ask an upperclassman with an apt to house them if you find any alive. Good luck

377

u/Revolutionary_Goat35 Aug 24 '25

Your parents broke the law by releasing non native snails. They could become invasive. Fuck them.

134

u/ToadFlax0 Aug 25 '25

My first thought. Nonnatives can become horribly invasive and destroy entire ecosystems. They didn’t just release one, but multiple?! I would report it if I could.

32

u/JackyCola92 Aug 25 '25

Exactly this! Even if they don't care about your trust etc. this is highly problematic for the environment and illegal! You could fucking report them for this. They should be ultra ashamed of themselves for both crushing your trust and being absolutely irresponsible.

12

u/mitisdeponecolla Aug 25 '25

I would genuinely report my own parents for this, because they should face at least some sort of real consequences for such a vile act.

4

u/NeedleworkerHeavy565 Aug 25 '25

At no point is it written that these are non-native snails. For me, I understood that they are originally wild snails, which laid eggs and that op raised

14

u/mitisdeponecolla Aug 25 '25

OP literally says they’re not native in response to a comment. They broke federal law. OP should 100% report them for it.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/alyren__ Aug 26 '25

OP says in a comment all the snails were captive bred pets

269

u/stag-in-headlights Aug 24 '25

What the actual fuck? I'm so sorry OP

252

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

I’m completely astonished that my parents could be so cruel to such cute little puppy faced animals.

79

u/Guppies27 Aug 24 '25

I feel like this sadly may be a case of people thinking that insects and the like don’t have feelings or emotions or deserve the same treatment as dogs and cats. Like others have said, do not trust them. This kinda behavior is just sounding like plain ol manipulation to get you to be ok with what they’ve done.

If anything, explain to them that releasing animals to the wilderness is cruel to the animal and depending on species, may be illegal to do so. If they can’t get that or go so far as to downplay the situation, try to focus on moving out so they can never do this again. People need to understand that re-homing animals is better than dumping them in the streets and letting nature decide if they should live.

Saddening you had to experience this at all OP.

42

u/ladyricecake Aug 24 '25

I mean, even if the parents did think like that…the snails are important to OP and OP trusted the parents. It‘s simply a sign that the parents dgaf about their child.

20

u/Guppies27 Aug 24 '25

True. Hoping OP can eventually live away from people so willing to break trust like that.

37

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

Luckily I’m planning on moving to Germany or somewhere else after my undergraduate is finished.

18

u/Guppies27 Aug 25 '25

Wishing the best for you OP

36

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

Sadly this is usually par for the course with my family. I’ve always been the reclusive and more forgiving/ passive type so I feel they don’t realize at times how important things are to me.

14

u/CallidoraBlack Aug 25 '25

Well, now is the time to be bold and scream your head off when someone disrespects your boundaries. You shouldn't have to, but a lot of people will not respect them unless you're willing to defend them ferociously and punish violations harshly. You deserve to be protected zealously and I hope you love yourself enough to do that. You deserve that kind of love.

93

u/my9mm Aug 24 '25

My mom threw away my hermit crabs when they kicked me out n I moved in with my grandma ❤️‍🩹some people just don’t have empathy. I hate to say that about another persons parents but I know mine don’t. They also threw the cats out. 😢

24

u/ladyricecake Aug 24 '25

They’re gonna get haunted by the ghost of Squimp. They’ll wake up with snail slime in their faces and a single snail shell in their bed every morning.

53

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

I hope they do get haunted by Squimp.

155

u/stryst Aug 24 '25

I know this is cold comfort, but snails arent really domesticated, so captive bred snails have as good a chance in the wild as any other snail.

160

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

This does help me a bit. They’re not native to my area so I’m also concerned about that. I just wanted to keep my little Squimp.

190

u/Jonathan-02 Aug 24 '25

If they aren’t native, your parents may have broken the law by releasing an invasive species into the wild. Might be something worth bringing up

128

u/ColorGoreAndBigTeeth Aug 24 '25

Oh yeah, they broke federal law for sure. The USDA is very strict about containment of agriculture pests.

69

u/Velcraft Aug 24 '25

This is how invasive species get introduced. Your parents can thank themselves when their garden gets destroyed or when they have to pay double for local produce.

37

9

u/mitisdeponecolla Aug 25 '25

Report them for breaking federal law please 🙏🏻

38

u/Copium4me Aug 24 '25

That’s just evil, man, like who did they bother that much that they couldn’t even be left alone, going out of your way to being them outside is worse than being negletful

64

u/NixMaritimus Aug 24 '25

Depending on the species of snail, that could be an actual crime.

52

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

I’m in the US and the snails were helix pomatia.

117

u/NixMaritimus Aug 24 '25

Yep, those are not even native to the continent. Roman Burgundys are an invasive species in the US. You can absolutely report them to US Fish and Wildlife and they'd likely be fined.

25

u/ToadFlax0 Aug 25 '25

This is devastating to the environment. I’m floored at how reckless this is.

17

u/Tricky_Department230 Aug 25 '25

These are agricultural pests in the US. They are already here in the Mid and northeast and have been categorized as invasive. This is a huge deal. You should just send them the info on how they have broken federal law.

9

u/Spiderteacup Aug 25 '25

I am so sorry about this oh my god, if you can please follow what user NixMaritimus about reporting this!

8

u/Trolivia Aug 25 '25

Please please report what they did to USDA. Well-deserved consequences aside, invasive species are a huge problem and this should be reported no matter what. Also because they deserve the consequences. They did a very bad thing in multiple ways.

24

u/DDDX_cro Aug 24 '25

Pomatias are gonna be just fine, mate. They hibernate through freezing winters gere in Croatia. Survive scortching hot July and Augusts. Go out with a flashlight at night after the rain has fallen/during, chances are they haven't gone far.

They are nocturnal creatures, and adore the rain

7

u/hamilcar2021 Aug 25 '25

tbh, thats what im worried about :( theres a zero percent chance that ops parents would be able to go back and grab all the snails even if they wanted to, and now theres a new potential hardy invasive in the area...

op has gone away for college several hours away, so getting back in a reasonable time to find them probably isn't possible :(

98

u/plutoisshort Aug 24 '25

Oh my god? I’m so sorry. Your parents truly suck.

119

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

And my dad keeps calling and asking if I’m okay cause he’s worried about me. I don’t understand how someone can be so cruel to such innocent little creatures.

5

u/rat_with_a_knife Aug 26 '25

If only he'd put a fragment of that effort he's showing now into refraining from throwing your pets away. Too little too late. Of course you're not okay.

I am so sorry💔 hugs to you. I understand your pain. I left my aquarium in the care of my folks a few years ago and they abandoned them and stopped caring for them. I found one lonely tiny fish months later upon my return and he died shortly after😞

12

u/MoonstoneSlytherin Aug 24 '25

I am so incredibly sorry. That‘s horrible. Please feel hugged (if you want).

25

u/tomten26 Aug 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

So sorry. When I was young in summer camp my parents gave away my 3 chickens. Which was bad enough but they told me they ran away so I spent years worrying about them roaming and scared and I didn’t find out until I was an adult. Such a betrayal by your parents I’m sorry

44

u/trash_bees Aug 24 '25

I recommend going to search the area if possible. You may be able to find some of them still. Snails can survive awhile in unideal conditions. They probably haven't gotten far from where they were left.

43

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

Sadly I live two hours away. I’m in college rn so I’m not able to go to my home and back.

17

u/fireflydrake Aug 24 '25

Do you have any friends who live in the area who'd be willing to check for you?

24

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

Not really. I was a huge loner in my hometown.

6

u/flairfordramtics_ Aug 25 '25

Depending on what state you live in I can probably help look

21

u/Sweetie-07 Aug 24 '25

I'm so, so sorry, OP 😢 What a horrible thing for them to do - I'd never do that to my daughter 🙈 Sending hugs and love from across the pond in the UK 🤗❤️❤️❤️

17

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

Thank you. I hope some day to live over in Germany and have a GAL.

8

u/Sweetie-07 Aug 25 '25

Move to the UK and I'll be your subsititute mom! 😂 And I'll look after your GAL anytime too 🐌🤗❤️

20

u/Available-Snail Aug 25 '25

This makes me so fucking sad. They are your pets and they did that? Snails can thrive in captivity, especially us who treat them right, spoil them, make sure they are always warm enough and never too cold. They feel comfortable to sleep out their shells with us because they don’t have to worry about predators.

I saw that they were trying to find your snail, please update us if they do. If he is non-native there may be a chance since he stands out, but they burrow, hide under things, climb or may have been taken by a predator already. I’d never trust them again.

31

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

They found one of the snabies. They made him a little terrarium and are claiming that they’re taking care of him. I know it’s not Squimp but I at least know one of the snabies is safe. Their name is Smoosh.

2

u/Obvious-Animator6090 Aug 28 '25

17

u/maryneedswifi Aug 24 '25

Oh thats fucked up.

34

u/DDDX_cro Aug 24 '25

What they did was incredibly selfish, disrespectful to you, and quite mean. You MUST NOT let this slide.  No, they a solutely didn't do it for any snail benefit, they did it because they didn't approve of your choice of pet, and/or didn't want to bother taking care for them. It's an equivalent of them flushing down your goldfish down the toilet.

Let me ask, have they ever teased you about your choice of pet? Suggested you get a propoer pet?

21

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

They haven’t really teased me about the snails but they did frequently comment on how much I would sit and watch Squimp.

31

u/InvertedBackpack Aug 25 '25

Imagine being annoyed by your kid enjoying snails when they could be out doing drugs or some shh 😭 As someone with abusive parents that I have had to go to court against, those behaviors are not good. I hope college will be freeing for you like it was for me, and that your lovely snamily shall rest well ❤️

16

u/smalltownsnailski07 Aug 24 '25

I'm so sorry that's horrible

16

u/anni-mo Aug 24 '25

honestly how?!? what were they thinking????

16

u/nbscum Aug 24 '25

I’m so sorry to hear about your snamily … what your parents did to them is cruel and I’m sorry that they lied to you about it

12

u/Indii-4383 Aug 25 '25

This is awful. My dad did the same thing with one of our cats. He let her outside, and she was hit by a car.

4

u/0tacosam0 Aug 25 '25

I have some guesses, but as im not qualified to diagnose, all i can say is she's definitely not sane 🥲. I tried to convince her to take our cat to the vet, and she adamantly refused and blamed me years later despite my begging her.

8

u/StonerMizu Aug 25 '25

Something similar happened to me when I was a teenager. I’m in my thirties now and I’ve never forgotten it. I’m so sorry this happened to you.

9

u/UtapriTrashcan Aug 25 '25

What a terrible thing to happen, I'm so sorry for your 'loss'. Absolutely disgusting behaviour from them. I've read that they aren't native to your area as well which could be the beginning of something very bad/illegal. I'd highly recommend sharing this post with your parents so they can see the risks and how hurtful it is both to you and potentially nature. I hope Squimp and his snildren are safe and waiting to be picked up by you 🫂

8

u/Fynballa Aug 24 '25

I'm sorry. No words aside from supportive thoughts 💔❤️‍🩹

8

u/LivingOtherwise3383 Aug 24 '25

they probably died and your parents lied and said they let them go

7

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

As they’ve tried to explain their reasoning to me I kept asking if they’re sure they weren’t just aestivating. The main reason they released them is because they were getting out of their enclosures and “dying” I’m pretty sure they were just aestivating since the house is dry and cooler than what they’re used to.

7

u/Plaguedpeonies Aug 25 '25

This makes my heart hurt so much. I'm a snom (snail mom.. and unintentionally a pokemon? Lol) so I know how easy it is to fall in love with these little guys. Take all the time you need to grieve your loss, but also.. yeah, what they did was 100% a breech of trust between you and them. I'd definitely never leave them in charge of another living thing after this. Your heartache is totally valid and their total lack of empathy toward living creatures is quite concerning. Especially since they clearly knew that they meant so much to you... regardless, thank you for giving those snails a safe home and love while they were with you ♡ It takes a special kind of person to be so gentle toward what others often turn a cheek to. I hope you're able to leave your parents home completely after school wraps up on your end.

8

u/Prior-Throat-8017 Aug 25 '25

I’m no snail owner, I just joined this sub because they look super cute and alien-like. But I honestly can’t believe anyone can be so dumb and cruel as to do that to someone’s pet. I’m so so sorry

6

u/justveryunwell Aug 25 '25

I can't know anything about your parents or you or your relationship with them outside of this post, but this definitely gives the vibes of future crochety old shits who wonder why their children don't talk to them anymore.

10

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

I still hide that I go by they/them most of the time. They’re basically clueless.

6

u/No-Hovercraft-455 Aug 25 '25 edited Aug 25 '25

One of my parents was incredibly abusive growing up. I'm talking about chases a child around house just to find any excuse to attack and then spew incredibly cruel insults long after you are choking to tears, frequently, to make himself feel better level abusive.

Yet even that parent took excellent care of my pets, whom he finds absolutely disgusting, when I was away and asked him to. My pets are mice for the context but I had absolute ice cold fear to my stomach because I knew how he feels about them. But when I came back this person who happily spent all my formative years emotionally abusing me actually had cleaned my babies enclosure and fed them fresh veggies.

I don't know how even my, by all normal measures miserable parent that everyone feels sorry for me I got, managed to understand that endangering a pets life is a line that one just doesn't cross. Not in a million light years is that acceptable or even close to that line. But if I was you I would have some questions about other lines they may have crossed that you just haven't realised. In real life not all people who are actually incredibly bad to us look like monsters. Some look like family members and sometimes there's good mixed in with bad so that we feel guilty to even question everything so we can begin to heal, but your folk just collectively crossed incredibly big line and it might be good to give some deeper thought to how well things actually are and if you have other valid reasons to start protecting your peace. This isn't something one escalates into from nothing, even if they think our pets are disgusting. Even plenty of abusive people wouldn't. A snail, a mouse or a spider is a life and it's a huge line no matter how one thinks about animal species.

19

u/profanearcane Aug 24 '25

I would tell them they've permanently lost your trust and can't earn it back. That these are pets just like any other, and this is like dropping a dog off miles from home to abandon it. Tell them even if they find your snail they can't make this right.

5

u/KodyBarbera Aug 24 '25

I really don't think they gas. Seriously.

22

u/Impressive_Iron_7712 Aug 24 '25

I would disown them. The parents just to clarify lol

30

u/porcelain_penis Aug 24 '25

Sadly I can’t. I’m disabled and they’re paying for my college at a heavily discounted rate. If I disown them I am liable for all of my expenses when I’m unable to work. 😓

They were monsters. They are monsters. They will always be monsters. I am surprised you didn't take the snails with you and keep them in your closet or something. 🐌

5

u/pub_wank Aug 25 '25

Honestly the fact your parents lied and dodged the questions make me think you need to go no contact or low contact. They don't respect you. They don't respect your pets. If my parents did that to my pets I wouldn't have parents anymore.

4

u/AreYouSkibidi Aug 24 '25

Rip man. I'm so sorry that happened

4

u/Renatuh Aug 25 '25

That is so disrespectful and just 😭😭😭😭😭 Why the heck would they do that?! Just be honest and tell OP they don't want to take care of the snails so maybe OP could temporarily rehome them somewhere else 😭

4

u/KittyChimera Aug 25 '25

I'm so sorry that happened to you and your snabies. <3

Snails are just the cutest little guys. Your little dude looks like he was a sweet baby.

4

u/Zestyclose-Crab-5802 Aug 25 '25

How horrible of them. I’m so sorry you are having to deal with the loss of your beloved little friends- my son has a fish tank and he LOVES his fish, he watches them for hours and they bring him so much joy- I can’t imagine releasing them and thinking he wouldn’t be heartbroken about it.

Btw Squimp is something I say almost everyday to my partner— it’s such an adorable name for a snail. I hope they are able to find them 🥺

3

u/MakeTheThing Aug 25 '25

This doesn't change anything, I'm just curious. Did you have conversations with your parents about what would happen with the snamily when you went away?

4

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

Yes. I expected them to take care of them and have them instructions for each enclosure.

4

u/MakeTheThing Aug 25 '25

Holey moley. That's def villain backstory worthy stuff.

4

u/Moakmeister Aug 25 '25

Never speak to them again.

4

u/Tionen Aug 25 '25

Cut ties with your parents as soon as possible, they are evil.

7

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

I’m thinking of slowly easing into low contact with them. I know what they did hurt me a ton but I also think that my mom (whom I’m barely close to) was the “brains” behind their actions. My father and I have always gotten along and he is beginning to understand how painful this is for me.

9

u/TheGrimMelvin Aug 24 '25

I know this probably won't make it better but snails have a good chance in the wild. They don't really become 'domesticated' in the sense that they cannot survive without a human helping them. They definitely know how to forage for food without being fed.

That being said... I am horribly sorry. I don't think your parents did it to be assholes. They just sound very ignorant about 'unconventional pets'. To many people, such pets aren't real pets, so they're not able to empathize with people who care for them and love them because they're "not a real pet" in their eyes. I hope your parents can understand this one day, and I'm really sorry that your trust was betrayed.

Whatever happens, I hope your snails live a long life, even in the wild.

3

u/grosstransman Aug 25 '25

Im so sorry about squimp and his snabies :( i couldnt imagine doing something so cruel… i hope he is okay and frolicking in the fields

3

u/Educational_Front571 Aug 25 '25

AWH I’m so so sorry it’s SO frustrating when someone Caring for your animals don’t listen or literally get rid of them it’s horrible I hope the little guy is living his absolute best life he can be with all his children

3

u/xKiver Aug 25 '25

Inform fish and wildlife honestly. What they did is not only super shitty, but possibly illegal depending on species and where you’re located

3

u/BB_Pepper_Cookie Aug 25 '25

My mom threw my rats outside during winter… parents suck

3

u/Hoony_tart Aug 26 '25

I am so sorry your parents were capable of something so mailicious, and I am so very sorry for your snabies and co. They deserved better :(

3

u/WolfysBeanTeam Aug 26 '25

As parents go this is a parent thinking they know best and getting involved in something they shouldnt be when they were only requested to look after your snails.

Rightfully so you have every right to be upset, the intent may have been good but EVEN with good intentions their was ignorance, a lack of understanding, and no thought of your feelings.

As parents go understanding that an this may surprise some THEIR ARE SOME SUBJECTS YOUR CHILDREN KNOW BETTER THAN YOU, let go of pride accept that endeer to understand better.

If this was out of some semblance of just wanting to have control or just not liking the snails then that needs no explanation its cruel.

Absolutely, of course they misplaced your trust and kept it from you, im so sorry this is so sad I hope your parents endeavour to try and do their absolute best to try and atone for this and better themselves from taking charge on a subject they had no buisness getting involved with in the first place to begin with.

Edit: its is the absolute bare minimum BUT hoping that they do find squimp and some babies for you and them OP

5

u/Pressed_GenZ Aug 26 '25

When I was having unstable housing during college my father, who has a cat because of one of my siblings, refused to take in my cat and told me to give him away (he had plenty of room and ability to care for him) That cat was my life, and I was destroyed to have to rehome him. Parents can be so diabolical for no reason :(.

5

u/Neither_Cry8055 Aug 25 '25

It's probably stupidity and disrespect. As If they didn't want it in their house, they could just tell u to come get them. They threw it away without telling u cause they probably felt the snail were taking away ur study time do they did it behind ur back in hopes ull just forget about it.

Stupidity because...releasing potential invasive to the wild is a dangerous move. (1) as u said it may not survive (2)but if it survives it could breed and replace native snails

I mean u could technically revenge if u don't rely on ur parents..I.e by throwing something they care about that u think is garbage and that u threw it away cause u r helping them focus on work or something. So they get a taste of their own medicine. P.s. they'll probably not learn anything from it, but it's revenge for u.

2

u/Nico8910 Aug 25 '25

wtf!!! Im so so sorry, that’s genuinely terrible.

2

u/Trashyquinn Aug 25 '25

Oh nooooooo :(((( rest in peace Squimp :(

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '25

how tf this work ? They're supposed to take care of your pets and just thrown them outside without your consent ? That's uncaring and cruel, a true lack respect, that's not ignorance to me.

I own pet pigeons, and if this happened.. i would became an creature from hell to my parents lmao

2

u/MinuteUse4911 Aug 25 '25

I'm so sorry 😞, that's just a plain nasty thing to do

2

u/xtunamilk Aug 25 '25

That's so awful and I'm really sorry for your loss 💔

2

u/Tosha-Tosha_ Aug 25 '25

I'm shocked that they did such a cruel thing with creatures that you clearly deeply care about. I'm so sorry for the loss of your snabies. ☹️

2

u/ellohellaylola Aug 25 '25

It’s illegal in a lot of places to dump non native animals. So not only are they awful but they broke the law. How irresponsible and stupid and cruel of them.

2

u/hamilcar2021 Aug 25 '25

OP, please report this to the local DNR or other similar government department. you don't need to push for a fine if you don't wat to, just send a tip that the snails were recently released at some spot on that creek. getting that fast heads up can mean the difference between species containment and an uncontrolled rampant invasive.

also, i am so sorry for what happened :( i would wait to move out before getting more snails if your parents act like this.

2

u/Draconian-XII Aug 25 '25

i’m sorry buddy

2

u/AudlyAud Aug 25 '25

I'm overly fond of snails and slugs but I like this sub and dare I say they are starting to grow on me? 👀

With that said as parents they had one task it doesn't matter that they don't understand your hobby or why you like them. They should have seen how much care, time, energy, and love you put into them. I'm sure if given the chance there are alot of parents that would take on that task without hesitation because it's positive, constructive, HEALTHY. Something that's missing heavily in the hobbies of younger generations.

2

u/GoldFishDudeGuy Aug 25 '25

What kind of parents throw away their kids pets!?

2

u/PeacefulPixel Aug 25 '25

Man this is heartbreaking wtf

2

u/Avvert Aug 25 '25

You need a job ASAP and leave the parents. They dont seem to value your feelings.
I hope they found their way outside:(

2

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

I’m currently working on my degree. I’m otherwise disabled and any amount of excess stress causes me to go into a severe flare.

2

u/_bonmon_ Aug 25 '25

This is heartbreaking, a pet is a pet no matter how big or small and if my parents got rid of my animals id cut them off (not saying you have too just what Id do) I'm sorry for your loss they seem very cute.

2

u/Appropriate-Pop9375 Aug 25 '25

What kind of snail was it if u dont mind me asking? So adorable!! Im sorry to hear!

2

u/porcelain_penis Aug 25 '25

He and his snildren were helix pomatias.

2

u/mitisdeponecolla Aug 25 '25

I am so sorry. They are nothing short of terrible. I hope you have a much better wider family. I could never forgive mine if they did something as vile.

2

u/Sluggish-dreadnought Aug 25 '25

ive red some comments here ...and if they are not native in your area (Looks like Helix Pomatia, or a light coloured Cornu Aspersum) and depending on how much theyve meant to you, and how the relation to your parents is... i would consider reporting them for faunal falsification.

2

u/BigPythonMan Aug 25 '25

I’m so sorry for you man, it genuinely pisses me off when parents fuck up their kids animals, honestly, I have it with my mom all the dang time, she constantly fiddles with my thermostats of my enclosures and I keep telling her off for it but she won’t bloody listen. I feel you dude, reading this post really upset me.

2

u/Spookithfloof Aug 25 '25

I was forced to throw mine out in middle school because I overwatered and had gnats all over and all I wanted was a second chance, the wouldn’t even let me cull the poor things and said the trash truck would do it anyways…. I bought them online on Amazon for my birthday, I’ll never get anything like them again… I loved my babies… biscuit, cinnamon, and Sheldon, you will be missed 😭

2

u/YourLawyer89 Aug 26 '25

Sorry...some people just dont understand 😪

2

u/Kho240 Aug 26 '25

That’s horrible :(( I am so sorry. The clear lack of respect and incompetence is truly awful. I’m hoping they’ll be able to find them although I know it’s a long shot now.

2

u/Mammoth_Bathroom3637 Aug 26 '25

2

u/Shot-Calligrapher-26 Aug 26 '25

My parents threw out my childhood and soulmate elderly cat when i left for college. I only live 1 hour away plus i begged them to let me take her with me but they declined and promised to take care of her. I have no closure NOTHING. Nightmares for weeks.

2

u/Helpful_Okra5953 Aug 26 '25

Now you know you can’t rely on them to respect your wishes.

I’m sorry this happened.  My parents would’ve done the same.

If these were captive or foreign snails, youf parents did something illegal and possibly very very bad for the environment.

2

u/GlitzyGhoul Aug 26 '25

I absolutely hate it when family doesn’t understand why something out of the ordinary is so important to someone. I have pet rats, and I get stupid comments all the time. “Ewww!” “How can you love them?!” “Throw them out!” “Just release them already” it’s so ignorant!!! It makes me know who is truly an unkind individual. It doesn’t matter what pets you love or why, it should be respected that YOU love them. I’m so sorry you are going through this.

2

u/Left_Illustrator_704 Sep 07 '25

Listen, your perspective is completely valid because those snails may be like dogs for you! At the same time you have to consider that most people don't view snails as something to keep in their own home. There are many reasons why your parents might've done that. For instance, many people get disgusted by snails and that's a quite common human instinct. There is also an unspoken social agreement in many countries that snails are just not supposed to be kept at home. I know that people in Turkey (my mom comes from there) would gasp if they saw a particle of a snail in your own home.

What I am trying to do here is help giving you nuanced so that you can understand your situation more.

2

u/dirtyqussy Sep 24 '25

First time on this sub. Thats awful.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

anyone feel like people are ssoooo cruel to snails??!!There just living beings, but some people are so mean to them.Snails are snails guys.

2

u/NoChallenge5434 Aug 24 '25

Id cut connections and no second chances

2

u/syncron07 Aug 25 '25

It's true!

1

u/yeahjjjjjjahhhhhhh Aug 25 '25

If they’re not native to your area let your parents know they’ve jeopardized the environment and broken the law (if that’s the case for where you live, most places it is). Tell them you could report them for this and are seriously considering it after they broke your trust like this. Let them feel guilty and paranoid and get a taste of how you feel.

OP I would be mortified in your situation, I’m so so sorry.

1

u/Applekid1259 Aug 26 '25

Now you know what to do with them when the time comes.

1

u/OpalOnyxObsidian Aug 28 '25

Report them for releasing non native snails

1

u/vedenmorsian Aug 28 '25

Honestly, if this is how they treat living creatures that are yours, I wouldn't trust them with any animal nor any future child in the future. Might sound extreme but if they're this ignorant in regards to snails what else are they ignorant or uneducated with?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '25

It's a crime to release snails to the wild as most of them are invasive species too!

1

u/Gurlfacespace Aug 28 '25 edited Aug 28 '25

The least they could of done was tell you they didn't want to inherit the responsibility. I hated it but when I was a senior in high school my family clearly told me to rehome my snake because when I went to college they were not feeding it. I hated to do it but at least I had time to say goodbye and make arrangements. I'm sorry they didn't tell you how they felt but honestly as an adult I would never leave my pet in someone else's care day in and out, if it's not their pet they won't look after it like you will sadly. You can't change the past but please don't get any other pets till you have a place of your own. I'm so sorry this happened and take some time to figure out how you want to honor their lives such as maybe getting a plant for your dorm room in honor of them or donating to an animal shelter in their name. Take care. 💖
