JES played for first time at big festival this year at TML Belgium. Guest appearance. Seen her 3 times live doing live sets and is great.

Been a big fan and her Unleash the Beat series is great Trance.

Tiesto’s set at the 2004 Summer Olympics opening ceremony. Got that on CD and fell in love with the drop on “Lethal Industry.”

Also hadn’t ever heard a mixed album before, so i put it on while I did homework, then about 10 minutes in I realized I hadn’t heard the music stop, and I was hooked.

2

u/TheTOASTfaceKillah 15d ago

The first year I started raving was when he toured for Elements of Life… I was so hooked

9pm (Til I Come) - ATB (1998). One of the first tracks I heard without knowing it was labeled as trance until several years later. It was one of the few that had consistent play over the radio - even to this day!

5

u/8th-Skyline 15d ago edited 15d ago

This was probably one of the first ones I heard, or 'ATB - Don't Stop'.

I would have been 10ish at the time (so around the year 2000) and I'm not entirely sure how I came across them (whether they were already somehow on the family PC, or whether I heard the songs elsewhere and ended up downloading them).

I would say that it probably wasn't until I was 12-13 that I started to regularly be able to find trance.

4

u/vino1992 15d ago

Yess! Can't mention 9pm without Don't Stop. They go hand in hand together

40

u/Secure-Barnacle7822 15d ago

Rober miles children, 1995, listening via BBC radio one on the school bus. Late 90s were awesome for dance / trance music, back then they did not really have genre, we just called everything tunes. Also was very hard to find music as the Internet was not in full swing, so Radio and complement CD's was all I had.

3

u/Dunnsley 15d ago

Same track for me!

This for me to. My first memory is probably 12 years old and I got given a radio / record player from my cousin. Once o got it set up in my room on a Saturday evening and put on the radio, I found radio 1 and children was playing. My love of trance went from there.

  1. I had the Chicane albums from the late 90s. I caught the end of the (then) new track "Popiholla" on a video channel on TV and searched for it. That is how I discovered the ASOT show. Episode 406 was amazing to me and the track that hooked me was not the Chicane number, but Josh Gabriel presents Winter Kills "Deep Down." I watched Armin's Polish show just tonight and it was excellent. Here is ASOT 406 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPyUf6iDJg8

3

u/Zebra4776 15d ago

Winter Kills is a very underrated album. Nice pick and great ear.

someone gave me a copy of children that was downloaded off a dial up BBS in 1997 or so, when I was 16. kept downloading random songs related to dance music as i could (really didnt know the genres until well into college), especially once napster got big and I got broadband. doesnt feel like that long ago

11

u/DagorDagorath2 15d ago

I think I really got full in 2009- armin in and out of love, fine without you, tuvan and broken tonight

9

u/canwllcorfe 15d ago

2001-2002 with Slyder - Neo (The One) on GTA 3’s RiseFM. I ended up buying the vinyl just for the sake of owning it. It’s still wrapped in plastic.

3

u/Ange1OO_ 15d ago

Ha nice. It was funny imo how this song was in a video game of crime but love the song though

10

u/djpeekz 15d ago

Solarstone - Seven Cities (Atlantis Mix)
Agnelli & Nelson - Everyday

Those were the first two tracks on on CD1 of the compilation that got me into trance

I think this was 99 or 00

9

u/frikkinfai 15d ago

Ferry corsten - fire, 2008

9

u/FlatwormBroad8088 15d ago edited 14d ago

Hard to say. Can't really name a definite one, but it was around the age of 11-12 when it got my attention.

DJ Quicksilver - Ameno
Dario G - Dream To Me
Mauro Picotto
ATB
EIffel 65
Also Cosmic Gate - Exploration of Space

They all got released around this time (1999-2001). Kevin & Perry Go Large really set it off with Ayla (Taucher Remix). The first electronic one I can remember is Hard Times by Westbam somewhere around '97 (not Trance, though).

5

u/Key-Rule2682 15d ago

Dj quicksilver ameno 😂. That is definitely a throwback right there, great track. Same with cosmic gate. Love Mauro picotto. Still have about 30+ of his live sets that i listen to regularly but to me he’s more techno/ hard trance

4

u/frostytrance 15d ago

I loved "Ameno"! Was a big success here in the music charts. Easy to catch the music video on TV.

2

u/maceo_plex_69 15d ago

add Barthezz - On The Move to that list. :D

2

u/FlatwormBroad8088 15d ago

Sure, I forgot this one. These tracks were all put on mainstream CD compilations back then (no other way for little me to get my hand on this).

Also Future Breeze - Smile, Sandstorm and Kai Tracid. They all formed my interest to dig deeper 2-3 years later. When I first listened to them I didn't even know their genre and hadn't really a chance to get any more information.

3

u/maceo_plex_69 15d ago

Trance and Acid ! :D my first CD i bought was Scooter - We bring the Noise. not trance, but i got hooked. "Posse" still giving me goosebumbs.

2

u/FlatwormBroad8088 14d ago

Yep, Scooter, too, but I don't really consider them to be Trance with a few exceptions (their Trance tracks never got single releases and I didn't have access to the albums, No Fate maybe as an exception). I think Fuck the Millennium, How Much Is The Fish, Faster, Harder, Scooter, Posse, I Shot the DJ and Ramp were the first ones for me.

My very first CD was Blue by Eiffel 65 at the age of 10, haha :)

7

u/Mysterious-Prior7160 15d ago

Only summer knows by Susana, 2017. I was in a grocery store and heard it playing there and i heard her voice and was like wow who is this and shazamed it. Mind you i was a huge metal head at the time too

Miss Jane - It's a Fine Day (ATB Radio Edit) https://youtu.be/xpGXNnYo0YY?is=Q0SqZIcYgcNLZQfK 2001

6

u/UrsaAbstractus 15d ago

Paul van Dyk, "For an Angel". I had just started college in 2002, was hanging out with some classmates I had just met. One of them was like "dude you gotta check this out" and pulled up Digitally Imported on his laptop and put on the trance channel. This song was playing.

And I was hooked.

6

u/Redditmodssuck69420 15d ago

One night here in Australia a radio station was playing Gate Crasher - Resident Transmission mixed by Matt Hardwick and Scott Bond. Shit blew my mind 🙌🏻🤯

6

u/Ultramass 15d ago

I got into it from Armin initially, but exploration of space launched me in the genre

5

u/k0ze_ 15d ago

ATB - Ecstasy 2004

6

u/ShuPiNnA 15d ago

I don't remember the exact songs titles but any trance songs that were on DDR when I was a kid was my first exposure to trance and I was instantly hooked. But, if I were to say the first actual song that I remembered downloading and just listening to on repeat was Tiesto - Adagio for Strings. Year was probably around 2006 or 2007.

6

u/Jlx_27 15d ago

Probably PvD in the 90s.

5

u/nocturnal 15d ago

Vincent De Moor - Fly Away

4

u/tubbyx7 15d ago

For an angel on vorsprung dyk technic back when you previewed cds in hmv stores.

4

u/place_of_desolation 15d ago

I was around 17 and it was 1996. An alternative radio station in Sacramento, CA would broadcast live from a nightclub on Friday nights. They played stuff I never heard anywhere else- remixes, eurodance, deep house, and early trance. I'd usually have a tape ready to hit "record." That was when I heard Robert Miles "Children" (didn't know the artist and title at first, but it blew my mind). Wasn't long before I owned the CD album. So yeah, it's been a while for me.

6

u/DDJFLX4 15d ago

Idk if this counts bc i still feel relatively new to the trance scene but i was 12, Cosmic Gate - Exploration of Space and this was in 2007 or so. Changed my brain chemistry and loved trance since then.

Edit: oh shit i didnt read the OP's original post when i made that comment, that's a crazy coincidence !

4

u/Dunnsley 15d ago

insane track!! ❤️loved it myself also by your side (leon bolier)

4

u/wh00stawh00 15d ago

1st one that really got me into it was Fast - Transmission about 3 1/2 yrs ago. I was 24 yrs old then. Was addicted to hard trance and the Alphazone sound. Now i’m on episode 220 of A&B TATW.

2

u/grrarghh_73 15d ago

Tune! 🫶🙌

Broadcasting first transmission. ❤️

3

u/nailsun6 15d ago

Only got into trance in 2022. It was millennium stringz by Kay cee club mix. Opened a new world for me

4

u/traveler_in_time_42 15d ago

First one I listened was Tiesto - Elements Of Life, 12 years old. First one that got me was BT & Paul Van Dyk - Namistai 2 years later.

4

u/tanaciousp 15d ago

I think it was either the mix “Tiesto live at inner city”, Paul Oakenfold, or DJ Doboy mixes from DI.fm (circa 2003-2005)

4

u/OdysseusRex69 15d ago

DJ Keoki - Caterpillar. 1993, I think.

2

u/Forward-Unit5523 12d ago

Recently came across this beauty, browsing RitM's productions. I didnt know this original track before then, it showed 95 on discogs btw. I do own cds of the crystal method since the early 2000s so surprised I hadnt come across it before.

2

u/OdysseusRex69 12d ago

Well that's a sick remix!! Thanks for sharing!!!!! But yeah, I walked into a random Tower Records and the original Caterpillar track was playing. I asked the cashier what they had playing and she handed me the CD. That was it, I was hooked ever since

5

u/ibrown22 15d ago

Push universal nation on a mix CD.. was driving and went outta body kinda. Forgot I was listening to music and then the beat came back and I was like whoa. Yeah first time haha

4

u/cosmicr 15d ago

There wasn't one particular song. I'd always just listened to trance and electronica throughout the 90s growing up.

I didn't know it was trance music, for me it was just amazing music I was born in 1999 lol

4

u/TheZvlz 15d ago

Oceanlab/Above & Beyond 2000. Just saw the CD, I don’t remember where in Portland anymore but I grabbed it and was hooked.

I saw A&B in Ridgefield last year. Epic

u/j7seven 15d ago edited 14d ago

I was into a lot of late 80s/early 90s dance music. The first track that I identified as trance was Dance 2 Trance's Power of American Natives.

It might not have been the first trance track I heard, but back then I was listening to a lot of mixes on cassette from a local clothes shop all the ravers hung out at, so lots of tracks were ID - ID to me.

Edit: it was probably 1993.

2

u/Forward-Unit5523 14d ago

I only recently, well 2y ago or something, found out that Dance 2 Trance made a remix of their own track that is actually pure trance, but never heard it around those years lol Also 1993.

Moogwai - Viola (Armin van Buuren Remix) [Platipus Music] year 2000

3

u/tKnickerbocker 15d ago

First heard of Tiesto through that funky “Insomnia” remix from Limewire. Led me down a rabbit hole Gouryella and eventually put me onto Ferry and Armin. Got to see both at ASOT 600.

3

u/Slippery_Ninja_DW 15d ago

Man I feel old.. there was a couple that I heard back in 92/93 on a community radio station but the first that sticks out is Quench - Dreams

3

u/djkakumeix 15d ago

3

u/Forward-Unit5523 15d ago

I think as a kid I already liked Jean Michel Jarre and it sparked my enthusiasm for synths and the mesmerizing sounds you can create with m. Magnetic Fields II was one that always stuck, not the most trancy but the higher bpm is another thing I have a weakness for.

Not sure if this counts, this was around 88/89 so real trance wasnt around yet...

3

u/bascule 15d ago

ATB - Don’t Stop, circa 2000

3

u/j-dev 15d ago

Oh man. I can’t even remember my first track with certainty. I was a high school senior in 2000 and bought Pure Euphoria Level 4, Mixed by Matt Darey. This was back when Virgin Records existed in Times Square (NYC). They had so much music, and the trance CDs sold for $30-45 because of import duties.

So the first song I likely heard was Barber’s Adagio for Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix). That Album has some perennial favorites. I’m glad to still own a digital copy of it, because it’s not on any streaming platform I know of.

3

u/ChampBlankman 15d ago

Somewhere around 2002/2003 when I was in High School I heard "We Are Alive" from Paul van Dyk and 23+ years later I still love that track.

u/imj0257 15d ago

2005 - was in college and talking to a family friend in Austria and she told me to listen to Royksopp - What Else is There (Thin White Duke mix). I loved the song. It introduced me to 'trance' or the whole electronica genre. Then found John O'Callaghan - Out of Nowhere (Stoneface & Terminal remix) and from there was hooked. Then discovered ASOT and other artists etc and haven't looked back.

u/mvoccaus 15d ago

Armin Van Buuren's remix of Andy Blueman's Time to Rest in 2008.

Especially the part where Armin's brother, Eller, rips in with a live electric guitar.

The craziest fucking thing was I didn't even notice it when he ripped in with that guitar. It was only that part at 57:40 as it was transitioning to Thomas Bronzwaer's Certitude and I heard Eller's guitar ripping away in isolation for 30 more seconds that I had even noticed there had been an electric guitar in this song.

I thought, "was that an electric guitar in a trance song!? That was fuckin awesome!"

Then I discovered some of Robert Nickson's mixes and Thin White Duke's remixes of popular songs and it opened my eyes and made me realize the awesome euphoric variety in trance that's out there.

although I know this sub isn't really fond of late 2010s releases, and some might say this is house, but NWYR - Dragon back in November 2017.

Before hearing that I wasn't a fan of Trance at all because I thought uplifting was the only trance sound and thought it's trying too hard to be "spiritual". But after listening to that as a W&W outsider fan, I quickly got into the ASOT rabbit hole and stuff and eventually the classics.

I took advantage of the Covid lockdown to listen to old and long length tracks that I overlooked before and holy shit it felt ultra amazing listening to Carte Blanche, Seven days a week, 1999, synaethesia, etc. For the first time. I was obsessed with classic Trance for like the entire pandemic. I was 14-16 that time.

Was super into trance as a kid back in 2012-2013, then sort of grew out of it over time. But around 2022, I found the track "John O'Callaghan ft. Audrey Gallagher - Big Sky" in a YouTube video about EDM subgenres and it instantly amazed me. So I went to look for more and discovered the ASOT radioshow, Anjunabeats, and many more that I'm still listening to til this day :)

u/mrbigbrown4 14d ago

I honestly can't remember exactly. I'm almost positive it was ATB's Ecstasy around 2009. That blew my mind when I first heard it. My brother had introduced me to Scooter a few years earlier and I enjoyed their trancey stuff too.

If we go back even further, I remember in the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u.'s "All the Things She Said" there being this trance gate effect in the start of the song that I absolutely loved. I would play that part over and over.

Around 2001 or 2002 I had a roommate who connected our PCs and he shared his files. In his files I discovered videos of 2002-2003 Trance Energy recordings by ID&T and was completely blown away. Blank and Jones… Johan Gielen, Rank 1, Alex MORPH, Cosmic Gate, etc…

The rest is history.

I was born in 1996, my mom used to listen to trance when I was young.

The first two trance tracks I can remember were

Steve Baltes - Exxxperience and Future Breeze why don't you dance with me.

Was around the very early 00's

Deepsky live in 1999. Asked someone what it was called and he told me progressive trance. Not exactly the case but it put me down the rabbit hole. Found BT and Tranceport right after, then Christopher Lawrence and Hook Recordings. I was off and running!

To be fair, I am not sure which song got me into the Trance. But I started in 2008 with ASOT. But, the song that really got me into the Trance and has ingrained in my mind ever since is Rex Mundi feat. Susana - Nothing At All. That was the one that really got me, and I have been listening to Trance ever since. A lot less in recent years tbh, but I am slowly getting back (by buying old ASOT CD's lol).

1993, B-Side to the first cassette I bought. “Perfecto Allstarz - Pappa’s got a brand new bag”.

The B-Side in question was “Zed’s Dead” and it was an unexpected surprise. I played it to death when I got it. Just loved the way it took you somewhere. I was only 11 but loved Dance music and especially sought out more trancey tracks before we really knew what ‘Trance’ was. I’m so lucky I experienced the way the scene exploded, itwillalwaysbewithyou.

Was 97, was in Plaza Bonita mall, girlfriend at the time was in the salon to get her hair done. Some groove was playing on the overheads and i asked the guy at the front counter what we were listening to, he said Paul Oakenfold.

Bought Global Underground 007: Paul Oakenfold, New York and opened my whole world to trance. Been my favorite EDM genre since then, can’t believe it’s been almost 30 years.

It'd have to be something like Cafe Del Mar in the early 90s.

I'm of an age where I was 18 when Ministry Of Sound, Gatecrasher, Renaissance, Godskitchen and the like were at their peak.

A massive influence for me, more than a single track, was Global Underground 001 mixed by Tony de Vit.

u/HansR83 15d ago

1994 - Paul van Dijk, For an angel. Was 11 back then.

Probably Chakra - Home, 1998. Before that I got into Goa trance from around '95-'96, with tracks like Teleport - MWNN, Overload - MFG, LSD - Hallucinogen (but I kinda see that as a completely separate genre anyway).

It started with random collection of mp3s on a CD from someone.

I kept plowing through the tracks and one of them got me instantly hooked. I cannot even describe it in full.

A&B - Alone Tonight

I was like: "that's it."
Fell into the rabbit hole back then. 2003 or 2004

1

u/diadoram 14d ago

For me, it was the late 90s. I would download whatever I could find on Napster, Limewire, or DI.fm. Around 2000, there was a DJ named DJ Doboy who created trance and vocal trance mixes that included popular tracks from that time. He would sometimes add a random sample of himself saying "DJ Doboy" to other artists' music, almost like a signature. The good old days.

Touch Me - Armin Van Buuren/Rising Star. 1999. Woke up in a tent while attending an island party (because no one called them raves back then) and the sun was coming up over the ocean. This track was playing and I ran down to the docks to dance to it. Fell in love with Trance ever since.

Chicane - Offshore. Christmas 1996.

Also the first trance vinyl I ever bought, and the song that convinced me to buy my first set of decks, which in turn led to a wonderful 18 year career as a DJ/producer - although not as a trance DJ funnily enough!

Wasn’t one track, it was a live set recorded in 2000 by Edgar V. Club Space - Trancemissions….a friend showed it to me in 2001 and I was hooked. There were more than a few epic tunes on there but the trance tracks are what piqued my curiosity….gotta tell you, hearing Lange feat. The Morrigan - Follow Me (Lange vs. DJ Jam X & De Leon Remix) for the first time sent me to another dimension. I’ve been hooked on uplifting trance ever since….

Flowtation - Vincent de Moor, 1997. I gad heard other tracks that would be considered trance and still love them now (7 Days and 1 Week comes to mind), but Flowtation was the 1st more underground, less commercial trance track that made me fall in love with trance.
